Sure, it may not be completely harmless. There could be some plot twists since the ruler of this New Moon, Mercury, is currently stuck in an uncomfortable malefic enclosure.

Venus and Jupiter come together at 25° in the Moon’s home sign Cancer but they’re overcome by Saturn in Aries. If there’s one thing that gets underestimated all the time in astrology, it’s the power of the superior whole sign square.

A Lost Story That Couldn’t Possibly Be More Perfect

I’m starting to think that I made it up but I could swear I read a Dutch short story once that perfectly describes the upcoming Venus/Jupiter/Saturn situation. I’ve searched everywhere but, alas, I couldn’t find it.

Here’s what I remember. It’s a story about a woman who sees people’s pain and feels compelled to do something to alleviate their suffering. She starts offering free hugs to everyone who approaches her. Gradually, however, people start taking advantage of her. They touch her inappropriately, hurt her, abuse her, and then even torture her. It’s horrendous. The story ends with her death. She absorbed other people’s darkness until it killed her.

The kindness of Venus and Jupiter overcome by Saturn.

The protagonist tragically fails in her noble mission because she believes kindness alone is enough. Like many Venusians and Jupiterians, she assumes that goodness naturally evokes goodness. Saturn points out she couldn’t be more wrong.

As the woman offers warm hugs and solace without limits or boundaries, she quietly keeps repeating the same message – that people can take anything they want from her at no cost. The peace she radiates does not evoke respect from others. On the contrary, she becomes a social vacuum into which everyone instinctively starts dumping their anger, fears, needs, frustrations, and resentments.

If you surrender your Saturnian boundaries, you’ll find that people will test how far that surrender extends. A well-intended service can quickly provoke expectations from others which then turn into entitlement. And entitlement typically devolves into abuse.

I think the protagonist resembles a Jupiterian saint who forgets that it is actually self-sacrifice that redeems the crowd… The superior square from Saturn is here to remind us that true love also depends on our ability to say “no.”

Algol

variable star (Beta Persei) in the constellation Perseus, late 14c., literally “the Demon,” from Arabic al-ghul “the demon” (see ghoul). It corresponds, in modern representations of the constellation, to the gorgon’s head Perseus holds, but probably it was so called because it visibly varies in brightness every three days, which sets it apart from other bright stars.

Known as the Demon Star, the Blinking Demon, the Gorgon’s Head, the Head of Medusa, Lilith, and one of the Piled Corpses, Algol has quite the reputation. In Taurus, a sign associated with the throat, Algol is the fixed star that severs the head from the body, literally and metaphorically.

I’m guessing more than a few somatic workers are aware of the essential role the throat/neck (the 5th Chakra) plays as a purification center - Taurus’ ruler Venus was traditionally known as the goddess of purification - and how vulnerable it is to what people used to call “demons” and now refer to as energetic interference or attack by negative influences.

I talk about the New Moon on Algol in my new video, but for my subscribers here, I thought I would share something more personal.

In my natal chart, Jupiter represents illness and death and happens to be located within only 23 minutes of Algol. I’ve had the honor of encountering Medusa’s gaze a couple of times.

Here are some examples that hopefully demonstrate (pun intended) how, oftentimes, the mythological symbolism of the stars is expressed in a very blatant way.

• As a kid I had what I now think of as undiagnosed allergic reactions where my throat would simply close and I would suffocate to the point where I was just about to pass out before Algol’s grip was released.

• I’ve always been a horror fan with a dark sense of humor, and I couldn’t make any art other than horror/gore drawings and paintings. Before I even knew about Algol, I intuitively painted a self-portrait where I held up my own chopped-off head.

• Whenever I went on city trips, the first thing I looked for on the map is where the cemetery was located and if there were any medieval museums with torture equipment on display. No, not because I’m a sadomasochist. Yes, it has to do with a “don’t press the red button” fascination but much more so with the remembering of the fact that there’s a very dark yet undeniably real aspect of humanity that most people do not want to look at. I can’t blame them. I sometimes get a little tired of it myself. Enough of that darkness has already been exposed.

Needless to say, not everyone understands my Algolesque hobbies and interests and I quickly - although not soon enough - learned that speaking openly about them is a big No-No. Too dark, too intense. Even Jupiter’s politics and philosophy makes both the Left and the Right feel uneasy. It’s Medusa’s gaze that petrifies people.

The word alcohol derives from Algol, and I confess, alcohol used to be my natal Jupiter’s trusty escape pod. Ignoring my better judgment, and hiding behind the great Marsilio Ficino who prescribed wine to temper Saturn’s rigidity, I still enjoy Algol’s spirit as occasional “medicine,” although, that too, is an avenue of pleasure I frequent less often than I used to… because severed from the head, the body does protest.

But even without Ficino’s remedy the Cosmos knows how to depict Medusa in a more playful way. Dreams, fiction and non-fiction appear to be the same in this realm.

Yesterday, for example, after posting my video on Algol, I watched an episode of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (yes, may I?) and as the law of synchronicity dictates, that’s when my work with the Gorgon started bleeding through in my everyday reality… In episode 6 of season 2, one character got very drunk and another character, Lilith (the old Hebrew name for Algol), discovered the severed head of her lover Adam, while sitting at the table with the greatest demon of all, the Dark Lord himself. I’m not even mentioning another character’s slit throat. Perfection.

As the tireless shape-shifter of the heavens, the Moon is always sculpting the Sun’s light, molding it into a fresh face each night. Isn’t this an obvious demonstration that the multitude of forms we see is simply spirit playing different roles?

Human beings all play their parts in the Great Theater of Life but often believe they need to commit to a single role, stubbornly insisting on a specific story:

This is who I must be and this is what I must do.

And then we cling onto it with self-inflicted determination, locking it in the oven until it’s hardened into a dry identity. This is the perfect recipe for an inexhaustible supply of dissatisfaction, as we struggle to breathe beneath the crust of a self-imposed brand.

Luna and Jupiter shake their heads because, isn’t our behavior odd, considering how we all change in the most obvious ways? Our bodies stretch upward and gather lines with time - evidence of a zillion fleeting emotions. Our minds learn and forget. Seasons ebb and flow like the rhythmic pulse of the ocean. You are an ever-shifting wave. But no wave comes boxed in, packaged and labeled. I suspect the soul isn’t particularly concerned with defining itself, nor with the pursuit of a pre-determined destiny.

Mercury, currently in his detriment and fall, has paused his clever categorizations and is freely absorbing floods of possibilities. Changing course shortly after the start of the new lunar month, Mercury as the psychopomp guides us, here in Pisces, through surrender, because the more fluid you remain, the more life you can contain.

Opposing the recent lunar eclipse point, Mars tends to his weapons. His trine aspect to Jupiter dissolves his usual strategy. Chasing mysterious sea creatures, Mars notices they keep changing shape whenever he tries to grasp them. As soon as we name a thing, explain it, define it, it has already moved on. It seems to me that the soul is playing the same game - always evading capture by becoming. The sextile that the Luminaries make to Uranus echoes the same song.

As an astrologer, I know people want to locate their singular, demarcated purpose, the one role they were born to play. But are the stars really interested in confining meaning to a fixed duty list?

If the caterpillar was able to hold onto its perceived role instead of surrendering to the Piscean cellular soup inside the chrysalis, it would never morph into the lightness of a butterfly.

Spilling his wine as his big belly laugh erupts, Jupiter in Cancer carries a whiff of ecstasy, enticing us to step outside of ourselves and forget who we are. In that sweet, ephemeral space, we’re enveloped by his warm wholeness - a healing experience. Maybe Jupiter’s (in)famous love of “escape” is not evasive at all. Perhaps it’s simply the desire to loosen the corset of expectation and just breathe Life itself.

Can we please remain wonderfully, dangerously, gloriously unfinished, and lose ourselves in Life?

Ruled by Saturn and flanked by Mars and Pluto, today’s lunation projects a story about control onto the wall of fate. While the mutual reception between Mars and Saturn greases the wheels of competence and efficiency, we need to keep in mind that this is no ordinary New Moon. It’s a Solar Eclipse that confronts us with a shadow side, literally and metaphorically.

The greatest catalysts are eclipses, and they strikingly reveal something unsettling: it’s not disorder but alignment that produces interruption. When the Moon meets the Sun at the crossing of their paths, light is devoured and day becomes night. Rhythmically woven into the fabric of reality itself, this geometry, signaling a sudden turnaround, is not a mistake.

In the Sun’s exaltation, Aries, Saturn is fallen, while in Saturn’s domicile Aquarius, the Sun finds his detriment. They undermine one another by design. Now throw in Saturn’s conjunction to Neptune and the eclipse on top of that, and you’ve won yourself front row tickets to a spectacular unmasking of false authority and stolen power. When the Sun’s heart is obscured, we catch a glimpse of the machinery behind the curtain.

On an inner level, this eclipse may confront us with our private micro-tyrannies. While it’s only natural to want to be in charge of the script of your own life, the very intention to secure stability and permanence can make you more vulnerable. The tighter you cling to your overworked scenario, the more violently it can be torn from your hands.

Prominent Mars/Saturn signatures often produce strong controllers who feel relentlessly driven. They try to straighten the curve of the world and nothing can stop them. Mountains move, storms are tamed, and circles squared.

But sometimes, beneath all the pep and push lurks a little monster called hypervigilance.

The key is to find out where your discipline comes from. If ambition arises from play, from your inner creative pleasure, you’re breathing life. But if your itinerary is mapped out by fear, control masks a complicated compensatory structure, where instead of taking action, you’re bracing and pre-empting. Instead of pursuing a dream, you’re layering contingencies in an attempt to anticipate everything, optimize everything, and prevent everything.

Isn’t this at least part of the reason why so many of us are exhausted?

Innocently, control starts by managing certain situations that need your attention, and by adjusting your behavior. Wonderful, that’s a great way of navigating ups and downs. But when you over-identify with self-discipline and accomplishment, you’re trying to master uncertainty and that, paradoxically, raises the stakes of every fluctuation. Change, which is the condition, the very nature of the game of life, now feels like an existential threat.

The truth is that, in this realm, you cannot shape yourself into something untouchable.

If you define yourself as the sovereign architect of your life, as the “manifestor,” any event that contradicts that narrative will accumulate pressure, and sooner or later that carefully crafted identity will collapse under the weight of your imagined total responsibility. What a tremendous psychic load!

We’re all inhabiting a field of forces and, yes, our willpower is one of them. It’s a significant force, but it’s not the only one. That’s the message of the Aries/Aquarius dynamic.

Failure is not a betrayal, or a punishment from the gods. Reality is a play of polarities, and if our rejection of change makes us double down on control, our own rigidity will only exacerbate friction, rendering the inevitable reversal more dramatic, because the higher you’re building your tower of certainty, the more catastrophic the fall will be.

With Saturn in Aries until April 2028, the challenge is to shift our focus from control to examining and refining our relationship with defeat. Not in the negative sense but as a sweet release. In the heat of crisis, we discover that failure is nothing more than accumulated strain that, having reached its limit, is finally resolving.

A burden too great to carry will fall from our shoulders, thanks to Neptune’s mysterious vanishing powers, and thanks to ruler Mars’s youthfulness and courageous ability to keep moving forward without nostalgia. No desperate gluing of cracked structures, but brutal demolition so that something stronger and more honest can be built.

And yet, springs emerge where Saturn’s cold Earth can no longer hold everything inside. This New Moon is such a spring. No matter how much we try to contain our instincts and emotions, eventually they find their way out, just like water cutting through the rocks.

Those rocks usually appear as emotional stoicism and over-responsibility, shaping an identity built on the ability to endure challenges. Saturn’s conjunction with Neptune tends to romanticize our determination and hardness, but sometimes what we perceive as strength is a disguise for numb persistence.

The Moon and her exaltation ruler Mars, only two degrees apart, have some questions for you. They’re asking you what you’re afraid of. Would everything collapse if you stopped holding it all together? You’re surviving, yes, but are you living?

Maverick Uranus, scrutinizing the Capricorn stellium from a trine aspect, refuses to let you keep carrying the burden of obligation. He despises whatever feels stagnating in your life, and that includes the tried and true strategies you’re holding on to.

This lunation cycle is a reckoning that can help you dismantle your illusions one by one.

Mars and Mercury, in a tight connection with Uranus, are calling you out. Stop seeing your emotional repression as “self-discipline.” Stop wasting your precious energy on maintaining a dead end. Enough is enough.

Luna nourishes and Saturn devours. This means that the faster you absorb pressure, the quicker you are consumed by it. The core of the exchange between these gods as contrary principles reveals that (Saturnian) usefulness is a toxic currency that spends the (Lunar) body first. When you allow your value to be measured by how well you function, you’re always going to try to be of service and try to be useful.

But what you’re actually doing is training those around you to depend on you whenever they need something.

Slowly, subtly, your environment will start to reorganize itself around your helpfulness, until your volunteer work turns into a contract. You’re teaching others that you don’t need limits because you can keep going no matter what. Your own needs become invisible under a self-embroidered blanket of productivity. And by the time the exhaustion inevitably stiffens the body, your burnout will be interpreted as failure, not only by others, but also by yourself because you’ve tricked yourself into believing the same lie.

That’s the harsh lesson of the Capricorn Moon. Saturn shows her that nurture is not virtuous when pushed to the extreme. On the contrary, what you’ve been lifting for too long is finally remembering gravity. The Moon’s co-presence with Mars, the sextile to Saturn/Neptune, and the trine to Uranus are all ready to take the strain off your bones before it breaks you.

They want to set you free. Let them. Only then you’ll be able to convert Capricorn’s formidable raw materials into the expression of your most beautiful gifts.

Venus, always dancing with desire, slips in a few secretive moves on her way to an antiscion with Mars, currently exalted in Capricorn. It’s as if her gaze catches the embodiment of her own fiery passion reflected back at her. It’s an image that cuts. Through the mirror, Mars hands her the knife that presses our cravings deeper into the soul, in unfathomable ways.

Ruled by an exalted Jupiter, Venus in Sagittarius is the impossible love, and it’s precisely the impossibility that keeps everything alive and thriving. She cultivates affections that must remain imaginal to retain their potency, because once dragged into daylight, into the familiar world of calendars, contracts, and expectations, they inevitably wither.

Saturn’s messages from the marrow of his chilly bones find their way to Venus through a square. He doesn’t tolerate the incarnation of desire, and certainly not the aimless sort! “There must be goals, plans, logistics, systems, young lady!” And yet, while feigning to protest Venusian inclinations, Saturn recognizes the endless depth of his own melancholy. After all, doesn’t his eternal pensive sadness reveal an abysmal yearning? An unwavering devotion to what time can never deliver?

In Neptune’s presence, Saturn is no longer in the mood to kill ideals with rosters and deadlines. Ancient as he is, he understands something crucial: Venus’s desire is not meant to be fulfilled. Because fulfillment is death. The reason why Venus keeps pouring her longing into us instead of results is propulsion. It’s to keep us moving, reaching, and in the process, creating. It was never about possession. How else would we be able to enjoy Venus’s gift of joyous creation? Without her, nothing would ever come into being.

Maybe this lunation asks for a different kind of aim. The kind that celebrates the endurance of a creative tension. Holding tension implies a willingness to not conclude. Sagittarian faith, on the threshold of the Solstice as the Sun prepares his ascent, is about staying with the ache without converting it into dogma or destiny. There’s no summit to conquer here. There’s only the longing that keeps us walking through a living, breathing incompleteness.

In their Sagittarian union, and in a square to Neptune, the Lights enjoy a wide and misty horizon. Meaning resides in the absence of clarity. This new cycle is asking what it is, deep within us, that is willing to burn without any promise of arrival.

Let the arrow tremble mid-air in your field of longing.

Suspicious of Mars’s murky well, Luna and Aphrodite feel a little uneasy, a faint nausea stirring their instincts. Meanwhile, in what looks like a nymph-induced trance, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune swim backstroke in tight choreography.

Rarely initiating, but always responding, Water is a receptive element that takes on an endless variety of shapes and moods. When too turbulent, Water absorbs too much. When too still, Water only shows reflections. In both cases, Water ceases to be itself. These are the fatal extremes of the vast spectrum of this element.

As this month’s cycle unfurls the Scorpio angle of the grand Water trine, I feel the ancient Greek myth of Echo best captures the atmosphere of the fallen New Moon.

Echo was a naiad, or nymph, the very Spirit of living freshwater. Her mesmerizing voice was the song of a stream tumbling down the rocks. The unrestrainable cascade of running water always talks and so did Echo while Zeus was busy losing himself in the swollen bosoms of tantalizing nymphs, confident that Echo’s flowing song veiled his erotic escapades.

Until he was caught by his wife, Hera.

But she didn’t punish her husband. She cursed Echo by taking away her ability to speak her own voice. Instead, Echo was limited to finishing sentences started by others. Her spring was turned into the silence of fixed Scorpio, the sign where both feminine archetypes, the Moon and Venus, are debilitated.

The stagnant Water became a mirror, holding nothing but the lifeless reflection of every sound that brushed against Echo’s world.

The dark mask of the fallen Scorpio Moon is worn by Hera who blames Echo for being the voice that fractures the order she’s guarding so passionately. Zeus, the architect of law and meaning, is that order. Notice how in each myth, Zeus is restless, forever bursting beyond bounds, but someone else is always the conduit. By controlling the channel and mending the breach, Hera returns the world to its measured order.

Silencing Echo, driving Leto into exile, destroying Semele, turning Callisto into a bear… These are Hera’s attempts to preserve her husband’s form, in other words, her Jupiterian ideology.

At the heart lies the infamous power struggle of planets in Scorpio. Power protects itself by sacrificing the medium of its own transgression. In the Zeus and Hera stories, this dynamic is depicted as “marital drama,” but beneath that soap-opera varnish simmers an uncomfortable message. The system will always punish the weak point instead of the source.

The scorpion survives by sacrificing the limb that carried its poison. Power survives the same way, by discarding the instrument of its own wrongdoing. The vile rot lives at the top but the fallout lands on those that are lower down. This is a law as old in the polis as it is in our inner world. This New Moon asks for a deep descent into the darkness that has power over us. If we don’t pierce the surface, we’re trapped, just like Narcissus who met Echo after she’d been cursed. Then we’re doomed to keep staring at our own reflection, while the unseen currents below decide our fate.

Will we let Mercury, at the heart of the Scorpio Sun, fueled by the liberating force of Uranus, use his insatiable curiosity as a scalpel?

Mercury distorts while Saturn obfuscates. At least, that’s the impression we get from the perspective of our human experience. Ultimately, Mercury’s riddle and Saturn’s taboo are two dialects of the same mystery, the two ways in which truths are escaping our understanding. Yet it is in this apparent “concealment” itself that, paradoxically, something sacred is directly revealed to us.

Saturn as the Dwelling Place of Mercury

Mercury’s correspondence with the liquid, silvery heavy metal quicksilver speaks the language of infinite reflection, illusion, relativity, changeability, and movement.

Contrastingly, Saturn’s dense lead is the vessel that contains the quicksilver, restraining its volatility so that it can endure.

Without Saturn’s dullness, Mercury’s reflections remain pure fantasy, but Saturn needs Mercury’s rapid movement, or else stillness becomes too rigid.

Poison and its Initiatory Nature

Unlike the other planetary metals, both lead and quicksilver are highly toxic. Mercury crosses the blood–brain barrier and disrupts the nervous system, essentially unmooring the soul from the body that anchors it.

Saturn’s lead is more insidious. It seeps into the bones where it replaces calcium, dulling vitality, causing infertility and dimming the mind.

The fact that, in myths, poison often marks the threshold between mortal and divine knowledge, is no coincidence. Think of the shaman’s venom. To take poison willingly – or, in other words, to become a vessel for Mercury or Saturn - is to be initiated into divine madness. In the Platonic sense, “madness” is a form of possession by the gods, the state in which human consciousness is overwhelmed by a force it cannot contain.

Mercury’s poison is one that offers multiplicity: a delirium of symbols, a carnival of meanings. It keeps breaking the ego’s fixation on any single truth so that, eventually, the ego itself dissolves.

Saturn offers the poison of finality, confronting us with bitter decay, the inevitable end of everything; thereby breaking the ego’s fantasy of eternal evolution.

Like Mercury, Saturn kills the illusion of control.

Earth and Air

They both govern Earth and Air signs, which already reveals the nature of their friendship because while there are trine aspects between Virgo and Capricorn, as well as between Gemini and Aquarius, there are also aversions between Virgo and Aquarius on the one hand and Gemini and Capricorn on the other. Does the combination of these Earth/Air trines and aversions show how form and logic secretly bridge apparent schisms?

Wherever there are limits, there will be transgressions. Mercury and Saturn are the red buttons we’re not supposed to press. They guard the gate with different methods.

Hiding deeper truths behind silence and sorrow, Saturn’s firm stone gate forbids entry unless necessity, ordeal, or self-discipline opens it. Only then can we participate in Saturn’s hard-won wisdom.

For the Trickster, a gate is but a porous, ambiguous, shimmering membrane through which a multitude of meanings leak. Secrets are protected through trickery and a mixture of truth and deception, so that, when you pass the gate, you risk losing your mind, speaking in riddles upon your return.

When Mercury and Saturn meet as friends, the world gains grammar, a pattern of concealment through which the unspeakable begins to speak, but only if we’re willing to take a sip of poison.

Gliding on the weightless wings of hope, Lady Fortuna fills Libra’s scales with piles of plenty. If it were up to Jupiter, sheer faith and conviction alone could make the world more benevolent, beautiful, and Good with a capital G. While at the right time, at the right place, it can be helpful and reassuring to hear that everything will be okay, this new lunation cycle is asking how you relate to “faith in fate.” If you trust the Cosmos, does that trust work like a magical charm? Or does it feel like you’re building a collaboration with the universe?

We’re about to glimpse a more ironic side of Jupiterian faith because the god of optimism is gradually slowing down, preparing to station retrograde on November 11. This event is far from earth shattering, but adds up to the thorny hug he’ll receive from Mars and Saturn. In technical terms, from October 24-28, Jupiter will find himself entrapped in a malefic enclosure, flanked by Mars and Saturn’s rays. At the very least, this will ruffle Jupiter’s toga.

On top of that, Jupiter’s guest Mercury, our quicksilver of skill and reason, loses his playful quickness to turn retrograde at 6°51’ Sagittarius on November 9.

This traffic jam, my friends, is when our good old Jupiterian faith begins to wobble on its exalted stilts.

Is your faith – whatever you believe in - truly substance, or is it merely avoidance wearing the halo of wisdom? Jupiter’s square to the Lights in Libra is telling. “Everything will work out” is sometimes a socially acceptable way to say, “please don’t make me think about consequences.” It cleverly muzzles the familiar Libran anxiety that comes with the exhausting impulse to weigh every possible outcome. The fear of choosing wrongly can unconsciously construct a theology of inevitability: don’t worry, fate will sort it out. And once you start believing that, you conveniently no longer have to decide, act, or risk being wrong. Which feels great. Until the Cosmos calls you out.

I found an old Sufi story that perfectly illustrates this dynamic:
There was a dervish who prayed each morning, “God will provide.” One day he left his donkey untied, and by noon it had wandered into the desert. The dervish cried, “Why, Lord, didn’t You guard my beast?” To which a voice replied, “I gave you rope. I gave you hands. Why do you pray for what you refuse to do?”

At the very last bound of Libra, the New Moon reminds us that our ride isn’t free. The body-building god of self-service, Mars, rules that last bound, tethering us – the humble donkeys - to the post of effort with a rope woven from sweat and decisiveness.

Aren’t our modern clichés of positive thinking, manifesting, and trusting the process oftentimes a polite way of saying, “I’m outsourcing my Mars and Saturn?” We cannot treat Venus and Jupiter like a customer-service desk, where, if we submit the correct mindset the universe will ship our desires overnight.

“Believe and you shall receive” became “visualize wealth and you shall manifest it.” That’s not to say there’s nothing magical about visualization and imagination - on the contrary - but sometimes it mutates into a religion of acquisition that cannot bear any form or even hint of misfortune or decay. As if tragedy is just a “404 faith not found” error in the great manifestation portal.

When Jupiter reverses before perfecting his trine with Saturn, the heavens may stage a little comedy at our expense. The gods remind us this month that true faith is not simply passive trust, but participation.

So, don’t turn the gods into your servants.
Don’t let your faith replace your labor.
Tie your donkey. Use your rope.
Then, with clean hands, cultivate the garden of the gods’ gifts.

But beside that pragmatic layer lies a thinner, ethereal domain where appearances lose their common meaning and instead seem to murmur “mystifying riddles.” Here, the objects around us are no longer accessories or tools on the world stage. Things become signs. As an astrologer I come to this border again and again. It’s the realm of the Trickster, a half-lit theater where the stage props and performances refuse categorization. The events that occur in this twilight sphere feel charged with meaning and yet they remain entirely inexplicable. Is it serious or mere play? Is it objectively true or is it my imagination?

The more we pry, experiment, and investigate, the deeper the mystery becomes. The Trickster’s world appears to be specifically structured to evade total capture. When you wake up, you try to hang on to a vivid dream but before you can grab a pen it slips out of your memory. You attempt to take a picture of a UFO but no matter how state-of-the-art your camera is, it’ll come out blurry. You’re experiencing the most bizarre synchronicity but there’s no way you can prove it’s not a random coincidence. It’s not that these liminal phenomena are simply failures of technology or observation. We’re dealing with an obvious ambivalence that appears to be essential to their existence.

From the “normal” viewpoint, it looks like there’s something deceptive about the fuzziness of extrasensory perception, strange phenomena, the dream-logic that occasionally seeps into our wakeful state, and the time oddities that puzzle us. Each time we get to touch something that feels more genuine than our surface level experience, we’re led deeper into the paradox that intertwines truth and deception, reality and illusion.

This kind of ambivalence is generally associated with Mercury’s double nature. Taking us on journeys from here to the enigmatic Otherworld and back, Mercury functions as the quintessential Messenger. Always close to Spirit – the Sun – Mercury is the planet most frequently disappearing under the beams of the Sun, staying longer at the heart of the Sun than any other planet before returning to visibility on the other side of the Sun. In other words, Mercury has VIP access to solar insights, or God’s realm, and returns to us to tell us all about it.

Is the Trickster Deceptive?

Is Mercury deceiving us? The fact that we’re not able to grasp the truth of something doesn’t make it false. The word deception carries moral weight and implies intent because it’s a conscious trick or a lie told by someone with agency. With deception, there’s always the assumption of a hidden, stable truth beneath the false appearance. If you pierce the disguise, you’ll find the “real” thing. It presupposes that reality is ultimately knowable, just temporarily obscured.

But the Trickster’s realm isn’t necessarily lying to us. Mercury allows us to discover reality in such a way that our standard categories disintegrate. It’s not false, but it feels like deception. On top of that, trickery may not be concealing a discoverable truth at all.

While deception is like a false map covering the true terrain, trickery reveals an ever-shifting terrain where no final map is possible.

In that sense, Mercury isn’t deceiving us. Instead, he’s trying to show us that reality itself is dynamic, refracted, and inherently ambivalent. The phenomena are true - the UFO was really seen, the coincidence really happened – but because they’re Mercurial happenings, their form slides between registers, demonstrating that reality has a shimmering edge that cannot be captured by fixed categories.

What If?

And maybe we can even take it one step further and think of reality itself having that distinct quality. What if that’s the message Hermes is delivering? What if what we perceive as in-betweenness is just as fundamental as anything else? Maybe Mercury’s twilight games are not marginal curiosities but signs of the deeper law. In that case, the so-called “paranormal” isn’t a thin, elusive fringe at all, but the greater bulk of reality, like the vast submerged body of the iceberg, while the pragmatic layer most people cling to is merely the glittering tip.

Reality’s substance itself is as much about what escapes our attempts to define it as what fits neatly within it. Instead of dismissing life’s intrinsic ambiguity, Mercury asks us to let all certainty dissolve and recognize how the resulting discomfort can turn into a wondrous liberation once you accept the slippery foundation of reality itself. Given that Mercury has his joy in the first house of the birth horoscope, learning how to bend the rules of the game could turn out to be something human beings are pretty good at themselves.

Once you start seeing the world in signs and symbols, everything you experience exposes more wondrous layers of meaning. We’re treading into Jupiter’s domain here. The strong desire to share what you’re passionate about is a typical expression of Jupiter’s generosity. Always looking to expand your philosophical framework, the Jupiter in your birth chart wants you to spread your enthusiasm and have others take part in your quest for knowledge and wisdom. Some will be interested, but others? Not so much.

Since Jupiter rules the double-bodied (or mutable) signs of Sagittarius and Pisces in traditional astrology, the Greater Benefic shows his double nature in this particular context through the polarity between the archetypes of the seeker and the non-seeker. Both dwell within us with one of them dominating. In contrast to the restless side of Jupiter urging you to keep searching for the missing pieces, there are probably other areas in your life that are blessed with Jupiter’s peaceful contentment. In both cases, for the essential seeker as well as the non-seeker within you, the world arises as a meaningful realm in which everything should or does make sense.

The latter, non-seeking part is often a wholesomeness that you may find in friendship, community, leisure, work, or family. Jupiter’s exaltation in the Moon’s sign of Cancer points to the hope of finding a place where we belong, a safe haven where we feel at home in the everyday rhythms of existence. Here, the mystery of life is not a riddle waiting to be solved. Meaning is simply located in “what is,” in the most straightforward way. It’s the unspecified backdrop against which one builds, laughs, eats, loves, and dies.

While the archetype of the non-seeker feels grounded in the here and now, the seeker on the other hand is always tempted to pursue The Elusive Beyond. In the seeker’s eye, it can look like non-seekers have hardened into a numbness, as if they’re only experiencing a half-lived life because they ignore or ridicule the unseen dimensions of reality. Alternatively, seekers may actually envy the calm stability and natural flow others seem to thrive on.

Even when life is pleasant or comfortable for a seeker, or for the seeking part within you whispering in the back of your mind, there’s always a sense of incompleteness, a lack, or an inner knowing that something essential has been left out. This is the restless orientation of Jupiter.

Never quite satisfied with the world as it presents itself, seekers are restless interpreters of existence, habitually scanning for patterns and hidden correspondences. Jupiter loves systems. When he finds the interconnected structure of a complex matter, or when the chaos suddenly appears as order, Jupiter proceeds to affirm this newfound set of principles by expanding it to fit everything else in.

The seeker is instinctively drawn to framework-thinking and story-telling - not merely for curiosity’s sake, which would be Mercury’s signature - but because behind the veil of appearances lies a deeper order that functions as a sacred script.

Think of where Jupiter is in your birth chart, but also take into account any planets located in his zodiac signs. Whether it’s Sagittarius, with its figure half human and half animal, or Pisces, with its two fish swimming in opposite directions, the planets placed there reveal how you live out Jupiter’s double nature. Which of the topics that these planets represent are likely to nurture the non-seeking part of Jupiter where everything falls into place, anchoring you into the certainty of order? And which planets tend keep you captivated in Jupiter’s relentless seeking mode?

The seeking and non-seeking principles in your chart live in a perpetual but compelling and dynamic tension that often plays out in very obvious ways, just like seekers and non-seekers would interact in real life. The seeker may look at the non-seeker as a sleepwalker, someone anesthetized by comfort. The non-seeker looks back and sees a fantasist, lost in their own head. Both judgments contain truth. Drifting into endless searching, the seeker may never embody what they’ve glimpsed in a few mystical moments. Contrastingly, the non-seeker risks becoming so embodied in habit that they never glimpse anything mysterious at all.

It's not that one orientation is better than the other. They’re the double expression of Jupiter mirroring two ways of handling the strangeness of existence; one by plunging deeper into it, the other by having faith in the given world. Both approaches are spiritual and the challenge is to find peace within this Jupiterian polarity. That way, you’ll notice that you can still share what matters most to you by letting your truth radiate without feeling forced to prove your vision. In the center of Jupiterian generosity, the mystery and the given world cease to oppose each other. Instead, they become two ways of blessing, two ways of saying yes to being alive.

If she finds a messy room in the house of your being, Luna’s reflex is to step in, tidy, and make order. Fixing even the things that don’t need fixing, she relies on a wide range of Mercurial skills and crafts. Plans are organized, remedies are sought after, because in the Earthy realm of the Maiden, it’s the wound that awakens the healer. From a place of agency, the Virgo patch within us can catalyze a healthy sense of responsibility, but when anxiety fuels our actions, our path may take us to the darker end of Virgo’s savior complex. Rooted in a kind of mistrust – “If I don’t take care of this, no one will” – there’s a lack of intuitive faith in the Cosmos.

In contrast to Virgo, the flow of the vast Piscean currents will carry you to wherever you need to be, fluently, effortlessly. Nothing needs fixing because nothing is truly broken. Here, the deepest belief is that it’s impossible to redeem yourself. Instead, you must allow yourself to be saved by something greater. While surrender can save us from a lot of pain and burden, it can also become a trap of passivity that lets us drown in suffering or helplessness while we wait endlessly for rescue.

The union of the Sun and Moon opposed by their arch enemy Saturn brutally lays bare this Virgo/Pisces tension that lives in our world and psyche. When tilted toward Virgo, you might take on too much responsibility, exhausting yourself in a futile attempt to stitch up the world. When tilted toward Pisces, you risk giving up your agency, expecting others, fate, or God to rescue you. We’re here to tap into both sides and serve within the whole, using our hands to mend the world while at the same time being carried by something larger.

Under the faultfinding gaze of Saturn, anchored at 28° Pisces, Luna sharpens her spindle to the point where it threatens to cut her fingers as Saturn’s stern voice denies, delays, and withholds. He says, “Not yet. Not this way.” Always the examiner, the relentless critic, Saturn is the one who stands between us and the glory of easy Piscean completion. Whether Saturn’s commentary inspires you to buckle down or capitulate, his criticism may strike you as unjust, and maybe even cruel or destructive. While his harsh “no” can certainly feel brutal, keep in mind that it’s not a random demonstration of severity. Make it your training ground where resilience is born.

Despite all the sacrifices and devotion to detail, what has been worked on and worried over so diligently now ushers in a reckoning. Saturn invites us to recognize that the same dedication and attention to detail that foster true mastery can, if unchecked, evolve into harsh self-criticism and excessive judgment.

Reminding us that the thread of our best efforts - however flawless - may always be seized by larger hands and ripped apart, this eclipse may be the obstacle that interrupts you, halts you in your tracks or, on the contrary, hurls you into a different direction altogether. If you have worked all summer on some careful creation, Saturn’s grip may tighten the knot to refresh your memory: fate’s loom does not belong to you alone. Whatever dies here clears space for what must be woven next.

Venus, witnessing the divine union of the Luminaries in Virgo, is swapping houses with Mercury, the host of the solar eclipse. In Libra, he’s the scribe of the scales, asking you to hear every side and carefully weigh each option, so that you can strike a balance between honest critique and compassion.

Imminent sign changes give additional testimony to a swift change of direction. Tomorrow, Sol ventures into Libra, and Mars returns to his Scorpio home. Such abrupt makeovers demand our flexibility because our greatest artistry always emerges in the ability to meet the moment and rise to the occasion so that we can grow beyond our boundaries.

Life will always deliver shocks without our consent, whether it’s through Saturn’s harsh “no,” or the veiling of the Light itself. Yet, within these disruptions or swift developments, we can discover our strength and resourcefulness, if we trust that while things unravel, we’re also being encouraged to live our story more boldly, to not only weather the storm but also harness its power and direct it toward an unwritten, more beautiful future.

We’re thrown into a shadow-world. Entombed in flesh and our bellies brimming with Lethe’s water of oblivion, all of us are “eclipsed” as we’ve been cut off from eternal radiance.

In the blink of a lifetime we might believe that darkness is all there is, but when the Dragon finally releases its grip, the soul’s memory returns with the light, and we bathe in the joy of rediscovery.

The World is a Stage

Gently rowing her little boat through Piscean scenery, Luna has been carefully rehearsing her lead role in the Great Game. If you’ve been listening carefully, you’ve already picked up some of her lines from a distance.

If there’s one stage set that evokes the truth of Oneness, it’s Jupiter’s vast and boundless ocean. Embracing the individual soul as a wave in the divine sea, Jupiter, our benevolent stage manager who is currently exalted in Cancer, has compassion with the audience. From an affectionate trine aspect, he supports Luna’s performance, lifebuoy in hand.

For Magnanimous Jupiter every imposed boundary is experienced as a misplaced prop on the stage getting in the actor’s way. Forms should be flexible enough to allow expansion, to absorb the Many streaming from the One, ultimately returning them to unity.

While a typical Full Silver Moon signals a fulfillment or realization, the veil that shrouds her Light this time has an invitation written on it: there’s more uncharted territory waiting to be combed for treasure. “Approved”-stamp in hand, Jupiter is blushing round with joy. “Forget about the destiny. It’s the pleasure of the fishing trip itself that counts!”

No Ocean Without Salt

Taking Jupiter’s enthusiasm with a grain of salt, Saturn points his old arthritis-finger to a mysterious cycle to which our September 7 eclipse belongs. On June 18, 1304, Saros Series 128 came into existence through a lunar eclipse at 4° Capricorn, ruled by an exalted Saturn in Libra, bitterly squaring the Lights. This Saros inheritance still lingers, threatening to poison the turquoise waters of the upcoming eclipse, especially since Saturn now joins the scene of action at the very last degree of Pisces. Arms crossed, Saturn is skeptical and determined to thoroughly critique both fish and garnish.

Since Moon/Saturn connections oftentimes tend to put that grain of salt on an open wound, the Pisces eclipse may stir some old pains and provoke avoidance or flat-out rejection. Saturn desperately tries to contain the flood of emotions but no matter how formidable the barriers built by your hard-won wisdom, a Piscean deluge does not want to be stopped.

Uranus, prominently present at the start of the current lunar cycle through a square to the Luminaries, always has a few wild cards for us. After just having made a U-turn, he’s driving the eclipse to a secret patch of shock-potential.

Consider the rhythm you live by ripe for interruption because there are forces in life that refuse to wait for permission. Uranus, true to his nature, steals the spotlight of the New Moon, and not politely. Bursting through the portal that leads us into eclipse season, he’s bent on rearranging reality in a single strike. This new beginning is not propelled by the soft tugs of desire and intention, so instead of asking yourself what you want, it’s time to face an unnerving question.

What is it that insists on living through you?

Allergic to habit and repetition, Uranus is enchanted by the tyranny of possibility and has to act on it. What can be done will be done because his neurons only flash with what could be. Pulled into the storm, Diplomat of Affections Venus does her best to waltz into Leo with grace on August 25, but when life erupts with hidden drives and unacknowledged longings, those we love become mirrors, accomplices, or, in the worst case scenario, casualties.

In rapid succession, Venus touches base with Saturn and Neptune through a trine, reaches Uranus by sextile, and also opposes Pluto. An appetite for anything considered unusual, alternative, mysterious, empowering, or liberating surges through our relationships in many shapes and forms. Given the current atmosphere, desire tends to grow into compulsion, and you may run the risk of upending more than necessary.

Although next to impossible when passions flare, Venus will do everything in her power to find creative compromises. Balancing authenticity with kindness is a tried-and-true leonine survival skill. This fiery Venus knows that there’s a fine line between candor and cruelty, but too much kindness can curdle into dishonesty.

Saturday’s New Moon is the first of a set of two New Moons in Virgo. I can’t help but think of this double occurrence as an appeal to scrutinize your actions carefully with the vigor of Virgo’s restless ruler Mercury. Impatient with imperfection, pointing out insufficiencies and discrepancies left and right - under Mercury’s supervision nothing is quite sacred enough not to be dismantled.

Clipboard in hand, old Saturn shows his quality control badge upon his return to Pisces on September 1 where he will inspect the preparations for eclipse season. His stern voice of conscience reminds us that it’s immature to set our own furniture on fire just to prove we’re free. No upheaval comes free of consequence.

Life in this strange world does not hold still. Stagnation is a myth, a fantasy we invent when we long for a pause button. If you want peace, you’ll have to cultivate it within. However, the message of this lunar cycle is clear. Uranus does not care for your carefully curated inner tranquility, so you might as well let him deliver you to a version of yourself you didn’t know was possible.
