Before Stanford, it felt like I was ramming my head into a brick (or cinder block) wall in an attempt to be heard among tech platforms that amplify schlock designed to be “engaging.”

Which is another way of saying, “people yelling at each other in the comments and sharing with other people who might also yell in the comments.”

So much was broken: social media, news, civil discourse, democracy, to name just a few.

Meanwhile, AI was on the rise as a savior/devil/boogeyman/cash cow/soul-eating extinction event.

As a strange combination of political cartoonist and animator who spent every week chained to a computer for far too long, I saw AI as a creation tool on steroids that could help me turn around quality work faster.

My first foray into artificial intelligence was mostly selfish: how can I use AI without stealing other people’s work in order to produce work that look like mine? (Backgrounds, assets for a scene, secondary characters, all of those things that help build a world in an animated short.)

There was nothing available to creatives that could do that.

So I asked around Stanford,

where I met some brilliant people.

. . . and subsequently co-founded a company along with Sally Herships, a professor at Columbia University who is head of the audio journalism department and in an earlier life, majored in illustration!

We named our company “The Artificial Intelligence Agency of San Francisco Incorporated” (partly as a pushback against the scads of startups with short, silly names like Splork, Buurp or Oinq).

You can just say “SFAI” for short, though.

As we prototyped creation tools that could quickly reproduce my style without ripping off other cartoonists, we realized something else.

We could help prevent work from being taken without consent in the first place.

Even though we began with tools that helped generate work in an ethical, responsible way, we quickly realized the importance of detection and protection.

There are ways to essentially see inside datasets and AI models! (Datasets are the mountains of images, text and audio that are used to train models.)

This is really about giving creatives (cartoonists, photographers, journalists, authors, podcasters, etc.) agency amid the chaos of AI.

Why not try to steer this behemoth of Wild West AI chaos into something we’d like to see?

Maybe it actually is possible to help shape things along the way — or at least try our damndest in our corner of creativity.

Why shouldn’t creatives and people who made the “intellectual property” be able to control it and even (*gasp*) get paid by AI companies profiting off their work?

The first step is to push back against the notion (intentionally promulgated by some big AI companies) that datasets and models are magic black boxes we can’t really do anything about.

The more we think of AI as a tool on steroids rather than some sort of mystical black box, the better off and more equipped we’ll be to maintain agency for humans.

And don’t worry, as I help build this company, I’ll still use an old-fashioned human hand manipulating a pen . . . to draw things on recycled squished trees in a sketchbook that seem to just beg for silly pictures.

Now, we just have to sit back and relax . . . while the United States and Israel keep blowing things up and killing civilians in Iran and Lebanon.

At least some Republicans have pushed back against Trump and called out Todd Blanche. We’ll see if this (gasp!) push-back amounts to anything or makes a bit of difference, besides giving Trump new names to add to his enemies list.

As you may have seen, I touched on the Trump slush fund corruption earlier this week.

As if the $1.8 billion pot of money available for Trump to dole out to violent January 6th insurrectionists wasn’t enough, recently the Department of Justice wiped its website of information related to criminal cases the DOJ previously filed against January 6th attackers.

There are apparently still plenty of ways that Trump can make what happened on January 6, 2021 even worse.

Legal settlements are generally overseen by a judge, but since Trump withdrew his $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS right before this was announced, it is only overseen by Trump and his lackeys.

But don’t worry, (acting) Attorney General Todd Blanche makes it look legal and even includes words like “settlement” and “corpus.”

Blanche even includes an “Obama-did-the-same-thing” clause, which is of course nonsense.

This is a Trump slush fund designed to continue his mission of anti-Biden political payback, literally.

Insurrection payouts, here we come!

And in a ridiculous bit of Orwellian projection (yes, both), the slush fund is called the “Anti-Weaponization Fund.”

An anti-weaponization fund that is weaponized from the outset.

And since they really are really just overgrown middle schoolers (with apologies to middle schoolers), Trump and Blanche chose the fund amount of $1.776 billion.

Get it? 1776? Like we learned about in Mrs. Bumbleton’s civics class when Stephen Miller was scratching racial slurs into the desk and Trump grabbed that girl’s boobie right before the bell rang? Wasn’t that hilarious!

This keleptocratic fund is quickly fading from the news — and will hopefully be blocked (or at least investigated) if we’re lucky enough to stem the tide of autocracy in the midterm elections.

I for one, hope my tax dollars will instead be used for a fund in the amount of $2.026 billion that investigates and prosecutes Trump and his fellow corrupt grifters.

Sure, they claim it’s just a partisan thing, but it sure looks like a racist thing when you gleefully try to squeeze out Mississippi’s only Black representative, among countless other actions.

As elections are being canceled or nullified, Louisiana politicians are pushing a bill to re-install those Confederate statues that white Southern Republicans seem to love so much.

Meanwhile, Trump ordered the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial drained and painted blue by his “pool guy” who worked on the pools at his golf club in Sterling, Virginia. (Trump later denied any connection to the contractor after the cost estimates went from $1.8 million to $13.1 million.)

So, as Black representation is under attack in Southern states and Confederate statues are going up, the public space that hosted one of the most pivotal moments of the civil rights struggle is being made over to look like a country club pool.

Of course, if a screenwriter wrote this as a political script, it would be a little too on the nose and obvious.

Since I’m always looking for silver linings, maybe our current silver lining is that these current events really are so obvious.

Racist white right-wingers are trying to go back to a time pre-civil rights, when everything (for them) was supposedly perfect and more eminently “American.”

And the Supreme Court and Trump administration are helping them do it.

Peace is at hand, unless we are presently annihilating a civilization.

Either way, everything is just fine unless it’s not.

Something tells me (and the rest of the world) that Trump and his sycophants don’t really know what they’re doing.

Sure, we sank the bulk of the Iranian navy. But what about that nuclear material, missiles and launchers, not to mention peace and freedom for the Iranian people?

Well, one out of four or five ain’t bad.

As of this writing, it doesn’t sound very much like peace is at hand, let alone a cease fire is in effect.

Is it just me, or does reporting about Iran striking three (3!) U.S. destroyers sound fairly calm and tempered, like this sort of thing happens every day. (Which now, apparently, it does.)

This, from the Guardian . . .

“The US military said it targeted sites responsible for attacking three US destroyers transiting the strait, in what it called “unprovoked” hostilities by Tehran. Iran’s Press TV reported that after several hours of fire “the situation on Iranian islands and coastal cities by the strait of Hormuz is back to normal now”.

The United Arab Emirates said it had intercepted Iranian missile and drone attacks hours after the US said it thwarted attacks on the USS Truxtun, USS Rafael Peralta and USS Mason.”

. . . Which led Trump to call the strikes a “love tap.”

So much love, these guys.

There has never been such a seat-of-the-pants approach to U.S. foreign policy.

And by “foreign policy,” I mean the policy of lobbing munitions at people in another country. There is no policy, it’s just cultists doing what the crazy old guy wants them to do at a given moment in the day.

In his latest bit (as of this writing) of quasi-religious pablum, Hegseth again compared people who oppose the Iran war to Pharisees.

This time, ol’ Whiskey Pete said Democrats and the press are just like the Pharisees in the time of Jesus.

In other words, if you oppose Trump’s stupid and child-killing war on Iran, you are just like the Jewish people who killed Jesus. Follow?

There is plenty of Trump-as-Jesus talk coming out of this administration — hopefully enough to drive away some of Trump’s evangelical followers, who may have a thing against blasphemy.

That is the only silver lining I can find in the Christian nationalist turn of this administration: may the scales fall from his followers’ eyes, the planks be removed and may they see Trump as the false idol/huckster that he is.

Makes me feel like flipping over some tables down at the Temple of Trump!

I gave Hegseth a higher more cartoony voice for this animation — my previous Pete puppet had a lower, more realistic voice.

Even though Hegseth sounds like a tough, annoying frat boy, as a cartoon I like him to sound like a hyped-up steroid user on helium.

(And yes, he is wearing pants.)

Amid that backdrop, our reliance on ships filled with squished dinosaur goo that travel the globe has come into a sharper focus as the Strait of Hormuz is alternately closed by Iran or blockaded by the United States.

Earth Day and Climate Week are important in times like this, although it’s hard to be heard over the noise of exploding munitions fired at oil tankers and cargo ships, drones crashing into expensive waterfront buildings and neighborhoods being leveled.

On the bright side, with oil approaching seven dollars a gallon (at least near my home), EVs and bicycles may have a newfound appeal — no matter how hard the Trumpist right says they are an affront to our Good Ol’ 'American Freedom.

So, maybe now is a good time to realize there are very viable alternatives to polluting fossil fuels that kill humans and our planet.

The juxtaposition of Earth Day and the chaos in the Middle East means that this cartoon basically wrote itself. (And in full ambulance-chasing disclosure, it was a fun one to draw.)

Once his anti-papal tirades were unleashed and sparked outrage, Trump thought the best response was to post a blasphemous AI-generated image of himself as Jesus, bestowing light-inducing miracles on the sick.

Not content with a little social media blasphemy, the Anti-Christ-in-Chief followed it up with a lie.

Trump clarified that he really thought the image was merely depicting himself as a doctor, not Jesus.

Of course! Doctors always use angelic balls of light to heal people while they are wearing flowing robes.

In other news, on the behind-the-scenes cartooning side, I’m switching to Procreate. (I’ve been using Clip Studio Pro for years, since my good friend and amazing artist, Ed Hall, who sadly passed away in 2024, recommended it to me back in 2015.)

This cartoon is the first one I’ve drawn using the new tools, which has a handy time-lapse capture feature.

And, wow, it does a much better job of capturing the drawing portion. (And shows all of my early sketching drawing frustration!)

In some of our later conversations, Ed mentioned he had enjoyed drawing with Procreate, so I switched over again.

You see, Ed was a much better fine artist than me, so I put a lot of weight in what he was using to draw and paint digitally.

Ed would have loved (and hated) the craziness Trump unleashed on the Pope.

The former Fox News weekend host is ecstatic as he wields the levers and buttons of power and death.

This guy fancies himself a Christian and wants everybody to know it — with his tattoos, his apocalyptic prayers and his love for all the most violent parts of the Bible.

The U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran have targeted not one, but two schools (so far) and deployed weapons never before seen on the battlefield, let alone on civilian locations.

We now have a situation where three countries led by irrational religious zealots are going at it and unwilling to back down.

You have to look very hard to find any rational thought in this whole equation.

It is particularly chilling to remember that “Secretary of War” Pete Hegseth was flagged as an “insider threat” in 2021.

Unfortunately, now there is no doubt that he truly is an insider threat.

I highly recommend everyone read the email that brought attention to Hegseth’s then commanders.

On a more optimistic note, once you’ve waded through the hatred and irrationality of the U.S. war on Iran, be sure to watch this clip from the Artemis II crew as they head to the moon.

It’s a powerful attempt at putting everything in perspective, which we sorely need right now.

Clearly, sending ICE agents to U.S. airports is not really about helping beleaguered TSA agents, it’s just another step on the path to numbing us to autocracy.

In case it wasn’t abundantly clear in Minneapolis, ICE is not focused on immigration and customs. It’s a government-funded militia focused on supporting Trump.

And now they’re in our airports.

The madness of Trump has brought us full circle: airport security is short staffed because Democratic lawmakers refuse to fund the Department of Homeland Security without reining in ICE — so Trump sets ICE loose on airports.

Revenge and the potential for violence, how very Trumpian.

Meanwhile, it appears that draconian personnel cuts and repeated government shutdowns may have an impact on safety at airports and in the skies.

It might be the time to just drive, if the price of oil isn’t currently at $120 a barrel.

It’s all going according to plan, they say, it’s just “fake news” that the U.S.A. is not victorious.

The Trump administration really doesn’t want us to mention that oil tankers are being attacked in the Strait of Hormuz and the price of oil is nearly $110 a barrel.

Meanwhile, United States Secretary of Defense “Whiskey Pete” Hegseth issued a fatwa against press photographers who do not capture him in flattering poses (Yes, he has time for that.) and FCC Chair Brendan Carr threatened to revoke broadcast licenses over unfavorable reporting on the Iran war.

Apparently if the war is not a cakewalk, you can always attack the media. (Again.)

I’m curious how long it will be before Trump, Hegseth and crew transition from blaming the media for not reporting good things to blaming the media for the war’s bad things.

At some point, Trump will probably just cut his losses and declare the biggest victory in the history of history.

Either that, or he’ll drop a nuke.

Making predictions about what Trump will do next is like trying to predict what part of the wall a monkey will throw its poop.

(Apologies to monkeys everywhere for that analogy.)

Remember during Trump’s first term when military leaders were a moderating influence on our Psychopath-in-Chief?

Well, during this go-round, Trump has made a point of finding pliable “leaders” who won’t question his most dangerous wants and desires.

Look no further than Pete “Wargasm” Hegseth and the military leaders touting the war on Iran as “all part of God’s divine plan.” (aka: Armageddon.)

Well that doesn’t seem like a very well thought out regime-change plan.

It’s about nukes. It’s about freedom. It’s about regime change. It’s about democracy! It’s about Tremendous Social Media Content!™️

Actually, it’s about whatever they want it to be about as long as they can use all those neat weapons that go boom!

And if we’re running out of boom-devices, Trump is hard at work meeting with war profiteers defense contractors at the White House. (The Reuters article that is linked here offers handy links to current stock prices of the death merchants at the meeting.)

Sadly, my earlier cartooning career began with warning about the folly of bombing people into democracy and now here I am doing it again.

(This cartoon is a none-too-subtle riff on the old saying, “the beatings will continue until morale improves.” Same principle, different usage.)

I never thought we’d be in a situation that was even more unhinged, illegal and reprehensible than what George W. Bush did in Iraq.

Sigh. The good ol’ days, when America’s president had the decency to lie to Congress about why we needed to declare war.

Now, our very own dictator just goes ahead and does it.

. . . And his sycophantic Secretary of Defense gleefully talks about how our Iran attack delivered twice the firepower of the “shock and awe” opening attack of 2003 Iraq.

Meanwhile, Israel keeps bombing Lebanon and Iran continues to lob attack drones at surrounding Gulf countries.

Something tells me this is going to get worser and worser . . .

Donald Trump is an unstable child of privilege who lied his way to riches and fame and just ordered the world’s most powerful military to start a war that will likely lead to a wider conflict/war/WWIII.

If you think there is some well thought out, grander plan behind Trump’s dangerous play, think again.

Trump just wants to blow stuff up and be a tough guy — oh, and ideally make money in the process.

That’s it. That is the extent of his foreign policy wants and desires.

There is no more there there. Everything you need to know about Trump — foreign, domestic, fiscal policy or otherwise — can be learned by looking at how he conducted his business and personal life starting in the early 1980s.

I HIGHLY recommend you read “Lucky Loser” by Russ Buettner and Susanne Craig, two New York Times reporters who dug though piles of Trump tax returns and interviewed countless people from his life. (Thanks to my father-in-law for turning me on to this great book!)

Everything Trump did over his life just keeps repeating itself: oversell, lie and do exactly what you want to do with no regard for the consequences.

It’s one thing to do that when you are dealing with shady real estate deals, it’s quite another when you’re dealing with the US military, unstable regimes and millions of human lives.

Unfortunately, I think Trump is just itching to use a tactical nuke and we’ll probably see him use one before he is out of the picture.

Before the current Trump-spawned conflagration, it was comical how much he wanted to be seen as a peacemaker.

Unlike Trump’s business life, if you screw up with peace, you can’t just declare bankruptcy.

NPR is reporting that the United States Department of Justice (aka, Trump’s lawyers) “withheld and removed” a number of documents from the Epstein files that relate to Trump.

Is this like Nixon’s missing 18.5-minute gap in the Watergate tapes? Probably, and likely much worse.

It just so happens that these particular missing parts of the Epstein files relate to allegations that Trump sexually abused a minor.

According to NPR,

“these include what appear to be more than 50 pages of FBI interviews, as well as notes from conversations with a woman who accused Trump of sexual abuse decades ago when she was a minor.”

So, consider the backdrop as Trump rants and raves tonight…

Remember CNN’s Van Jones stupidly saying during a 2017 speech before a joint session of Congress, that tonight, Trump “became president of the United States?”

Well, never mind becoming president. Today, Trump is one step closer to becoming a confirmed pedophile.

It seems like a hundred years ago, thinking back to Trump’s first SOTU address, when so many people kept waiting for him to moderate, become sane or show some semblance of compassion and humanity.

With more revelations and more time in office, the layers of Donald Trump’s blackened heart are endlessly peeled back, revealing nothing but cruelty and paranoia.

Today I scribbled in my sketchbook:

Even though each of those bullet points deserve a week’s worth of animation, I went with a quick cartoon about the “Board of Peace,” which should always be in quotes, since it’s not really a board and it’s not really about peace.

It appears to be nothing more than Trump’s plaything so he can dunk on the UN and collect more sycophants to kick in billions.

Britain, France and Canada are OUT, Saudi Arabia, Belarus and Kazakhstan are IN!

Meanwhile, BOP member-nation Azerbaijan beat up protesters in Washington, DC who were calling for the release of political prisoners.

Hmmm, maybe this group isn’t about peace at all.

Good thing that Donald Trump, the inaugural chairman of the organization, has veto power and can stay in his vaunted position even after his presidency, that’ll give him time to work out any kinks in the organization.

But don’t worry, Trump, Jared and Steve Witkoff will fix Gaza right up, trust them!

Okay, I’ll try not to get too pessimistic and snarky now.

One story that came and went (amid news of more ICE lying and future concentration camps being arranged) was about the US Environmental Protection Agency rolling back the “endangerment finding.”

Beside the fact that this is a horrible thing that will speed climate change and give a huge win to huge fossil fuel corporations, I was struck by the level of ridiculousness, lying and disinformation spewed by the Trump administration as the change was announced.

My two favorite? Trump saying “fossil fuels have saved millions of lives” and interior secretary Doug Burgum babbling on Fox News that plants “thrive with more CO2.”

Next up: drink petroleum, it’s great for your teeth and gums!

If you’re like me, you’re feeling very overwhelmed by the speed of awfulness coming out of the Trump administration right now.

It really is a firehose of evil that keeps pumping out terrible new policies before we’ve had any time to react to the previous one(s).

Which is, of course, the idea

This story is still somewhat murky, but it was too ridiculous for me to pass up. Especially since the Department of Defense (or “Department of War” if you like renaming things to harken back to a time when the fascists were in Europe, not 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue) shared an image that looks like it was created by a 16-year-old with limited Photoshop skills.

What they are trying to convey is that America, represented by a mighty bald eagle (with eyes blurred out from loving patriotism so much) will blast tiny evil drones from the sky by using some powerful laser beam that also loves patriots, apple pie and Trump.

And since I am a smart-ass who could not resist going for the visual catnip that is 1.) laser beams, 2.) bald eagles 3.) drones and 4.) balloons, I just had to create a cartoon version of the “Department of War CTO” post.

Compared to the numerous Trump administration social media posts that are shout-outs to the good ol’ Nazi days, this image is fairly mild — yet doesn’t accurately portray blasting harmless balloons out of the sky.

Which is why I had to create this simple cartoon/Trump-ready social media image:

As details continue to emerge, one thing seems pretty certain: this administration is filled with trigger-happy idiots who should not be allowed anywhere near the levers of power.

Too late for that, I guess.

And if you’re an escaped/illegal party balloon floating anywhere near our Southern Border, just know that there is nowhere for you to hide.

We will find you and blast you from the sky!

That sentence seems like hyperbole but unfortunately it’s not. Armed federal agents arrested two independent journalists late last night and early this morning.

Remember 30 seconds ago this week when Donald Trump booted Greg Bovino and we were all breathing a sigh of relief that some sense of sanity may be coming to the administration?

Well, since that brief moment, Trump has appointed his border czar — remember, the same guy who accepted a $50,000 cash bribe delivered in a fast-food bag — to replace Bovino.

And the next day, the FBI raided the Fulton County, Georgia election office.

Soon after that, Attorney General Pam Bondi reported that she had ordered independent journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort to be arrested “at my direction.”

The arrests came after a federal magistrate, an appellate court and multiple federal prosecutors refused to go along with the arrests.

But never fear, when it comes to trampling democracy, Trump and Bondi will find a way!

We are seeing before our very eyes, day after day, the Trump cult undermine the rule of law and march us to authoritarianism.

It’s encouraging that people standing up to federal agents terrorizing their Minneapolis neighborhoods seems to have resulted in Bovino’s firing.

There are other hopeful signs out of Minnesota as well, with a federal judge attempting to hold ICE’s acting administrator to account.

The Trump administration can (and probably will) just say no, vilify the judge and take the case to its sycophants on the Supreme Court, but let’s at least celebrate a smidge while we can.
