Hi everyone!

Here’s another piece of creative advice from the Akashic field, and this one is in response to an email sent to me by K. I didn’t receive any other emails since K messaged me, so send me your questions if you have any. You can find the guidelines at the bottom of this page.

Here’s what K wrote:

Dear Mariëlle,

Since January, I have been struggling with an inexplicable increase in migraine attacks. (Don’t worry, my GP is doing what he can and I’m seeing an osteopath.)

My social life and writing time are at a minimum, which is beyond frustrating. I just wanna write my next book, cause it’s going to be so wholesome and relaxing!

Do my Record Keepers have any information or advice about the stuck tension in my body? How can I free up more energy and headspace for creative work, or accept that it’s just not possible for a while?

And here’s my reply:

Dear K,

I’m so sorry about this. I’m no stranger to migraines, and I know just how debilitating they can be. I’m always careful when asking the Akashic Records about health-related challenges, because I’m obviously not a doctor and shouldn’t be giving medical advice (and I won’t). As such, I checked in with my own Records first to make sure whether it was OK to ask your question. When I received the go-ahead, I opened your Records.

Upon opening your Records, I immediately began to yawn excessively. To me, this is always a sign that energy is starting to move around and being released. Having read your letter, this didn’t surprise me in the least.

Because I couldn’t stop yawning, I started the reading by asking your Record Keepers whether there was anything that needed releasing right away, and then I asked them to release this for you. This took a couple of minutes, during which I received a clear image of something contracting near the base of your spine, something that was pulling on all the surrounding tissue and muscles, all the way up to your head, the base of your skull. It felt very tight, like your spine was bending backwards.

I asked your Record Keepers what caused that pull, that contraction, and I actually did receive the phrase ‘Bending over backwards’ at this point. They showed me your sacral and solar plexus chakra, so the centre of your wants and desires and that of your willpower. They told me you are putting your own wants and desires beneath that of others, which is causing your sacral chakra to be pulled back towards your spine. At the same time, you’re using your willpower not to fully achieve your own dreams but to help others achieve theirs, causing your solar plexus chakra to be pushed forwards, so it can serve someone else’s wants and desires.

Energetically, this is causing your spine to bend backwards (your sacral chakra is being pulled towards your spine while your solar plexus chakra is shoved outwards, away from your space), which is creating a tension that’s radiating outwards to the rest of your body.

Here, I felt the need to ask how current this situation was, and what I received was that this disbalance is an effect of something you’ve already done, but it isn’t something that’s had closure yet. You might be open to doing it again (for others) even if it isn’t what you really want and what you’re truly here for.

Next, I asked what lesson you have to learn here, and this is what I got:

• Your dreams are allowed to change, to develop. This isn’t a change of mind, this is part of your personal evolution.

• You need to become clear on to what extent your dreams and desires, and your wants and needs, overlap with someone else’s before you agree to work with them so you can step into the dynamic with conscious intent. To do this, you need to become clear on what you’re willing to compensate on; what you’re neutral about; and what your dealbreakers are. Full alignment isn’t necessary, but the work and the person you’ll be doing it with need to be aligned enough, and you need to meditate on where exactly that boundary is for you.

To gain some more clarity, I then asked whether this sprung from this current lifetime or a previous one, and here’s what I received:

Showing up for what you truly, madly, deeply want for yourself has been a tricky one for a while now. I saw a pattern across a couple of lifetimes, and the pattern was you telling yourself ‘it’ll do’. If something felt barely aligned enough, you’d convince yourself to take the opportunity anyway, because ‘You can’t always get what you want.’ But here’s the thing your Record Keepers showed me as well: we love to say ‘You might not get what you want, but you’ll get what you need.’ In your case, however, it’s clear that you kept telling yourself that, that you’d probably get what you need, but you often didn’t. Your Record Keepers would love for you to stop telling yourself that and to start asking yourself what you want instead and to go after it with intent.

I then asked what you could do this lifetime to fully release this pattern, and they gave me a whole list:

• ‘K needs to explore what they truly want by listening to their body. What does their underbelly do? Does it expand or further constrict towards their spine? And what does their stomach do, their solar plexus? Does it expand or constrict? If it expands, is that its natural response or is it being shoved forwards out of habit? If K releases their hold on it, how does their solar plexus respond then? These are all signs that tell whether or not something’s aligned with them.’

• ‘K needs to practise radical honesty about what they want to achieve this lifetime. First to themselves, and then to others. If any fears or limiting beliefs come up, they need to examine them, process them, release them, and then allow the space these fears and thoughts left behind to be filled up with something constructive, something that’s supporting their soul.’

Because we are asking a question here that’s related to the physical body, I explicitly asked your Record Keepers whether they had any advice on the physical aspect of this reading, and here’s what they told me:

• They brought up activities that strengthen and/or heal the second chakra, such as yoga or walking in nature, and that you need to take great care of your mental, emotional, and physical body. If you’re into yoga, there are lots of asanas that help with the sacral chakra (and the solar plexus chakra) to get that stuck energy moving again and to bring balance back in that area of your body.

• Another thing they suggested was tending to your sacral chakra, for example by eating foods and drinking beverages that support the second chakra (such as orange fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and ginger, cinnamon, or calendula tea), work with essential oils if that’s your thing (such as orange, sandalwood, cinnamon, bergamot, and ylang-ylang). Of course, if you’re into crystals, you could also wear those that correspond to the sacral chakra or put them in your pocket (think citrine, orange calcite, carnelian, amber, moonstone, and so on).

They also want you to remember that this takes time, so you need to be gentle with yourself. They also said: ‘Pamper that second chakra!’

Feeling the reading was reaching its end, I then asked whether there was anything else your Record Keepers wanted to share with you today, and here’s what I got:

‘Honour yourself. Honour your soul and what it came here to do.’

I then closed your Records.

Dear K, I know this isn’t medical advice – and it should definitely not be taking as such – but I hope that pampering your second chakra (and becoming intentional with your third chakra and who you activate it for) will help to start shifting that stuck energy that’s holding you back so much right now.

Today’s letter came from Alex, and here’s what they wrote:

Hi Marielle, hope you’re well.

I’ve started writing again, and that’s great. I’ve started publishing again too, and that’s also great. But I can’t bring myself to do any marketing. It’s like I’ve used up all my ideas and confidence in the rest of the process, and I feel sleazy just trying to think about it. How do I believe in myself, my books, and the readers enough to market the books?

And here’s my response:

Hi Alex!

I’m so excited you’re writing and publishing again! That’s such great news.

Thank you so much for this question. I know many creatives (myself included) who struggle with this exact same thing, for similar and different reasons.

When I’d opened your Akashic Records, the image I was provided with was that of a bay. I was looking at it from above, so I was able to see the beach, the water inside the bay, the surf with its breaking waves, and the still ocean beyond.

It took a moment for the message to come through, but what your Record Keepers were trying to show here was that you can stay inside the safety of the bay – which is a contained space – or you can break away by making your way through the surf – which can be hard and scary – by expanding beyond the bay towards the horizon.

Once the image had settled, I asked: Why can’t Alex bring themself to do any marketing?

It immediately felt as if my solar plexus chakra – the seat of our willpower – was pulling in towards my spine. It felt like a retreat, an abort mission! There’s fear here, and there’s a knee-jerk reaction to hide.

I next asked your Record Keepers what you’re hiding from exactly. The scene unfolding in front of me was of you being belittled when sharing your work with someone you thought would care and appreciate it and the effort you’d put in it.

Because I couldn’t quite sense whether this scene belonged in this current life or a past one, I asked, and the answer I received was: ‘Instances of this have happened across time and space.’ So this is something that has happened to you in multiple lifetimes.

At this point, I asked: How can Alex release this pattern?

What I was shown was you with three or four people, and each of these people was holding a thick cord running to your solar plexus. These cords were connected via your back, which is why I felt my solar plexus pulling back: these cords function as energetic reins that pull you back when you try to leave the shadows behind and step into the light.

Here, I asked what to do about these cords, and the Record Keepers are encouraging you to sit with them and meditate on what you want to do with them, how you want to release them. With the help of your guides, I’ll be able to cut them for you, but they expressly told me not to yet. They want you to have a good think about it first. If you decide you want my help with that, just let me know and we can get those cords sorted.

I then asked the main question posed in your letter: How can Alex begin to believe in themself, their books, and their readers enough to market their books?

The first piece of advice they gave shouldn’t come as a surprise: they want you to prioritise getting rid of those cords in a way that resonates with you.

The second piece of advice is that you have to begin making waves, starting by making some ripples and allowing these to spread wider and wider, grow taller and taller, until your waves are big and strong enough to break through the surf and bleed into the ocean beyond.

While I love that image, it wasn’t the most practical bit of advice, so I asked your Record Keepers whether they had any concrete or practical advice or steps for you. And here’s what they said:

‘Alex needs to start by expanding their comfort zone little by little, by starting where they are and with whom and what they know. Once they feel more comfortable there, they gently push outwards a little, until they’re comfortable enough there. Then they have to push outwards again, and so on and so forth.’

Feeling the reading was coming to an end, I asked: Is there anything else we need to know about this reading?

What I received was that you need to remember that this fear belongs entirely in the past. You shouldn’t have let it stop you then, and you shouldn’t let it stop you now. Nothing bad is going to happen to you once you’ve made it through the surf. The ocean is a safe place for you; it’s where you belong.

They also reiterated that you need to go about this one step at a time. If you’re taking steps that are actually too large for you, your fears will get triggered and your ego will drag you back to the smallest version of your comfort zone. Handle yourself with care so that there’s enough room for curiosity, joy, and gratitude that you’re doing the work and you’re doing it well.

After this message, I thanked your Record Keepers and closed your Records.

Here’s your mantra for the week! This week’s card is from my Cards for Creative Courage oracle deck, which you can get it here or here. Founding members can get it for free with their subscription.

When was the last time you felt thwarted in your creative pursuits? The last time your path was blocked by some sort of obstacle or barrier?

This card – There’s no obstacle you can’t handle – showed up for me this weekend, and it had me thinking about obstacles (I’m as shooketh as you are, honestly) and why they showed up in our lives and on our paths.

The card itself is meant as a reassurance, something to draw the energy and willpower from that you need to tackle whatever has gotten in your way.

But what if some obstacles don’t need to be tackled? What if they just need to be? Not all obstacles need us to remove or overcome them. Sometimes, these obstacles will remove themselves or will be removed by others in due time.

Sometimes, an obstacle isn’t actually a barrier at all but a window or door that’s waiting to be opened.

Sometimes, an obstacle needs to be listened to and understood. It needs to be seen for what it truly is, what it’s truly there to show you.

Upon first sight, we won’t know what an obstacle is about. All we see is a barrier to what we’re trying to achieve, to the destination we’ve set for ourselves. But what if we took a moment to really look at what’s in front of us? A moment to listen, to contemplate, to figure out – properly and patiently – how the obstacle we’re faced with needs to be handled, wants to be handled, if it needs any handling at all.

I wrote the guided meditation below to create that moment, to hold that space, for you to meet the obstacle ahead of you where you’re at and where the obstacle’s at.

I’ll be recording the audio version of this as soon as I can (which might not be soon as I have a backlog of meditations I need to finish and publish), but I invite you to work with this written version until then. Let me know how it went?

There’s no obstacle I can’t handle

We’ll begin this journey by closing our eyes and taking a couple of deep breaths in and out. For this particular visualisation, I recommend five to seven rounds of box breathing (breathing in for four counts, holding in for four counts, breathing out for four counts, holding out for four counts) or whichever breathing exercise you prefer to get settled and centred.

Visualise the path you’re currently on. What does it look like? Allow yourself time to get a good grasp on your path, on where it is, in what kind of location, where it started, where it’s headed, on what’s happening to the left and right of you.

Take a moment to ask yourself what your path feels like to you. When you look around yourself and truly acknowledge your surroundings, what does it to do you? To your heart rate? To your nervous system? Where are you feeling this in your body, what this path is doing to you? And what does that feel like?

How are you moving along on this path? Are you walking, cycling, driving? Are you crawling or hopping? If you’re using any mode of transportation, what are you using? How are you currently moving towards your destination?

You don’t have to form an opinion about anything that’s happening here; try to just observe.

Keep moving forwards until you hit the next obstacle on your path. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve had a run-in with this particular obstacle before. Just keep moving forwards until you come across the first obstacle on the road or track or trail you’re on.

Stop here. Take a deep breath as you observe the obstacle. What does it look like? What size does it have? Is it big or small? Does it have any particular shape? Does it have a colour, or a smell? Is it sentient or not? Is it a living, breathing thing? Something or someone you recognise?

As you observe, keep as much distance from the obstacle as you need. You need to feel safe and centred to fully engage with this obstacle, so please honour that.

How does the obstacle make you feel? And where do you feel that in your body? Can you point at it? Can you breathe towards it, through it, for a couple of rounds?

Now, if it feels safe and doable, place your hands on the obstacle. If that doesn’t work for you or the obstacle right now, place one of your hands on your heart and the other on your belly as you keep your eyes on the obstacle in front of you.

Breathe in deeply, and feel the obstacle (or your own body) underneath your hands. Breathe into your hands, into the obstacle or your own body, as you ask the obstacle why it’s here.

What is it doing here? Why is it here on this part of your path?

Once you’ve received a clear enough answer, ask the obstacle why it’s here now.

Is there any significance to it showing up now, in this moment, on this specific part of your path?

When you’re both ready to move on to the next question, ask the obstacle whether there’s anything it wants or needs from you.

Is there anything it wants you to do? Is there anything it needs you to do?

Next, we’re going to ask the obstacle how best to overcome it.

How can you best overcome this obstacle? By circumventing it, by going over it, by going through it, or by letting it be?

Once you’ve received an answer to that question, ask the obstacle what that would look like.

What would overcoming it in the suggested way look like? What do you have to keep in mind about this?

For our last question, we’re asking the obstacle whether there’s anything else it wants to tell you.

Does it have any messages for you? Is there anything it wants you to know that it hasn’t shared with you yet?

If you had your hands on the obstacle, release it now and create some distance between you two. Now, imagine a future version of yourself who’s overcome this obstacle, who’s made their way past the obstacle, and ask them about it.

In hindsight, what do you know now about this obstacle that you didn’t when you still had it in front of you? What did you learn from and about the obstacle and getting beyond it? Is there anything your future self wants you to know about the obstacle right now? Do they have any tips and tricks for you to make it past this obstacle?

When you’re ready, thank your future self for showing up for you at this time and allow them to be on their way. Next, thank the obstacle for answering your questions and for the lessons it has in store for you.

Step away from the obstacle and close your eyes. Take a couple of deep breaths in and out and allow yourself to return to the space you’re in. Write down anything you wish to remember about this journey, and don’t forget to be grateful to yourself for taking the time to do this work.

Good morning, everyone!

I’m in the middle of lots of book stuff (my latest Kickstarter went live yesterday and Tarot for Creatives is coming to the public in forty day), so it was lovely to take a moment away from that and focus on my work with the Akashic Records.

Today’s letter is from Joan. This is what she wrote:

Dear Mariëlle:

A friend forwarded me your call for questions because I am writing a memoire.

The book talks a lot about multigenerational trauma and I’m wondering if the ancestors have anything they want me to know? I feel them so strongly around me while I’m writing and I want to honor their voices.

And here’s my response.

Dear Joan,

Thank you so much for this question. Ever since it arrived in my inbox, I’ve been looking forward to sitting with your ancestors, and today was the day I finally got to do it.

So here’s what happened during the reading:

Once I’d opened your Akashic Records, I received this visual of you writing – in different places, from you sitting at a desk in a dark room to you sitting on a blanket in an open field with a typewriter – with a whole bunch of people forming a half circle behind you. It’s was very clear to me that they are being supportive of the work you’re doing and that they’re understanding that your story is also their story.

I asked whether any of your ancestors have anything they wanted you to know, and the visual shifted to that of a courtyard. At the centre of the space, there was a fire pit, and all your ancestors had gathered around it, sitting together as if ready to share their stories.

The first to speak up was a man, and he was urging you to not downplay the behaviours of your male ancestors, that it’s OK to share what you know about them, and that you should feel free to be as critical about them as you need to be. He himself had, in his words, not been ‘a good man’ in his lifetime and has seen with his own eyes that there’s no growth if people keep holding a hand over each other’s head, making excuses for their behaviour by being too understanding of their ‘plight’.

I don’t know who this man was, but he’s giving you blanket permission to be brutally honest about the roles the man in your lineage have played in establishing unhealthy family patterns and dynamics. He wants these to end.

Sometimes, ancestors need something from us to be able to move on, so I asked this man whether he needed anything. His answer was: ‘I don’t need to be forgiven. What I need is for our story to be told so others don’t repeat our mistakes.’

I thanked him for his presence and his words, and then asked whether any other ancestors had anything they wanted you to know.

It took a moment, but eventually a woman showed herself partially. She was mostly hidden in the shadows, and it was hard for her to speak up. As she was struggling to formulate words, I kept receiving images of her being punished for following her heart, and punished in such a way that she became a shell of who she used to be.

When she finally spoke up, she said: ‘If you can, tell my story.’

I asked her whether there was anything in particular she wanted you to know about her story, and she gave me the following: ‘We were punished for being expressive, passionate, for having dreams that didn’t fit the status quo.’

She explained that she wants you to focus less on how they became victims and more on what she and the other women in your lineage have in common. They had passion, that desire to express themselves, the ability to dream, and the willpower to see if they could make those dreams happen, despite the odds. That’s what she doesn’t want to be forgotten when the story of this lineage is told.

When she retreated back into the shadows, I thanked her and asked whether there was anyone else who wanted the floor. No one spoke up, but a lot of the women were smiling. Most of the men had a more serious look on their face, but some of them were looking quite determined. No one said it in this many words, but it was clear that not all of them were fully ready to be held accountable for the part they played. They knew they had to be, but the reluctance was strong in some of them.

Since no one else spoke up, I asked: How can Joan best honour your voices?

The answer I received was a collective one. Instead of one person speaking up, it sounded as if multiple people were speaking with the same voice. Here’s what they said:

‘We want Joan to be mindful about the times the different people in her story lived in, but we don’t want her to turn these times into excuses. Accountability is key and she needs to allow room for us to be accountable, to admit to our wrongdoing, without hiding behind living in a society that enabled these wrongdoings. We are not just products of our time, and we need to be held accountable as much as the times we grew up in need to be. It’s not either our own fault or that of society, it’s both and.’

Once it was clear this was all they had to say about how you can best honour their voices, I asked whether there was anything else they wanted to share with you, either about your memoir or the generational trauma you’re addressing in it. They showed me an image of you finishing the book, publishing the book, and that moment being the moment that gives them wings and sets them free. Your book ending up in the hands of readers is what will destroy any energetic ties that are keeping your ancestors stuck, whether fully or partially, in those times, in those incarnations.

They also shared they don’t want you to feel rushed on their behalf, because they have all the time in the world. They want to see the book finished for your sake, their own sake, and for the sake of those for whom your story will become part of their healing process.

The final message they had for you was that they just want you to keep going and to keep being painfully honest because that’s part of your authentic voice.

I then closed your Records.

Good morning, everyone! Welcome to this third piece of Creative Advice from the Akashic Field.

Today’s letter was sent to me by Charlotte. Here’s what she wrote:

Dear Mariëlle,

My mum passed away back in November and while I have been writing, I haven’t been able to get into the flow of my work I feel like since then. I am still telling stories, but it’s short bursts or scenes and I don’t seem to be able to pull myself into that flow that used to be very natural for me.

Is there a way to help connect myself back towards that while still dealing with my grief?

And here’s my response:

Dear Charlotte,

Thank you so much for your letter. As someone who couldn’t write for what felt like ages (nine months, give or take a couple of days) after her mum passed, your question truly hit home for me. At the time, I was already used to the ebb and flow of my creativity, so it didn’t worry me too much that it took this *long* for my own flow to start back up, although I have to admit I started having my doubts near the end of that nine-month draught as well.

Here’s what showed up during the reading I did for you.

As soon as I opened your Akashic Records, I received this image of a whirlpool. Having lived near water my entire life, I’m not a fan, but it became clear almost immediately that this wasn’t a whirlpool we needed to be afraid of. We were being invited to step away from it and look at it as if it were a dance, a divine choreagraphy.

After a moment, the whirlpool started feeling like a waterslide, and this reminder came through to perceive this as an adventure, to think of diving headfirst into the whirlpool as going down one of those fancy waterslides with all kinds of twists and turns.

There was someone at the top of the whirlpool, looking down into it. They were hesitant to dive in, because who will they be once they surface again at the very end of it? The invitation here is to both go through it — dive into the whirlpool — and to observe from a distance what this journey does to you. What do you notice about yourself as you make your way down? What’s happening to you in that process?

Here, I decided to ask why we were seeing this, and your Record Keepers cheekily answered: You’re here to ask about flow. That — the whirlpool — is the current flow. They were also quite amused at being able to use the word ‘current’ in this context.

Here’s what they had to say about flow:

Flow, and the current of that flow, are not stable and unchanging. Different conditions determine what our flow looks like, from the lay of the land to the weather, to where sediment decides to land, to natural disasters and so much more.

The passing of Charlotte’s mum is such a changing condition, and it’s affected her creative flow in unforeseen ways. But the flow is still there, and Charlotte already has proof of that: she’s still writing, it’s just not in the way she’s used to. It’s choppy, like the waters she’s currently in. There’s less control because this current is unpredictable, which is why she’s able to grab only bits and pieces of writing here and there as she’s trying to ride these waves.

Here, I asked: What advice do you have for Charlotte regarding this? And this is what they gave me:

There are ways to make Charlotte’s current journey go smoother. She could get a life jacket, that is, things that she needs right now to stay afloat, to keep her head above the water.

Your Record Keepers then asked me to ask you whether you’re grounding and centring yourself daily, and whether you’ve been practising gratitude to the writing that is still coming through for you. For them, these are examples of things that might help you return to yourself and stay there.

Another image they shared with me was that of a zodiac boat, and the question they want you to ask yourself here is: What do you need to feel like you’re being carried through this chapter of your life? The more carried and supported you’ll feel, the easier it will be to grab those bits and pieces of writing as you float past them and keep them safe in your boat. With a proper support system, it doesn’t matter as much what the current is doing. You’re not treading water, desperate to keep your head above the waves, fully occupied with where you’re going and when the water will start calming down again. This will make it easier to instead focus on what’s in the water around you and to draw that in.

Next, your Record Keepers shared the following:

That Charlotte’s current flow is different doesn’t mean it’s better or worse than what was before. It’s simply unfamiliar, but that’s where opportunities for growth emerge from. Her current will calm down again, but while the experience of losing one’s mum is almost universal, the ‘after’ looks different to all of us, especially regarding how long it takes for us to find some solid ground again and get used to our changed family dynamics. Things will never return to exactly the same, but that will only feel like a loss if we don’t take the time to observe ourselves on this journey and what this journey is giving us, what it’s offering to us. Charlotte needs to slow down and observe as she’s riding these choppy waves.

Because I enjoy me some concrete advice, I asked your Record Keepers how you can do that, the slowing down and observing. Aside from the above — thinking through the metaphorical life jacket and zodiac boat — they want you to turn inwards and journal about what this loss is doing to you. To you, to the role(s) you have within your family (and beyond, if it feels right to explore this in regarding to your friends as well), to your creative self, and all the other roles you’re playing this lifetime.

These are the questions they want you to focus on specifically for each of the above:

• What’s been changing here? What has already changed and what is still in the process of being changed?

• What about this needs to be mourned properly for you to accept these changes and the effects they’re having on your life?

• What needs more time to fully settle?

• Where is the beauty in all of this?

Because this last question can be tough to even consider when grieving, your Record Keepers wanted me to add: There’s always beauty to be found no matter how terrible the wreckage, so what is that beauty for you? Allow for it to be entirely unexpected.

Feeling the reading was coming to an end, I asked your Record Keepers whether there was anything else they wanted to share with you today and this is what I received:

Give yourself grace. Give yourself time. And give yourself trust.

Dear Charlotte, I hope this helps you on your journey. Having walked this path (or rode those waves, to stick with the watery metaphor), I know this is a tough one, and I couldn’t agree more with your Record Keepers’ closing words. Please give yourself all the grace you need, all the time you need, and all the trust in yourself and your creative impulse you need.

Here’s your mantra for the week! This week’s card is from my Cards for Creative Courage oracle deck, which you can get it here or here. Founding members can get it for free with their subscription.

I’ve been thinking about mountains quite a bit recently. Not because the Netherlands has that many – we don’t, we have about one hill and that’s it – but because I’ve been working on a mountain-themed oracle deck with a good friend and fellow Akashic Records Master Practitioner.

Having grown up in what was once called part of the Low Countries, I know very little about actual mountains and how to scale them, but I do love using mountains in my metaphors, including this card from Cards for Creative Courage. In this card, or that’s how I intended the card when I made it, the mountain stands for any creative struggle or obstacle you might come across on your creative journey. Depending on the context in which the card is drawn, the mountain, or the climbing thereof, could also represent the creative journey itself, either as a whole or the particular creative journey one undergoes when working on a specific project.

What this card wants you to question is not whether you’re able to climb the mountain you’ve picked – it assumes you can in a very ‘You can do anything but not everything’ kind of way – but whether you’re climbing it for the right reasons. It’s been a question I’ve been obsessed with my entire life, because I understood quite early on that nothing is sustainable, in the broadest sense of the word, when it’s not done for the right reasons.

In other words, it’s not just a question of picking the right mountain – the right challenge or obstacle to overcome, the right project to undertake, the right purpose to follow – it’s about picking that mountain for the right reasons, motivated by the right intentions – the right reasons and intentions for you.

If you’re not motivated by the right (for you) reasons and intentions, it’ll be hard to scale any sort of hill or mountain, to keep going, all the way to the finishing line, in a way that’s sustainable and thus healthy. That’s what this card is checking in with, what it’s asking you contemplate:

Why are you doing this thing? Why have you committed to it? From what place inside of yourself did you decide: Yes, that’s the one I want to tackle! From which place did you respond to it when this particular mountain crossed your path? To what part of you did it speak? Your soul? Your heart? Or was it your inner child, your rebellious inner teenager, your inner wounded feminine or masculine, or some other part of you that still needs some more healing?

Why did you really decide to climb this mountain? Honestly?

If the nudge to scale this particular climb came right from your heart or straight from your soul, that’s wonderful. Keep doing the good work, please, and keep climbing!

If the underlying motivation to tackle your particular mountain came from another place, a place not as steeped in love, it’s time to take a pause. Not because the wrong motivation means you need to call it quits and leave this mountain pronto, but because you need to take a moment to check in with yourself and with your mountain. Committing to a specific mountain for the wrong reasons doesn’t necessarily mean the entire mountain wasn’t for you. There’s always a chance that the mountain itself is for you but that the intentions behind your desire to scale it need to be questioned.

So regroup. Ask yourself whether this work, this mountain, is really for you (right now and in this moment). If you get a solid ‘Yes’ from wherever your own deeper knowing is located in your body, you can ask yourself what intentions, what reasons for going on that climb, would serve you better, and what you can do to shift to these intentions, these reasons.

What intentions or reasons for engaging with this particular mountain would feel aligned with you, the true you, the one who is able to act from a place of soul, of love, instead of ego and fear? Are you able to change the why of your commitment to something else?

If it’s hard to get to the bottom of your reasons for wanting to climb that mountain, please know you don’t have to know exactly what your intentions behind making a commitment are. The only thing you do need to know is whether these intentions are coming from the right place, that place that speaks directly to your soul. If that’s the case, you’re good to go; you can trust that you’re doing this for the right reasons, and that those reasons might reveal themselves later, if need be.

Of course, if reflecting on these questions makes you realise the mountain wasn’t for you after all, you can simply leave it. You can turn around and start walking down the path and towards a mountain that is for you, that you want to scale for the right reasons, with the right intentions.

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to the second instalment of Creative Advice from the Akashic Field.

Before I share today’s letter and my responsde, I wanted to let you know I don’t have a question yet for the reading of 29 April, so if something’s been bothering you in your creative life, check out the instructions for sending in a letter at the very bottom of this post.

Today’s letter was sent to me by K. Here’s what they wrote:

Dear Mariëlle,

I am struggling with finding the joy of writing, especially now I am writing a book about grief. Writing about losing my mum is painful. I know this is a book I need to write, but how do I find joy in writing it?

K

And here’s my response:

Dear K,

Thank you for sharing this with me and for asking your question. Someone in my Writing with the Divine coaching programme is currently writing a book about grief, so I’m sure you can imagine I was incredibly curious to find out what your Akashic Records had to say about your question and struggle.

The moment I entered your Records, the atmosphere felt subdued, and the air felt heavy. I saw you walking through the forest, and your energy felt frantic, as if panic was building.

Suddenly, there was a clearing, and it was clear to me that you’d stumbled upon it by accident, that you weren’t expecting to find it. Light was pouring in through the canopy, and, as you stepped into the light, it was like you could remember how to breathe. There was a sense of awe, of ‘Holy hell, what is this feeling?’ The answer to that question was: ‘You’re touching the divine. This is what it feels like to touch the divine.’

I saw you looking up at the sky, head back, eyes closed, soaking up the sun, and then I received the word ‘light-deprived’, and the phrase: ‘They haven’t let the light touch them.’

There was such a release going on as you stood there, soaking up those rays of sun, that I was told to not ask your question yet. I needed to let the scene unfold first and hold space for the healing that needed to happen. Lots of light was pouring into the crown of your head and being released into the earth through your feet.

Eventually, you started growing until you were able to look over the tops of the trees, tall enough for the sun to always reach you. Your Record Keepers want you to remember that light can always be found, you just need to reach for it.

When I felt room to ask your question, I did: How can K find joy in writing a book about grief and losing their mum?

I immediately saw an onion, and the layers were being peeled off. At the heart of the onion was joy in its purest form, and connection — the joy of connection, of being connected, of having been connected. Next, I felt gratitude, and once I felt that, both the joy and gratitude felt almost overwhelming, much like how it felt to enter that clearing in the scene above.

Because it felt so similar, I asked about the two metaphors — the forest and the onion — and your Record Keepers acknowledged that the onion is the forest, and the heart of the onion is the clearing. You trying to find your way through the forest and looking intently at each layer as you unpeel the onion both feel like you’re searching for an entrance into your own story, a perspective, an angle. But at the very heart of it is pure connection, pure joy, and pure gratitude.

I asked your Record Keepers: How can K reach that clearing, that heart of the onion?

What I received was that there’s a fear that the grief, if you allow it fully, will drown you, that it will consume you, but the only way through grief is to actually go through it. You can’t bypass it. It’s not either grief and sorrow or pure unadultered joy and gratitude. It’s both and, like how the dark needs the light and the light needs the dark.

At this point, I asked: What needs to be healed, cleared, or cleansed for K to release the fear that their grief will be all-consuming? They told me that wasn’t the right question to ask, so I tried again: What can K do to release this fear? This time, I did receive an answer:

• Your Record Keepers want you to sit with your grief and meditate on why it feels the way it feels. What is it about this particular loss that makes you afraid of losing yourself? What is at the core of it, at the heart?

• They also want you to ask yourself whether you’re still allowed to experience joy (if you ever were). If not, they want you to ask yourself when this started, what caused it, and how your mum’s passing affected it.

• Last, they want you to check in with yourself whether you’re ready to let the grief you’ve been holding onto go. If not, why not? Why are you holding on to it, and what needs to happen for you to be ready to process and release it?

It’s at this point during the reading that I felt blocked energy around your heart chakra. There’s cosmic energy coming in through your crown and earth energy coming in through your feet, but neither can pass through your heart. I was told to tell you to work with pink calcite.

I was then expressly told to not send Reiki to your heart chakra, but I did receive the advice to place the threefold flame we work with in Magnified Healing in year heart, so I did.

Feeling the reading was coming to an end, I asked whether there was anything else you needed to know right now, and here’s what I received:

You’re not alone in this, and you don’t have to do this alone. There are people who will carry you through this if needed, and your guides are always there to support you in whichever way you need them. Do try to remember that.

I then closed your Records.

Welcome to Creative Advice from the Akashic Field, my brand-new ‘advice column’!

Our first letter was sent to me by E. Here’s what they wrote:

Hi!

I’m a writer, and a successful one. I’m obsessed with it and I always have been, from the time I was a little kid; I have no doubt it’s my life mission and that it spans more than one lifetime.

However, I struggle hard with imagination. I love to put words together, but often the story won’t come with them. I see my peers coming up with wildly imaginative tales, but my stories just … aren’t as imaginative. How can I get more in touch with my own imagination? I know it’s there.

E

And here’s my response:

Dear E,

Thank you so much for joining me on this adventure! I’m so excited for this, and I’m just so grateful you’ve decided to trust me with your question.

Here’s what came up when I went into your Akashic Records:

As soon as I opened your Records, I found myself surrounded by trees. Massive trees. I hadn’t even asked your question yet and your Record Keepers were already nudging me to please realise that these trees were really tall and I was on the floor. That was very important to them, that I realised I was on the forest floor, and that it meant that I wasn’t able to see the bigger picture — the full picture — from where I was. It wasn’t a dense forest, so I was able to look around myself quite far, but, while I could look up and see how tall the trees were, they kept reminding me I wouldn’t be able to see their actual canopy from where I was standing.

I then heard the words: ‘They’re afraid to fly.’

When we go into the Akashic Records, they know what answers we’re coming for, so I wasn’t too surprised they started giving me images and words before I was able to ask your question. Once the visual of the forest had settled and was clear to me, I did ask your question because I wanted to make sure that what they were showing me was, in fact, related to the question you sent me and wasn’t part of another message they had for you.

Once I let them know that your question was ‘How can I get more in touch with my own imagination?’, the image shifted. A giant tree, thicker than a sequoia but about as tall, appeared right at the centre of the forest and there were steps around the entire trunk. It was a proper staircase, with a railing and everything. You were at the base of this staircase, with one hand on the railing, and it felt like you were pondering something. You weren’t focused on the tree; you were looking all around yourself, at the surrounding trees and shrubs.

When I asked what it was you were pondering, your Record Keepers told me you were waiting to see whether a solution was going to pop out from behind a tree or appear from underneath a shrub, a solution that meant you wouldn’t have to start climbing that staircase.

It’s then that I started feeling dread. The idea that nothing was going to come save you from having to scale that tree brought a tightness to your chest and constricted your throat.

I asked the Record Keepers what we needed to know about this heaviness and constriction, where these physical feelings were coming from, and I got this horrible sensation of being high up somewhere and being pushed off by someone, to my demise. The scene that unfolded was of you on a steady climb towards the height of your creative genius. At one point, you stopped to admire the view, to appreciate how far you’d come already, and then someone appeared behind you and pushed you.

When I asked what we needed to know about this moment, your Record Keepers told me you didn’t see it coming. That past-life version of you still doesn’t know who did it, and now they don’t know how to trust others with their success. What if they climb up there again only to plummet to their death again?

At this point, it took me a moment to find the right next question. I tried a few and kept being told it wasn’t the question I needed to be asking. I only received a proper answer when I asked how this fear has served you between that and this current lifetime. What they gave me was that it stopped you from standing out too much and making yourself into a target.

I then asked how this fear has limited you since then, and what I got was that you became afraid to let your imagination soar free, high over the tree tops where it can get the full picture. Your imagination showed up to me as a giant bird stuck in a cage that’s barely big enough for it. It can hop around but it can’t spread its wings and fly. The reason they want you to climb that tree is because it will bring you in close contact with your imagination, once you’ve set it free. So what needs to happen is for you to climb that staircase, open that cage, and let it out.

I asked your Record Keepers how to make that happen, what needed to be healed, cleared, or released for you to be able to climb the tree and set your imagination — and yourself — free. I immediately found myself back on the forest floor, where you were sitting down, making yourself smaller, and were white-knuckling the key to the cage. They then gave me a few things for you try.

• Meditate on the fear. Even though it isn’t your fear — or not your current incarnation’s fear — you’re still carrying it. It needs to be felt, it needs to be acknowledged, so it can leave your nervous system.

• Have a conversation with your imagination as if it’s outside of yourself. Visualise you and your imagination sitting somewhere and ask it what it needs from you. Don’t ask that question just once; keep asking until your imagination is done sharing all its needs and desires.

• Healing was needed around your feet because there were too many cords keeping you grounded. With your soul’s permission, I started the healing process by placing my hands on your feet and asking for any ties, cords, chains, ropes, etc. that were keeping you from climbing that tree to be released, removed, or destroyed. At the end, your right foot was cleared but there were still some cords attached to your left foot. I asked your Record Keepers what to do about these, and they told me that you doing the homework they’ve given you — meditating on the fear and having a conversation with your imagination — will help release these cords. If you still struggle to climb that metaphorical tree in a month, they suggested seeking out an energy healer (like a Reiki practitioner) to help release the remainders (and to keep the cords from reattaching themselves).

Feeling the reading was coming to an end, I asked whether there was anything else they wanted to share with you today, and here’s what they suggested:

Even though the fear is not yours, or not of this lifetime, it might still rear its head as you’re healing from its effects. Write an empowering mantra for yourself that helps you focus on why you’re setting yourself and your imagination free.

I didn’t get around to recording the meditation I wrote for Monday’s post, but I did receive a nudge while I was in the Akashic Records yesterday to dust off the first copy of my unfinished Seven Simple Spreads series and share that with you.

So here it is!

Seven Simple Spreads is a series I started during the COVID-19 pandemic (I initially wrote ‘panic’! Perfect Freudian typo), during which I was incredibly prolific (hi, lockdowns!) until I wasn’t anymore (hi, effects of long-term global upheaval!). I published up until book 4, which I didn’t love at all and will, at some point, completely overhaul, and I haven’t touched the series much since.

I do intend to finish it one day, but it’s so not on my radar that it might be years until I give it another go. Of course, now I’ve been nudged to share the first book with you as this week’s freebie, I’m curious to learn why that is. Maybe the time to start working on it is nearer than I’m expecting it to be?

Speaking of the Akashic Records, are you following my upcoming Kickstarter campaign for my next two books yet?

I love this mantra – I am exactly where I need to be right now. When everything is going splendidly, that is.

When everything feels hard or up in the air or just plain unclear, I love it much less. A lot less. Funny how that goes, right?

Obviously, that’s exactly when mantras like these are needed, when the going gets a little tough. That reminder that we, even if it looks like the exact opposite, are, in fact, still moving in the right direction.

Why do we need that reminder? That little confirmation? Because we don’t trust, and the less we trust – in ourselves, in the Universe having our backs – the sharper we’ll feel the discomfort of not yet being where we want to be, of not knowing exactly where that place is, of not seeing clearly how to get from where we are to that place we’re hoping to arrive at, eventually. It’s the discomfort of not trusting that we can solve the challenges that’ll come our way or the obstacles that’ll show up on our path.

Discomfort is, as the name implies, an uncomfortable thing to experience. This is why we tend to avoid it when we can. Sometimes literally, by avoiding whoever or whatever it is that makes us uncomfortable, and sometimes we avoid it by keeping ourselves busy and stuck in hour heads. Because, if we refuse to stand still, take a deep breath, and centre ourselves, we won’t have to feel that discomfort.

Or, rather, we won’t have to feel it fully. It won’t go away, and it will keep nagging us until we finally acknowledge it and try to deal with it, but there’s a lot of running from it we can do before it catches up with it.

So what if we don’t? What if we stop running for a moment and feel the discomfort? Not to wallow in it but to understand where it’s coming from, what is at the root of it. So we can heal it, embrace it, make our peace with it, whatever is needed so we can come back to centre and to trusting that, yes, where we are right now is exactly where we need to be.

If you’re a runner – welcome to the club! – the meditation below will help you stop in your tracks and tune into the discomfort so you can hear what it has to tell you right now, in this moment.

This guided meditation is for those of us who struggle to stay present and get easily frustrated that they’re not yet where they wish to be (it’s me, hi!). This visualisation will help you slow down so you can sit with your own discomfort and learn what’s at the root of it.

Find yourself a comfortable position, whatever that looks like for you. You can close your eyes if you’re comfortable doing so. If not, try to relax your gaze.

Before you begin with the visualisation, I recommend the following breathing exercise to help soothe your nervous system. For this exercise, you inhale for three or four counts and exhale for double the counts. If you’ve inhaled for three counts, you’ll exhale for six. If you’ve inhaled for four, you’ll exhale for eight. Once you feel more centred and grounded, you can allow your breath to return to its natural rhythm.

Now imagine yourself walking along a river. The weather is just right for you, just perfect, and you inhale deeply to soak it up. You keep following the river, taking in your surroundings as you go. What do you see? What do you hear? What do you smell? What do you sense?

Not too far in the distance, you notice a wooden bench looking out over the river. You head that way and sit down on the weathered slats.

As you look down into the river, you realise the river is mirroring your life back to you, the life you’re living right now.

Take some time noticing what’s good about where you are right now in your life. What makes you happy? What brings you joy? What makes you grateful?

How would you describe what you’re feeling as you look at these parts of your life? Do you feel like this often or has it been a while?

Just take note.

Now focus on what doesn’t feel as great about where you are right now. Whatever feelings come up as you do this, don’t push them away. Allow them to surface. Just look at the water and whatever it’s mirroring back to you.

How uncomfortable are these feelings that are coming up? If you had to rate them from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most uncomfortable you can imagine yourself being, where do they land?

How does your body respond to these feelings? Take a moment to observe any physical reactions you might be having. And your emotions? How do they respond to these feelings? And your mind?

Try to stay with the discomfort. You’re safe here, and this discomfort is a feeling that, like all other feelings, will eventually pass.

Return your focus back to the river, and ask the river to show you what’s underneath the discomfort. What emotions or feelings are right beneath the surface of your discomfort?

Whatever you’re being shown, sit with it for a moment.

Now return to the river and ask it to show you what’s right beneath these emotions or feelings. What’s hidden beneath the surface of the emotions or feelings that just came up for you?

Again, sit with what you’re being shown for a moment. Let it sink in.

Bring your focus back to the river again, and ask it to show you what’s right beneath what just came up for you. What’s underneath that particular layer you’ve just uncovered?

Sit with that for a moment again.

Keep returning to the river, and keep asking it to show you what’s beneath the surface of the next thing that’s revealed. Dig as deep as you must, until what’s really hiding beneath the surface, beneath all those layers, is crystal clear to you.

Once it is, once you have no single doubt that this is the true cause of your discomfort about where you are right now, ask the river to show you how you can heal this, release this, clear this, embrace this, or make peace with this.

Allow the river enough time to show you how. If anything’s unclear about what it’s showing you, ask the river to clarify or elaborate.

When you’re ready, place one hand over your heart and one hand on your lower belly. Thank the river for showing you what it has today, and thank yourself for sitting with your discomfort and giving it space to be heard.

When you’re ready, take a deep breath in, and slowly exhale as you come back to yourself. If you had your eyes closed, open them now and take your journal to write down what you’ve just experienced and the answers that came to you during this visualisation.

Creative advice from the Akashic field

This guided visualisation is for those creatives who are finishing up a project. The journey will help you determine whether your project is ready to be released into the world and invites you to set the intention to surrender the outcome of your project to the divine.

These past few weeks, the question of control, and what we can and cannot control, has come up in different ways. None of these instances were related directly to my creative practice, but I dealt with each single one of them by reminding myself of something I’ve actually learned through my creative practice.

And that is that you can’t control how others respond to what you put out there, be that a book you’ve written, a decision you’ve made, an argument you needed to start, whatever it is.

That is not the say that everything you put out there doesn’t come with responsibility. If you write a problematic book – one that is, for example, severely underresearched or factually wrong – you can try to hide behind being unable to control how your work is received, but that won’t take away the fact that you didn’t do the work, at least not properly.

The same goes for creating something that’s blatantly racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or icky for whatever other reason. Obviously, I’m not a fan of the phrase ‘You were asking for it’, but if you write, paint, knit, or sing something like that and think it’s OK to share that with a broader audience, you are asking to be criticised.

So no, you can’t control how others respond to the work you’ve made, but you can control what you put out there and the effort you put into it, the questions you ask yourself during the process, and the decisions you make along the way.

In the same vein, you can’t control how many copies of something you’ll be selling, or how much people will be willing to pay for one of your creations. Whether this book will get you one some best sellers list, or whether this documentary will get you that award you’ve been craving.

These are all things that must be surrendered. If you enjoy your sanity, that is. If not, be my guest and obsess over all these things and more. Go wild.

If you do enjoy your sanity, stay focused on all those things you can control. The quality of your creations, their integrity, the amount of heart and work you put into them. All of that. And try to let the rest go. Surrender that to who- or whatever you surrender these things too, so you can focus on the work, and the work only.

How easy or hard is it for you to surrender the outcome of your creative work and stay with the work itself? And when you do begin to obsess over what’s beyond your control, is it easy to reign yourself back in and remember there’s no point in doing so?

For those who find this hard, the guided meditation below should make it easier for you.

This guided meditation is for those creatives who are finishing up a project. The journey will help you determine whether your project is ready to be released into the world and invites you to set the intention to surrender the outcome of your project to the divine.

Make sure you’re in a comfortable position, whether that’s seated or lying down. You can also do this meditation walking. If you like, and if you can, you can close your eyes. If not, try to relax your gaze.

Focus on your breath. For a couple of rounds, breathe in deeply through your nose, hold your breath at the top, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Once you feel more settled and grounded, breathe in and out through your nose in a rhythm that’s comfortable for you right now.

If there is any tension in your body, bring your attention and your breath towards it. On the inbreath, imagine how your breath embraces the tension. On the outbreath, allow this tension to lessen. Repeat this for as long as you need.

Place your hands on your belly, right below your navel, and imagine a bright orange light at the centre of your belly, about the size of a pin prick. With every inhale, that vibrant orange light grows a little bigger. With every exhale, it pulses slightly. The next time you inhale, it’s the size of a marble, then that of a golf ball.

Slowly, this growing light begins to resemble a sphere that expands beyond your belly and your back. It has reached your sides and has already enveloped your root and solar plexus chakra. With every breath in, this orange ball of light keeps growing. With every breath out, it pulses. Allow the orange light to reach every single cell as it expands beyond your physical body, until it has created a sphere of perfect pulsing orange light all around you.

This pulsing orange light surrounding you is your sacral energy, your creative energy. As you continue breathing in and out through your nose, the outer edges of the sphere begin to solidify. The energy still pulses, but those outer edges are turning into a smooth crystal, creating a solid barrier between you and the world around you. Inside this sphere, you are all there is. You and your creative impulse. There is nothing else. It’s just you and your creativity.

How are you feeling right now? Are you comfortable within this sphere? How does it make you feel? How does your body respond to it?

Whatever comes up, breathe in the sacral energy surrounding you and breathe out any feelings, emotions, sensations that do not serve you in this moment. Breathe in the orange energy, and breathe out anything and everything that doesn’t belong to you. Let all of it be absorbed by the orange light you’ve enveloped yourself in, and let it be transmuted into something – feelings, emotions, sensations, thoughts, energy – that will benefit you in this moment.

With your hands still on your belly, you ask the creative project you’ve been finishing up to join you in this sphere. It can come from within you, or you might have to create a temporary opening in the smooth orange crystal sphere that’s surrounding you to let it in. It doesn’t matter.

Once it’s in the sphere with you, place it in front of you. Take a good look at it. What does it look like? What colour does it have? What shape? What kind energy does it emit? How does it respond to your presence?

Now ask it:

How far along are you?

You don’t have to judge or feel anything about what shows up. You only have to sit with it. If you want, you can pause here and write down the answer you’re receiving.

Now ask your project:

Is there anything I’ve missed? Anything I haven’t thought about enough?

Again, don’t judge what comes up. That’s not what you’re here for, and that’s not what your project joined you in this sphere for.

Then ask your project:

Is there anything I could’ve done better? Or anything I could’ve done differently?

Lower your defences and allow the answer to come to you, no matter what it is.

Now ask your project:

Is there anything I need to clarify or elaborate on before I release you into the world?

Once you’ve received all the answers your project has given you, ask your project whether there’s anything else you need to know right now. Does it have any messages it wants you to hear?

If yes, take a moment to write them down. If not, that’s OK. Maybe everything your creative project needed to share with you today has already been said.

Place your hands on your belly again. Keep inhaling that orange sacral energy as you ask yourself whether you’re ready to fully surrender the outcome of this creative project.

If you are, imagine placing the finished version of your project inside an orange balloon. When you’re ready, release the balloon, allowing it to go through the crystal sphere still surrounding you, up towards the cosmos. You have now surrendered the outcome of your project to the divine, and are now ready to call your creative energy back and focus it on the things you can control.

On your next inhale, smile to yourself. You have done something truly remarkable. On your next exhale, the outer edges of the sphere around you begin to soften. On every exhale, the smooth crystal surrounding the sphere softens more. Now decide for yourself: Do you want to draw your sacral energy closer to your belly or do you want to keep the circle of energy you’ve created around yourself? Perhaps you want to make it even bigger?

Once your sphere of orange light is your preferred size, wiggle your toes and fingers, then stretch your arms and legs. Slowly, open your eyes and take in the room you’re in. If you haven’t started writing down what came up for you during this visualisation, this is a good time to grab your journal and do so.

For some, understanding why something’s crossing our path is vital to our processing. For others, that question becomes irrelevant as soon as they’ve figured out which path to take. The last question is for that first group of people. If you don’t need or care for the answer, don’t feel like you have to draw that fifth card.

My Kickstarter campaign for the special edition of Get Out of Your Own Way is up and running!

If you haven’t checked it out yet, you can do so here. We’re slowly moving towards the first stretch goal, and I’m hoping we’ll reach that before too long.

When I first learned about potential future timelines, I’d been working with the Akashic Records for years already. It isn’t that I was unaware of the notion that time doesn’t exist within the Records, meaning things like the past, the present, and the future hold very little meaning within that space, but I had never been able to fully grasp just how that worked in practice.

The furthest I had gotten to wrapping my head around it was: when we work through the past – which had been my sole focus when working with the Records up until then – we can heal our incarnated present, and that will then affect our incarnated future.

I wasn’t wrong, but that is definitely not the full extent of it.

Within the Akashic Records, we can visit potential future timelines the way we can visit our different pasts – the past of our current lifetime and all our previous lifetimes. We can communicate with future versions of ourselves and ask them how they dealt with a certain situation, how certain choices we’re about to make worked out for them, what we’ll be working on in the future, what we’re supposed to create with this or that person, and so on.

You can even use the Records to channel your creative work by visiting with a future version of yourself who’s already written the book you’re trying to write right now, or the painting that’s been on your mind, or the oracle deck you’re building.

I’m sure you can imagine how excited I was to learn about this possibility, and it didn’t take me long to start experimenting with this newly acquired knowledge.

And neither did it take long for me to get something incredibly wrong about future timelines…

When I first started working with the Akashic Records on a day-to-day basis, when I first opened myself up fully to the knowledge, wisdom, and advice this field had for me, the life I’m living, and the business I was trying to build, I gradually went from thinking ‘I don’t think I can do this’ when an idea landed in my head to ‘if the Records share this idea with me, I must be able to do make it work, because they’re only interested in seeing me succeed’.

That shift in thinking has done wonders for my courage, and my confidence, and it’s been immensely helpful in soothing those worried little voices that used to run the show whenever I embarked on a new project.

But… I made the rookie mistake to apply that ‘I must be able to make it work’ to my experiments with future timelines. As in, each time I was shown a future timeline, I told myself: ‘Well, if the Records see me doing this in the future, I guess I should commit to it.’ No matter how I actually felt about what I was being shown.

I assumed that, just because I was able to see myself doing a thing in the future, or see myself work on something with someone in the future, that I was supposed to do it. Even if I wasn’t really feeling it.

Guess what? That’s not how future timelines work. There’s a reason we call them potential future timelines, and there’s a reason we speak of them in the plural. The future isn’t set in stone and, depending on the choices we make, different potential future timelines come and go. And some of those will feel more aligned than others.

I don’t necessarily think those future projects and collaborations I saw that made me feel ‘I guess I should commit to this, even though I’m not really feeling it’ would have been detrimental to me or my business. I don’t think they were bad future timelines. They all sounded interesting enough for me to at least feel a maybe, but they just didn’t make me come alive. There was no spark, no full body ‘YES!’, no ‘I can’t wait to dig my fingers into this’.

And that’s the sign for me, I understand that now. That’s the lesson I needed to learn here, that being able to see myself doing something in the future is not what makes something aligned with me or not. That just makes it an option, and there are many of those.

It’s only when my brain starts firing on all cylinders, when my body is literally leaning in instead of leaning back, when I feel that ‘Hell yes, this is for me’ all the way down to my toes, that something is actually aligned with me. Those are the boxes that need to be checked now before I commit myself.

When the Records show me something now, I still understand that to mean I could make it work. But I now get that I have to add ‘if I want to’ behind those words. If I don’t want to, I don’t have to entertain that particular future timeline. I can let it go and wait for something that’s actually aligned to come along.

Writing with the Divine: The coaching programme for writers where the spiritual meets the practical

Here’s your mantra for the week! This week’s card is from my The Sovereign Success Oracle deck. You can get it here or here. Founding members can get it for free with their subscription.

This card, this mantra – I am filled with patience and confidence – is a lie. I’m not filled with patience and confidence, not at all.

It’s not that I don’t have any, or that it hasn’t been growing over the past couple of years, but there are definitely not my go-to feelings. In fact, I actively have to invoke them when my brain gets stuck on the past or future, which happens a fair bit.

I do have more patience than I have confidence, which is a start, and it’s why I’m always looking – begging – for signs that I’m on the right track, that I’m exactly where I need to be right now, that things are indeed happening for me even if I’m a long way from where I want to be.

And I get signs like these – quite a few, she’s embarrassed to admit – but then I always want another one, and another one, because I don’t have enough confidence that they’re saying what I’m hoping they’re saying.

That I am able to stay on the path the sign is telling me I’m on. That I am able to read signs like these correctly. That I am not fooling myself into believing everything will be OK by searching for signs that aren’t actually there.

I wasn’t raised to believe everything will be OK. I was raised the exact opposite, in fact, to believe that everything would be a struggle. That it wasn’t worth it if it wasn’t a struggle. That what you’ve gained can easily be lost. That there’s no guarantee things will ever look up. That no one but you is looking out for you.

These beliefs are so ingrained in me that I didn’t even think to release them last Friday, when I was part of a releasing ceremony for the new year with a bunch of amazing women. We all wrote down the beliefs, behaviours, patterns, and so on we didn’t want to carry into 2026 and then threw it all into the fire that was burning in my back garden.

In fact, I’m now wondering whether these beliefs have been so ingrained in me that they’re only now coming to the surface as ingrained beliefs. It’s not as if I didn’t know they were there, but I’ve never been able to sit with them the way I’m doing right now, as if releasing a bunch of other beliefs that were no longer serving me (or never truly did) created space for these to come to the surface to be looked at properly.

Well, I have to tell you. I don’t like what I’m seeing, so I guess I have some more burning to do. Perhaps not in my back garden, which is currently covered in inches of snow, but I know from experience that any fireproof dish will do the trick.

And once I’ve burned these beliefs, I’ll set the intention to cultivate both patience and confidence. I know I’m carrying the seeds, but I’d love for both to come to full bloom this year.

I am patient.

I am confident.

I am patient.
