I Got Drunk With Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain was many things to many people. He was an author, a writer, a world traveler, a line cook, a chef, a philosopher, a producer, a television personality, a novelist, a journalist, an essayist, a connoisseur, a bad boy, and a man of the people. He famously believed that traveling outside of your country and comfort zone created personal growth. His philosophy was simple; eating a meal with locals and having a conversation across the dinner table was the antidote to racism. I tend to believe him.

Bourdain was radically curious and kept an open mind. He didn’t make plans when traveling because plans tie you down. I live by that rule as much as I can. He said, “If you’re traveling, the first thing you should do is get as far away from the hotel restaurant as you can.” Anthony was spontaneous and free. He insisted that by sitting down over a shared meal, people could not only overcome their differences, but they could also find common ground and realize we are all more alike than we think.
