It doesn't involve tech or new treatment potocols - the main distinction in Matt's approach is an acknowledgement of the potential impact of a client's mental and wellbeing state, on their running performance and recovery from injury. With this in mind, Matt and I discuss the benefits of this approach to you, as well as your clients. Allowing yourself to take longer to get to the route of the problem, to do less in a session, and to accept that you may be just a part of this person's recovery. We also talked about the magic of collaborating with colleagues so that together you can navigate these new ways of working and of talking about how you work.

Contacts for Matt

Across social media @runchatlive

On Spotify:

Link for Coaching Unpeeled https://buytickets.at/mehab/1520869

Clinical Researcher: Why Would You? She’s been setting things up to prepare herself and her team for the change, putting people in key positions to take over essential tasks whilst she’s away.

Thanks for reading Mehab! Things that just need fixing! We’ve done enough coaching work together for her to recognise that there’s a tug of war going on, between the old self who identifies strongly with being needed, and the new self who is happy to let others take the load for a while. At the moment, the old self is winning.

The new version of Sarah isn’t yet clearly defined. There are vague thoughts of someone more laid back, someone comfortable with doing less, spending more time with family and on new adventures. But in comparison, she knows the old hard-working Sarah like the back of her hand. The responsible one, respected, needed by others, busy, tired and frustrated, it’s like the difference between a best friend and the intriguing but distant new kid at school.

When we’ve made the decision to move on, we desperately want to embody the new way of being which is emerging, but we haven’t set ourselves free to embrace that new relationship with ourselves.

Lisa Wynn, Legacy Creation Coach suggests,

“Sometimes we can’t change because we can’t accept what has gone before. We need to be able to look back at old behaviours dispassionately”.

This older version of ourselves was exactly what we needed to be at one time in order to create what we desired then, but things change. You may have heard the phrase, what got you here won’t get you there. If you are approaching some kind of transition, a new role or a big life change, you probably have a sense of how that might look but have you asked who you might need to be in order to step into that place?

Who might you be if you were still yourself, but no longer that old self who served you well but has had their time? What could you be doing differently? How would people see you and how would you feel?

In healthcare we are used to the idea of working harder and pushing ourselves to achieve change, we may not even value the process unless it feels hard. But there is another way. It takes self-compassion to accept and lovingly say goodbye to the person who went before, and courage to see yourself differently. This is integrity, not always the easiest path, but one that leads to great places.

Send me a DM or an email if you’d like to chat about this some more.

Thanks for reading Mehab! Having described the struggles and the suffering as she puts it, in epsiode 1, this time Karli focuses on the solutions she has found and the evolution this has afforded her both as a person and a physiotherapist. We also discuss how, as employers and heads of organisations where people with neurodiversity are working (ie all of us) we can help make those environments easier places to navigate for all. Many of us are probably scared of getting things wrong, or not sure how to get it right. Karli's overriding message is to stay curious.

Session 32 My life as a Neuro-Spicy Physiotherapist with Karli Gibson

This is the first of a 2-part series.

Jo Turner

This is the first of a 2-part series.

Episode 1 - The Struggle and The Suffering

Episode 2 - The Revolution and The Evolution

Karli Gibson is an Occupational Health Physiotherapist.

In this first epsiode, Karli talks to me about…

Feeling thick, but smart.

Learning to cope, and learning to mask.

Getting diagnosed with dyslexia and discovering resources.

Getting diagnosed with ADHD, and finding support, but not so many resources…yet.

You can’t fail to hear Karli’s determination and commitment to finding her own path, not just in Physiotherapy but also in life.
