Been a while since I’ve had any time to do a regular update on my various projects. I’ve been plugging away at drawing Minor Arcana and trying to get ahead on scripts, but I thought I would try and catch you up on all the latest…

ABSOLUTE FLASH

Issue 14 of Absolute Flash hit stores last week and featured Wally and Linda’s adventures in the “Mirror Dimension”. This one featured a fun “upside down” sequence that pulled from a few tricks I learned on my 2013 Vertigo series, Trillium. This issue also teased the Absolute version of S.T.A.R.Labs as well as the characters of Ray Palmer and Silas Stone (can Absolute Vic Stone/Cyborg be far behind?!)

Issue 15, drawn by series regular Nick Robles, will, in fact, be the first appearance of the Absolute ATOM (cover above!) This is sort of a full circle moment for me, as my very first DC writing job was The Atom as a back-up feature in Adventure Comics back in 2009.

Issues 16-17 will be titled “Gorilla City” where we’ll catch up with Grodd and The Rogues, and then #18-19 gives us Absolute Hunter Zolomon and the first appearance of another surprise Absolute incarnation of an old Flash villain. (Nick’s cover below…)

CROWBOUND

My next ongoing Image series with Dustin Nguyen will launch in September! We are going to have lots of Crowbound news very soon, but I can reveal that Dustin and I will be signing a very limited preview Ashcan of Crowbound #1 at San Diego Comicon this July.

BLACK HAMMER

I can’t say too much yet, but, in addition to the Crowbound Ashcan, there will also be a huge announcement about the next phase of Black Hammer comics this July at San Diego Comicon.

2026 marks the 10th anniversary of Black Hammer and we’ll be celebrating in style with a major new BH series written by me and drawn by an artist who I have admired for a long time.

This mystery artist and I will be on hand at SDCC to announce the series, and sign an exclusive new print. More details as we get closer to July.

Excited to announce that The Fury of Firestorm #1 has SOLD OUT and has gone back for a second printing! AND I can also announce that the series has been expanded from it’s original 6-issue format to 9-issues! I’m really happy that the book seems to have struck a chord with retailers and readers. To celebrate I thought I would share the process behind a new Firestorm cover which was pencilled by the legendary Denys Cowan and inked by me!

Denys Cowan has long been one of my favorite artists. In the 80’s and 90’s he brought a unique edge to the mainstream, especially with his work on the classic run of THE QUESTION with writer Dennis O’Neil. Denys always seemed to be pushing the boundaries of what mainstream comic art could look like with his expressive line work and sense of design. I was lucky enough to work with Denys a few years ago on our 4-issue DC Black Label series, The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage.

When starting work on this new Firestorm series, the first thing I did was go back and look at all of the Firestorm series from the past. And, when pulling out my back issues, I was immediately struck by this cover that Denys did with Klaus Janson for Firestorm #50 in 1986. In fact, this cover sort of became the tonal touch point for my whole story.

So when my editor, Andrew Marino, and I were discussing potential variant cover artists I requested that Denys do one for the new series. A month or so later, Denys emailed me asking if I had any requests for the new cover and I mentioned his #50 cover from ‘86 as a jumping of point, but I also worked up the nerve to ask Denys if he would be open to me inking his pencils for this cover. When he said yes, it was a fanboy dream come true. I was going to ink one of my heroes!

A couple weeks ago, Denys sent over these incredible pencils…

I was beyond excited to get started inking the cover, but also, intimidated. I didn’t want to ruin Denys’ incredible work. But, the key to inking well is attacking with confidence, and, I also knew I’d be printing Denys’ pencils off as blue line art, so if I really messed up I could start over.

I mostly used a steel nib pen for the line work and a brush for the blacks..

As always, I started by inking the face and head, and was feeling good about how that turned out, which helped me relax into the rest of the cover…

And, a few hours later, I finished the inks and sent them to Denys for his blessing.

The cover was then colored by Francesco Segala who gave it a cool retro dot-pattern look…

This cover will be a variant for #4 out in July! And if you missed #1 a 2nd printing is coming soon.

I have signed a 5-book deal with Harper Collins’ Harper Alley imprint as part of their inaugural line of original graphic novels for adults! The first 3 books of the this new deal will be the supernatural detective series, MR. OBLIVION with artist Teddy Kristiansen.

Mr. Oblivion follows Marty McCabe, who was once the world’s greatest occult detective, Mr. Oblivion, but now, twenty-years later, sells real estate in the suburbs and struggles with middle-age, marriage, and a teenaged daughter. But, when the demons of his past return (literally), Marty must once again put on the fabled Merlin Mask to save his family, even if it eats his soul alive.

Mr. Oblivion will be three 200+ page original graphic novels written by myself and illustrated by Teddy Kristiansen. The first volume, Incantations, will be published Summer 2027.

The other two books in my Harper deal will each be stand-alone graphic novels, one will be illustrated by Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead) and the fifth book will be…well, let’s keep that one a surprise for later :)

Sorry for the lack of updates the last couple of months. Winter has hit hard and I have been even busier than usual, writing and drawing Minor Arcana, writing Absolute Flash, Firestorm, and JSA for DC, writing Crowbound for Dustin Nguyen, and Image, and working on a new screenplay adaptation of one of my past books. Phew.

But I wanted to find some time to drop a few updates…

CROWBOUND!

My new creator-owned series with Dustin Nguyen, CROWBOUND, has been pushed from our planned March launch to later this year. We want to give Dustin time to get far enough ahead on the art that we can stay monthly once we get going. But here is the very first look Dustin’s cover art for Issue #2…

ABSOLUTE FLASH

Issue #12 hits next week and its a big one. The culmination of our first year of stories. We just had our annual DC summit where the rest of the Absolute Universe team and I planned some very cool stuff for later this year. Nick Robles’ #12 cover…

Issue 13 and 14 will be drawn by the amazing Haining and will be our big Mirror Master story. After that we dive into the Absolute STARLabs, and its connection to Barry Allen and the Absolute Ray Palmer.

The series will launch in April and it’s been a real labour of love for the whole creative team. My editors Andrew Marino and Marquis Draper are two of the biggest Firestorm fans in the world and when I told them I also loved the character we knew we were going to swing for the fences with this one. The original Firestorm series told the story of Ronnie Raymond, a college student who was fused with his eccentric professor, Martin Stein, in a nuclear accident. Together they merged into the flame-headed hero, Firestorm. Our book will be both a deconstruction of the character and a love letter to his past.

If you’ve never read a Firestorm comic before, I’ve written the first issue as if it were the pilot episode of a new series, so it’s totally new reader friendly. And if you are an old school Firestorm fan (they exist, I swear!) the book is loaded with Easter eggs and nods to the past too.

It’s been a while since I updated my newsletter, I keep meaning to, but I’ve been so busy trying to get pages drawn and scripts written before the end of the year that I haven’t had a lot of time. I finally finished up a huge script this past week though, so I wanted to do one last post looking back at 2025 and ahead to what’s coming in 2026.

MINOR ARCANA

This past year was a real mix between getting new creator-owned projects ready to launch in ‘26, and continuing my books for DC Comics. And, of course, MINOR ARCANA continues to be my main focus. As of writing this I have three more pages left to draw in issue #15, and then I am on to the fourth arc, “THE LOVERS”, in January. I drew all of Arc 3 (Issues 11-15) myself, and for Arc 4, Letizia Cardonici will return to split art duties with me. The Lovers will tell a dual narrative. In one storyline, Theresa will reunite with her old love, Missy, and go on a metaphysical quest. This will be juxtaposed with flashbacks showing their teenaged years and the beginning of their relationship. I’ll be drawing the present day scenes while Letizia will draw the teenaged scenes. This will run through issue 20 of the book.

There are a lot of very exciting things happening behind-the-scenes with Minor Arcana right now. I wish I could say more, but I have been sworn to secrecy for now. But trust me when I say that 2026 will be a HUGE year for the book.

The artwork shown here is for the deluxe hardcovers of Minor Arcana. Originally I had planned for four hardcovers, but the shape of the series changed a lot as I got into it, so now it will eventually be collected in two hardcover volumes. No timeline yet on when these will be released, we are just working on the design now.

ABSOLUTE FLASH - YEAR 2!

The response to the entire DC Absolute line has been extraordinary, beyond what Scott, Jason, Al, Kelly, Deniz, and I ever could have hoped for. It’s so great to meet so many readers who are new to comics with the Absolutes being their gateway. For my part, I have really loved creating Absolute Flash with Nick Robles, and our first year of stories is almost at it’s climax. Issue #10 hit this past week, and many of the storylines I have been laying down since #1 are now all coming together. Issue 11-12 will feature a huge confrontation between Wally, The Rogues and Elenore Thawne. But then what?

Over the last month or so I have been deep into planning the next year of stories for Absolute Flash. Issue 12 will tie up many loose ends and finish up a lot of the current plot. But, it will also set Wally West on an entirely new path that will introduce a number of new elements, and characters, to his world and ti The Flash’s corner of the Absolute Universe. In my second year I really want to focus on building out the “Super Science” corner of the Absolute Universe. This will mean introducing the Absolute versions of some fan-favourite DC characters for the first time. I can’t spoil who just yet, but Nick and I will be creating the Absolute versions of two seminal DC heroes next year.

In addition to these new characters and concepts, Issues 13-14 will feature the first big Mirror Master story, following up on the storylines teased way back in the Free Comic Book Day story and Absolute Evil. These issues will be drawn by the very talented Haining, and then Nick will come back for Issue 15 where we first meet ABSOLUTE *****!!

DC NEXT LEVEL MYSTERY BOOK!

At New York Comicon DC announced a big March initiative called DC Next Level where a number of new series will launch. These new books will take DC characters who have not had their own series in a while, and present them with very creator-driven directions. We have been given an incredible amount of freedom to take these characters and push the limits of what readers thought they could be.

I’m writing one of these Next Level books, which will be drawn by Rafael DeLatorre. I just finished painting a variant cover for the first issue of my new series and I’ve been told it will be announced in the next couple of weeks. So, as soon as I can I will share a preview of the book here along with my cover.

I will say this, the book is definitely one of the wildest things I’ve done at DC. It’s really experimental, and reminds me a little bit of the fun I had writing Moon Knight at Marvel.

Dustin Nguyen is busy painting away on Issue #1 of our new creator-owned Image series, CROWBOUND. We originally announced the book would launch in March 2026, but we have decided to push the launch to May to make sure we have enough issues finished so we can stay in schedule once we get up and running. I’ve been working on inks for Issue #13 of Minor Arcana this week before heading out to Winnipeg for The Prairie Comics Festival this weekend. But I thought I’d share a few new bits and pieces…

First, here is NICK ROBLES incredible cover to ABSOLUTE FLASH #10!

I just finished writing scripts 11-12 for Absolute Flash in August, and now I’ve started planning and plotting for my second year on the title. Issue 12 will set Wally on a brand new trajectory, and set things up for him to explore even more of the Absolute Universe, bring in more new Absolute takes on old Flash concepts and characters, and maybe even introduce a new Absolute hero or two.

SECRET DC PROJECT!

Here is the very first sneak peek at some art from a top secret DC project coming in 2026. The book will be written by me, illustrated by Rafael De Latorre, and colored by my old Green Arrow collaborator Marcleo Maiolo. More soon! COMIC RECOMMENDATIONS

I have read some REALLY good comics in the past couple of weeks. First up is the Manga, TOKYO THESE DAYS by Taiyo Matsumoto, the creator of the amazing Tekkontinkreet.

The book follows a veteran Manga editor in Japan after he retires from the publisher he has been working at for 30 years. He sets out to create the greatest collection of manga he can by recruiting all his favorite cartoonists. The book becomes an incredible tapestry of characters and stories about both the creative life and also the poignant, seemingly mundane, small moments of life.

I can’t recommend these books enough. The subject matter obviously hits close to home for me, but I think this might be one of the best Manga I’ve ever read.

INCREDIBLE DOOM

I also read the first two volumes of Matthew Bogart’s wonderful INCREDIBLE DOOM series of graphic novels from Harper Alley Books.

Incredible Doom follows a group of young artists, punk rockers, and computer nerds sharing a suburban house in the 90’s. These are really great slice-of-life stories, with endearing characters. Please check them out. The books perfectly capture the feeling of growing up in the 90’s.

Bogart’s cartooning is great. Minimalistic, yet totally human and expressive. He works with writer Jesse Holden. You can check out Matthew’s work at https://www.matthewbogart.net/comics/

My first major storyline in JSA, Ragnarok, concludes with Issues 11-12 out in September and October. Here’s a first look at the stunning connected covers for those issues by Leonardo Romero.

I am a HUGE fan of Leonardo’s work and it’s amazing to see his covers each month.

After this we’ll jump back to 1940 for YEAR ONE (Issues 13-18) and then it will be THE SEARCH FOR THE SPECTRE (Issues 19-22) and then another lost tale from the past with THE SECRET SOCIETY (Issues 23-24).

Hope you are all having a great Summer. Just got back from indulging my 90’s nostalgia last night and seeing the first North American show of OASIS’ reunion tour in Toronto. Despite rain, and a pretty abysmal venue, the show was great. But now back to the studio where I’m half way through drawing Issue #13 of Minor Arcana.

Speaking of which, the next storyline, entitled THE MOON kicks off in November. This one will run from Issues 11-15, and be fully drawn by me. I’ll be expanding the world of Minor Arcana in this arc by further exploring the rural criminal underground of Limberlost and its ties to the mysterious CANOE.

Also coming this Fall will be the softcover collection of FISHFLIES and VOL. 3 of PHANTOM ROAD from Image.

NEW STUFF!

I wish I could talk more about all the new projects I am working on, but most won’t be officially announced for a while. A few might be announced at NYCC but that is still TBD. Here’s what I can tell you…

Dustin Nguyen and I have started our next big Image series. It will be a new ongoing book that will launch in March 2026.

Teddy Kristiansen and I are working on a huge new multi-year project. Cannot wait to share more about this one. Something very different for both of us in terms of format and publisher.

I am writing 2 new books for DC. One a character I have never written before and one is a return to a character that I did write in the past.

I’ve also started the next Black Hammer series with an artist whom I love and have wanted to work with for a long time.

Starting with Issue #13 of JSA we will be going back to the Golden Age for a major new storyline that reveals the untold formative adventure of the heroes who will become The Justice Society of America!

This 6-issue storyline will run through Issues 13-18 and feature artwork by Gavin Guidry (who drew the “Times Past” story in Issue 8). I’m very excited about this new storyline. It’s a real thrill to get to add to the Golden Age legacy of these amazing characters.

I’ll have more info and previews for JSA, and my other series, soon. For now, enjoy Dave Johnson’s cover for Issue 13!
