JAPAN ORDINARY -photos- does not aim for nostalgia or tourism. My goal is to document the mundane atmosphere of daily life as someone who actually lives in Japan.

Much of what is shared on social media as “Japan” focuses on its more “glamorous” aspects: historic temples, bustling intersections, the beauty of the four seasons, or futuristic cityscapes. However, the true essence of Japanese life largely exists beyond those frames.

SHIMIZU Akira: Japanese Photographer (Based in Aichi, Japan / Born in 1963)

I photograph places that are neither famous landmarks nor intentionally curated for beauty. These are the familiar spaces we often overlook—spots that are sometimes on the verge of disappearing. To me, it is these very places that quietly shape the reality of everyday life in Japan.

I photograph ordinary moments in Japan. Streets, light, silence, and small details of everyday life. Nothing special — and that is exactly what I want to share.
