The plan had all the makings of success. Dress like a swaggy ballplayer! That is SO ME! Maybe I was too cocksure? (pun intended) I outfit planned, I took the photos, I didn’t examine too closely, and I prepared to have a wonderful week.

Ever read the children’s book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible No Good Very Bad Day? The line, “Some days are like that. Even in Australia.”

Some days are like that. Even with outfit planning. My style is evolving a little, and I’m a little out of touch with my changing body (I get real about that here and here). It kind of hit me this week. But that’s ok. We all have those days. Here’s how to handle it.

… ok, the Takeaways this week:

1. When you leave the house in an outfit you end up hating, see if you can make an adjustment.

2. And failing that, when you get home, diagnose the issue and try it again. It may seem fruitless since you’re home already. But it’s a great way to learn. It’s how I have improved my own style.

3. Broken record but - you need the ish colors. I know, I know. Can I get through a post without saying Tibi? But I have to give credit; this concept is theirs. From Trinny I learned that a bright + black can be too jarring. And from Tibi that adding “ish” colors (blue ish gray, olive-ish green, burgundy ish brown) takes the aggressiveness out and adds sophistication. You need these tools. And they are probably the most useful in the form of a sweater or long sleeve shirt that can go around your waist.

4. Beware the same-same: The number one diagnosis I find is too much of the same. All oversized. Or all mannish. Or all cotton. Or all sporty. When you’re looking for a fix, change something. (tie something around the waist, open up the shirt, put on the sweater, etc.)

5. Until it’s wrong, it’s not right: Everything needs a little acid. A little fish sauce. Some funky. Sometimes that’s the diagnosis.

MONDAY

Diagnosis:

• ok these pants have gotten too big and because of the carrot shape, they don’t just ride lower, the proportion’s all off.

• speaking of proportions, the top of me looks all narrow and the heft is only around the hips, it feels unbalanced

• everything is big except the tee, but you can’t tell that is small under the big jacket

• there is no skin

• there is not enough ankle showing - I love this shoe and still have to figure out how to wear it

• everything I’m wearing is a) mannish and b) neutral — too much sameness

Re-do:

• Started with new pants (old Tibi) - these are big too, but intentionally so … the newer Tibi khaki is on sale. But here’s a great comp.

• No blazer, showing skin of arms

• More femme shoe for friction, also shows more skin

• Added some “off” colors (aka Tibi 3), reddish-brownish bracelet, belt,

• Neutrals are not matching: black shoe, burgundy belt, bag in slightly different shade

• Added an acidic bright to wake things up (ring 4)

TUESDAY

out to dinner (I was in workout clothes all morning + afternoon)

• Tibi track pants (you could do the Adidas version)

• Tibi long sleeve tee (Ref alt here)

• Marion Parke silver pumps (no longer available - Jimmy Choo version, Toteme size 8 is great - but this is the best

• past season Prada lace trimmed tank (Frame has a version. J. Crew’s is really cute though and much less!)

Lofted Settledness? Oh hell no.

Diagnosis:

• I stayed too close to the original inspo with the stark white and blue - needs nuance

• The silver adds to the problem, too matchy with the silver snaps

• I feel too contrived with the girlie-boobie top (which maybe I need to sell) and the track pant, I like friction but it feels forced

Re-do

• I swapped in a burgundy shoe - it’s more low key and less jarring next to the athletic pants

• I liked the idea of the 2 layers on top, but I wanted less girliness, so I put this tank on top - very old Tibi; this would work too), which is simpler and more geometric.

• I added an “ish” colored sweater (it’s my husband’s; mine has chocolate all over it). This is a lovely brand and in general they do a lot of these ish colors. The tees are great too + great father’s Day gifts here.

• And I wanted something jarring and weird so I used the red bag - it’s so good - can be tote or clutch and is actually in the extra 10 off sale on Net. I think it’s the best find.

WEDNESDAY

• Prada suiting shorts (old - newer version. more sizes.) nice alt + secondhand small + large

• Partial blazer piece is past season from Dover Street Market ( - a great same vibe 3rd piece, I’d wear undone as a layer)

• Vintage baseball tee — and here they do very cool remakes of vintage team logos, by team

• I don’t know why I decided to put a tank top under this shirt! It’s light, it’s great, it doesn’t need it.

• It’s too matchy with the black sandal and black shirt.

• It’s too stark with the red/white black

• the heel is making the jean too short

Re-do:

• removed the tank top

• used a textured shoe (as above) to make things less matchy with the shirt

• switched to a flat so the jeans hang better and are a better length

• added burgundy belt and olive bag (it’s old Bottega) - some “ish” color to make things a little more interesting

FRIDAY

• past season Miu Miu skirt (XS secondhand, same in denim … here’s a Tibi coming soon that I always love)

• very old Marni shirt (men’s, like this and this)

• Secondhand Hermes Bolide bag (this is my fave Bolide alt)

• Bracelet is old and a gift (alt yellow + this blue)

• Miu Miu loafers (Tory’s monk strap has the same extended toe)

Diagnosis:

• ok the skirt got looser, which made it drop lower; I don’t like the expanse of leg that’s showing now

• also for the same reason, it now feels big on big

• the 3 colors feel like they’re all playing at the same level

• the shirt is masc and so are the shoes and nothing is giving that enough friction

Re-do

• swapped a feminine shoe in a slightly off color (this is an old Tibi; here’s a nice alt)

• added the same ring 3 sweater in and tied it tightly at the waist to de-big and de-boxify the shirt while making the colors more interesting

• I think having the three brights and the neutral was almost not enough color - the orange shoe, yellow bracelet, the pink… I still wanted the red bag. It’s also “wrong” with the green.

• hair done and curly (I got a cut and dry) also adds femininity

SATURDAY

The world sucks, ofc. But this month, I was happy. Honestly, every day. Even the hard days had some joy. I feel proud, because I do believe happiness is a choice, and choosing it is an effort, and it’s an effort I keep making.

People can do things that are unfair and unkind and inaccurate and hurtful and honestly shocking. But instead of wasting my time countering these things, I can just do my own things: I can be kind and good and warm and real. I can be a cheerleader, I can give someone a lift, I can love, and I can be me.

I can let go of the anger, too. It is work to be angry. It doesn’t serve me. Less “OMG this is INSANE!” and more, “all right, now I know, it is what it is and that’s ok.” It’s not being fake, it’s releasing myself, and that is real.

I can also laugh. I finally, finally started seeing the humor. I finally, finally had to.

I’ve always loved an all white look. Sure you have to carry a stain stick at all time. But nothing beats the freshness. So when my friend did a post advocating for the beauty of white, cream and a touch of black, I was all in to try it for a week.

… ok, the Takeaways this week:

1. White + cream is maybe even > white + white. Ofc I like all crisp white together too. But white and cream, even khaki, ends up reading as tonal shades of white. It’s easy and sophisticated.

2. Black de-sweetens the deal. It’s key to give some grounded urbanity, a little hit of wrong, to keep things from floating away. Without it you risk looking kind of fairylike, kind of Canyon Ranch leading the soundbathy. If that’s not your vibe, the black really helps.

3. Texture up! Mixing textures adds so much interest to these no-color colors, kind of taking the place of color and print. You don’t want to go all cotton. Play with silky textures, sequins, pearls, etc.

4. Bring the inside out. I notice lately that I’ve been getting new life out of things that came with and were intended to go under other things. A slip that was sold as a liner for a dress, for example. Consider whether pieces you normally wear as lingerie, etc. could get out there and work in other ways.

5. Don’t fear the sheer! I think sometimes we think of sheer as “sexy” - but I just think of it as a way to add interest. Even the things that you might think of as a beach cover or something for dress … just bring them out. A long white t-shirt chills sheer out.

Some of you might know that I recently sold my marketing and advertising business to my former partner; I’d been the founder and chief creative officer for over eight years. One of the most frequent things I was called upon to do during that time was lead the development of brand DNAs.

Why? Among other reasons, before doing any other work, you need an agreed upon measuring stick to judge it. Without that shared definition, how will you be able to tell whether a site design or an app or a simple piece of copy or anything else is “on brand”?

Recently I was out with a friend who I think has always really known who she is style wise. And she said something along the lines of “I just don’t get all this style adjective stuff, like why?”

That’s right for her, because she’s so unfailingly clear. But for those of us who are working to refine or style, to see or maintain a through line, to evaluate why something isn’t working, to look critically at purchases, we need that thing, that reminder that says “this is me.”

And it always made sense to me to use the very same approach that was so successful for brands in my business to try to better hone in on my own personal style brand.

But - it turns out, limiting myself to the parameters I used to give brands was sticking myself in a box where I didn’t fit. And didn’t need to be. Maybe you’re the same.

This week’s theme came by request of subscriber . (Thanks, Kelly!)There’s been quite a bit of Tibi content around using the Tibi color wheel to dress by city. Good inspiration here.

I think the crux of it is that you want to feel comfortable wherever you are, but also like your quintessential self. I didn’t specifically do color palette analysis. For me I just summarized LA as laid back, cool, open. I translated that into denim and tees, murky colors and neutrals with a couple good pops. Here’s what I figured out:

… ok, the Takeaways this week:

1. Look for small pieces that pack a big punch. My little cape piece from Hanna Yoo will go everywhere with me. I can do it over a tee, over a blazer, over a sweater. Over index on small things that feel like you.

2. You don’t need to buy anything for a trip. Wearing things you already know well is a comfort while you’re away and a way to feel like yourself in another city.

3. Layer like a MF. And then pack more layers in your carryon. Airplanes are so freaking cold. Some charge for a blanket or don’t have them at all. But also tying pieces in unusual ways can both ease you into a location, ensuring you have options, and keep you feeling like you.

4. Don’t overlook the long sleeve shirt. An underrated and overlooked layer. Around the waist, under a blazer or sweater or button-up, easy to sleep/lounge in. An easy way to casualize in a city that calls for it, and feel comfy in your room where you want to recharge and feel like you.

5. A weird green sweater is still the most useful thing around. This is the simplest way to relax an outfit for a low key city, calm bright colors, etc. Especially the case for a seaside or “chill” location.

6. Keep your eyes open for convertible bags. Bags that do double duty as clutches and totes. These are incredible for travel and let you save space for things that are high impact. If you are packing a separate clutch, definitely stuff it with socks and jewelry to make use of the space. One bag also becomes a comfort and a signature during a trip.

7. Bring familiar formulas. A slip dress and oversized tee is something that always makes me feel like me for examples. Give some thought to what yours might be and take it along.

A bit ago I was getting ready to visit a friend on a Saturday. Weekends are my hardest time to dress because all week long I outfit lean with a theme. The weekends are a free-for-all and I don’t always know where to begin. While I was in the shower I settled myself of jean shorts and a white buttonup. It was then just about some third piece to finish it off.

Thinking this might make some interesting material, I turned my camera on and made a reel.

In the process, I realized that this is, semi-unknowingly, something I’ve done for a long time. Back when I was the CD at M.Gemi with a young child and a partner working restaurant hours, I wanted to look “fashion” and “leaderish” — fast. I used to do what I called “outfit roulette.” I’d put on black leggings, a black turtleneck bodysuit, and some black boots. And then add - whatever. Strong-shouldered blazer, a cape-thing with a belt in the middle, a long knit vest.

is the one who first got me thinking understanding this in terms of “base outfits.” I use this approach especially when I need to get something together in a hurry. An easy, practical base as a starting point (black bodysuit + leggings, white buttonup + jean shorts). And because my style DNA is a little more, in order to really feel something, I add a “third piece.”

And in fact, it affects my shopping. I like having all the basic elements in iterations that I love. And I do dip into exciting ready-to-wear pieces that speak to me emotionally. But my real focus is always on these third pieces. Why?

• They’re interesting but also practical. You’re not going to outgrow them, so there’s less risk than investing in say, a dramatic skirt. Because of that, they really last.

• They give new life to old pieces, or things you’ve lost interest in.

• They make getting dressed easier, allowing you to use a simple base but get more impact.

• You can often find them at reasonable prices. Just as an example, sure the Tibi PVC belt is $375. But compare that with other Tibi statement-making pieces like the side-cut blazer ($995) or the eco-poplin tank dress ($765). The belt packs a whallop and brings freshness to the simple t-shirt dress you already own.

• They’re a great item to thrift or shop secondhand. Often overlooked because they can be hard to understand. And rarely subject to the wear and tear of say, a tee or pair of pants.

• And there’s a wow moment when you discover them.

Oh wait, let me whet your appetite with a collage of some of my favorites, like the kids do.

Anyway, since I’ve been sharing this thought of using third pieces to transform your base formulas a lot on IG, I’ve gotten loads of questions around these third pieces. Especially how and where I find them. I thought I’d break it down here, in this smaller community, and share singular secondhand finds too in case you’re an itchy collector.

“Third Piece” is, I believe, an old-school styling term. Something a stylist in the personal shopping department of say Nordstrom would tell their rushed exec client who just wants a formula, damn it. It doesn’t mean one specific thing; it’s that category of SOMETHING (long necklace, tasseled scarf, cropped knit…) that takes one or two separates and spins them into an outfit, a look. (And note, third pieces don’t have to be “layers” - a bright sock could be your third pice, or a brooch, or a ball cap.)

On Saturday, the paid subs will get a deeper dive into all things third piece, including what to search for when unearthing them secondhand, a closet tour of some of my favorites, and more.

But this week was about testing the hypothesis. Do you really need a third piece?

Short answer: Your life, your style, your rules. You don’t have to layer or add a third piece! But for me, personally, when I just put on a shirt and pants, and even more so with a dress, I often don’t feel enough and crave something more. The idea of this third piece, bringing in one more thought, even when it’s super simple, really helps me feel like me, and might help you feel like you. The bonus, I find, is that as my weight has fluctuated over time, the third pieces always fit. It’s allowed me to create quite a collection over the decades, and they have a lot of staying power.

… ok, the Takeaways this week:

1. After you get dressed, ask yourself what you feel. If the answer is nothing, meh, sleepy, fine… try a third piece.

2. You don’t need to buy anything. The easiest third pieces are things you already own. a blazer, a bomber, a vest. A sweater, shirt or sweatshirt around the waist. A colorful sock or tube sock.

3. Consider adding acidity. A third piece can be a way to get the same wang wang you feel in your taste buds when a dish has a hit of vinegar or fish sauce. The third piece equivalent might be a red/orange bangle, a very sharply bright sweater, a lime sock.

4. Don’t sweat it. It’s getting warmer; don’t add a third piece if it’s going to make you sweaty and uncomfortable. I actually like a sock in hot weather; I prefer that feel on my foot. But you could also do a necklace, bracelet, ring, hair accessory, statement belt or two of them, a flower pin, etc.

5. A third piece can really help with color. You’ve heard the Tibi one/ton/none theory. The eye doesn’t know quite where to go with just two bold colors (look at the orange dress and yellow shoe below). But if you add more color, i.e. a “ton,” the eye settles all over seeing an outfit versus ping ponging in between. To a colorful dress and shoe, adding on one more colorful element (or several) can strike a better-feeling balance.

I am less “fashion girl” and more “personal style woman” - so the Met Gala rarely gets my juices flowing. And nope, not this year. But. But. Two looks made me FEEL something.

One, model Bhavitha Mandava in a couture version of the runway version of what she was wearing when she was first discovered,

and two, in a very different way, Ciara headed to the afterparties having modified her Met look by slipping into some boyfriend jeans.

Both of them very different, obviously. A couture LOOK that was likely saying something about the art of making these everyday working items at this ethereal level, elevating luxury and craft. The second taking down a look, capturing that feeling we all know: that the real party is the after party at home, in your comfies, like on Summer House when everyone rolls in from the bars and the dancing starts.

With all the special clothes I own, when it comes time to go “out out,” I only want to be in my jeans or sweats.

A bit ago (I’ve been ruminating on this one for a while) I started to notice this really strong feeling I had. With all the clothes I own (so many that I need more occasions to wear them!), when it comes time to go out-out, I only want to be in my jeans or sweats.

Maybe it started on this one day when I was vegetating at home in my Tibi Winslows, nursing a little bit of a blue feeling, and waiting on my husband for late date night at a chic Indian restaurant in Wynwood. The idea of a “look” felt like SO MUCH. I decided instead to keep the Winslows, add my trusty (old) Bottega blazer, and put on a pair of heels. I loved it. The Security Blanket sweats eased me into the date.

But it wasn’t a one time thing. The outfits I feel best in at night are all like this. My The Only Jane jeans (bought big on purpose) and an old Prada buttonup with a cut out in back. ‘s pale Renggli denim with a Margiela blue work shirt. My growing collection of secondhand men’s Balenciaga denim pieces with some version of a ”nice” tee like my Carven one that ties in back.

Then came an early birthday party and Caviar & Closets (read about that here) for my friend ’s birthday. Running late, I figured I’d go with my recently-purchased Margiela chambray denim. And my Tibi baseball shirt, which I love. Plus dressy shoes and jewelry.

But when I arrived, I realized I had really misstepped.

I have always been a person who likes to honor an occasion. This was a party, a birthday, and a night with some of the most important people in my life. What was I waiting to get dressed for?!

I felt - so off.

I thought maybe I could use some help getting at the why of it all. So I wrote to someone cerebral about personal style for her take. said, “Maybe you are seeking friction in your life or assurance that you won’t feel sameness. Not so much seeking to not be the same as others, but just simply not the feeling of sameness that can make us feel a little indistinguishable in a world where everyone seems to be working so hard to stand out.”

That does make sense. Miami is a DRESS UP place. Getting dressed up to go into a dress up situation can lead me to feel - well, an absence of feeling. On one of my first nights in Miami, we went out for this fancy dinner at Surf Club and I was dressed really heavy on the Miami, in a taxi yellow shirt with a pussy bow and a sculptural hot pink McQueen ball skirt. These young women were eying me at the bar, and I was still in Boston mode feeling like it must be judgement, I must look ridiculous. And instead one said “you look AMAZING.”

I don’t own either of those pieces any more. My “Miami King” personal style flexes from year to year, day to day, but has evolved over time to be a little Miami and a lot of “king” … I still like a little bold right now, but feel really driven by lots of heritage, masculine pieces and ideas.

I think it’s in part that evolution, actually, that has me feeling such a strong drive to go out in these boyish pieces at night, and like Amy says, that craving to “feel” that friction can satisfy.

I also had another aha. And I had it while reading a post from the uber chic Ghia founder, . (Ghia is the most amazing nonalc treat around; IYKYK and I hope YK!) She’d written about her ritual of having a Ghia at the end of the day to kind of kick off the wind-down into evening.

I really love this. I too sort of slip into a drink sometimes and feel the way it seems to kick off “after work” time. But I had never done this at home. I started having a Ghia or sometimes mixing a seltzer and olive brine as a symbolic home “happy hour” (without the calories etc.) It works. Fizzing in a glass of ice is a sensory experience that makes my brain distinguish between work day and after work.

This distinction has been more important than ever to me lately. As many of you know, I sold my former business and began writing full time. My income now comes from what I really love to do, writing this newsletter, sharing shopping finds, and collaborations. I’m also finishing a novel. But that means I am no longer doing the Zoom calls that regularly punctuated my work day. It means my work routinely bleeds into nights and evenings. Now I want to feel like I’m “going to work” each day - it helps me focus and create lines between work and home. So I get dressed and go to Angelinas, my cafe of choice. BUT it also means that when I put on many of my dressier items, I feel like I’m going to work. And at the end of the day, like having a Ghia on the rocks, putting on my sweats or my jeans gives me a kind of lowering of the shoulders; the work day is done.

Of course I want to adapt these kinds of pieces in my “going out” life. It makes sense. I get to feel that Sharon-Stone-at-the-Oscars-in-her-hub’s-white-shirt feeling — BTW, it’s addictive, Sharon had gone for it only two years before in her Gap turtleneck, remember? — and I also get that shedding-work moment.

So instead of buckling down and putting on some damn CLOTHES, I wondered if instead there were some principles I could pull together to rectify that not-right feeling I’d had with my friends. I hadn’t planned on a sponsor for this one, but found Inez at just the right time. Because a festive shoe is a big part of the equation, and they are known for artful, special heels that are actually wearable. So let’s go! Or maybe, since they’re made in Spain, vamos!

revisionist history

I decided to start at the scene of the crime, with those (very casual!) Margiela jeans I wore to meet my friends.

First up, my Tibi baseball tee was playing at the same level as the Margiela denim - a luxurious take on a classic. So to begin, I swapped the tee for something less causal but not so dressy as to feel jarring with the jean, this 440ME cardigan. I got out my red Inez Yvonne, which instantly felt good. But I still wanted to feel “more."

Bringing in the green Old Celine blazer with the red shoe gave me more structure and that little bit of “wrong” that I like. So did the added texture of a sparkly Prada bag. The Miu Miu glasses have a little bit of red; I was thinking of ‘s drive to thread a second “friend” through a look. Had I worn this to the party, I would have felt a lot better.

I also played with whether keeping things tonal would still work; how big of a role was color playing here?

This look above feels a little less dressy. But still good. Maybe not so much for a party, but definitely for a date night. The clutch, the silver on this flat, the vintage Pucci frames all give it a little something. I would not feel the same without the structure of the Tibi blazer. That feels like a key element.

Here, though, with a less structured shoulder, still tonal in these icy colors, I still felt good.

With my arms exposed in this Marni jacket, adding the silver watch over my sleeve helps it feel “party” ish.

Does it all fall apart when I bring the baseball tee back? Not necessarily!

Here I did a full scale re-do of my original ‘fit.

Here’s why it works:

• I focused on a tighter color story. In general I play it fast and loose, mixing metals, etc. But here, wanting to look more polished and thoughtful, I kept everything but the jean black/white + silver. And the jean itself is light and has white in it, so it blends as well rather than pops.

• I brought in a REALLY structured jacket. The more casual the foundation, the more structure you want. This secondhand Balenciaga hourglass makes for a cohesive color story with the tee but adds a TON of structure.

• I picked a pointy shoe. Like the padded shoulder, the point of the shoe makes it very architectural in feel. That really tidies up the jean. And the silver befriends the silver on the belt. (My shoe is sold out; these would work!)

Of course, everything gets easier if you have a few jeans in your arsenal that are dressier to start with. Let me show you what I mean.

So right away the dark jean starts things off feeling more “party vibe.” But what’s really making things festive is the shoe. Even when I have a pretty standard button up on (it’s Acne via eBay), the shoe does a lot: the chunky heel, the shine and burgundy leather, the geometry of the strap and of course the silver buckles. My hand-me-down croc belt from dad has a color relationship without being an exact match and the silver buckle “catches” (an ref) the silver on the shoe. I could go out and feel understated and great like this.

But if the vibe is extra, I can gild the lily with a third piece.

Let me show you in more detail:

Here, above I added a silver leather piece (it’s past season Dries … note, a piece like this is a great use of sale season - more on this coming!) Since that covers the belt up, I added a brown leather bracelet (old Celine via TRR) to callback that shoe color.

Here’s just a different take. Keeping the belt exposed, I took this little Prada cape and tied it around like a half skirt. I like that the pattern incorporates a little ivory too. Lots of color relationships here. The other thing that’s helpful in the addition of the capelet as the “more item” is its softness. Where if I’d had the belt and the ornamented shoe and, say, a big necklace, that would feel like a lot of metal competing for attention.

Now if you’re really a person who loves to wear jeans out, you might want to invest in a pair of true PARTY jeans.

For me, that was a pair of Valeria Krasavina’s Apollos. I absolutely wear them during the day, and often at home, too - Valeria designed them for herself while she was pregnant and they certainly lend themselves to this, with their balloon-y shape and elastic waist.

But this is something that instantly telegraphs “festive” — even more than “jean.” And they are a softer denim-style fabric not a true denim. I first thought to bring my “tonal” and “cohesive” takeaways into styling these.

You’d think the jean jacket would make this less “dressy,” but because it’s so cohesive, it feels pulled together and intentional. And therefore, in a way, respectful. The heel does A LOT. And the red echoes the red bead work. If I had shown up to my friend’s in this I would have felt appropriate.

But it’s definitely A MOOD. And very MIAMI. If I wanted to make it feel calmer and more sophisticated could I?

Sure — I just made a tighter, more low-key color story: just black and navy with hits of silver. Now I have the Jules on — a slight, sexy sandal with silver studs that gives lots of “skin.” The heel is really good; just the right height and a great, modern line. Glasses with black and silver. Echoes in the bag and belt buckle. I liked the short denim jacket proportionally with the big jean so I used a cropped blazer (it’s old Prada). Same idea for a different mood.

okay but, sweatpants?

If you’re a person who wants to go anywhere in sweats, start by investing in a pair of Tibi Winslows. I know I’m reverential and it sounds like I’m in a cult but it’s just because, honestly, they’e a game changer. I have tried, multiple times on my own and by chasing others’ recommendations, to find something less expensive that’s in the ballpark, but they suck once you’ve tried these. And especially if you have an interest in dressing them up. Better to “cry once” as they say. My three pairs are gray (I have the lightweight in Miami and the regular in Boston and also a “denim look” one with belt loops.) I like gray for when I want to look and feel casual. But that also makes it the hardest to dress up. As I write this I’m considering … another?

But the things is, when you bring in all these dark elements, the sweatpants really stand out. Instead of seeing “outfit” - you’re seeing “item.” And it’s the part that I’d most like to recede and just be.

So I tried swapping the black blazer and navy knit for more tonal pieces.

I like this a lot. It reads as one look, and the shoe becomes the “pop.” (Again, I have the Miu Miu glasses with a little red in the frame to nod to them.) The bag is that reddish brown, so it plays tonally and also eases the red shoe in.

And then I took it even a step further.

Here I took the blazer off and layered on a sheer dress by Valeria Krasavina. I still feel everything good about being in my sweatpants, but this just mutes them completely and turns them into something else. A different brown red bag. I could go almost anywhere in this.

Wildcards

Not that I have every SATC ep memorized (yes I do), but let’s go back to that final scene in “a woman’s right to shoes.” This one:

The outfit has been with me forever — that cropped cargo and the silver Manolo and the slim silky, slightly transparent shirt? Yet sometimes I forget about my own cargos as another unexpected night time option. So I took the lessons learned and swapped them in.

• Big pants + cropped top: A helpful formula. I notice most of my comfy home pants are roomy. Makes sense. And makes them appealing to leave the house in. Something relatively short/slim on top strikes the right balance.

• Harmonious color story: It’s not all one color, but it’s harmonious so that the eye doesn’t fixate on the pants. Here the poppy tank brings your eye up. And everything else has a relationship: the burgundy shoe relates to the poppy and the khaki jacket, the khaki jacket relates to the shoe and the cargo, etc.

• Finding friends. The other thing working is bringing in the silver ball necklace to have a relationship with the ornament on the shoe.

I think you can use the same approach with lots of other things, too. Athletic pants. Anything “slouchy'“ in name or concept. Men’s khakis. Etc.

The impact of layering more and more of a single color (the shades can be different!) speaks to something I know I’ve mentioned before: A good sale pickup when you’re looking is something that builds on a color you own and love. Keep that one in mind.

The naughty factor

Finally, something else came to me as I wrote this. Back a zillion years ago when I was a student at Dana Hall (it’s an all girls’ school), we used to go to class in our school sweatpants with our nightgowns tucked inside. And maybe a pair of Bean boots. Something about taking my “sweats” (such as they are) out at night seems to spark a little of that in me. With limited ways to be bad in my seat belted life (I recently told a stranger on a motorcycle at the light to buckle his chin strap), I take my nostalgic rule-breaking wherever I can find it.

This week was supposed to be all about the third piece. Instead it was about praying to the porcelain gods more times than I did back at Penn circa 1993.

O M F G. I’m pretty sure this was the cause, and it was brutal. All bets were off when it came to getting dressed. Like, for real. But as I took teeny steps toward recovery, I noticed clothes helped, and also that the whole ordeal taught me a few things about dressing to restore or maintain your sense of self, even when no one is watching.

… ok, the Takeaways this week:

1. Love everything you own. Everything. I put this idea forward here and some of you debated me. Do you have to LOVE your white tank top? But now I have decided it’s undebatable. You do. If you LOVE everything you own, then you can always throw darts at something that will feel pretty good in times like these. If you love everything you own, when you don’t posses the strength to get out of your pajamas, you’ll at least like how you feel in them.

2. Tie something around your waist. Push up a sleeve. Stick your pants into your sock. These little things you might do without thinking in normal life make you feel more human when you use them while at home. A sweater around your waist or shoulders or neck makes it easy for you to regulate your temperature and also is a little third piece that makes you feel like you.

3. Don’t save your best stuff. Too much of the time I used to save my best tees and walk around at home in the gross ones. Home life is life. You are living it. It’s a t shirt. If it gets dirty, it gets washed. I have a favorite striped tee that makes me feel so good. Putting it on made me feel like I was getting back to myself. (I absolutely love this color way, which is 40% off - whatttt?)

4. Sleep in non-sleep wear: I will go to sleep in a regular sweater. And a soft blazer. It feels good. Why not? I love sleeping in this old Tibi sweater with detachable sleeves; when I get hot I can just remove my arms from them.

5. Don’t skip the “beach pants” section. I now have two pairs of pants I love hanging out in that were classified as “beach pants.” But they’re also lounge pants, PJ pants, and just … pants.

6. Use off hours as experimentation opportunities. With no one to see you, it’s a great time to play with color, try ‘s wrong shoe theory, tie a sweater differently, etc. Make the most of it in low stakes moments.

MONDAY

On Monday I couldn’t get out of my pajamas. (This photo is from the night before.) But I recently had upgraded my sleep wear drawer, including buying this navy blue Negative Underwear whipped Henley and matching pant. Being in this made me feel more cared for and less lost. Damn right I am buying more of them.

TUESDAY

On Tuesday I took a long nap after I woke up, and I felt better. Ever the hopeful, I was like, “whatever that was, it’s gone!” (G-d laughed.)

I showered and changed into what I’d planned to wear, a blue Miu Miu skirt and a great white tee and my Miu Miu rope sandals. Plus a weird green Miu Miu socklet-thing as the “third piece.”

Wendy and I did The Package Room (usually on Mondays):

• 440ME oversized t-shirt, also like this low mock neck

• Miu Miu knit skirt (similar, but mini), secondhand sporty style, (always love this one, longer length) and the pointelle knit from Leset is always good

Immediately afterwards, I said to Wendy, “I’m a little tired now.” She didn’t even have time to make it to the door. I was already out cold on the couch and down for the count.

Ok, here we go.

I got this subscriber question and thought it would make for an interesting week. Many of us here are big Tibi fans in particular. And one of my friends once said something like “I can always tell those Tibi girls on the street from the way they tie a sweater.” I get that. There’s a lot of alignment of principles, a lot of styling content that makes sense to a broad swath of us, and we do buy the things.

Add to this the notion of “the full look.” Like, in print magazines how an advertiser might insist that the editorial feature their full look rather than the stylists’ own creation pulled from all over, including those magical bits that are “the stylist’s own.” Wearing an entire head to toe look IRL can feel like that - sponsored content.

But … maybe not. Maybe all one designer head to toe can be a tricky unlock to cohesive and interesting outfit-making.

… ok, the Takeaways this week:

1. Looks that feature all one designer make for easy cohesion. Even across different years/seasons. I explored this in ‘23 with dark hair and some other things that make me cringe now but that’s ok.

2. Feature pieces across multiple eras and seasons and departments. For me, the biggest risk involves all one designer, all the same year, even season. That’s where you can feel, catching a glimpse of yourself, like you were churned out of a factory. Shop across departments, across lines, and beyond.

3. Yet another benefit of shopping secondhand. Turns out, all one designer isn’t an issue as much as all right NOW. History, even a little, gives things texture and interest. Everything isn’t so shiny and new and anonymous and everywhere. As long as you do some secondhand shopping, chances are you’ll end up mixing eras without even having to think about it.

4. Layer yourself. Along with secondhand pieces, those personal items that are “so you” also counter that factory feeling. Your regular necklace stack, a certain cord around your wrist, a “you thing” like a bright sock with a loafer, etc. The things that make you feel the most like you — make sure they’re present and accounted for.

5. And it’s ok if it’s your thing! I should also note the judgement baked into my headline “like a fashion victim.” If you are that person with the means to buy an entire designer look head to toe or maybe just a brand’s head-to-toe look from social, and that makes you feel like you, who am I to judge!? You are no victim. Do it! Own it!

[Background: In January, 2025, I decided to BE DONE with rules. No more “no-buys” “one-buys” — all of it had made shopping too big a focus in my life. (More on that here if you’re interested.) I then completed a class on over-shopping. Clothing and shopping are still passions of mine, and I do not apologize for loving them. But I can’t Nike “just do it” when it comes to this stuff. March was the aha moment that I have to give up my attempts to control other people. I can’t. You can’t. There’s the piece that’s like - “I don’t like everybody and not everybody will like me.” And then there’s this other thing — I have to let go of my repeated desire to understand, to correct the record, to make sense of the senseless. And that’s not “giving up” in a bad way. Maybe we can rebrand it as Giving! Up! (Both very positive words!)

April was my first month of working on Giving Up. Breathing. Lowering my shoulders. Just being quiet. Thank you IG algo for feeding me all the content I need exactly when I need it.

When I get flooded with - “does no one see that this person is stealing ideas! Gaming the system!” or “Distracting from their own bad behavior? Hello!” I want to say this to myself:

It doesn’t matter what’s happening over there. There are so many good things happening over here.

I calm myself by going through a mental index, “I have done everything I can. I’ve been direct. I’ve laid out a clear boundary. I’ve explained the way I feel.” I have done all that I could.

But I haven’t heard much about wearing calming colors and the effect of that on the psyche. I had a chance to find out last week when I (hopefully we!) used cool and lovely silver, white and gray as the theme — together a palette of calm. I was curious to see what the effect would be. And the timing is particularly good, since a lot of people and things (orange circus peanut, the comments sections on IG, etc.) have been making me feel like going freaking ballistic!!! a bit agitated.

Btw. I am working on my photography! It’s a WIP this week, but we are getting somewhere. Thanks for bearing with me.

… ok, the Takeaways this week:

1. Calm <3s texture. Especially if you’re someone like me who wants to feel a lot in her clothes. I found myself really craving things like denim and woven leather and pleats.

2. Watch out for Canyon Ranch syndrome. Too much pale and easy can make you look like you’re leading the nature walk. Silver is a good add for this reason. Think about a bit of toughness in shapes, accessories, etc. Lean into some masc elements.

3. Punctuate. Adjacent to the above. Ground the easy + breezy and light with some substance. Black and dark brown leather, a shoe with a little heft, a belt with some hardware, etc.

4. Use calming colors as a tool. When you have rough day coming at you, consider soothing colors, the same way you would do other things like packing lunch or writing out a to do list. I hadn’t thought of this before, but it works in the same way brights do.
