෴ Holding breath ෴

In 2020 my son was born in an emergency C section after they lost his heartbeat multiple times during labor. I was rushed down the hall and into the OR on a gurney thinking, you will be ok. You will be ok. You will be ok. 

You will.

I will.

We will.

Today my youngest turns 3 months old. 

On March 6, 2023 she came into this world silently. A nurse put her on my chest. She was limp with purple hands and I said to her, you will breathe. You will breathe. You will breathe. Soon after, she breathed with some help. And soon after that she breathed on her own. Then I took a breath too. Was I willing her to breathe or willing myself to believe she would? Is there a difference? 

The difference that I felt, this time, was one of resolve. When I said “you will,” I accepted it more readily. I felt still and steady. My will was made of stronger stuff after two years of being a parent. Two years of keeping a tiny human alive. Two years of the daily mantra;

You will.

I will.

We will.

෴ Belief system ෴

Will isn't anything more than hope and circumstance.

A cloudy crystal ball of wishes and expectation.

Magic words we whisper.

You will sleep.

You will wake .

Incantations we scream silently.

We will leave the house.

We will not forget anything.

Spells without any real power.

You will pee in the potty.

You will not throw your food.

Words we know but don’t want to say out loud.

You will get bigger.

You will grow up.

But parenting isn’t wizardry. Children grow without much intervention or tending. They hurdle forward, learning through action, through disaster, through success. Our wills as parents serve at most as guardrails. A net woven with good intentions.

You will breathe.

You will feed me.

You will sleep.

You will hold me.

You will wake.

You will keep me safe.

After three months I’ve stopped staring at her while she sleeps to see if she’s breathing. 

She smiles now. She coos and laughs. The spells we cast are more fun. 

You will reach.

You will grasp.

You will roll.

Three months of S.

Thirty two months of J.

Four hundred and forty two months of me.

We will play

We will learn

We will love

We will survive.

We will.

I’ll write you again in a month, perhaps sooner, possibly later.

⋒ She’s not here ⋒

I didn’t intend to take a 3 month hiatus from the internet. I didn’t tear myself away and say “It’s time for a detox lady!”

No, I just faded away.

I burned out *sigh,* again.

⋒ Alice and the slippery slope ⋒

Between finishing the semester, starting my third trimester of pregnancy, the holidays, and a sudden and unexpected surge of very intense client work, I began to fall apart a little. I succumbed to the grind and I came out a fine powder, susceptible to the slightest breeze.

First went my routine and structure — It’s ok, I’ll just get this work done and then I’ll get back to normal! I detach from the internet. A distraction!

Then went my health — Not my fault! It’s an exhausting time, my toddler and my students are exposing me to viruses, I’m anemic from pregnancy. It’ll pass. I stop answering emails. I’ll get to them. soon.

Then went my ability to cope with / manage my inner monologue — It’s a mean dialogue. A disappointed and cruel voice that pulls me down. When she gets louder, I shrink. I recede. I say sorry, a LOT. I try so hard, but seem to only accomplish the bare minimum. I detach from friends, I find it hard to leave the house.

⋒ Snakes and ladders ⋒

But, I know this hole. It’s very familiar. I’ve hung some nice art on the walls. I work on finding my way out from the bottom up. Better mental health, physical health, and healthy approaches to work. But I always need a ladder to get me back up to a place where I can feasibly climb out.

This week, I woke up and saw that people were posting hourly comics. February 1st is hourly comics day1 every year. I’ve done it a few times2, and enjoyed it. I tepidly opened my art account on instagram for the first time in months. I love making comics. I love sharing my life3. I felt a teeeeeny tiny ember in my heart and hand and thought, let this be the ladder!

⋒ Staying grounded ⋒

I don’t know if I’m out of my hole yet but I am peeking above the surface. I can smell grass. I can see clouds on a swath of sky. I’m not ready to get the soil out from under my nails. Not yet.

✲ A season of soft edges ✲

Sometimes I find myself lacking an exactness in how I feel or what I’m thinking, making it difficult to write. Difficult to focus. Difficult to do most creative things. I’ve had so many outward tasks that require my attention lately, that I’ve been unable to listen inward and find my voice.

I’m filled with muffled echoes of thought, but the source eludes me. I’ve been doodling as a passive, spontaneous kind of making so that my unconscious mind can play and speak while my conscious mind works. 

Perhaps this is the turning of the season. The transition from the organized and industrious Virgo season1 into Libra season2. A step into the hazy subconscious. A time to notice beautiful things and collect them, tucking nuggets away for hibernation.

Not yet curating, only gathering. 

✲ Casual zealot ✲

I don’t know much about astrology, nor do I hinge any decisions on it. But I do like it conceptually and find those who study it intriguing3. What magic are they privy to? How can they be so faithful to something so based on interpretation4? Although I can't call myself a believer, I'm a curious follower5 on the outskirts of the devoted, eating a snack and seeing what happens. This month, I gather from my outsider position, is one of love.

Finding connection within the self in order to strengthen bonds with others. My new artist statement.

If I can’t hear myself think, perhaps I’m not meant to be listening to my head. Perhaps I can spend some time trying to listen to my heart. There is so much inspiration in rediscovering the things we love, in being aware of the stuff that brings us fullness and joy.

May we all find many lovely moments to save for later. May we have enough to share.

Did you know that sometimes commissioned editorial artwork will get created, but not run? That’s called having a piece killed. It’s disappointing, but it happens to most illustrators at some point. I still got paid for this piece, but I wish it had been published — look at how well it came out! In future paid posts I plan to show the full process for editorial pieces like this that include my notes and thumbnails.

MICA: Teaching

For the past month I’ve been teaching my Friday class at MICA, Narrative: Words & Pictures. I give my students lots of drawing exercises in class so that they stay loose, and remember to be less precious, and are encouraged to play. We start each session with a doodle selfie based on a prompt. I do them too for solidarity, accountability, and to build connection with my students. Added bonus: they’re fun!

✶ Summer Bummer ✶

I’m usually a big fan of summer. My birthday is in the summer. I love unexpected tan lines, I love ice cream, I love my multitude of freckles. Being hot is fine by me (but under 95˚F if you please), and I am in my bliss near any water that I can swim, soak, or dip in. During summer I feel vibrant, excited, and ready to explore. But this summer … kind of sucked.

Save for a few very lovely moments (Weddings of dear friends, some sweet afternoons, good news here and there), we, as a family, have had our asses kicked by kismet on the regular since June. I won’t go into the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune that have plagued us1, but I will say that I am looking forward to closing the book on summer, and starting fresh this coming fall.

✶ Cue “September” by Earth Wind and Fire ✶

Having grown up in Southern California, the sheer existence of seasons will never not be magical to me. The start of any season always feels like a mini new year, a time for reflection and stepping into a new outlook. A chance to start again, to build something new, to take a deep breath and say “I got this.”

School is starting and I begin to teach again tomorrow2. I find that the lead-in to the semester always fills me with a buzzing creative energy3 that is fueled by the anticipation of a seasonal shift, a new page. But the most exhilarating (and terrifying) aspect of a new semester is the opportunity to create something as yet unknown with a new group of humans who all see, think, and make in different ways.

As I skim through my teaching materials and plan out the next 16 weeks, I’ve been examining my own practice, questioning whether I’m giving guidance that I myself am or am not taking. Instead of becoming anxious, which is what I would expect my natural response to be, I get truly stoked to try again, to relearn, to start over with these new minds I’ve never met before.

I’m opening my sketchbook more lately, thinking of more stories, more games, more ways to make. Here are some of the autumnal reminders I’ve collected, ways I hope my practice will guide me as I turn this leaf.

This substack version of NWP will go slower than the IRL class, allowing you time to take in the content, and create your own work. I developed this class with the visual medium in mind, however If you are not an illustrator or visual artist, this class and its exercises can be adapted to any form of expression with a little creativity. These exercises could be translated into movement, craft, or even code. I’d be very excited to see your modifications if you make them.

✤ COURSE DESCRIPTION ✤

What makes a story? How do we communicate our narratives through writing and drawing?

This course is an exploration of the relationship between text, image, and artist. Throughout the semester, we will examine rhythms of storytelling, while experimenting with techniques and tools to develop a practice and narrative voice that is unique to each student. 

We will focus on coaxing out our authentic narrative style through workshops, introspective practice, and playful exercises. Students will have the opportunity to develop these explorations into three finalized pieces.

The form of these projects may materialize as picture books, comics, experimental zines, or something else. It depends on what you discover about yourself and your practice during this class!

Above all, this course aims to give you the opportunity to discover and develop original, authentic narratives with a strong emphasis on creative self discovery. 

✤ MATERIALS✤

The only required material for this class is your process journal. The tools you use to fill it are up to you.

• Process Journal (Required) : Must be at least A5 (5⅞” x 8¼”) or larger

Our process journals will be where we will warm up, where we will do the majority of our assigned classwork, homework, workshops, brainstorming, and reaction pieces. This journal will serve as a living space where you will hone your thoughts and process as a storyteller. It will also serve as an artifact of our time together, with ideas to be unearthed later on.

✤ OFFICE HOURS✤

When the class ends, I plan to continue to use this space to share exercises, workshops, and other more in-depth creative practice opportunities. I believe that education should not be gate-kept behind the walls of expensive institutions, and hope that this will be an affordable way that I can share my teaching.

I have a problem with pushing myself too far. Right to the edge, where, given no other option, I fall asleep on the floor while picking up my child’s toys1. I work too hard, stay up too late, worry too much until I get sick and am forced to rest.

I used to find a lot of satisfaction and pride in exhaustion. Now, I’m just embarrassed. Why can’t I listen to my body when it says “that’s enough!” Why does the voice telling me “it’s not enough, there’s more to do, you’ve hardly done anything at all” always win?

I’d like to be a to-do list half done instead of a to-do list half undone kind of person.

I’d like to know how to be happy with “good enough.”

✹ How to be happy ✹

I recently listened to a Happiness Lab episode about burnout2. I paused the podcast. I heard a word that I had to look up because it sounded so fake: infinitude3.

In this episode, Jonathan Malesic posits that our cultural obsession with productivity connects to our attitude of infinitude. This false idea that we are, as individuals, infinite. That we can have everything that we want if we can just learn one more life hack. If we fit more hours in the day. If we listen to one more episode of Happiness Lab. But that’s the problem with infinity - you never get to the bottom of it. There’s never just one more thing. 

I don’t always like podcasts like this because the research and solutions they offer feel privileged and narrow. Malesic literally stopped working for years to cure his burnout. Ah yes - I will retire to the woods and subsist off berries. Thank you for your sage wisdom. But, after some time, this episode did acknowledge the fix we’re in. Infinitude is a pillar of capitalism. In this system, we never reach enough.

The Worker: Pushes their body toward unachievable infinite to simply survive.

The Employer: Forces their workers to achieve infinitely increasing goals of productivity and output.

The Culture: Idealizes and perpetuates the hustle and grind while telling workers that they are not working4 (we are) in order to sell a utopian (unobtainable) dream (lie).

Within this machine of capitalistic informed infinitude, finding our enough is a radical5 and seemingly impossible act. Instead of moving with the forward tide of more, how can we dig our feet in the sand and stop to notice when we’re satisfied? What’s more, is enough something only achievable by those who can afford it?

✹ Enough’s enough ✹

I find that this feeling of terminal infinitude can be particularly acute in creatives whose practice, life, and work all overlap. It’s that classic Venn diagram meme:

My enough becomes a nuisance when we’re tight for money. My enough feels transparent and thin when I haven’t done any personal work in awhile. My enough is hollow when I’m not prioritizing time with my husband, child, and pets.

How might we step back, and find balance in what’s enough in the moment?

It’s a tall order, but I’ve been trying to really recognize when I’ve felt joy or achievement and try to extend that feeling of worth. It doesn’t matter if it’s a piece of artwork, or a really good burrito that I made. I want to relish that good feeling for *days*. 

When I tell myself “more”, I want to answer “you sure?” “exactly how much more?” and “why?”

Finding my enough is a process. Recognizing and respecting it is a struggle. I fail at it almost every day. But I don’t fail at it every hour6.

Increments can be enough.

The subject of this letter arose organically with a friend (who, like me, is a recovering workaholic) over chat: Jennifer Ching Rest Isn’t Radical

Making It is a new project by me, Hayley, in an attempt to share and nurture creativity in a slower, more intentional (more annoying?) way.

Me:

How does someone truly process anything when life seems to move so *quickly*?

How can I hold joy, grief, anger, and energy for longer so that my actions transition from reaction to response?

How do I get back who I was while continuing to be the person I am becoming?

Why do these questions only arise when I’m changing a diaper?

My approach to processing anything (in a pre and post diaper context) has always been through art. But I am at a crossroads. The changes in my life and the world at large have made my prior relationship with my artistic practice untenable. This, in tandem with a global movement that is now being referred to as “the great resignation1” (I have *feelings* about this2), has highlighted that my mindset and drive is largely informed by capitalistic ideas of success and productivity. 

Over the past five years my practice has centered on sharing my experiences through drawings that I post on social media. My client work has generated from those pieces, and as long as I keep posting drawing posting drawing the wheels keep turning baby. 

Grind much? Yes. Burning at both ends? Always. Bad for me? Yes yes, more more.

I did find fulfillment from this method of making and sharing at one time. Or did I? It’s hard to say when it’s been shown that receiving *likes* is actually addictive3. But I know that I dread opening the apps4. That I feel like I’m failing when I do. That this way of making doesn’t work for me anymore, especially in my new life as a person who made a tiny person and is now responsible for that little wrecking ball of joy and curiosity and destruction.

Me plus one

Right before the pandemic started, I found out I was pregnant. In the past two+ years of pregnancy/baby/toddler motherhood I’ve had no choice but to relinquish my prior relationship with work. And it’s about damn time. I’ve always been prone to burnout, anxiety, and depression. With a little dude that I love so much under my wing, I can’t afford to let myself be consumed so easily by the pull of making work simply for the sake of productivity. And I don’t want to model or venerate the hustle and grind culture that defined so much of my adulthood (also youth? Who else started thinking about colleges in 4th grade?).

I’ve made big steps in the process of naming the problem, but making headway in addressing it isn’t easy. I’m still going through stages of anger, frustration, grief and disillusionment with the fact that I can’t “have it all.” Whatever “it” or “all” even is.

Me and it: untying the knot

The big step-back of parenthood has forced me to reconsider and reevaluate why my self-worth is so deeply tied to my productivity. I’m in the process of reframing my relationship with my art practice starting with how and what I share. 

This newsletter is a place where I can collect, scatter, and show what it is that I make. I know I’m more than my output, but so much of what I make defines who I am. But this work, I’m realizing, goes beyond my professional portfolio. I am making banana bread, I am making mends in tears, I am making my son a person, I am making thoughts, breath, footprints in the mud. 

Is this actually having it all? Have I “Made it?” No, but I am making. If you like, you can follow along. I’d love to share *it* with you.

I’m still figuring out what this is going to be, but here is the intention: 

This free newsletter will be a monthly thing. I’ll be sharing updates from my life with a focus on my art and practice. The details of how this looks and sounds will evolve as we go. If you’d like to tell people to join, please do so!

In the future, there may also be the option to subscribe to a paid version of the newsletter in which I share more about my process, my teaching materials, and inside looks at works in progress. If people are interested in this please let me know. I often need encouragement.

I know that nobody wants another email. No one needs a newsletter from me.
