Dec 4: NRDC's Rewrite the Future $20,000 Fellowship x 3

NRDC’s 2026 Rewrite the Future, in partnership with the Black List, CAA Community + Impact, NBCUniversal, and the Redford Center, invites writers to apply for the NRDC Climate Storytelling Fellowship, now open for submissions.

The annual fellowship encourages climate storytelling by supporting the revision of screenplays or pilots that engage with climate change in a meaningful way, through events, actions, character, emotions, plot, and/or setting.

The fellowship awards three recipients with $20,000 each and six months of mentorship with industry professionals and climate storytelling experts to provide creative support for their original script. At the conclusion of the fellowship, revised scripts will be hosted on the Black List website and may be reviewed for development by prominent studios, agencies, and/or production companies. Writers will retain all rights to their scripts.

Expand your references! Read some women screenwriters!

How many of your favorite films have been written by women? Probably more than you think. But (broad, sweeping, generalizing statement incoming…) the film industry doesn’t exactly exalt women, does it?

So having a round up like this from is exquisitely helpful. While the full article is paywalled, even just the first 15 scripts or so are enough to make this a summer syllabus that passes the Bechdel test. Study up!

THE REVOLUTION IS HERE

The last weekend of May, 2026 will long be remembered as when it was clear that Hollywood’s dominance ended. When it comes to a business model, there is one that has not only worked 3x in a row this year alone, but costs less and tastes a whole lot better. Follow the money to understand the pipeline

While making movies is hard for everyone (wealthy or not), we do a huge injustice to our own psyches when we compare apples and oranges.

That was my big takeaway from ’s breakdown of the unseen money that flows to certain films, helping them go from production to festival darling to industry breakout. Whether you want to talk about class or not, the material reality of how films get funded, which alma maters get the majority of institutional support, and whether directors get to take multiple swings (cinematically speaking), is important to put in context.

And it’s all the more reason we need a thriving, healthy, non-dependent cinematic ecosystem to support the working class and middle class films that might not otherwise see the light of day.

I’ve almost lived a lifetime now. I have wandered these mean streets of cinemaphilia for far too long. I have that great Chris Ware poster of Ozu’s work on my wall. And I love the films Alex cites in his post, but I still did not know what to call them beyond “transitions” until I read his post. Women screenwriters: CinemaStreet Pictures is accepting short dramatic scripts of any genre (20 minutes and under) for production consideration — with the winning writer receiving a $1,000 option. Scripts from anywhere in the world are eligible, as long as they’re in English.

Past winning scripts have made it to distribution (Love From Friends, 8:16 to Omaha), with two more currently in preproduction — so this one has real follow-through behind it. Dec 4: Deadline: NRDC’s Rewrite the Future $20,000 Fellowship x 3

NRDC’s 2026 Rewrite the Future, in partnership with the Black List, CAA Community + Impact, NBCUniversal, and the Redford Center, invites writers to apply for the NRDC Climate Storytelling Fellowship, now open for submissions.

The annual fellowship encourages climate storytelling by supporting the revision of screenplays or pilots that engage with climate change in a meaningful way, through events, actions, character, emotions, plot, and/or setting.

The fellowship awards three recipients with $20,000 each and six months of mentorship with industry professionals and climate storytelling experts to provide creative support for their original script. At the conclusion of the fellowship, revised scripts will be hosted on the Black List website and may be reviewed for development by prominent studios, agencies, and/or production companies. Writers will retain all rights to their scripts.

The FilmStack Daily has a sibling, and it sure is Deep.

Perhaps you know this already. But back when we birthed this ‘ol newsletter, we had another idea or twenty-five. Daily is a sampling of what the FilmStack community on a regular basis. Many ideas land here in a single issue. And that’s one of the ways our minds tend to work: look at what is before us at any given time and then assess. But it is not the only way we work.

Sometimes we like to focus more. Sometimes we want multiple perspectives gathered and contextualized, but all around a single subject. That’s where FilmStack Deep Dive comes in.

The sort of digging we do at The Deep Dive takes awhile to gel. Ideally we’d publish more regularly, but when you like to nudge towards the comprehensive it takes time. So we haven’t been publishing as often as we’d like, we’ve had some time to improve the logo and organization. You should check it out.

Is the future passing us by? Are we imagining hard enough?

What steps are we still missing?

I get so much from reading what shares. I hope you subscribe to the founder/CEO of Seed&Spark’s newsletter. In reading the linked post below, not only did her central idea — when we don’t have a working business model for cinema, we shouldn’t encourage people to be investing in film for financial reasons — resonate with me, but so did many other thoughts dancing on the periphery of her subject.

We are in the early days of building relationships with our audiences. Relationships are a two way street. What sort of return do we offer people on the investment of their engagement? Is providing audiences entertainment really enough? Is the sort of para-social relationship that a newsletter facilitates enough? Have we given enough thought about how to transform audiences into communities, or communities into collaborators? Can we do more experiments in this realm? What would they look like?

What do you do with the space between?

In this post, explores one of the film industry's most limiting tendencies: its need to categorize everything. Is it arthouse or commercial? Prestige or genre? Festival film or crowd-pleaser? While these labels may help financiers and distributors feel more comfortable, many of cinema's greatest works succeed precisely because they resist such easy classification. Don’t let this be a domino… and certainly not “The Final Domino”.

I wasn’t there at the BlockTheMerger LA Town Hall event on Saturday, but it was evidently a room full of folks who felt the same way. It is truly inspiring so many people recognize we need to show up and participate though (says the one who couldn’t).

Another character trope ready for abandonment, perhaps?

Vanessa and I were talking how too many writers and directors, producers, studios, distributors, and platforms all fall for the easy cliche. And how in doing so they not only install a false narrative in our symbolic registry, but do far worse in furthering misogyny and other prejudices.

We had some plane flights as of late so had a chance to do a bit of cultural anthropology, i.e. explore series we may not otherwise check out. It is not surprising why ’s recent post resonated so well. The “Crazy Wife/Ex/GF/Woman” trope is a go to for Taylor Sheridan and team on the Landman series exemplified by Ali Larter’s character. Sigh…

Thankfully I have a partner ( ) who is well read, truly committed, and doesn’t miss a beat. She keeps me thinking too.

Progress will be made. It will be slow, but then it will be extremely fast.

Q2 is quickly coming to a close and (as you’ll see below in our Project Tracker) A LOT has been happening for the ND50 Films Project filmmakers.

It’s a vital time to take stock of where you are, record your data, and get your statistical ducks in a row when going out for financing, crowdfunding, distribution, and press.

WHY DOES DATA MAKE OR BREAK YOU?

For non-dependence, data is the key. The more we know about our projects — our specific audience demo/psychographics (hint: your audience is not “everyone” yet), our films’ TAM/SAM/SOMs, our conversion rates, our audience feedback, etc. — the more we can leverage that data in the market.

Whether it’s to book your theatrical tour, write a grant for post-production funding, or cast a well known actor, the data will set you apart. The sooner you start tracking it, the better your projections and predictions will be.

HOW WILL WE USE YOUR DATA IN ND5O?

As this is a group project, sharing our data with each other will allow us to:

• write a Q2 report you can quote/share with investors and collaborators

• put together small breakout meetups of “Micro Labels” with filmmakers who are in similar points of the process

WHAT IS NONDĒ?

NonDē cinema is non-dependent on the current Hollywood ecosystem, and instead asserts the creative, financial, distribution and all forms of cultural control as the intentional responsibility of the individual team. Collectively, the workers in the NonDē movement leverage collaboration over competition, the sharing of institutional knowledge, and mutual support systems to help amplify both the individual films and a bigger movement that prioritizes the sustainability of the art, artist, audience, and cinema ecosystem.

WHAT IS NONDĒ 50?

It’s a coordinated and organized effort to get 50 NonDē films made in 2026.

WHY DO WE NEED IT?

This is a fundamental question I address in the original essay (below), but the TL;DR version is that our individual films gain more traction and assert more impact when they’re in the context of each other. I look at NonDē as a political movement and the films are the individual races for office. When one of us does better, we all do better.

“hold their feet to the fire!” … Indeed!

Can this be our mission? Rallying cry? Motivating principle?

I don’t know about you, but when things go wrong I go through a familiar cycle. At first I want to flee, particularly if the wrong-doers have indicated they don’t really want me around. But then my blood boils. “How dare they?!!” “They have no right! I am part of this too!!”. I want to fight, and resist. I dig my heels in. I do think change is more possible from the inside.

I wrote resignation letters at the end of the year, my last three years working for Amazon, but I did not send it in until the final year as I held on to the confidence I could do more good in the system than outside it.

What has been happening at CBS News and 60 Minutes makes me want to organize a full boycott of everything associated with Paramount, Skydance, and Oracle. It also makes me wonder what I would do if I was in the midst of such a situation. If I had a high-ranking station, I think I would give it the fight from the inside too initially…

Dec 4th: Deadline: NRDC’s Rewrite the Future $20,000 Fellowship x 3

NRDC’s 2026 Rewrite the Future, in partnership with the Black List, CAA Community + Impact, NBCUniversal, and the Redford Center, invites writers to apply for the NRDC Climate Storytelling Fellowship, now open for submissions.

The annual fellowship encourages climate storytelling by supporting the revision of screenplays or pilots that engage with climate change in a meaningful way, through events, actions, character, emotions, plot, and/or setting.

The fellowship awards three recipients with $20,000 each and six months of mentorship with industry professionals and climate storytelling experts to provide creative support for their original script. At the conclusion of the fellowship, revised scripts will be hosted on the Black List website and may be reviewed for development by prominent studios, agencies, and/or production companies. Writers will retain all rights to their scripts.

There can be more than one movie about a niche topic…

The deep inside part of my heart squealed with delight as I read ’s piece on how they and made the same movie. When filmmakers distress about their idea “already being done” or “already being out there”, it is 1000% an indication to me that their idea is pressing and urgent and they should go forth with verve.

I believe ideas don’t belong to us, but can be channeled through us. I also believe Nana is right and capitalism is selling us the trash lie of artistic competition. If we watch one movie, we can certainly watch a similar one. In fact, every time I finish a film I really like, I go looking for something similar.

Do not believe capitalism, it’s selling something.

Now I can’t unsee it. And it is a beautiful thing. Thank you Sonja!

It is time the film industry caught up with other industries. Standards and interoperability — that’s what we want. That’s what we have to get ASAP.

Sure, it is not as sexy as free money or access to everything anywhere all the time — but it is do-able, practicable, and the kind of achievable improvement that will change everything.

I wish every city, state, and country had their own version of this

I don’t know about you, but I like to daydream what it would be to live in other places, work in other place, and just walk in other places. That’s what we need those home transporters for, but all the bigwigs shifted their spend to large language models instead.

The hardest questions to answer will (oddly enough) give you the most satisfying journey.

I read Emerson and Thoreau in Mrs. Altman’s 10th grade American Lit class and absolutely lost my mind. She added Whitman for good measure just to mess with me. What was so captivating to me about the Transcendentalists was their common audacities to reach for something beyond them. It was as if they were singing a song I somehow knew the words to, but couldn’t quite find the pitch myself yet.

I’m always listening for that pitch, and when I hear it, I know it. That’s how I felt reading ’s post below. I know Ted offers up lots of operational improvements, tactics, strategies, and templates for a healthier cinematic ecosystem, but this post is raw, stirring, and essential before any of those tactics can be applied. The eternal question — who am I and what do I want? — the same one that plagues our characters, is a worthy question. Paradoxically, we may never get to a solid answer, but the wondering itself edifies.

Remember how streaming was supposed to give you access to everything anytime anywhere? That just ain’t so, is it Joe?

When the shows start issuing DVD box sets again, because they know they too will soon be disappeared, that old jig is up and how. Expect what HACKS is now doing to grow more commonplace as the clock ticks forever forward. The good side though is DVDs are better in countless ways than streaming ever was.

To documentary cinema fans and makers, Poitras and Gandbhir are two of the brightest lights, crafting beautiful films about critical topics in inventive ways. They are masters of the form. And true patriots, recognizing all that we could be and all we have to avoid. They are fearless. Thankfully they are not alone in speaking up.

Journalists, documentary filmmakers, and the like now have their own #BlockTheMerger letter and they are telling it like it is.

Real respect for WGA East: they encourage all members to sign the BlockTheMerger petition.

“Ellison and Weiss at the helm of CBS News has led to a further erosion in the integrity of the free press. Wow. Gotta love Colbert. He rolls with it. And boy to I miss the days of public access media. And how great if he visited ALL public media stations! And I promise: plenty of laughs.

And yes, that is Jack White as music director. Give this guy a show too please.

The show also reminds up of why we all must speak up and support the issues that matter to us. CBS initially served a take down notice to the Monroe, MI’s public media but know what happened? Yup… public outcry. The people resisted. And then they won.

The annual fellowship encourages climate storytelling by supporting the revision of screenplays or pilots that engage with climate change in a meaningful way, through events, actions, character, emotions, plot, and/or setting.

The fellowship awards three recipients with $20,000 each and six months of mentorship with industry professionals and climate storytelling experts to provide creative support for their original script. At the conclusion of the fellowship, revised scripts will be hosted on the Black List website and may be reviewed for development by prominent studios, agencies, and/or production companies. Writers will retain all rights to their scripts.

Filmmaker Profile Of The Month? Boots Riley in The New Yorker!

Why doesn’t America have more places to go to find and discover new things? Or does it? Why doesn’t America have more places that highlights our favorite artists and people? Or does it? I am glad we still have The New Yorker. And I am glad we have Boots Riley. But yeah… I also wish we had a whole lot more of the sort that they are. Maybe we do… And maybe we can find new ways to create them?

I’ve probably subscribed to The New Yorker now for about thirty years. I don’t get to read it as much as I would like. Put down that screen, pal, and go deepdeepdeep into the corners of your mind!

Do you practice lucid dreaming? Why not? It is how I learned to fold shirts and move many things to a better order. But beyond such productive activities, it is the land where the rules no longer apply — it is where we all can fly. It is the land where I can truly find comfort and nestle in a cocoon of joy.

I love daydreaming so much, I see no reason to confine it to the waking hours. When you know there is a place you like to dwell, you can return to it again and again with a little practice, and that’s a practice that is catching on.

Lucid dreaming has now gone mainstream! Who’d thunk it? But when the NYTimes is writing about it, you know it has jumped out of the margins.

Let’s chat data.

One of the big mandates in the NonDē 50 Films Project is for filmmakers to collect their own data and share it with the group. Data collection can be as simple as tracking measurable statistics or as complicated as research design.

But the power of data collection in a community like ND50 is that we can share that data and extrapolate (some better) meaning from it when we do.

This kind of knowledge sharing means we don’t need to reinvent the wheel and we can offer our films’ backers sturdier figures based on reality instead of vibes. This is one way we can create a truly sustainable future.

“Here’s the contradiction that we all know but are too afraid to pursue: Going direct to the audience, the “creator” route, gives you the all important data. Followers, emails, reach, views, campaign results, revenue: it goes straight back to the person who made the content.”

NonDē cinema is non-dependent on the current Hollywood ecosystem, and instead asserts the creative, financial, distribution and all forms of cultural control as the intentional responsibility of the individual team. Collectively, the workers in the NonDē movement leverage collaboration over competition, the sharing of institutional knowledge, and mutual support systems to help amplify both the individual films and a bigger movement that prioritizes the sustainability of the art, artist, audience, and cinema ecosystem.

WHAT IS NONDĒ 50?

It’s a coordinated and organized effort to get 50 NonDē films made in 2026.

WHY DO WE NEED IT?

This is a fundamental question I address in the original essay (below), but the TL;DR version is that our individual films gain more traction and assert more impact when they’re in the context of each other. I look at NonDē as a political movement and the films are the individual races for office. When one of us does better, we all do better.

There’s a cultural shift happening and you can see it in all the little stories around the world. One of those stories is from Germany, where filmmakers are resurrecting the Dogma movement. I highly recommend reading the 10 points in their “Vow of Chastity” in this article.

Paramount already had JUNK credit status and are getting downgraded further — how can they say the merger makes sense? They can’t. They must have secondary motives…

“S&P Global Ratings already has placed Paramount Skydance‘s credit rating in junk-status territory — indicating that the media conglomerate’s debt securities are considered speculative-grade. But if and when Paramount completes its megadeal for Warner Bros. Discovery, the credit-rating firm will take it down another notch.”

Yikes, yikes, and double yikes! This is not going to end well for anyone if we allow it to continue down this road towards further consolidation.

Let’s Make it a Letterboxd Summer

By now you’ve probably heard about ’s campaign for us (as in you, as in me) to buy Letterboxd. With as an advisor, and a wicked smart team of collaborators like , , , and at the ready, a massive campaign for Intrinsic Entertainment (a public benefit corporation) to purchase the beloved film app with a mix of angel investing, crowdinvesting, and yes, crowdfunding is set to make an industry earthquake (positive!) this summer. That means, when they buy Letterboxd, they must (as in legally) answer to the stakeholders (everyone who invested as little as $4), not shareholders.

Why does something like this matter to filmmakers like us? Sure, we love Letterboxd. Sure, we love democracy. Sure, we hate enshitification. But there’s more going on here.

Elizabeth has done the work for 15 years in this space. She’s partnered with Harvard on developing the legal and entity structures. She’s not throwing this together on a whim. The big headline here is that this kind of earth-quaking move is what can happen when the infrastructure of a cinematic ecosystem (as has mentioned from time to time!) starts coming together. This is the kind of move you can make when the structures are there to support it.

It may not always feel like we’re building toward anything real. But trust, the impossible is becoming inevitable. Just see for yourself:

The ethics (and finances) of modern collaboration

It’s easy to absorb the dominant narrative of capitalism — that professional relationships are there to use each other and exploit each other and compete.

We hear phrases slung around like “market value” and “dog eat dog” to understand the world around us, so when someone expresses they’re interested in doing unpaid or low-paid labor on a micro-budget film set, it can easily be interpreted through that harsh, rigid, exploitative lens of hypercapitalistic thinking.

But is offering a VITAL reframe. If we don’t find a way to collaborate with each other, share ownership, and keep the costs low so we can continue to iterate and grow as filmmakers, then who is left to make the films? Well, not working class folks, that’s for sure. And what’s more than this, perhaps this unpaid labor contributes successfully to the much needed, very valuable union labor that is also essential to our ecosystem. It’s not one or the other. It’s both.

This, imho, is an essential read this week.

Some people decide they want to be a director because they have a vision or a film they want to make, some people want to be a director because they want all the credit for a film, and some want to be one because they like having control over things. Whatever the reason, most revolve around the glorious parts of directing, not the emotional and mental toll it can take.
