Are you also feeling the soil in your heartland loosen and new life spouting?

I’m writing to you from my hometown Hangzhou. It’s been 7 years since I came back to China, and the first time in 14 years that I return without a clear date to go back to the United States. My body has been asking for a return and a base in Asia for a long time, and I finally answered.

My parents left my room almost exactly the way I left it.

Stepping into it feels like entering a time portal, an archive of my teenager self: letters I exchanged with my internet friends, books and CDs I saved up for, clothes that reflected my baby queer taste…

The first few days, I felt overwhelmed.

I opened drawers, sorted through layers of a past life, throwing away bags and bags of things that no longer fit who I am now.
I have to sit with a simple, aching truth:

I miss this baby so much,
but I’m no longer her.

Maybe loving her now means both separating and reuniting at the same time.

With the energy of spring equinox and new moon in Pisces, I call in the courage to dig into my roots, clear out old soil, and repot into new soil.

Here are some seeds for us to stay curious between soils:

I am breaking out of my comfort zone, labels and titles, not to become no one, but to become part of something bigger.

I am opening this space a bit more, not just to share finished thoughts, but to be in process together.

i felt my body clicked into place on solstice during my 35 bday celebration on the roof of my home, laughing, appreciating everyone around me. the first bday wish that came to me is keeping community alive.

3 flights and 40 hours on the road, I’m back home in Brooklyn from my 7-month trip in Asia!

❤️ SEEDS:

🌱 I root into the truth that my worth is not measured by numbers. I tend to my vision with love and trust. Even if it blooms slowly, it is blooming.

🌱 I allow my past identities to soften and fall away. I am becoming more myself each day.

🌱 My courage is in the showing up. My power is in the sharing. My radiance doesn’t need to be earned. It’s already here.

I choose change

This time last year, I had also just returned from a 6-month Asia homecoming. I was still integrating a message I received on a sacred mountain in Taiwan:

Daily bliss is possible.
Abundance is our birthright.
We don’t have to return to lives that shrink us.
I am committed to practicing and affirming my imagniation of what a good life can be for me and my tribe.

Now, it’s my second year of living like a walking tree—rooted in New York, nomadic in Asia.
It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been full of clarity.
I’ve never felt more aligned.

I floated in the ocean under a full moon in Honolulu.
Watched the sunset over volcano park and the most expansive Milky Way on Big Island.
Marched in Taipei Pride, queering the steps of City Hall.
Danced underwater in Kending with water creatures.
Took a riverboat to a golden Buddha temple in Bangkok.
Soaked in a milk bath by the sea in Hua Hin.
Cleansed in natural hot springs at a farm retreat in Chiang Dao.
Shared work with Chinese queer diasporic artists in Chiang Mai.
Deepend relationships with my family and slowed down together.
Lived in a home in Hanoi with my birthday as the door code.
Practiced somatic portraits with queer kin in Huế, Vietnam.
Visted alternative communities and spaces across oceans
….

So many portals.
So much expansion.
None of this would’ve happened if I didn’t choose change—
and say yes to the unknown.

Change is scary.
Growth is uncomfortable.
But again and again, I’ve learned this:

• You deserve to be gently held while you transform.

• You deserve to invest in your self-love and healing even when you’re still figuring it out.

• You deserve to play with your creativity even if it’s not for business.

• What you give yourself now will echo for years.

• There is magic on the other side.

I’m writing to you from Hue, Vietnam. Here for the AirHue artist residency. My friend shared this vision with me last year and now they have a whole space and team. It’s so inspiring to witness people bring visions to life.

If you read my last letter "Rejection as sacred detour", I have good news! I got my U.S. visa in Hanoi and I will be back to New York on 5/1. If you are in New York, let’s hang out!

This Sunday brings the Taurus new moon. It’s an invitation to root into pleasure, value, and long-term devotion. I’m asking myself: what am I willing to commit to, even when it's scary? What does it mean to truly receive and to believe I’m worthy of what I desire, even before it arrives?

❤️ SEEDS:

🌱 We deserve revolutionary love.

🌱 We are the exact person someone is looking for. We offer the exact gift that brings them joy. Who we are looking for is also looking for us.

🌱 We are not gathering by chance. We are remembering by design.

🚫 What if the fear of being seen is actually the fear of your power?

We’ve learnt that power could be abusive.
We are taught that standing out can be dangerous.
We’re scared our fullness might push people away.
We carry shame like it’s our skin.

But have you considered the ripple effect of you stepping into your power?
What if could help someone else come home to theirs?
Shame is not a reflection of our truth.
It’s the residue of someone else’s fear living inside of us.

I’ve lived most of my life in the in-between.
In-between genders and cultures.
In-between being “authentic” and being “acceptable”.

It means we are no longer hiding.
And when we’re no longer hiding,
we have to risk being loved.
For real. As we are.

I’m writing to you from a beautiful vintage coffee shop in Hanoi, Vietnam. Surprise!

This time I added an audio version of me reading the letter. Hope to add some warmth to this digital space. It’s been raining here so the background is rain. :)

Yesterday was Qingming Festival (Tomb Sweeping Day) when Chinese families visit ancestral graves, offer food and burn joss paper to honor our ancestors. It is a threshold moment to tend to our roots, clear what’s no longer needed and make space for renewal. Here are some seeds for us to navigate changes with blessings from our lineages.

❤️ SEEDS:

🌱 Rejection is redirection. It creates space for divine alignment. The revolution is patient.

🌱 My creativity is not bound by systems, timelines or approval. I am brave enough to walk through this portal of evolution.

🌱 I am the living prayer of those who came before me. I carry generations of resilience in my body. My ancestors walk with me.

🚫 REJECTION AS REDIRECTION

I’ve been sitting with rejection lately.

With an approved and still valid O-1 visa petition, I got rejected unexpectedly during visa interview in Taipei’s US embassy last month. I have been in a 7-year relationship with this “alien with extraordinary ability” O-1 visa that allows me to work and live in the United States. It’s not the first time I've felt the message “you don’t belong here“ or “you are not enough” during my 13-year immigration journey.

However, this time, I felt calm. Nothing can shake my inherent belonging and my self-worth anymore. I am not trying to assimilate or gain approval from a system that’s never built for people like me anymore. I am not afraid anymore. I’m applying because of love.

I’m going to re-apply here in Hanoi in two days. Wish me luck <3

I’m learning:

• Rejection is redirection. It’s a sacred detour. It could be the universe carving out a more aligned timeline that you dare not to choose for yourself.

• Rejection cracks the ego. It humbles you. It reminds you that belonging isn’t given by gatekeepers. Instead, it’s cultivated within, through ancestral memory, community care and creative defiance.

• Rejection burns, but this heat clears the way for truth. It invites you to deepen your devotion to what truly matters.

Many people are going through this kind of trial. In fact, this pain of migration and colonization has been rippling all over the world through generations.

wrote in Visa Rejected: Why India Denied my Entry: “Visas function first and foremost as political screening mechanisms: designed to scrutinize and filter who and what moves into the nation-state’s sociospatial domain.”

In this coffee shop, I came across a series of old letters written in the year I was born. A daughter writing to her mother, between Hong Kong, Taiwan and Vietman. Reading the worries about visa, money, work, and family from another generation of immigrants, I felt seen and deeply moved. I wonder where they are now.

In everything I create, I think I am building portals like this, where personal history interweaves with collective memory, where the past meets the present and the future.

Despite all the challenges, I’m grateful for my years in the United States. I went there with a dream to see a bigger world, to pursue freedom of expression and to be a proud queer artist. I went as a creatively repressed and sexually closeted Chinese baby and came out as a culturally mixed creative alien and a walking rainbow flag haha 🏳️‍🌈

I witnessed and participated in a variety of intergenerational, cross-disciplinary grassroots collective building that forever changed me. I still carry the strength and inspiration I got from the movement and dedicate my work to the brave souls who tirelessly build towards a more just, respectful and peaceful world. The ghosts of my personal history and collective desires are invisible hands steering me toward a diverse loving queer utopia no matter where I am.

💌 A Sacred Shift in Timing! MML Postponed till May

This season of reflection, rejection, and redirection is also reshaping my plans for Multimedia Love Letter.

After listening to my heart, body and spirit, to the feedback from the community, I’ve decided to postpone the start of Multimedia Love Letter creative somatic retreat to Sunday, May 4, 2025.

It will mark the 立夏 (Lìxià), the beginning of summer when Yang rises, fire returns, and life begins to blossom outward again. It feels like the right portal to begin this creative rebirth together.

It will also be 青年节 (Youth Day) in China, which commemorates the May Fourth Movement — a student-led cultural and political uprising rooted in rejecting colonial domination and envisioning a new future.

By then, I hope to be back home in Sunset Park, New York.

By then, I hope to welcome those of you who feel the call to join me on this journey to return home to your essence.

Hope to use this month as a necessary pause to regather, root deeper, and rise stronger.

hello from taipei! happy solstice! the sun stands still. a portal of transition, a threshold between what was and what’s to come. solstice reminds us: change is inevitable, but our light endures. even in uncertainty, something within us knows the way.

I’m writing to you from Chiang Mai again. Spring is here. The flowers suddenly start to bloom!

I realized I’m on the path of helping people to be truly SEEN, because that’s my deepest fear and that’s the portal I’ve been called to walk through over and over 👁️

Our bodies have memories. Many of us are conditioned to hide parts of ourselves to survive. But this time calls us to step into our power so we can build the world we can thrive together! 💐

🔮 Portraits as Portals

Last summer I collaborated with @aaartsalliance to offer free portraits for queer and trans AAPI artists, hoping to help embody their spirits and usher in their next phase of their career. I used the somatic portrait process I’ve been developing over the years as a ritual to invite folks to return to themselves and shine their unique light.

We started with somatic grounding exercise to feel present in our bodies. Then, I invited them to visualize their future self and embody that version.

So excited to see these images published recently alongside my process and artists’ hope to share with the community! thank u @justineraelee for the invite, @maihousestudio for the space and @stephaniehshih for the assistance! thank u all the artists for showing up with such open heart and your brilliance!

i'm writing to you from Kathmandu, Nepal. i woke up to an earthquake. i’m fine and grateful to be alive. hope you are healthy and safe in your corner of the world.

i came here for ILGA (International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association) Asia conference. this last week i met people from everywhere trying to uplift queer voices and empower each other to build a world of freedom and equality. the present reality of our world village right now is dire, but the resilience and solidarity continue to guide the way. i feel the ache to recenter love, to belong, to build something bigger than myself with others. are you feeling that?

it happened to be Maha Shivratri Celebrations, reminding us to overcome darkness and ignorance. i went to Pashupatinath Temple, which is also known for its nightly death ritual of cremation. people cry and people dance. i’m learning to honor and maybe even celebrate death as part of life's cycle.

* During the Vigil Night of Shiva, Mahashivaratri, we are brought to the moment of interval between destruction and regeneration;it symbolizes the night when we must contemplate on that which watches the growth out of the decay. 
During Mahashivaratri we have to be alone with our sword, the Shiva out of us. We have to look behind and before, to see what evil needs eradicating from our heart, what growth of virtue we need to encourage. Shiva is not only outside of us but within us.To unite ourselves with the One Selfis to recognize the Shiva in us.

under this new moon in pisces and the rare alignment of seven planets, i’m setting intentions for how i want to be in relationship—with myself, with others, with resources and unseen forces that guide me.

🌱 i am a global citizen. i call in soul tribes who see me beyond labels and borders, holding each other in love, creativity, and mutual care.

🌱 i express my soul’s essence freely with my presence. it’s a powerful force connecting to the source of abundance.

🍃 how does your body find home in movement?

at the beginning of this year, i collaborated with other Chinese diaspora queer artists on a show called “SPIRAL TACTICS” in chiang mai’s Some Space Gallery. even though we are spread out worldwide, the question “how does your body find home in movement?” united us.

as written in our exhibition statement, “Spiral Tactics embodies this rhythm: a soft yet powerful movement that rejects linearity, embracing detours, pauses, and rituals as strategies for survival and belonging. The body becomes both a site of vulnerability and a vessel for transformation, carrying the weight of past journeys while gesturing toward futures still unfolding.”

i used this time to reflect on my last 9 years’ using creative practice to locate and embody my most authentic self in relationship to the community and land.

i designed a bedroom space with posters of asian queer folks from “liminal space”, an old tv showing my coming out video, a table with a mini tv showing my experimental self portrait project “idareu2feel radio” during covid, a polaroid album to showcase the recent “i love you but i have to leave now” and a notebook inviting visitors to draw their feelings, confess their secrets and cast spells for future.

this is dedicated to my 10-year-old self who thought they had to hide their desire till they die, to my family who chose to support me despite initial confusion, to the queer folks who shine their light brightly in the dark, to diaporic birds who are relentless in finding the right soil to thrive, to the ancestors and future generations who are living through me right now.

in my 13 years of migration journey, i’ve lived in countless homes. when stripped to the bare, my body is my ultimate home and creativity is my driving force in the current between love and rage.

when i flip through the guestbook, i was moved to tears. i felt such a strong connection with all the emotions expressed by anonymous visitors who interacted with my inner temple. i’m not alone. you are not alone. we are in this together.

“Liminal Space” is currently on view @ Griffin Museum’s show “Nuclear family” with other queer artists. in the recent interview with the museum, i talked about my process and my diasporic and nomadic roots:

Growing up in a mainstream society that often tells us we don’t belong can create a somatic memory of fear around being seen. I’ve experienced this myself—I’ve frozen in front of the camera—so I understand how vulnerable it can feel. When I’m behind the camera, I try my best to create a safe environment where people can express their authentic selves. - Mengwen Cao

I missed you! How have you been? I’m writing to you from my nest in Chiang Mai. I’ve been waking up with roosters and birds in the neighborhood and settling into nature’s rhythm.

dear m,

last year you called in actions, experiments, new beginnings, and aligned collaborations and you did it. so proud of you! you had many heart moments when you felt alive and whole. you stopped waiting and started experiencing the full flavor of being alive. the parts of you that died in restrictive systems are remembering how to be wild again.

15 places in 3 countries, you got intimate with ocean, forests, farmland, temples, small towns and cities in the east and west. you are wayfinding and worldbuilding towards a future where you and your loved ones can safely thrive.

in january, you went on a road trip in thailand with your family after 4+ years of separation. you cried for hours after sending them off, but your heart was left filled with unconditional love. family does not come without conflicts or disagreements. but real love challenges you to hold differences with compassion. it’s a warm sweater that you repair over and over.

in february, you celebrated lunar new year with friends in chiang mai. you launched this newsletter, a cyber garden where you plant seeds during new moon/full moon for personal and collective transformation. over the last year you sent out 13 heartfelt letters to your internet friends.

in march, you learned thai massage alongside people from all over the world, carrying the legacy of body care forward. you gave an artist talk on image-making as a tender language of collaboration @ nowhere bookstore, bringing tears to strangers as they gazed into each other’s eyes with love. then, you traveled solo to taiwan—studied reiki and sound healing with a powerful soul in taipei, cleansed your heart in heartland, and found refuge with a spiritual seed sister by the clearest ocean in taitung.

in april, you returned to new york to a rocky, heavy start. you reconnected with loved ones, listening to their heartbeats—no one seemed to be doing well. during the solar eclipse, you remembered: the answers are within. you came here with light to share.

in may, the sunset and your own gaze healed you, so you wanted to share that energy with others. you officially opened your home for sunset studio somatic portraits, weaving together the healing tools you gathered along the way. through massage, spirituality, and somatic coaching, you guide people back to their inner authority and inherent power.

then came june, your birthday month. you graduated from the sex education program at the school for poetic computation with a series of steamy asian erotic fever dreams, co-created with midjourney AI. you held a queering wealth workshop with your cosmic sibling , exploring new ways to redefine abundance and resource-sharing within community.

your somatic portrait offering was in full bloom—watching people come alive in their sessions felt deeply rewarding.

to dream up new possibilities for collective abundance, you invited friends to bring their offerings / 摆地摊 to your birthday party. your community spontaneously lifting you up was the most affirming way to begin 34. you also witnessed the hottest, most radical queer performance and erotic party—mouth wide open, you fell back in love with new york and its magnetic pull for the most creative people you’ve ever met.

july began with a bday trip to Neptune town with stella. you buried yourself in the sand, feeling the peace of surrender—not in a suicidal way, but in deep acceptance of life’s cycles. as you soaked in the sun, you heard your parents' voices: “it’s our first time being parents too.” a reminder that we are all just doing our best to love and carry life forward. you wrote a love letter to yourself, a quiet foreshadowing of the multimedia love retreat you would hold in four months. july ended in stillness—recovering from covid at home, letting your body fully rest, diving into somatic coaching, and returning to your deepest desires.

in august, you designed and launched your sunset studio website, sending a digital signal to the world, welcoming those in-between to be witnessed into their ideal future selves. you wrapped the first alchemy portrait (an in-depth 2-month process of transformation that combines somatic coaching and portrait making) with Shen Lu. you brought the somatic portrait process to photograph 9 AAPI quer artists in collaboration with Asian American Art Alliance and Mai house. seeing them shine, reminding them of their brilliance beyond mainstream conditioning, filled you with purpose. they told you how much your work meant to them, how life-changing it was. take it in, baby. you knew how to hold space for them because you knew, firsthand, what it felt like to go unseen. now, you are powerful enough to create new structures.

in september, you began saying goodbye as you prepared for your asia homecoming trip. you won a prize with polaroid and magnum photos—chosen from over 2,000 submissions. you used this moment to create farewell rituals with friends and family, turning grief into hope by inviting them to cast affirmations for the future. you had the most beautiful alchemy portrait session with recognized each other as time travelers on light-filled missions. in these moments, you felt it deeply—you are exactly where you’re meant to be.

on mid autumn festival, you flew to hawaii and stepped into a new chapter. the ocean held you with ease, reminding you that you didn’t have to try so hard to stay afloat. you touched the pulse of the earth and finally understood—you could just be. perfection was never the goal. love was never something to earn. by simply being yourself—imperfect, raw, and whole—you tuned into the frequency of love.

in october, you went to aftersunset somatic residency on the big island of hawaii, welcomed by your lovely host jessica, who is also your amerta movement teacher. you felt creatively pregnant, carrying something big inside you, but anxiety clouded your arrival. yet, through movement and loving witness, you surrendered to the process—and finally, you delivered the baby Multimedia Love Letter Creative Retreat.

there were many moments when you wanted to give up. all the toxic stories about money and business and self-doubt paralyzed you. but you trusted your body’s wisdom and released this medicine cultivated over years of your embodied experience. you learned that selling doesn’t have to be cringy. instead, it is a bridge for real connection. thanks and for modeling spirit-led, heart-led authentic business.

you showed up fully and offered two free workshops as teasers for the official 9-week program: somatic self-portrait and somatic virtual presence. the community’s response reminded you that love is both giving and receiving. an aligned business nourishes you, not drains you.

before leaving hawaii, a shaman gave you a lomi lomi massage and asked: have you truly sucked the mango pit? so you went to taiwan and fully embraced life. you were immersed in queer joy at taipei pride and returned to your reiki teacher for level 2 training.

in november, you and your girlfriend arrived in kenting on a stormy night and began facilitating the 9-week Multimedia Love Letter retreat. it became a creative ritual, and waking up at 4-5am every monday was a challenge for a night owl, but you always left feeling affirmed.

next, you went to thailand. you lived on a river in bangkok, visiting temples by boat. your parents grew up near a similar canal. your airbnb hosts treated you like family, sharing local food from their neighbors. you met a grandpa who asked: would you like to sing a song? you sang Imagine together.

in hua hin, you celebrated your girlfriend’s birthday, grateful for someone who embraces life’s sweetness and never hesitates to take on adventures.

in november, you went to chiang dao for a mind-body-soul art retreat at Yidan’s farm. immersed in nature, you eco-printed with flowers, made clay sculptures, drew feelings, harvested rice, planted seeds, bathed in the forest, climbed trees, tried indigo dyeing, and experienced effortless healing. you facilitated a somatic portrait session where hearts opened and hugs flowed.

in december, you returned to chiang mai, rented a pool house, and began nesting. you wrapped up the Multimedia Love Letter retreat and created a small virtual garden to host everyone’s work.

what a trip!

best wishes for you as you move through 2025 snake year. keep tending your inner and outer garden. it’s a long game. i love you.

Hello from Hua Hin, Thailand!

I hope this letter finds you soaking in the soft glow of the Full Moon in Taurus. I find myself reflecting on the whirlwind of my travels. It’s been two months on the road now—three countries, three languages, six cities, and over ten homes. Constant movement has been a profound teacher in shedding and transformation. Amidst all this beautiful chaos, how can we find ways to love life, even when things seem upside down?

This moon is all about feeling alive in the here and now. Are you letting the good things come your way easily? Or do you find yourself struggling to prove your worth and force things to happen? It's a beautiful time to say goodbye to old habits that hold you back, to feel your feet on the ground, and to receive the world’s gifts with open arms.

🍃I love you, but I have to leave now

Before I left New York this September temporarily for the next chapter of my life, I felt a big wave of anxiety.

Blessed, I was selected as one of 10 winners from over 2000 submissions through the ‘Real Life is Not Black and White’ open call with @polaroid & @magnumphotos. I was gifted a Polaroid I-2 and black and white films. I used this opportunity to create a ritual that honors the people and places that have shaped me. Five photos from this project was shown at @parisphotofair from November 7-10, 2024.

Saying goodbye has always been difficult for me, but this project is an attempt to face that challenge head-on, to embrace the beauty and pain that comes with transition.

As part of the Chinese diaspora, I've constantly navigated belonging, and this farewell carries both grief and love - a testament to the connections I've built.

Through collaborative portraits, I invited friends and family to visualize their future selves and write affirmations for our collective future.

These wisdoms feel like an anchor in uncertain times. By facing the act of saying goodbye through these shared, intimate moments, I've realized that perhaps it isn't as scary as it seems.

Grief is part of love's cycle.

Love is here no matter where we are physically.

🧑‍🌾 Art & Healing Retreat

Our Multimedia Love Letter virtual creative retreat, now two weeks in, is blossoming beautifully. We are a group of hearts strong, weaving a tapestry of support and creativity that speaks to the core of why we gather: to create spaces where we can truly be ourselves, learn from each other, and grow together. This emerging community is a microcosm of the world I wish to inhabit—a space intentionally built for connection and mutual understanding. The recent US election has cast a shadow over this vision, with results that are more than disheartening. The re-election of Trump has sent ripples of concern through spaces occupied by those of us who live in the margins—queer, immigrant, perpetually between worlds. This has only deepened my resolve to not just find but to actively create environments that are safe, nurturing, and inclusive. Environments where people like us don’t just survive, but thrive.

My next stop is Yidan’s farm in Chiang Dao for an art and healing retreat, a sanctuary for those seeking balance in life. It will be a week-long of activities like yoga, breathwork, forest bathing, hot spring, eco-printing, bamboo weaving, aroma oil healing and art making! Can’t wait!!! I am so honored to join the team. I will be leading a somatic portrait workshop.

What’s outside your window right now? From where I’m currently in Kenting, Taiwan, it’s Typhoon Kong-Rey making its powerful presence known. Yes I’m back in Asia.

My reiki teacher in Taiwan said I reminded her of hummingbirds that travel from Brazil to Canada each year to get the nectar they need to survive. They have strong inner conviction and trust all will be will. I have to answer the calling from my heart.

Traveling is always humbling. When you’re moving through a place where no one knows your name, who are you at your core? What stories do you tell about yourself when no one else is there to confirm or deny them? How are you building your relationships on the way? Travel brings us back to my essence, a presence stripped of labels and roles.

Welcome to the mysterious and transformative energies of the New Moon in Scorpio. In many cultures, this time is viewed as a period when spirits draw near, reminding us of the thin veil between life and death. Death is a stern reminder that we are all have limited time on this earth. Are we savoring the juice of our life now? Are we living passionately now? How can we contribute to our collective dream?

🔮 Sharing a roadmap I wish I had

Lately, I’ve been feeling pregnant. I know I’m giving birth to a new life.

I realize I’ve been cultivating a creative retreat for a long time and I want to invite you to join a 9-week creative retreat Multimedia Love Letter with me!

It’s a roadmap I wish I had when I first started this journey of self-discovery and creating connections through multimedia storytelling.

Creativity healed me and is continuously healing me. It helps me alchemize my shame and pain into power and connection. It helps me see light and share nuance when shadows feel overwhelming.

In 2016, when I was struggling with accepting my queer identity, I made a video letter and came out to my parents via Facetime. “Here We Are”.

In 2017, I felt stuck in-between two cultures. Every time I went back to China, people would say “You are too American!“ But people in the States would say “You are too Chinese!” So I photographed and interviewed eight Asian transracial adoptees growing up in white families to explore the nuance of navigating the in-between space of race and culture. You can check out the project “I Stand Between“.

Since 2015, I moved to New York in search of a queer people of color community. I found it through creating collaborative portraits in the project “Liminal Space”.

During the Pandemic, I finally turned the tender gaze back to myself and found my true self through making experimental self-portraits called IDareU2Feel Radio.

The last few years I started listening more to the wisdom of our body and spirit. I’ve developed a process to combine somatic coaching with multimedia storytelling and build Sunset Studio to help people realize the future they want is already here.

As we step away from the chaos and into a space of stillness, this celestial moment offers us a chance to reconnect with our innermost truths and rejuvenate our strength and integrity. Do we have any areas of self-betrayal? It’s a powerful time to recenter, reassess our moral compass, and commit to living in full integrity.

🔮 ALCHEMY TURNS PAIN INTO POWER

The sun began its descent, casting a golden glow over Sunset Park. It was the perfect backdrop for my latest Alchemy Portrait session with a dear friend Shen Lu.

As the light faded and the colors of the sky deepened, I knew I was witnessing something truly special.

I asked her if there was a soundtrack for this photoshoot, what would it be? She said: "Splendor in the Grass by Pink Martini".

We met in our late 20s in New York as two migrant dreamers fighting for freedom and expression. Over the years, we've witnessed each other hustle in this big city, tell heart-felt stories, navigate a foreign land and try to find belonging.

Super proud of her for all her achievements over the years. Recently she finally got her green card via EB-1 （I always find it funny that the legal name for this visa is called Alien with Extraordinary Ability）! Hope she is enjoying the light after this grueling immigration process. She deserves a big celebration!

This session was unique for another reason.

It wasn't just about capturing a beautiful image. It was about capturing a glow of self-love and transformation after deep inner work.

Through Alchemy Portraits, a unique combination of body work, somatic coaching and photography, we delved deep into the essence of her being.

During our somatic coaching sessions, we revisited old wounds, gave comfort to the wounded child within, faced reality head-on, and envisioned a future self filled with self-love and confidence. The photo session was a chance to embody this new version yearning to be seen.

It was a process of alchemy, turning pain into beauty, fear into courage.

And as I clicked the shutter, I could see the transformation happening before my eyes. The light danced around her, illuminating her in a way that only the setting sun could. She radiated a glow of self-love and acceptance that was truly breathtaking.

It's moments like these that remind me why I love what I do. To witness someone stepping into their own light, being seen and loved for who they truly are, is a gift beyond words.

To transform, are you ready to sacrifice your doubts, insecurity and low self-worth?

Bye, "I'm not good enough!"

Bye, "I can't pull this off!"

Bye, "I want to hide."

Thank them for being a friend for so long.

Thank them for protecting us for so long.

They can rest now.

In her love letter to her self, she wrote,

"You are learning and growing, however painful it is. it’s ok to be insecure and it’s ok to make mistakes. No matter what you do, you are worthy and deserve love. I'm so excited to see you on the healing journey. I will always love you unconditionally and be there for you. "

Here's to growing pains.

Here's to holding grief and moving on.

Here's to chasing the light, both outside and within, and truly seeing the beauty that lies in all of us!

• I found my home a pair of sweet caretakers while I’m away in Hawaii & beyond! The way they loved the place as much as I do gives me peace of mind. Thank you to those who helped spread the word! When I moved here two years ago, I envisioned creating a creative sanctuary and cozy home for big-hearted people to find healing in this big busy city. It’s a place for migratory birds like me who crave a sense of comfort after weathering storms. It’s a playground to remember your desire and appreciate beauty. Hope it keeps growing ~

• I got to hang out with some tattoo artists experimenting with new ways of space making and community building.

  “We visually decorate the entire shop together,” Sklaw says. “We try to keep it super warm and super inviting. I think we really go for this idea that you should have stuff to look at while you're getting a tattoo, because it hurts.”

Happy Super Full Moon in Aquarius today! It’s a time known for embracing your differences, taking self-trust to the next level. Do you dare to make up your life in any way you want? I moved to Sunset Park in the Summer 2022, the 10th year I left home in China to find belonging in a foreign land.

When I left, I never thought I would be gone for so long.

I’ve since remembered another rhythm of life. I slowly recovered a deeper connection with my body free from the “marginalized/othered“ narrative. I felt safe again to dream a fuller life. I made my home a sanctuary for healing and creativity.

Last year before leaving New York to Thailand, Tony invited me to a panel at New York Culture Salon to launch his podcast Planet Speakeasey with The Initium. We discuss our experience of seemingly moving back to a small town in China after fighting for the “American Dream“ for so long. The video is out if you are interested in listening! 我们掏心掏肺了！

Sunset Park is a home that makes us free to leave again.

As an immigrant, finding a place that feels like 'home' can be both a challenge and a blessing. Sunset Park has been that for me—a blend of familiar and new, a place where different worlds coalesce into something resembling home.

Today is harvest day!

Secretly, I love making websites. I think of it as a digital collage and space-making. I treat my websites as an expansion of my physical self. They are my digital gardens where I send data signals to connect with myself and the world.

I started re-reading <All About Love> by Bell Hooks. THIS DEEPLY RESONATES!

"Were we, collectively, to demand that our mass media portray images that reflect love's reality, it would happen. 

This change would radically alter our culture... 

The mass media dwells on and perpetuates an ethic of domination and violence because our image makers have more intimate knowledge of those realities than they have the realities of love. 

We all know what violence looks like. All scholarship in the field of cultural studies focusing on a critical analysis of the mass media, whether pro or con, indicates that images of violence, particularly those that involve action and gore, capture the attention of viewers more than still, peaceful images. The small groups of people who produce most of the images we see in this culture have heretofore shown no interest in learning how to represent images of love in ways that will capture and stir our cultural imagination and hold our attention. If the work they did was informed by a love ethnic, they would consider it important to think critically about the images they create. And that would mean thinking about the impact of these images, the way they shape culture and inform how we think and act in everyday life.....

i’m writing to you fresh out of recovery from covid. my body once again reminded me who’s the priority. hope you are also taking care! i’m grateful for this period of rest and regeneration.

  • indulge in juicy art: i got into a research blackhole of queer diaspora art & asian queer tv shows. frankly the asian queer art and media landscape was quite bleak when i was growing up. there’s still lots of gap to fill. seeing everyone’s creation and evolution refueled hope in me to bloom into my own shape in this collective garden.

I’ve been wanting to write to you, but life just kept lifing. how have you been?

Summer has truly kicked in here in New York. I had my bday on 6/23! I am a solstice and cusp baby, surrendering to the liminal nature of my being.

I’m still coming down from the birthday celebration high! I felt so loved and held by myself, my people, and the nature itself!

The recent cancer new moon asked us to evaluate our relationship with giving and receiving love. What intention did you seed?

🌱 I celebrate my vulnerability as a gateway to genuine intimacy and stronger relationships.

❤️ Sunset Studio updates

Last month I kept delving into the intersection of photography and somatic coaching.

Besides home studio sessions, I developed a longer flow called “Alchemy portraits” that prepares the portrait session with four somatic coaching sessions to heal the past, face the present and call in the future.

I just wrapped up an amazing journey with Shen Lu, a talented journalist, writer and chef. We’ve known each other for years and went through many challenges together. She’s strong and wise, but self-love has always been difficult. During the photoshoot, I kept hearing her saying “I love myself! I am so beautiful!“ It felt soooooo rewarding to see your friend shine and bloom!

Last month I kinda went back to school. Just this time I’m creating my own curriculum! The themes that came up for me lately are body wisdom, passion, desire, intimacy and sustainable ecosystem.

I finished teaching my “mixed media playbook” class @ International Center of Photography and started swimming in a sea of knowledge myself! grateful for all the organizers and guides to lead the way. [big brain emoji]

I’m coming out as a nerd. I’m designing a life around my desire!

With the recent new moon in Gemini, a time known for reconnecting with our inner child and sense of innocence, the universe calls us to embrace freedom, lightness, and playfulness in our lives. This period calls for us to free our minds from limitations and pursue our ideal life with curiosity and youthful spirit. We are encouraged to face our emotions and shadows, while being clear about our beliefs and values. I spread these seeds:

This past May, I spent a lot of time setting up my home and my studio.

It became such a grounding practice during a period of deep chaos.

In stillness, I’m studying the space as a good friend. Each corner has its unique flavor.

During sunset time, there’s this golden hour light blessing my studio. It was so beautiful I couldn’t look away and set up the prototype of the studio in one afternoon: volcano mud natural dye fabric by my reiki teacher in taiwan + vintage chair from my friend’s parents’ wedding gift decades ago + the greatest magician the sun itself + my gaze.

My first client was myself.

As I bathed in the sun, my cat Evie joined purring on my lap. I imagined myself growing deep roots into the earth and sinking into the quiet space. My stress, for the first time after coming back to New York, seemed to be melting away.

When was the last time you allowed yourself to relax?

When was the last time you allowed yourself to be witnessed?

I hope to reclaim the power of being seen.

"On the last day of May, I visited @mengwencao studio in Sunset Park, to experience what I fondly call “spiritual photography.” 🔮

This program combined seemingly unrelated elements—foot bathing, full-body massage, tarot reading, energy awakening, and portrait shooting at magic hour—into a wonderfully coherent spiritual exploration.

The energy awakening was the most surprising part for me. Guided by Master Cao, I unexpectedly received a message from my future self that I hadn’t anticipated, which moved me to tears. As dusk settled on this cusp of spring and summer, she told me: “Relax and enjoy life." - Peiyue

❤️ Would you allow yourself to be abundant?

last month I saw a post by my multi-talented friend and cosmic sibling (@JezzChung) confessing their money stress. I had just came back to New York from Asia, oscillating between “I am nature’s blessed baby! We are born abundant” and “Why is everything so expensive? How do I survive and thrive here?” So we started scheming!

I vow to keep remembering the things I learnt from my trip in Asia. i found some more clippings in my notes:

source is abundant and loving. we are never detached from the source. we just gotta keep REMEMBERING and strengthening our relationship with the source. that’s something capitalism imperialism wants us to forget because once we remember our innate power source collectively we will inevitably dismantle the fake power of current politics and all the outdated systems.  

How can we keep remembering abundance as our birthright, especially in an environment that keeps feeding us scarcity narratives?

How can we reclaim wellness by healing our relationship to wealth?
We have to do it in community. We have to build a new culture for sensitive souls to safely bloom. It requires collective imagination. 💭🏞️

Over the last month, Jezz & I have been dreaming and setting up a container to explore these questions.

I’m writing to you from my home in Brooklyn.

My transition from Asia back to New York has been a bit turbulent. But the wisdom of impermanence has been grounding me in the gift of presence.

Two days after I left Taiwan, Hualian had an earthquake. Four days after I arrived in New York, New Jersey had an earthquake. I’m grateful that I’m still alive.

The question that keeps haunting me is - How would you live if you die today?

Collectively, we have been experiencing lots of cosmic shifts. We just said goodbye to the full moon in Scorpio, which shone a light on passion, intimacy and desire. It invites us to channel our power and go after what makes us feel alive.

I spread these seeds:

🌱 I step boldly into my personal power, embracing my autonomy and sovereignty as I shed the layers of superficiality. In surrendering, I am free to be my authentic self, surrounded by those who cherish and embrace me for all my complexities.

🌱 I cultivate a heart-centered economy, seeing abundance as a natural extension of my creative power. In this loving and protective bond, prosperity flows effortlessly, enriching my life as I dare to dream and manifest my deepest desires.

🫀 What I remembered during my trip to Heartland

The last few days in Taiwan, I went to a special place called Heartland.

It fits all my inner fairy garden imaginations. It’s a gem in the middle of a holy mountain overseeing the ocean in Dulan, Taitung.

This six-month Asia homecoming trip has been life-changing. It’s a cleansing portal that helps me remember that DAILY BLISS IS POSSIBLE & ABUNDANCE IS OUR BIRTHRIGHT.

I am not returning to the old lifestyle anymore.

I am committed to practicing and affirming my imagination of what a good life can be for me and my tribe.

To facilitate this transition back to New York, the owner of Heartland and I co-designed a ritual-based retreat alchemizing natural elements.

• day 1: sunset ocean meditation, beach fire dinner & release ritual.

• day 2: noble silence. meditation. BEING with myself, nature and the field in between.

• day 3: reflection & integration

In my deep reunion with nature, I know spirits are around us, supporting us as we walk our path on earth.

Here are a few inner truths I remembered and I hope to keep remembering:

1. I take responsibility for all my life experiences.

2. I am a channel of universal energy. We originate from the source of the universe and are inherently abundant.

3. Blockages are normal. I observe, clear, and release them, allowing love and light to flow freely.

4. I can find a balance between giving and receiving.

5. I strive to live and create from a win-win perspective. From a collective consciousness, you are me, and I am you. By letting go of competition, we can collaborate more to create a better future.

6. All things are created by the heart. 万物唯心造。

Before leaving, I was overflown with gratitude and awe. Made some images of the owner and surprised both of us. Ohh good news, I still love photography and how it can be a sacred space to reveal one’s soul. :)

I have so much more I wanna share, but I’m nearing the email length limit. Haha.

Last thing, I’ve been teaching mixed media storytelling at International Center of Photography lately. It’s a five-week course where I invite people to get in touch with our senses by playing with images, text, audio, video and website. Folks have been saying it feels like group art therapy. The journey also reminded me how much I love photo nerds, creative nerds and story nerds, how much I love facilitating imagination and deep dives. I see workshops as community gardens to gather, exchange ideas and world build together. I’m looking forward to cultivating more spaces and creating more offerings to be human together.

Happy March! I’m writing to you from Taitung, Taiwan. This month, I’ve been saying many hellos and goodbyes. I put myself in new environments and allowed myself to become a beginner again.

I delved into the realms of body work and energy work. I studied Thai massage, reiki and singing bowl. I am humbled to learn from masters who devoted their lives to these healing arts. I am blessed to learn with souls from all over the world who want to bring more love into the world. I will go into it more later. Seeds first. 

With the recent Equinox and Lunar Eclipse in Libra, a time known for beckoning us toward balance and harmony, we stand at the precipice of transformative change. This period urges us to confront our deepest shadows and insecurities, let go of what no longer serves our evolution, step outside our comfort zones and initiate new cycles of personal growth. It’s also a call for us to explore the depths of love, intimacy and meaningful connections. As we navigate this intense transition, let’s stay grounded in our authenticity and lend each other more compassion.

🌱 I embrace the duality within me, knowing that my light shines brightest when I face my darkness with courage. This journey of integration transforms my shadows into sources of strength and wisdom.

🫀 BODYWORK & ENERGY WORK AS CARE WORK: 

I went to learn Thai massage because I was moved to tears by the deep care I received in Chiang Mai and I want to know how it works and bring this healing to others. 

The first message I received in Chiang Mai was from massage therapist Miu in The Pattern Thai Massage. (Thanks Tony for bringing me there!) My body was so tight from the habitual tension built up from the warrior me in New York. She came in with a smile, then she put her palms together and whispered a short mantra, then she warmed her hands and put her reiki hands over my ankle. As she gently massaged all over my body, I felt her warm pulse and I slowly let it go. 

I later learned that the beginning process is called Wai Khru (paying respect to the teacher). The mantra translates to:

I have since received more massages that connect me deeper to my body. One time, I was drowning in deep stress and grief and received a session from massage therapist Anna @ Chanya Massage Traditional Thai. As she massaged my injured shoulder, she looked at me with sincere concern and care. Then she asked me slowly in her limited English: “What happened here?” I wept.

She didn’t know who I was. She couldn’t even figure out my gender (what is gender anyway lol). I didn’t need to prove my excellence or worthiness to receive her care. It’s extremely refreshing for me as someone who lived in the United States for the last decade as a queer immigrant working in the creative field. I realized I somehow internalized the model minority narrative as a form of survival. We deserve respect just because.

A month before leaving Thailand, I signed up for two-week immersive Level 1 & 2 program at International Training Massage School (ITM).

The founder of ITM Chongkol Setthakorn described Thai massage as a thousand gentle waves washing over the body. It’s pretty accurate. Do you know Nuad Thai / traditional Thai massage Thailand is listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity?!

Our routine every day is washing our feet, doing qigong/exercise, watching teacher demos, practicing and more practicing.

Learning Thai massage has been an eye-opening journey into the depths of healing and connection, here are some of my learnings and reflections:

• The fundamental need for physical connection: In a world increasingly mediated by screens and technology, it’s startling to realize how touch-deprived our modern society has become, particularly in the United States where misconceptions and stigmas around massage therapy persist. As we remember the lives lost in the Atlanta spa shooting three years ago, can we all place more value and appreciation for this healing art?

• Thai massage is yoga for the body and soul. It's a form of therapy. A practitioner told me she prefers to be called a 'massage therapist' rather than a 'masseuse' as it captures therapeutic value and the professional skill it requires. It’s also a dance between the receiver and the giver. Both need to be present to allow the energy to flow. In the act of helping others heal, we too are transformed, learning to listen deeply, not just to the bodies of those we work with but to the silent language of our own hearts.

• Breaking out of social bubbles, embracing diversity beyond labels: My classmates came from all over the globe — England, the Philippines, Japan, Italy, Czechia, and the Netherlands, to name a few, each bringing their own unique stories. Some of them are already practicing therapists, some came from the ancestral lineage of healers, some with dark histories but flipped their life around, and some work in the arts and crave a change of life. A beautiful reminder of the vastness of human experience and the universal need for connection!

• Being a channel, dissolving ego: We don't generate healing energy ourselves; rather, we are conduits through which this energy flows to reach those in need. It’s the same for creative energy. When we are stuck in our ego, it’s hard to allow creation and connection to happen.

• A safe space for all bodies: As someone moving through the world in a queer body, I am familiar with the feeling of disconnect with my body. But massage could be an affirming practice to reconnect with ourselves.

This journey has been one of coming home — to a community of healers, to a shared human heritage, and most importantly, to myself. It's a commitment to foster connections that heal, to create spaces where people can let go of their burdens, and to remember that, at its core, to touch with intention is to love.

My journey with reiki & sound bowl is another magical story. Stay tuned for next time. :)

• I hosted an event 《溫柔凝視：影像創作是愛的語言/與世界合作的方式 》/ “Tender gaze: image making as a love language and a way to collaborate with the world“ at Nowhere Bookstore in Chiang Mai 飞地清迈书店 sharing my long-term projects and invited people to do gazing and deep listening practice. I intended to create a warm environment for people to connect. So moved to see many diaspora Chinese folks coming together and opening their hearts. I love making people cry and laugh at the same time haha. <3

• LOVE, LUST, FREEDOM in Kunstmuseum Brandts in Odense, Denmark 2024/3/23-2025/5/1: So grateful to have my project HERE WE ARE showing amongst a list of amazing artists who I admire deeply.

I’m going to a holy mountain in Dulan, Taiwan for three days before heading back to New York on 4/1 ~ See you in the world!
