Il potere del suono.

Non smetterà mai di essere incredibile e meraviglioso e, a volte, un po’ inquietante. Molte volte i miei pensieri diventano così travolgenti che non sono più sicura che siano miei e allora so che c’è qualcosa che non va, ci sono entrata io o sono entrati loro e non mi piace. Quindi cerco di mettere in pratica il vecchio saggio consiglio: fare una pausa.

Come quando mettiamo in pausa un programma televisivo, abbiamo il potere di farlo anche nella nostra vita. A volte è intenzionale, altre volte automatico, come ad esempio il rallentamento che avviene in situazioni pericolose o che stanno per diventare pericolose. La pausa è essenziale per la nostra sopravvivenza, è il momento in cui possiamo entrare in sintonia con la nostra voce interiore. Quando mi sono data il permesso di mettere in pausa questa newsletter, ho potuto vivere molti momenti di riflessione scomoda, sicuramente, e mi ha dato lo spazio per ri-selezionare. Continuo a ricordarmi che per farlo bisogna essere coraggiosi e fidarsi dei propri sensi: se ho dubitato della mia saggezza, come potrei percepire quella altrui? Come potrei condividerla con voi?

Questo è ciò che sta influenzando il mio processo di montaggio in questo momento, con così tante voci diverse che arrivano attraverso le mie cuffie. Questo è ciò che sta influenzando come potrebbe prendere forma e chi altro potrei intervistare.

Non pensavo che sarebbe passato quasi un anno intero prima che decidessi di comunicare di nuovo pubblicamente con tutti voi. State certi che il film ANCORA LUCE è in fase di realizzazione. Stavo imparando come sterzare, guidare e farmi guidare. La correzione di strada che ho dovuto affrontare è stata caotica, miracolosa e umiliante.

Mi ricorda quando ero piccola, seduta in braccio a mio padre al posto di guida; anche se non abbiamo alcun controllo sulla forza che ci spinge, possiamo comunque sterzare. Posso scegliere come affrontare quella curva. Posso davvero sentire: è davvero questo che sto per fare? Cosa sto per dire? Quali emozioni mi spingono? Quanto sono coinvolta in tutto questo? So che non si tratta di una grande rivelazione e dubiterei seriamente se mi diceste di non aver bisogno di questo promemoria, soprattutto in momenti come questi.

Molti di voi sono nuovi lettori di questa newsletter, mentre molti altri la seguono dall’inizio. Ho condiviso con voi il percorso che mi ha portato a realizzare un film incentrando la Terra, partendo dalla mia comprensione di come il fuoco esiste sul territorio in Italia, di come coinvolgiamo con lui, di come sia benefico per la vita e di come le pratiche indigene attraverso le culture lo abbiano influenzato, possano influenzarlo o lo influenzeranno in futuro. Il mio punto di vista sarà sempre quello di onorare la sovranità e il diritto umano di avere il fuoco tra le mani e di usarlo responsabilmente. Molti di voi hanno finanziato la produzione del film e sanno che mi sono offerta volontaria per questo progetto, come apprendista nell’arte cinematografica e nell’uso del fuoco, in risposta diretta alla soppressione del suo utilizzo in Sicilia – una forma di politica punitiva che ha provocato incendi incontrollati. Infine, ho deciso di raccogliere queste storie per noi – per la cultura.

Credo che bruciare qui possa essere un atto pacifico e celebrativo. Lo è stato. Lo sarà. Lo è.

A volte incontrate persone che incontro io, a volte ci sono offerte, a volte si riceve una confessione, e a volte sono io a rimanere sbalordita, ripetutamente, dalla pura potenza degli elementi. Ovviamente, qui vengono condivisi anche aggiornamenti sul film. In ogni caso, questa è una lettera che, nella sua essenza, è scritta vivendo e respirando ciò che nel mondo occidentale è stato definito “ecologia spirituale”. È una lettera guidata da qualcosa di molto più grande di quello che possiamo immaginare.

Ho fiducia che riuscirete a discernere cosa vi sembra vero in ciò che condivido, se qualcosa non vi convince va bene. Se qualcosa è sbagliato non esitate a contattarmi. Il feedback è incredibilmente importante e so che molti di voi lavorano con il fuoco. In generale, spero che quanto condiviso qui stimoli la vostra curiosità su come possiate muovervi con integrità nelle terre in cui vivete, rimanendo in contatto con quelle che, per molti, sono le terre dei nostri antenati.

Quando si partecipa a un lavoro energetico per la terra, perché quando si appicca il fuoco avviene letteralmente una trasmutazione di energia e voi siete il catalizzatore, è innegabilmente bello ciò che può sprigionarsi e fluttuare attraverso di voi e il gruppo. Allo stesso tempo, possono accadere cose terribili se non si è fatta la dovuta preparazione e se non si presta attenzione. Non sono qui per spaventarvi sul fare bruciamenti, ovviamente, ma per essere sincera con voi. Sono qui per dare la priorità alla sicurezza.

Proprio come chi pianifica un fuoco prescritto negli stati uniti deve comunicare con i vigili del fuoco locali, l’ente per il controllo dell’inquinamento atmosferico, i vicini, i collaboratori e così via, è fondamentale anche comunicare con gli spiriti della terra. Ci sono spiriti custodi del paesaggio in cui ci si trova ed è essenziale essere chiari su ciò che si intende fare, essere onesti riguardo alle motivazioni che spingono a voler bruciare, saper interpretare il feedback della terra, che sia positivo o negativo, sintonizzarsi su come collaborare al meglio, adattarsi, rispettare e aggiornare tali accordi è essenziale. Essenziale.

Bruciare è sempre un evento collettivo e, in realtà, raramente c’è fretta di farlo. Questa nota sulla preparazione non serve solo a rendere il più celebrativo possibile il classico confronto tra intenzioni e impatto, spesso effettuato negli ambienti della giustizia sociale, o il monitoraggio delle intenzioni e degli effetti, successivo a un fuoco intenzionale, ma perché sento la responsabilità di condividerla con voi. Mi sono messa in questa situazione, ho esperienza e, sebbene sia sempre stata guidata dai miei angeli, avrei potuto prepararmi meglio all’ondata di energia collettiva che ha permeato il mio spazio all’inizio di questo film e del mio percorso di apprendimento attraverso il fuoco. Avrei potuto prendere strade diverse.

Ho visto, o meglio mi è stato mostrato, come il modo di operare, spesso militaristico, fosse e sia tuttora profondamente radicato nelle pratiche di bruciatura controllata, e come la terra reagisca spesso come se fosse scoppiata una guerra. Venivo tormentata da incubi terribili. Chi aveva detto loro che stavamo bruciando le loro case? Qual era l’accordo per modificare il paesaggio? Quali sono i nostri parametri e/o indicatori per valutare se questo sia salutare? Sentivo persino persone usare l’espressione “cerca e distruggi” per descrivere il lavoro di riduzione del combustibile. Nonostante le buone intenzioni di aprire la foresta per sostenere diverse forme di vita e proteggere le comunità dagli incendi riducendo il carico di materiale combustibile, il modo in cui ci muoviamo e ciò che diciamo non viene ascoltato solo da noi - è un continuo scambio di messaggi.

Questo lavoro è un connubio di scienza e spiritualità, due cose inscindibili. È un lavoro complesso e specifico per ogni caso, si commettono errori e non posso negare che l’intuizione avrà l’ultima parola. È fondamentale che le persone possiedano le competenze e il permesso necessari per interagire in sicurezza con gli spiriti del territorio. In un’epoca in cui la guerra è vista e/o vissuta così da vicino nei nostri spazi intimi, se ho il privilegio di non perpetuare le dinamiche, lo farò. Preferisco fallire piuttosto che farlo. Quando le operazioni hanno la priorità su una comunicazione completa, ci sono delle conseguenze. Come posso dirlo nel modo più delicato possibile senza offendere chi svolge questo tipo di lavoro? Lo dico perché mi sta a cuore, perché si tratta di consapevolezza della situazione.

Affermo inoltre che non si tratta di una montagna da scalare. Certo, esistono tecniche di lavoro energetico da apprendere per entrare in armonia con le terre di cui ci prendiamo cura, a beneficio di tutti. Possediamo già innatamente delle capacità percettive, ma dobbiamo solo allenarle in modo sicuro: ci vuole pausa. Ci sono persone che insegnano diverse forme di lavoro energetico e che lo fanno da tutta la vita. Il mio suggerimento, non richiesto, per chiunque intraprenda questo lavoro è di collaborare con chi ha un buon rapporto con le terre della propria zona e condivide la stessa visione, per aiutarvi in ​​questa preparazione e per evitare di avere un impatto di cui non eravate consapevoli.

Per due anni mi sono trattenuta dal spiegare pubblicamente questo aspetto del bruciare per paura: paura di essere liquidata come una cosa new age o irrealistica, paura che il mio lavoro venisse visto come una creazione di miti, paura di essere esclusa dalle connessioni che possono promuovere l’uso sicuro del fuoco sulla terra per tutti, diverse forme di paura collettiva riguardo a cosa significhi davvero stare insieme, e una serie di altre emozioni connesse. Mi ha paralizzata per mesi in un modo quasi surreale. So di essermela cercata in un modo o nell’altro e alla fine penso che tutti noi potremmo riflettere su: a chi serve tutto questo?

Sebbene ciò di cui ho parlato sia rivolto a coloro che ospitano gli abbruciamenti, vale per tutti noi che siamo qui e desideriamo approfondire il significato del prendersi cura di questa terra. Forse lo state già facendo. Forse non c’è nessuno da cui vi sentite a vostro agio ad imparare, o forse vi sembra irraggiungibile, non applicabile e/o semplicemente opprimente. Lo rispetto e vi incoraggerò quando sarà il momento giusto, se mai arriverà. Ci vogliono impegno, integrità e la volontà di comprendere il proprio rapporto con ogni cosa. Detto questo, ci sono anche molti momenti in cui ci si sente come una sagra che riscopre il suo centro, condito da una spruzzata di gioiose sorprese. È realismo magico nella sua forma più pura.

Ricordo che circa 5 anni fa, io e mia madre avevamo problemi con i semi di pomodoro che non germogliavano. Dissi: “Prima di cercare informazioni online, chiedo un parere ai nostri sogni”. Mi fidai, mi lasciai guidare dall’istinto e lo feci con tutto l’amore che provo per i pomodori, per le piante in generale, e con curiosità. Quella notte, in sogno, mi apparve una donna anziana che mi disse di far bollire i semi in acqua per cinque secondi e poi di seminarli. Lo facemmo e tutti i semi germogliarono nel giro di 3-4 giorni. Lo dico perché ancora oggi mi fa sorridere, apprezzo quell’aiuto e ci tengo a sottolineare che non sono una persona speciale per averlo ricevuto. Ho incontrato molte persone che hanno coltivato questa capacità di comunicare con l’energia, il nostro linguaggio primordiale. Tutti noi lo parliamo già.

Per la maggior parte di voi che leggete e siete interessati al tema del fuoco, sappiate che ci troviamo su terre che i nostri antenati non abitano da molto tempo e, anche se lo facessero, è necessario prestare attenzione a ciò che è accaduto in passato quando si introduce qualcosa di potente come il fuoco in un luogo che non lo vede da tempo. Nessuno ha il diritto di possedere la terra. Come si è manifestato il fuoco in questi luoghi nel corso della storia? È sempre un insieme di fattori. Negli Stati Uniti dobbiamo molto al coraggio dei popoli indigeni e a coloro che sono disposti a rispettare la loro conoscenza e a includere loro nei processi decisionali - speriamo con meno appropriazione e negazione delle loro esperienze in futuro. Anche a livello internazionale devo ringraziarli. È grazie a persone come loro e ai miei antenati che sanno usare il fuoco con saggezza che posso essere qui in Sicilia, non per fantasia, ma partecipando attivamente.

La capacità di prenderci cura dei nostri ecosistemi, sia nel passato che nel presente, è un dono che la guerra sta cercando di strapparci proprio in questo momento in tante parti del mondo. Possiamo toccare la terra in pace e crescere insieme ad essa: questo è inestimabile e cerco di non darlo mai per scontato.

In linea con il desiderio di riscoprire il dono di vivere su questo grande pianeta blu, nonostante la serietà della vita, vorrei regalarvi delle creature! Essendo una persona piena di idee (che trovo meravigliose, ahah), spesso mi sento esasperata dal fatto che sia impossibile realizzarle tutte. Quindi, per abitudine, a volte affido queste idee all’universo, chiedendo che vengano accolte da qualcuno che sappia realizzarle al meglio. Mi allevia molto la pressione e, quando mi sento particolarmente morbida in un senso, preferisco che queste idee si concretizzino e prendano vita piuttosto che tenermele per me.

There’s a balance between isolation and solitude and the words that we speak in those times - either with voice or thought they hold equal power. I may be alone in my room but I’d be mistaken to believe the walls, the ground, and my heart don’t hear what I am saying. That they don’t feel the energy charging my presence. I’d be mistaken to think I am not interacting with all of the information that I can receive from them as well. It’s like walking into a space and feeling the tone of the last conversation spoken, it’s as if their words still permeate the space. Whether with grace or strain they are still speaking. This is what I’ve come to consider our base language. It was recently explained that this is also a reason why many mystics still pray the same words in the same places. Those sacred sites still hold those words spoken and by saying them again with the same invocation, we nourish the existence of them so they may remain - so they become more powerful and realized.

The power of sound.

That won’t ever stop being incredible and beautiful and sometimes, a bit alarming. Lots of times my thoughts become so overwhelming that I’m not sure they’re my own anymore and I know then, something’s off. I either walked in or it entered and I’m not liking it. So I try to practice the sage old advice - pause.

Just like pausing a TV show we have the ability to do so in our life. Sometimes it’s intentional and sometimes it’s automatic, for example the slow down that happens in dangerous or about to be dangerous situations. Pause is essential to our survival, it’s when you can attune to your own voice. Giving myself the permission to pause this newsletter allowed for many moments of uncomfortable reflection, oh yes, and has gifted me with the space to re-select. I keep getting reminded that to do so requires being brave and to trust my senses. If I doubt my own wisdom how could I sense another’s? How could I share it with you?

This is what is informing my process of editing currently as so many different people’s voices come through my earphones. This is what is informing how it may come together and who could be interviewed next. I did not think it’d be almost an entire year until I decided to communicate publicly with you all again. Rest assured the film ANCORA LUCE is very much in the making. I’ve just been learning how to steer - how to direct and be directed. The course correction I’ve been through has been nothing short of messy as f***, miraculous, and humbling.

It reminds me of being little on the lap of my dad in the driver’s seat; even if we are completely out of control of the momentum that moves us we can still steer. I can choose how to take this turn. I get to actually feel, is this really what I’m about to do? What am I about to say? What emotions are motivating me? How am I invested in this? Checking on that speed, I know this isn’t any grand epiphany and I’d really doubt you if you told me you didn’t need the reminder - especially in times like these.

Many of you are new to this newsletter and many of you have been here from the start. I’ve been sharing the journey of making an earth centered film through my understanding of how fire exists on land in Southern Italy, how we engage with it, how it’s beneficial to life, and how cross-cultural indigenous ways have, can, or may influence it. I will always be coming from a space of honoring sovereignty and the human right to have fire in hand and use it responsibly. Many of you funded the production of the film and know that I volunteered to do this as an apprentice of the craft of filmmaking and fire in direct response to the suppression of its use in Sicily - a form of punitive policy that has stimulated backlash wildfires. Ultimately, I decided to collect these stories for us - per la cultura.

I believe burning here can be peaceful and celebratory. It has been. It will be. It is.

Sometimes you meet people I meet, sometimes there are offerings, sometimes you get a confession, and sometimes it’s me being stunned silly over and over by the sheer power of the elements. Also, of course updates about the film are shared here. In all, this is a letter that at the core is written within living and breathing what has been termed in the western world as ‘spiritual ecology’. It’s a letter guided by much more than we can imagine.

I trust you’ll gauge what feels true from what I share and if something isn’t right, get in touch. Feedback is incredibly important and I know a good handful of you work with fire. Overall, my hope is that what is shared here stimulates your curiosity on how you may move in integrity through the lands that you live on while connecting to what for a lot of you, are our ancestral homelands.

When taking part in doing energy work for the land, because when you set fire there is literally the transmutation of energy happening and you are the catalyst, it is undeniably beautiful what can combust and float through you and the group. Just as plausible, terrible things can happen if you haven’t done the prep work and if you don’t pay attention. I’m not here to scare you from burning obviously, and I’m here to be real with you. I’m here to keep safety a priority.

Just like someone who’s planning a prescribed burn in the united states and needs to communicate with the local fire department, air pollution control, neighbors, collaborators, and so on… there also needs to be land spirit communication. There are custodian spirits of the landscape you are in and being clear with what you intend to do, at your core being honest about what motives steer why you want to burn, knowing how to read the feedback if its a no or yes from the land, tuning in to how to best collaborate, adjusting, and respecting and updating those agreements if needed is essential. Essential.

Burning is always a collective event and truly, rarely is there a rush to burn. This note on prep is not only so the classic intention vs. impact analysis that is done often in social justice spaces or the intention vs. effects monitoring that happens post a burn can be as celebratory as possible, it’s because it’s my responsibility to tell you. I put myself and have been put in this position, I have experience and though I have always been cradled by my spirit counsel, I could have better prepared myself for the wave of collective energy that permeated my space as I begun this film and learning from fire. I could have taken different turns.

I saw or rather was shown, how the often militaristic way of operating was and is still so embedded in prescribed burning work and can often be something the land reacts to as if war has arrived. I was getting bombarded with horrible dreams. Who told them we were burning their homes? What was the agreement for changing the landscape? What are our measurements and/or our indicators for if this is healthy? I’d even hear people say “seek and destroy” to describe fuels reduction work amidst all the good intention to open up the forest to support different life forms and protect communities from wildfires by decreasing vegetative material. The way we move and what we speak isn’t just heard by us - it’s all a call and response.

This work is a mix of science and spirit - one in the same. It’s nuanced and case specific, we make mistakes, and I can’t avoid that intuition will have the last say. There is the need for people to have the skillset and permission to safely navigate dynamics with the land spirits. In a time when war is so closely viewed and/or experienced in our intimate spaces if I have the privilege to not perpetuate its dynamics then I will. I’d rather fail than do so. When operations are put in priority over well rounded communication, there are consequences. How can I say this in the most tender way without offending those in that line of work? I say it because I care, because it’s situational awareness.

I also say, it is not some mountain to surpass. You bet there are energy work techniques to get skilled up with so we may come into accord with the lands we are taking care of for the benefit of everyone, seen and unseen. There are ways of sensing that we already innately have but just need to safely train - it requires pause. There are people teaching various forms of energy work and who have done so for their entire lives. Collaborating with those who are in good relationship with the lands in your area and who are like hearted to help with that preparation, to help you from having an impact you had no awareness of, is my unsolicited suggestion for anyone who does this work.

For two years, I’ve been holding back publicly explaining this aspect of burning because of fear - fear of being brushed off as woo woo or unrealistic, fear of my work being seen as myth making, fear of exclusion from connections that can support safe fire on land for everyone, different types of collective fear of what it means to truly come together, and a host of other connected emotions. It crippled me for months in a way that was otherworldly. I’m aware I asked for this in one way or another and in the end I think we can all do well to reflect on, who does this serve?

Though what I have been touching on is directed towards those hosting burns, this goes for all of us who are here and down to deepen what it is to care for this earth. Maybe you’re already doing it. Maybe there is no one who you feel comfortable learning from, or maybe this feels out of reach, not applicable, and/or just overwhelming. I respect that and I’ll encourage you when the time feels right if it ever comes for you. It takes effort and integrity and willingness to witness how you relate to everything. That said, it also comes along with many moments of feeling like a sagra remembering its core mixed with a dollop of joyful surprises. It’s magical realism at its finest.

I remember one day some 5 years ago my mom and I were having issues with our tomato seeds not sprouting, I said “Let me ask my dreams tonight before we look anything up.” I trusted, I allowed myself to receive, and I did so in the spirit of loving tomatoes, loving plants really in general, and genuine curiosity. That night an older woman showed up in my dreams telling me to boil the seeds for five seconds in water and then sow them. We did so and they all germinated within 3-4 days. I say this because that still puts a fat smile on my face, I appreciate the help, and to emphasize I’m not special in having received that help. I’ve met many people who have cultivated these ways of communicating with energy - our base language. We all already speak it.

For most of you reading interested in burning, we are on lands that our lineages haven’t been on for long and even if they have been, care needs to be taken for what has happened there when introducing something as powerful as fire in a space that hasn’t seen it for some time. No one is entitled to the earth. How has fire been present there historically? It’s always a mix. In the states we owe a lot to the courage of indigenous peoples and those willing to respect their science and include them in spaces of decision making power - hopefully with less appropriation and denial of their experiences as we continue. Internationally, I owe thanks to all of them as well. It’s because of people like them and my ancestors who burn well that I’m able to be here in Sicily not in fantasy but in active participation.

The old and the new of how we can take care of our ecologies is a gift that war is attempting to strip from people as we speak. We get to touch the ground in peace and grow with it - that’s invaluable and I’m trying to not take it for granted.

In line with focusing back on the gift of being on this big blue planet even with all the seriousness of life, I’d like to gift you all some creatures! As someone who has loads of ideas (that I think are wonderful haha) I often feel exasperated by the fact that it would be impossible to bring them all to fruition. So, as a practice I sometimes send those ideas out to the universe and ask for them to be taken up by someone who can do them well. If they’re meant to be done. It relieves a lot of pressure and when I’m feeling all soft, I’d rather these ideas be realized and exist than hoard the beauty.

That’s similar to how I feel about the seeds and sourdough starter(s) that I and others have collected. So, I’m gifting them to you if you’d like. That day of weaving in Santa Barbara was the winter solstice and as I started the foundation of the basket I found myself not wanting to weave one at all, I played around and ended up weaving a sun. I left with the promise to come back and share how to do the fascedde cheese basket using the Giunco, a weave that is slowly dying out in Sicily due to a phenomenon called ‘Californization’ that encouraged sanitary regulations restricting the allowance of them to be used in cheesemaking as they once were. I arrived at my parent’s house full from that weaving session and a week spent with my nonni to place that little fascedda sun on top of the christmas tree. I also arrived to lots of kaki slowly ripening that a farmer shared freely.

If you’re looking for light in the winter, persimmons at the start and then citrus throughout are there to serve up. This helped me so much as I waited to move back to Italy.

Growing up in Los Angeles County and Orange County, citrus are almost an icon. Before the construction of the suburban sprawl and after the brutal attempt at a mass clearing of native vegetation and peoples, many acres of citrus trees were planted. You can still find some orange trees in people’s backyards around 100 yrs. old, though those ones are far and few now. Summer memories come thick of me and neighborhood friends sitting under lemon trees sucking on lemons that we poured salt on. For sure the reason why I had a triangle gap in my two front teeth. Something I confirmed recently since I started sucking on them again and my two front teeth responded by becoming translucent haha.

I’m lucky to have grown up with citrus, a group of trees that Southern Italy is also very fond of. A tree that is not native to either place, but has integrated itself into the culture. A tree that can hold its fruit on it for over two years, going from orange or yellow to green again depending on temperature. Go ahead, fact check me.

I was speaking with my sister, who recently moved out of the area affected by the Eaton fire in LA, and we couldn’t fathom what we were feeling for a while.

My comments on the LA wildfires sum up to this - a lot of people knew this could/would happen but they were not listened to and I’m so sorry it came to this. I’ve talked to many people in the fire world, a few with over 40 yrs of experience at hand in California specifically. The only people who were surprised by this were those who were obsessively in their own world. My Zia was a lead of one of the evacuation centers and the most she commented to me was that it’s like a war zone, true desperation and grief when your home is down to embers. Though not comparable, it makes me think of Palestine and Lebanon and many others being bombed, destruction from hate and more deeply, from shame.

The Santa Ana winds, though not exactly the same, can be compared to the Scirocco winds of Sicily. They are strong, warm, and dry mostly. The Santa Ana winds traverse miles from the north-eastern deserts to arrive in Southern California. The Scirocco winds come from the south traversing water, from the Sahara desert in North Africa. Both are often blamed for encouraging wildfires. An Italian article by the WWF recently came out highlighting Sicily in light of the LA fires calling for resilient solutions. Quel giorno di tessitura era il solstizio d'inverno e mentre iniziavo a tessere la base del cestino mi sono ritrovata a non volerne intrecciare uno, ho giocato un po’ e ho finito per intrecciare un sole. Sono partita con la promessa di tornare e condividere come intrecciare le fascedde usando il Giunco ​​di quelle terre, un intreccio che sta lentamente scomparendo in Sicilia a causa di un fenomeno chiamato "Californizzazione" che ha incoraggiato norme sanitarie che non ne consentono l'uso nella produzione di formaggio come una volta. Sono arrivata a casa dei miei genitori piena da quella sessione di intreccio e da una settimana trascorsa con i miei nonni per mettere quel piccolo sole di fascedda in cima all'albero di Natale. Sono anche arrivata a un sacco di cachi che maturavano lentamente e che mia madre, mia sorella e mio padre avevano la libertà di raccogliere

Se stai cercando la luce in inverno, i cachi all'inizio e poi gli agrumi dappertutto sono lì per essere serviti. Questo mi è stato di grande aiuto mentre aspettavo di tornare in Italia.

Crescendo nella contea di Los Angeles e nella contea di Orange, gli agrumi sono quasi un'icona. Prima della costruzione dell'espansione urbana e dopo il brutale tentativo di una massiccia bonifica della vegetazione e delle popolazioni autoctone, vennero piantati molti acri di alberi di agrumi. Nei cortili delle persone si possono ancora trovare degli aranci vecchi di oltre 100 anni, anche se ormai sono pochi e rari. Mi tornano in mente i ricordi estivi di me e degli amici del quartiere seduti sotto gli alberi di limoni a succhiare limoni su cui mettevamo sale. Di sicuro il motivo per cui avevo uno spazio triangolare tra i due denti anteriori. Qualcosa che ho confermato di recente da quando ho ricominciato a succhiarli e i miei due denti anteriori hanno risposto diventando traslucidi haha.

Sono fortunata ad essere cresciuta con gli agrumi, un gruppo di alberi che anche l'Italia meridionale ama molto. Un albero che non è originario di nessuno dei due posti, ma che si è integrato nella cultura. Un albero che può conservare i suoi frutti per oltre due anni, passando dall'arancione o dal giallo al verde di nuovo a seconda della temperatura. Avanti, verifica i fatti.

Stavo parlando con mia sorella, che si è trasferita di recente dalla zona colpita dall'incendio di Eaton a Los Angeles, e per un po’ non siamo riuscite a capire cosa stessimo provando.

I miei commenti sugli incendi boschivi di Los Angeles si riassumono in questo: molte persone sapevano che questo poteva/sarebbe successo, ma non sono state ascoltate e mi dispiace tanto che si sia arrivati ​​a questo. Ho parlato con molte persone nel mondo degli incendi, alcune con oltre 40 anni di esperienza in California in particolare. Le uniche persone che sono rimaste sorprese da questo sono state quelle che si trovavano nel loro mondo, che è la maggior parte di una città quando si tratta di eventi climatici come questo. Mia zia è a capo di uno dei centri di evacuazione e il massimo che mi ha detto è stato che è come una zona di guerra, vera disperazione e dolore quando la tua casa è ridotta a braci. Sebbene molto diverso, mi fa pensare alla Palestina e al Libano e a molti altri paesi bombardati, alla distruzione causata dall'odio e, più profondamente, dalla vergogna.

I venti di Santa Ana, sebbene non siano esattamente gli stessi, possono essere paragonati ai venti di Scirocco della Sicilia. Sono forti, caldi, e in più secchi. I venti di Santa Ana attraversano miglia dai deserti nord-orientali per arrivare nella California meridionale. I venti di Scirocco provengono da sud attraversando l'acqua, dal deserto del Sahara nel Nord Africa. Entrambi sono spesso accusati di incendi boschivi. Di recente è uscito un articolo del WWF che metteva in evidenza la Sicilia alla luce degli incendi di Los Angeles, chiedendo soluzioni resilienti. Questo è ciò che questo film intende rivelare.

Sappiamo che durante la dominazione greca delle terre dell'attuale Italia meridionale, i devoti del dio Asclepio arrivavano al suo tempio nella Valle dei Tempi ad Agrigento con le loro offerte e l'intenzione di guarire. La pratica consisteva nell'entrare in una camera di incubazione spesso accompagnata da rosmarino, dove attraverso i loro sogni/trance avrebbero ricevuto informazioni che i sacerdoti/sacerdotesse avrebbero interpretato. Oggi, la maggior parte di noi è nella posizione di decifrare e dare significato ai sogni da soli e, secondo la mia esperienza, quando ascolto le persone che condividono le loro visioni notturne, l'intuizione del sognatore è sempre il miglior interprete. In culture specifiche e all'interno di nuclei familiari, i simboli come indicatori di significato possono essere tramandati da generazioni. Ad esempio nella mia famiglia c'è un sogno molto specifico di cui so se/quando arriva, cosa significa. Mi fido perché si fida mia nonna, perché si fidava il mio bisnonno e perché è dimostrato che è vero. La fede nella sua trasmissione è forte in noi.

Dopo più di 24 ore di viaggio, l'atto di sprofondare in un letto a casa dei miei genitori e guardare le nuvole passare attraverso la finestra è stato un altro tipo di cura. È cambiato il mio atteggiamento e la mia melodia, i miei sogni sono più chiari e c’è la piena presenza di un incendio che sta bruciando le montagne vicine dal 5 luglio. Adesso è lontano e anche se la cenere non cade più qui, il limite fin troppo familiare di un altro potenziale evento è vicino.

L'ultima volta che mi hai sentito ero nella mia piccola tenda arancione sulle Madonie, dove ho trascorso le mie ultime settimane in Sicilia.

We know that during the Greek domination of the lands of modern-day Southern Italy, devotees of the god Asclepius would arrive at his temple in the Valle dei Tempi in Agrigento with their offerings and an intention to heal. The practice was to enter an incubation chamber often accompanied by rosemary, where through their dreams/trance they would receive information for the priests/priestesses to interpret. Today, most of us are in the position to decipher and make meaning from dreams by ourselves and in my experience when listening to people share their nighttime visions, intuition of the dreamer is always the best interpreter. Amidst their recounting and far-off look as they see the images again in their head, a few curious questions from the listener can bring lots of insight to what is desired or needed. Knowing the textures of one’s dreams becomes easier and easier because some really are just imprints from social media scrolling, or maybe you just had to go pee and they all got really stressful? :)

There’s always that one that felt different though; that felt important. If you can remember. Rosemary helps with that.

In specific cultures and within family units, symbols as indicators for meanings can be passed down generationally. For example, in my family there is a very specific dream that I know if/when it arrives, what it means. I trust it because my Nonna trusts it, because my bisnonno trusted it, and because it's proven to be true. The belief in the transmission of it is held strong through us.

After 24+ hours of traveling, the act of sinking into a bed at my parent’s house and watching the clouds pass through the window was another type of cure. It’s changed my tude and tune, my dreams are clearer, and wildfire that’s been burning the nearby mountains since July 5th is contained. It’s far off now and though the ash isn’t falling here anymore, the all too familiar edge of another potentially happening is near.
