1. This Grumpy song “Lonesome Ride” This song needs to pumped into my freaking veins. I literally cannot stop listening to it. I was on the bus to bushwick the other day and I listened to it the entire time I was on the b38. 45 minutes, on repeat! I can’t say why but it sort of made me want to listen to “itch”

3. ‘6 foot pole” by Safe Mind - Safe mind is a collaborative project between August Muller and Cooper B. Handy. Muller is 1/2 of Boy Harsher and Cooper is in Taxidermists and Club Casualties.

5. Next track is “Hold on” by Phoenix James - I really like this track and I think it deserves more love right now, phoenix james doesn’t have a ton out but I am excited to see what is next from her. I love the guitar on this track and how hard the groove goes. I would LOVE to see this live. She was featured on this Jack Villere album last year.

6. Here is my favorite track from that afformentioned Jack Villere album “SNOEY”

7. My friend sent me this Ovven song the other day, thank god. i loved it. Seriously hilarious lyrics about being prospect of being nicknamed OJ. How different his life would be if he was called that haha. Alex Farrar produced this.- he’s produced a ton of burlington vermont folks as well which is why this track kind of reminds me of Wednesday and MJ etc.

8. I also think you can’t talk about this americana emergence in the scene without mentioning Jason Molina.

9. “Do It Again” by Beefheart & McQuinn (Moby Beefheart and Winter McQuinn) These guys are Australian which made me think of this other Australian band that I have been seeing pop up a lot lately.

10. Media Puzzle. I enjoyed the little elements of collage in this track -

11. “Pop” by babyfather. Babyfather is the experimental hip hop project of Dean Blunt, he is absolutely prolific. Genre bending, no genre at all, experimental avant garde.

12. Dean produced one of my favorite tracks on ASAP’s last record “don’t be dumb”

13. The sample in the above track is Lauryn Hill “I Gotta Find Peace of Mind” which rocks my world every time I listen to it. The studio version of it doesn’t exist, it was only released as a live track on MTV Unplugged. “Touch my mouth with your hands” I just love her so much, this song needs another 9 minutes.

15. Elias Rønnenfelt can literally do anything. This will be Iceage’s 6th studio album. Star is pop leaning post-punk. I love how weird and strung out it gets in the end when he keeps repeating “Louisiana”, which i had to look up what word he was saying because I did not understand. Also the hand claps made me laugh…

17. I have been absolutely loving this song by Rachel Lime, I discovered her on a whim when writing my newsletter, just listening to some of the people that are playing in NYC this week. I was immediately so so obsessed. She is brilliant.

18. She was playing the show with Blums - who only has one single out but I LOVE, it’s so dark and chamber pop, so beautiful.

19. Lifetimes by slimdan - this song is genuinely so fun, slimdan (danny silberstein) has written and produced for a lot of pop singers that I enjoy listening to, Carol Ades, Sasha Sloan. I was listening to some of his inspirations and this track

The photos of our parents in college, taken on an old film camera. The coming-of-age television shows with the coolest clothes and the cutest boys (Freaks & Geeks, My So-Called Life). Even the latest Gen-X craze - “going analog” - is an illustration of the nostalgia we have for a time we weren’t alive to bear witness to.

My biggest obsession with the 90s, though, is the music. The first 90s record I really loved was Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette, which I listened to for the first time when I was 13. At the time, I had never heard a woman be that vulnerable and angry (it would be years before I discovered Courtney Love) and my 13-year-old self, newly menstruating, was enthralled.

My dad, who was 23 when Jagged Little Pill was released, shared a similar love for Alanis, the “Angry White Female” as Rolling Stone called her on the cover of their November 1995 issue (good one). Over the years, he’d introduce me to 90s records that would become holy to me - Liz Phair’s Exile In Guyville, Fiona Apple’s Tidal, Hole’s Live Through This, Veruca Salt’s American Thighs, The Breeders’ Last Splash. I was, over and over again, liberated by the words of these women - shocked by their unabashed honesty and their ability to blend irony with poignancy.

At this point, I have completely flooded my life with all things 90s music. My bookshelf is a collection of memoirs and biographies related to the scene (my favorite is Rebel Girl by Kathleen Hanna, but Girl in a Band by Kim Gordon is a close second). In recent years, I’ve watched countless documentaries from or about the decade (I recommend L7: Pretend We’re Dead and 1991: The Year Punk Broke). If I haven’t made it clear enough already, I consider myself a 90s music enthusiast.

There’s so much to be said about 90s music culture - specifically rock, which heavily defined the music of the decade. There were pockets of the scene that, looking back, are more reminiscent of the culture today: the all-powerful media conglomerate that was home to MTV, corporate acquisition of indie labels, and “sell-out” allegations if an artist seemed to become too commercialized for the public’s liking. But there were also pockets that now feel unfamiliar: open political outrage from mainstream artists, unauthorized subversion of the corporate machine, and counterculture movements independent of relentless social media commentary.

There was a hunger in the 90s from musicians and fans alike to relate not only artistically but ideologically. Punk music became more than a genre, it was a movement. And it wasn’t just coming from an underground scene, it was a gospel spread by voices on the biggest stages, the biggest radio stations, and the biggest television networks in the country. “Grunge” became synonymous with rebellion and protest of American culture - it was anti-capitalist, anti-conformity, and anti-censorship.

Displays of this attitude often happened in bold statements: in 1992, Sinéad O’Connor infamously ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II during her performance on Saturday Night Live in protest of the systemic abuse in the Catholic Church. On the cover of Rolling Stone that same year, Kurt Cobain can be seen wearing a t-shirt that reads “Corporate Magazines Still Suck”, an ironic expression of anti-establishment. Songs like “Youth Against Facism” by Sonic Youth and “Killing In The Name” by Rage Against The Machine were bold political statements made by major label artists protesting police brutality, institutionalized racism, authoritarianism, and the Supreme Court.

There were also bigger, direct initiatives like Rock For Choice, a series of benefit concerts founded by the grunge band L7 that raised money for abortion rights groups and clinics in the U.S. Among the bands that played were Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, No Doubt, and Hole. The concert series was a direct unification of music and activism, mobilizing audiences and artists at a time when abortion was largely stigmatized (luckily everyone is super chill about it now).

Then there was Lilith Fair, a women-led music festival co-founded by Sarah McLachlan in response to concert promoters refusing to put two women on the same bill. In its first 3 years, more than 1.5 million people attended the festival, and roughly $10 million was raised for various women’s charities. Over 100 artists played Lilith Fair, including Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow, Lauryn Hill, Indigo Girls, Erykah Badu, and Queen Latifah. It was in defiance of the status quo, challenging music industry standards but also larger, systemic sexism.

It’s sometimes hard to believe the popular music culture of the 90s: the biggest artists in the country coming together to be a part of something bigger than themselves - something that would provoke crucial conversations and make a real, lasting impact. It wasn’t out of a desire for money or fame, it was despite the risk of losing them. They built their legacies by prioritizing integrity over expectation - never immune to criticism but never afraid of it, either. Through their actions, they proved how powerful voices can be when they are heard together, blasting through the speakers.

Maybe that’s the biggest difference between the culture of then and now - the cultivation of community. Every day we become more and more divided, whether that’s because we all live in our own social media echo chamber or because of the growing numbness we wield to combat a constant state of doom, it often feels like every person for themselves. At a time when everyone can know everyone’s opinion on everything at any second, the pressure to conform is almost unavoidable, resulting in the biggest threat of all: silence.

But art has always had a way of bringing people together, no matter the time and place. There’s a desire seeping through my generation to feel that unity again, and it’s not an impossible dream. It could start from the ground up, like a girl in her early 20s with a plan to amplify women’s voices, support important causes, and engage in political activism.

We’re long overdue for a resurgence of the 90s punk rock state of mind. I’m more than ready for it.
