My girl just turned one, and I’m back to running my business & delving into the fashion industry with an entirely shifted perspective. The time ‘off’ and the subsequent hours spent browsing (my number 1 night feed activity) meant I discovered some pretty cool new fashion and lifestyle brands, all either making to order, or creating in small batches. Sharing some of my faves here!

Le Nodo

Whilst my journey to shopping way more consciously is ongoing, I had to treat myself to one of these bags. Handmade by Cindy in NYC (and packed up by her and her mum!) they are the most fun bags I’ve come across in a long time. I opted for this one and I love it!

Beau London

Carrying a reusable water bottle around is second nature to most of us by now, but finding one that is cute is harder than it should be. Enter, Beau London! I found these guys on Instagram and really like how the bottles look. The Alice will be my next purchase.

Grandpa’s Shirts

My go-to formula for a work day is denim and a shirt. I came across Grandpa’s Shirts, made by Gaby, and love her creations (made in honour of her late Grandpa) She makes fun new designs in small batches, so it’s best to watch her socials to see what’s coming next. I’m personally holding off for a fun big collar moment like the below!

I found this Australian brand in the Spring and fell in love with the perfect summer-dressing pieces that founder & designer Lou is creating. She has nailed the balance of simple and statement. I’ve got my eye on the Manon - her 2-in-1 tassel skirt dress.

Suz Berlin

During another late night IG scroll, I found Suz Berlin - the hat brand I can’t stop thinking about. A hat on holiday is a non-negotiable for me (baby skin forever please) and I’m desperate to add one of these to my collection. They are each made to order, and offer a range of sizes, which is a big tick for me and my pea head.

Isabella Hewitt

Ok, this one may be a sneaky one, as I actually now work with Isabella on her PR, but wow. Mega fine jewellery this way. Based in East-London, her made-to-order pieces boldly sit at the intersection of multidisciplinary design. My 5 year business anniversary is this Autumn, and I’m planning on adding one of her pieces from the Resonance collection to my jewellery box to mark the occasion.

Alkeme London

Someone gifted me the NO.1 candle from Alkeme last year and I’ve since bought 3 more to gift to friends. It is such a beautiful scent (a floral fragrance centred around the Tuberrose flower; it is fresh and green, with rich undernotes of vetiver and delicate fruity top notes of blossom) burns so well, and lasts so long.

I’m constantly on a fun new brand hunt - particularly those who are making in responsible volumes or using kinder materials. If you’ve found any, please share in the comments!

So, on that note, here are some outfits that I’ve worn (and remembered to photograph) in December & January. It’s been cold and pretty miserable here in London, but I’ve done my best to make the effort, re-wear what I already have, and make any new additions to my wardrobe, responsible ones. December provided some great opportunities to get a little more glam - a dress code that historically has made me feel the need to get all new clothes. I’m proud that it is ingrained in me now to try the more sustainable route of outfit planning first, and I managed to create (what I think) are fun outfits with just 1 or 2 new elements, instead of full new looks.

Outfit 1: Girls dinner!

If you’ve seen my previous posts, you’ll have seen this Reformation top before. It’s so comfortable, easy to style, and has great outfit elevating power. It transcends trends and seasons and is fast becoming a staple in my ‘dressy’ top rotation. I wore it with & Other Stories suit trousers that I’ve had for 4+ years and black heels. Simple, but effective!

Outfit 2: Vogue Business Fashion Futures Summit

I attended the Vogue Business Fashion Futures Summit and wanted to feel comfortable, but in my business mode. I paired a shoulder pad (Isabel Marant inspired) Mango jumper that I’ve had for 3+ years with some Bershka white tailored trousers that I’ve had for 6+ years. I finished the outfit with H&M heel boots that I bought in 2023 and have worn endlessly!

Outfit 3: Pub lunch

Simple, comfy, and made significantly cooler by this Whistles jacket that was one of my 8 new purchases in 2024. My go-to finishing touch when I want to add something more interesting to what is quite a simple look, is to put my hair in a scraped back bun. Works every time, and especially good if you’re like me and don’t always have the energy to style your hair.

Outfit 4: Girls night, as part of a weekend in Paris

As part of a girls weekend to Paris, we planned a compulsory glam night. I had a vision in my head of the outfit I wanted to create, so purchased this beaded Topshop skirt to pair with an oversized white tee and my much loved wedding shoes (these Alaia heels) The skirt wore really well, and whilst it definitely isn’t a year-round item, I plan on utilising it to summer trips to Ibiza, and more party/festive dressing in the future!

Outfit 5: NYE

Your girls favourite shoes were back for NYE! The cost per wear of my wedding shoes has even surpassed my expectations. They are so comfortable & fun - I really am obsessed. I wore them with a lace skirt that I got on Asos, that I then paired with a pre-owned blazer that I bought pre-owned on vinted. It was a real business on the top, party on the bottom situation - loved it!

Outfit 6: January work meetings

My favourite winter weather in London - sunny but cold! I have been loving these spanx leggings that I bought a few years ago as a warm, comfy base layer for autumn/winter. I’ve been wearing them with these Massimo Dutti boots that I got as a Christmas present, and paired everything here with an old Zara brown shearling jacket.

Despite it being sunny and 19 degrees celsius last week in London, the autumn/winter season has very much made it’s grand entrance in the fashion world. My IG feed and inbox are full of chocolate brown suede trench coats, the latest winter sambas iteration and fun new knits.

Not only is it still too warm for most of that, but I also don’t need any of it. My wardrobe is full, my drawers are full, and yet, so is my cart. Even with the consciousness that I have around how I don’t need anything new this winter, I’ve still found myself wanting so much. And so, if I have, I’m guessing quite a few of you have too. So, here’s a breakdown of the temptations that I face year after year during the autumn/winter season, and how I resist them whilst still trying to dress cute. A consumption cheat sheet for the months ahead, if you will.

The September Splurge Struggle

I find September (and Q4 in general) the time that I spend the most money on clothes (this doesn’t lend itself well to me and my 5 new things limit of 2024, which to be transparent, is already at capacity - read more on that here)

I’ll be honest - I have a few items in a few carts dotted around the internet right now. But instead of scrolling the new in pages of my favourite retailers, I’ve found that scrolling Pinterest is just as fun, and drives an even cheaper, and more planet-friendly wardrobe solution than the new items you were about to hit buy on.

Create a Pinterest board of the looks you want to wear, then go to your wardrobe (or your flatmates/husbands/mums) and make as much of it as you can out of what you already own. I have done this for every season this year, and honestly it shocks me every time how much I felt I needed something new, when I had something basically the same all along. I’ve put a few examples of my Pinterest-to-reality outfits below:

Denim structured shirt & suede boots: Depop last year | Jeans: Mango (1/5 new items in 2024) I’d throw a trench or shearling jacket on top for colder weather.

2 year old Uniqlo cashmere jumper, Asos maxi midi skirt (rolled up or down for day to night styling) Old adidas sambas, Alaia Heels (my wedding shoes that I re-wear all the time!) I’d throw a leather jacket on top for colder weather.

Old-clothes (new outfits) October

By this point, you’ve (hopefully) resisted the immediate flurry of newness and that adrenaline of getting new season items before anyone else has expired. However, by this point in London at least, the temperature does start to drop and I face the challenge of remembering how to dress well in winter. With any city living, especially if you use public transport that takes you from cold to overheated in seconds, you are required to nail the art of layering.

It’s now that I plan on allowing myself some (old) newness, in the form of one or two wish list pieces via the second hand market. I find that by this point, the online carts full of new styles are long forgotten, and you’ve had time to reflect on your wardrobe, and the wish list pieces that are love VS lust. Some key pieces that I’ve bought that have proven to be incredible for all-winter wear, worn alone in September/October and layered up to be worn even on the coldest of days are:

A good denim shirt to layer with

An oversized black blazer

A shearling gilet (if you subscribe, you’ve seen mine worn almost weekly)

November and the consumption ick

Interestingly, my fashion consumption has, in recent years, completely fallen off in November. The tiresome engine that is Black Friday and the endless ‘buy this’ messaging pushes me to my limits, making it the month that I also unsubscribe from the most newsletters, and unfollow the most influencers.

I also start to shift from lusting after the things that I want, and move to the gift-buying mindset, and so naturally, my personal consumption drops completely. I don’t have much advice for this month, other than to lean into this. What can you do for others, instead of yourself. It’s always healthy to shift your mindset from ‘me’ to ‘them’ whenever you can. Family, or strangers.

December and THE sale shopping strategy

December is also almost entirely a no-shopping month for me; something that comes quite naturally as I continue to focus on perfecting gifts for my favourite people. That is, until the sales hit.

Sales shopping is a fine art that I’ve finessed over years. It takes all year to prepare for. This Substack is about enjoying fashion in a less damaging way, and so obviously buying nothing is better than buying something, but, I’m personally seeking a balance between sustainable consumption and enjoying getting dressed. So yeah, I have a sale shopping strategy. Sue me!

All year, I add pieces I love into carts. Net-A-Porter, The Outnet, Mytheresa, the list goes on and on. As the year progresses, I naturally edit the list down, constantly reassessing what I actually still want, and taking out anything that was added without consideration or as a nod to a fleeting trend. By the time December comes, my wish lists are small, concise and ready for mark-downs. Truly, I only ever buy one item. But, it’s an item I’ve wanted, considered for a long time, and got at a good price. Not to mention, the indescribable victory you feel for getting something you want so badly at 50% off.

At the same time as I finish writing this, I’ve added a coat to my Farfetch cart, mulled it over for 20 mins, and closed the tab again.

Resistance. For now! Go me.

London’s weather is flip flopping this week. We have 24 degree celsius weather on the horizon (apparently) but right now, I’m…cold? I feel wintery, I’ve reached for knitwear and leather jackets, and I NEARLY lit my winter candle on Thursday (I resisted) So here’s what I wore in the confusing weather.

Outfit 1 - Casual dinner with friends.

The jacket is new and another addition to the 5 new things I’m buying in 2024. If you missed my 9 month update on what I’ve bought so far, you can read that here. I wore it with a cropped grey jumper that I bought last year from Zara, and some old white Stradivarius tailored trousers that I’ve had for 3+ years. They’re long, but don’t skirt the floor, making them much easier to keep clean and enjoy for longer. Finally I reached for my trusty sambas (I recently washed them and cleaned up the suede to keep them looking fresher) and my Bottega clutch.

Outfit 2 - Press meetings

Whenever I meet with (fashion) journalists for my work, I like to make more of an effort (IMO - you may think otherwise lol) The structured denim shirt and suede boots are both Depop buys that I got my hands on at the start of 2023, and I paired it with my baggy Mango jeans. It was perfect for the weird in between weather and I loved how this turned out!

Outfit 3 - Travelling to West Wales

I had a 5 hour journey to beautiful West Wales for a family weekend of long beach walks and board games. I opted for comfort with baggy jeans that I got last year from Zara, with an old white tee and old black bomber jacket. Everything was pulled together with my black YSL belt (small size) from 5 years ago and my trusty adidas sambas. The minute I arrived in Wales, I stayed in activewear and big jumpers until we left. This was as exciting as my weekend outfits got!

I was supposed to update this every 3 months in 2024. I’ve blinked and it’s September. So here is a 9 month update of everything NEW that I’ve bought so far this year. My goal was to only buy 5 new fashion items, and whilst I haven’t yet technically failed, I’m now at my 5 (with 4 months of the year still to go - SOS)

That being said, I’m proud of myself. I’ve resisted so much ‘buy this’ noise, and turned my back on trendy pieces being hard-sold to me via IG, Pinterest, influencers etc that I knew I wouldn’t be wearing in 6-12 months time.

As talked about in this piece, this shopping limit has been the most transformative exercise for moulding new, better consumption habits, and it has put me more in touch with my sense of personal taste than ever. Even if I break my 5 new purchases rule by 1 or 2 by the end of 2024 - it will still be a far cry away from the mindless, high volume shopping I used to partake in. So yeah, I feel good! And importantly to me, I still love and am enjoying fashion and the process of getting dressed more than ever.

So here’s all the new stuff that I’ve bought so far.

April - September

Free People Dress - worn this all summer. Obsessed. A summer staple for many years to come.

Asos Dress - worn this twice. I love it, but it needs work. The fabric is thin, which whilst it’s perfect for vacation, feels tricky to wear underwear with that doesn’t feel too risky in city / work mode. My seamstress is going to try and sew in an ultra thin lining for me! I feel SO confident in it and I love the colour & it’s modest full coverage.

Whistles Leather Jacket - my latest buy and I love it. I’ll be wearing this on repeat this Autumn/Winter. I have one other leather jacket that I got in a vintage shop when I was 19. It’s really cropped and not really my vibe right now, but I’ve kept it for future styling!

Finally, I got the below bag as a gift x used nearly expired gift vouchers. I haven’t counted it in my new purchases for that reason but I felt I should disclaim! A forever piece - I could not love it more.

Bottega Veneta Clutch

I wanted to end this piece with a quote from a recent post by . This really summarised how I feel towards adding pieces to my wardrobe right now. I don’t want to buy 5 new things a month because WhoWhatWear told me to, or because my Instagram made me feel like what I already have isn’t ‘cool’ enough. I want to add pieces because I see them and my heart skips a beat, and because I’ll feel amazing wearing it now, in a year, in 5 years, and in 10 years (and beyond - you get the idea)

My journey to enjoying fashion in a more sustainable way is becoming more about celebrating what I already have, with the occasional new addition that becomes a life long wardrobe member. Do I still have a wish list of items that I want to buy? Sure. But the list is small, more considered and full of things that will be loved for a long time, not just a season.

I have the privilege to be building a staple wardrobe made up of high quality items that in theory should last me a long time. That being said, if you read my What I Wore This Week series, you’ll know that I also have a number of high-street, inexpensive items that I’ve had, and plan on having, for a long time. Over the last few years, I’ve gathered a few easy-to-implement practises and rituals that give my wardrobe the princess treatment it deserves. In return, my clothes last longer and look better. I hope these are helpful!

1. Sorry to start with something painfully obvious, but take care of your things.

   Keep your bags and shoes in dust bags and boxes, and keep all of your clothes and accessories out of direct sunlight (this can impact their colours) Avoid water exposure on anything leather, and read the care labels so you know what each item’s needs are.

   Protect garment, shoes and accessories by storing them kindly. Don’t throw everything on top of each other like Chiara Ferragni - this image gives me palpitations.

   

2. Wash your garments on cooler, more gentle wash settings.

   A 7 year research programme found this week that clothes including jeans and T-shirts can last more than 50% longer with gentler wash conditions. There is also a 20-25% reduction in Global Warming Potential by shifting from 40°C to 30°C washes. Read more on this research here.

3. And on the topic of washing…does it even need washing? Enter: natural fabric spray.

   Venetia La Manna introduced me to this a while ago via one of her YouTube videos, and it has been a game changer. So many of the well made items we wear, particularly those made from natural fibres (wool, cashmere etc) don’t need frequent washing because of their naturally breathable qualities. Instead, once I’ve worn a jumper all day, I’ll hang it in an open space and give it a spray. I use this with denim too! I love this one.

I should mention here, for those that aren’t aware, reducing the need to wash things unless essential (excluding intimates - go ahead and wash those, please!) is another way you can reduce your environmental footprint, and this is another way that natural fabric sprays can be effective. It is now widely acknowledged that our (synthetic fiber) clothes shed microplastics when we wash them. These microfibers, which are stripped and carried off by friction and turbulence in the washing machine, enter our wastewater, eventually ending up in the environment - this is bad.

According to the New York Times:

“There is almost nowhere on earth that plastics haven’t been found, not even in the depths of the ocean. In October 2020, scientists in Australia published a study estimating that 9.25 to 15.86 million tons of microplastics can be found on the ocean floor. Or, as The New York Times reported: 18 to 24 shopping bags full of small plastic fragments for every foot of coastline on every continent except Antarctica.”

Wash cooler, wash less, use natural fabric spray. It will give you longer lasting garments and you’ll be reducing your footprint at the same time.

Anyway, back to the tips!

4. Own a debobbler

   10 years ago, if a jumper of mine became bobbly, I’d charity shop it. I’ve wasted so many beautiful garments because I thought that when they didn’t look the same as they did when I bought them, that I disregarded them as ‘broken’. This is wrong on so many levels - not least because some things are better aged and imperfect. I have an amazon Debobbler that I use so much, especially during the winter season, and my knitwear and wool coats, regardless of how old they are, feel good-as-new.

5. Use all of the garment bags!

   Any clothing that has more sensitive, delicate fabric should be kept in a garment bag. You can buy these on amazon and they’re a great way to ensure nothing gets pulled or damaged whilst in your wardrobe. I mainly use these for coats and dresses, and for thin, embellished or silk materials that I feel need extra protection.

   Hack: Keep all the garment bags that you receive new items in, they’ll help you store things better, and for longer. I also always keep my clothes in the dry cleaning covers they are returned in for safer storage (and less moth risk!)

6. Own leather wipes

   If you want to keep your leather shoes and bags feeling clean and fresh, invest in some leather wipes that can maintain your items without damaging the fabric. I love these from Amazon.

7. You don’t need new trainers, you just need new laces.

   I don’t buy designer trainers, but even the low to mid ranged styles deserve a long, happy life. I like my trainers to look fresh (it’s a big no, Golden Goose) so when they start to appear worn, I 1) Delicates wash them in a thick pillow case 2) Buy new laces. This breathes new life into them time after time. As an extra hack, keep the old laces and use them for outfit styling - idea below!

6. Buy less, treasure more. Cliche, but true.

   Since I’ve been cutting down my consumption, I’ve been less distracted by ‘newness’ in my wardrobe, and more focussed on continuing to enjoy and treasure the items I already have. I think when you have less, you take care of more. Instead of desperately searching for an ‘on-trend’ new season coat, I’m so excited to dig out the styles I already have, and have already started outfit planning in my head!

It’s a dress special! Between a sunny London (finally) and a 4 day trip to Morocco for a wedding, it has been a week of DRESSing up. I’ve worn items I’ve had for years, rented pieces, and purchased new (justification pending) Looking at my pictures, it’s quite clear I am an entirely different dresser in the summer vs the winter. There isn’t a monochrome look in sight - go me! As an added extra, this week you get some complimentary Marrakesh recommendations too. You are welcome!

Outfit 1: Dinner in London with my husband

I bought this dress from Zara in 2020 and have worn it at least 30 times. It’s plisse fabric makes it light and extremely comfortable, and I adore the high neck, maxi length and asymmetric cut out. When I say this dress does it all, I am not over exaggerating. I’ve worn this to black tie weddings and to picnics in the park (and everything in between) Despite so much use, it is showing no signs of wear, and I plan on enjoying this dress for many years to come. I wore it with a pair of old Asos sandals that I purchased in 2021, and my Bottega Andiamo clutch.

Outfit 2: Work meetings and dinner in London

I met the lovely Liza from Every Body Gets Dressed for lunch, and then a friend for dinner on an extremely hot day in London, so wanted something cool but cute. I opted for one of my new 2024 purchases - this Free People dress (an updated 2024 purchases post is coming!) It’s so light and airy, and it’s elasticated ruched body makes it incredibly comfortable. I’m a sucker for a dress with a fun back - for me it’s the magic ingredient to turn a simple dressing day into an outfit that feels considered and stylish.

Outfit 3: Marrakesh dressing - dinner at Royal Mansour

I then went to Morocco! My husband and I were celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary, so we booked a few days at the beautiful Les Cinq Djellabas and had the most incredible dinner at La Grande Brasserie restaurant at the Royal Mansour. I wanted to be respectful to their modest dress code, so purchased this beautiful dress from Asos. I received so many compliments and felt so comfortable in it - it’s stomach drape is extremely flattering! I have another middle eastern trip coming up later in the year, and a long sleeve dress is always useful when you live in the UK, so I know I’ll get plenty of use out of it. To ensure I can maintain it’s quality for a long time, I’ve washed it on hand wash settings only. I wore it with a simple pair of white Asos sandals that I’ve had for 5+ years.

Outfit 4: Marrakesh dressing - dinner at Nomad

For a more casual dinner, we visited Nomad. I bought this dress from Nasty Gal in 2018 and it is one of my all-time favourites. The colour, cut and frill shoulder lapel makes for such a pretty outfit with minimal effort.

Once again - this dress has proven to me that as long as you take care of your clothes, affordable items can last a long time too.

Outfit 5: The wedding day look!

After a few days alone, my husband and I headed to our friends wedding at the beautiful Villa Taj (you can also hire this out for big parties - it is beautiful!) I rented this dress from the Australian brand Arcina Ori via HURR and loved it! The backless style really lent itself to keeping me cooler in the 43 degree temperature. Honestly, I love rental fashion - I lived out my Andie Anderson dreams in this dress (IYKYK)

A New York Times article this week cited that social media users are ‘moving away from influencer culture’ in the latest Underconsumption Core trend. ‘Instead of pristine shelves, makeup bags with the latest products and fashion fads, users are posting simplified closets, and secondhand clothes that have lasted years..’

Normal is apparently now trending. Due to my work (as a sustainable fashion PR) I’ve observed this consumer sentiment for some time. An example of this is the work I do with my brands and partnering with influencers on a paid basis. This has moved really far down my list of priorities in terms of strategy, because it doesn’t come across as organic, authentic or ‘normal’. The often out-of-reach recommendations from top tier fashion influencers feel increasingly distasteful during a sensitive economic period and amongst a growing consciousness around the climate crisis and the impact our consumption is having on worsening this.

I feel this in my own social media experience too. This week I have been sent to the following pages by influencer links who have caught me in a moment of weakness. I didn’t buy anything.

• Adanola gym set (this would have set me back £75)

• Saint Laurent dress (I was curious - I’m not spending £3,000 on anything anytime soon)

• Mason Pearson hairbrush (over £100. Literally, what?)

• Tove blouse (£340)

Not only do I not need any of these items, but If I were to consume everything I was influenced to engage with, I’d be B R O K E and way past my ‘5 new things’ shopping limit of 2024. For me personally, the latter is my biggest driver in resisting the ‘you need this’ mentality that influencers play a part in creating. I set out to consume more responsibly this year, with the goal of having a lower environmental impact, and as a (welcomed) byproduct of that, saving some money.

Others, according to this New York Times article by Remy Tumin, are leaning towards ‘Underconsumption Core’ (which is defined as ‘buying and using only what you need) due to feeling disconnected with how unrealistic the lives of influencers are, as well as economic hardship and wanting to live more sustainably.

The piece very importantly shares the view that Underconsumption Core may well be a temporary and pretty predictable response to economic downturn, as well as an arguably inevitable downward spike after the crazy peak of consumption that took place during the COVID pandemic. Both of those things may well be true, but I don’t think they take away from the significance of underconsumption, slowing down and using what we have as a monumental win in the critical need for the volume and speed that we shop (and therefore that brands produce) to change.

The optimist in me senses a step change, not just in this latest trend, but in the wider consumption space more generally. We’re realising we don’t need as much. We’re realising we don’t need newness all the time. I hear it in the conversations that I have with editors, influencers and industry analysts. I hear it in the conversations me and my girlfriends have over brunch. And now, we’re seeing it on our algorithms. The same algorithms that historically have been a driver of ‘you need more’ messaging. A glimmer of hope, perhaps?

That being said, there is a (possibly controversial) part of me - perhaps the fashion lover more than anything else, that still feels there is still a place on my feed for those aspirational influencer photo dumps. It isn’t to make me want to shop more. But the full Saint Laurent outfit that Morgan Stewart posted while on her private yacht, which is miles away from my reality, gave me some joy, escapism and fantasy. The £3,000 dress with it’s chic black fit and gorgeous pom pom heels? Well, I still seek inspiration from that, and saved the look to recreate it using pieces I already own. Judging by the 35,000 likes, I’m not the only one who enjoyed it.

I love that ‘real life’ is becoming championed, and whilst I personally still appreciate the occasional dose of escapism and inspiration of (mostly unattainable) outfit posts from the fashion fleet, I believe the Underconsumption Core trend has the potential to be a snowball of changing consumer mindset that gains more and more momentum - a necessary behavioural shift if we’re going to exist in a more sustainable fashion future one day.

In case you can’t tell from the outfits in this post, London’s summer has not been the warm, sunny season I had hoped to get dressed for. Summer styling is my favourite, but a mix of rain and muggy grey days has meant I’ve felt a little uninspired. When I look over the casual outfit snaps that I’ve taken (real life bedroom mess included, as always) it’s my accessories that bring me the most joy. Shoes, bags, jewellery, belts. They have been the glimmer of outfit joy in my dressing this week - especially when I don’t have the exciting ‘newness’ buzz to lean on. Once again, no new garments feature in this post. Enjoy!

Outfit 1: Dinner with friends

I wore my husband’s oversized t-shirt with my much-adored vintage shearling gilet that I bought from a market in Japan last year. To bring a glimmer of summer styling to what was a very grey day, I wore my 3 year old white tailored trousers from Asos. Finally, my suede Elleme is the dreamy finishing touch. Whenever I wear this bag, I say ‘I love this bag’ on repeat.

Outfit 2: Work Meetings

I forgot to get a mirror snap of this, but I had a few casual work meetings to attend. I wore my mid wash straight leg jeans with my adidas sambas, and an oversized bright blue shirt. To make it feel more elevated, I added my brown Loewe belt.

Outfit 3: Errands

There isn’t anything I haven’t talked about a million times in this outfit already, but this bag needs a special shout out. This vegan bag from Greek brand Mashu is my go-to. It’s made from plant based leather, and the handles are crafted from wood offcuts from a local furniture factory. The quality is unmatched - I have worn it for YEARS and it’s condition remains flawless. I love how unique it is.

Outfit 4: Dinner with friends

I’m really in my double denim era and loving it. This outfit was one of my favourites that I’ve worn in a while - I just felt good. My 2/5 purchases of 2024 - the baggy mango jeans, were worn with old Zara sandals (+6 years old) and a pre-owned denim shirt that I got from Depop. I added my white Elleme bag, and it needed nothing more.

Today, I consecutively read the following two news headlines:

According to eBay, nearly 90% of consumers bought or sold used items in the last 12 months.

Vinted has over 61,800,000 Zara items listed right now.

This is the broken, overcrowded, high-speed rollercoaster that is the circular fashion industry right now. I know, I want to get off too.

Having spent a lot of time with different friendship groups lately, I have felt a ray of optimism in the knowledge that more than ever, my friends who aren’t particular interested in fashion or sustainability, are more into buying second hand than ever before. My peers are renting, re-selling and buying pre-owned at the same rate, if not more, than buying new - a noticeable shift from our collective behaviours 5 years ago.

The eBay story underscores this sentiment as something being adopted globally, and reflects a real shift in consumer mindset - a key ingredient in the recipe to creating a better fashion future. The story goes on to share that eBay sales of apparel and accessories with “thrifted” in its item description grew over 400% globally from March 2023 to March 2024, and half of eBay’s sellers reported an increase in selling pre-loved compared to 1-5 years ago.

When it comes to the circular industry, this latest set of data should feel like a win, demonstrating a willingness from citizens to lean into circularity, and showing evidence that people are decoupling the idea of ‘used’ as undesirable.

BUT, just as we’re revelling in this small shift towards positive change, Zara has to come along and ruin it all with their 61.8 MILLION items listed on Vinted right now (disclaimer: other brands like H&M, Shein, Primark and Mango are also listing at huge volumes)

Holiday edition! I’ve been in Naxos, Greece - a laid back, untouched island full of quaint tavernas, beautiful sunsets and the best tzatziki I’ve ever tasted. I have thoroughly enjoyed styling a vacation wardrobe made up of almost nothing new (just 2 new items to be exact, plus a few pre-owned finds that I’m excited to show off to you!)

Outfit 1:

This Rhode Pia dress is such a flattering fit. I’ve had this silhouette from Rhode on my wish list for ages, but knew I wanted to find it pre-owned. This particular style came up on my vinted in April and I couldn’t resist. I wore it on holiday with a brown flat sandal - the easiest outfit that felt really pretty and put together.

Outfit 2:

This dress is about 6 years old, and from PLT. I bought this back when I was much less educated on PLT’s unethical production practises, but really love the dress and feel strongly that the most sustainable clothes are the ones we already own. The quality isn’t amazing (no surprises there) and the straps have broken once before, but I have since taken it to my local seamstress who has reinforced the straps, so I can enjoy it for as long as possible. I wore this with one of my new purchases of 2024 (3/5). I have been hunting this sold-out Bottega Veneta Andiamo clutch down for months, and a lovely SA in Selfridges London helped me get my hands on it for my birthday. It’s so roomy, so chic, and I can’t wait to wear it dressed up and dressed down for many years to come.

Outfit 3:

Meet purchase 4/5 of my 2024 new items (I know, I only have 1 buy left. I’m sweating too) but I had this Free People denim romper on my wish list since January and decided to bite the bullet in May. I’m obsessed with the fit, and the effortlessness of it, and it’s already proven to be both perfect for summer in the city and vacation dressing.

Outfit 4:

A less glamorous look, but I’m here to normalise real-life, thrown on outfits, as well as the carefully curated, elevated ones. My top is a one shoulder knitted tank that I acquired in a sample ‘chuck out’ during my time working at Urban Outfitters over 10 years ago. With careful washing and my trusty de-bobbler, it’s still one of my go-to summer tops. I paired it with another epic pre-owned Missoni purchase that I made 4 years ago on Depop. These shorts have the most beautiful metallic rainbow thread, and are playful, high quality and extremely comfortable (elasticated waist band to a greek taverna is always a yes)

I really know what items I want in my wardrobe, and am shopping with more intention than ever before (as well as shopping WAY less) I have always found vacation outfits the most tempting to buy new for. My (almost) nothing-new Naxos wardrobe made me both proud of my restraint, and impressed at how much I enjoyed re-styling items I already own.

If someone asked me if I thought I had taste, I would probably answer ‘no’. To me, taste has always been associated with an elite eye for curation, be that in your wardrobe, home or even, for the last decade, your socials. To label someone as tasteful has historically, in my view, been the ultimate compliment, and I think I’d feel a little obnoxious to self-proclaim that I myself had taste.

That being said, as I come up to 6 months of buying just 5 new things this year, the slower shopping pace, and the new need to heavily consider each and every purchase, has delivered an unexpected perk - I think I’m finding my taste again (tbc if I ever had any in the first place)

The Oxford dictionary describes taste as ‘a person's tendency to like or be interested in something’ and I think without much thought, we could all list a few things we’re ‘loving right now’. But I wonder, how many of those things have been shown to you via your social feed or popped up while you were web browsing? Are they really things you authentically are compelled to want, or have you been subconsciously instructed to want them?

When thinking about this more, I became interested in how the internet, and specifically algorithms, may have sucked the individuality out of not just me, but many people and places. This brilliant podcast from New York Times writer Ezra Klein was the ultimate fuel to the fire of this thought.

Work has been crazy of late, and so these outfit photos are being posted a little late. It’s now sunny & warm in London, so summer looks are on the horizon (F I N A L L Y) That being said, I hope the below outfits are inspiring for the awkward, in between weather dressing that I know I always struggle with.

Outfit 1: Casual dinner with friends

We need to talk about this coat. My Dad got me this & Other Stories hourglass wool coat for Christmas 5 years ago, and it is my favourite coat in my wardrobe. It has a cinched waist, subtle shoulder padding and a structure that is incredibly flattering. The colour is the perfect camel, and it makes every outfit I wear it with feel so put together. The cost per wear of this is epic. I paired it with a long sleeve & Other stories top that I’ve had for 3+ years, my trusty Asos jeans and adidas Sambas. For accessories, I wore some vintage Chanel stud earrings and my YSL Kate bag that I purchased in 2018. Nothing new, nothing overly ‘trend’ driven, but I really love this look.

Outfit 2: Work meetings

If this outfit feels similar to outfits in all my other posts, that’s because it is! Capsule wardrobe girly reporting for duty. As my base I opted for my old boyfriend-fit faux leather trousers from Mango, with an old white H&M t-shirt. I layered on an oversized double breasted blazer, that I got from Reiss in the 2023 Christmas sale, and I’m blown away by the quality. I tried on a Saint Laurent blazer in Selfridges last year that was ££££ and this feels and fits identically. I’m contemplating getting it taken up slightly so it’s a little less long, but other than that, I’m certain it’s a forever jacket. The outfit is finished off with my Kitty Joyas necklace and uniqlo cashmere jumper, which was worn in equal parts finishing touch / emergency warm layer, that sadly, is still needed in London right now.

Outfit 3: Errands

Taken in the bathroom of my Drs surgery - chic, I know. I had a million errands to run, and I was feeling like I needed to be comfortable. My husband referenced this as a ‘pyjama’ outfit, which I was overjoyed with. The trousers are over 6 years old from H&M, my t-shirt is pre-owned Stella McCartney, my blazer is an old oversized Zara number, and my trench is asos via Depop, which is also 7+ years old. The bag is a vegan leather braided tote that I found on Etsy, and get asked about all of the time. It was £75, is amazing quality, and fits my life in it. I’ve included a link here.

Welcome to volume 2 of pretty, not purchased! This column is a list of things I’ve come across and loved in recent weeks, but consciously, have not bought. It’s goal is not to ‘de-influence’ but instead normalise the appreciation of lovely things, without feeling the pressure to own them.

After bookmarking items that I’ve come across in the last few weeks, I’ve realised how useful this particular column has been so far in helping me figure out what my own personal taste is (and do my best to ignore the things that every social media platform tells me are ‘tasteful’) It’s becoming both therapeutic and informative to review the items that I’ve wanted to include in this, and I hope you enjoy a few minutes of simply admiring pretty things, that by the way, you absolutely don’t need to buy.

1. Farm Rio Tapestry Red Shorts and Top Combo

B Corp brand with commendable sustainability and transparency efforts, Farm Rio is the summer label I can’t get enough of at the moment. This co-ord gives Zimmerman vibes, but is kinder to both the planet and your purse. I think it’s totally gorgeous and I plan on keeping an eye out for this on the second hand market in coming years.

2. Scape Wall Light by Stem

I love the hammered, organic looking shape of these. I’d put these straight up as feature lights either side of my bed’s headboard. My bedroom is my sanctuary, and so I like it to feel decluttered and calming. I think adding unique wall lights are a great way to add some interest and personality to a space without it feeling busy.

3. Pre-owned Suede Celine Bag via Vestiaire Collective

Love this bag, but just don’t need this bag. If you have read my last few posts, you’ll know I’m crushing hard on suede bags, and I think this is a really great investment style. In my view, suede just gets better with time, and I think this (if looked after properly) paired with a floral dress or white tee and jeans will look gorgeous now, and in a decades time.

4. Handmade Blue Ceramic Mugs by NAFCeramics

I’m a sucker for ceramics, and these pretty mugs are perfect for my cups of tea (at least 3 a day - I hate coffee) My mug cupboard is an eclectic collection of pretty mugs I’ve acquired over the years. Each one symbolises a period in my life, or place I’ve visited. Nothing matches, and I love it that way. These are pricey, but I am very much enjoying admiring them from afar!

When I first embarked on this challenge (for me, it really is a challenge) I was so caught up on the actual limit of just 5 items, that I didn’t stop to think about how it would genuinely help reframe the idea of consumption in my own mind. Now that I’m 3 months in, the overwhelming learning thus far, and the most obvious benefit, is that of simply S L O W I N G D O W N.

Fashion today, whether you’re shopping at Zara or Mytheresa, is inherently fast. According to Business of Fashion, Zara release an average of 500 new designs a week, and Mytheresa drop newness Monday - Friday all year round. For the most part, regardless of budget or brand, we are constantly being offered new, better, more.

For part of a project that I’m working on for a fashion brand client this month, we carried out a customer survey, with one question asking ‘When are you most engaged with our brand?’

The most popular response, chosen over things like the brand’s valiant sustainable education content or the creative, visual assets they share was ‘I am more engaged when the brand launches new styles’. In second place was ‘I am more engaged when the brand runs discounts and sales.’ A worrying, but probably not surprising, top two choices.

We are instructed constantly to want and acquire new. New is marketed as aspirational. The true state of the fashion consumption mindset in 2024? More is more. From social media, to press (in all it’s forms - Substacks included) to even catching up with friends and clocking their brand new bag or shoes - it’s near impossible to escape the social settings, marketing machines and perfectly oiled algorithms that scream messages of ‘YOU NEED THIS’ or ‘SHOP NOW’.

The rule of 5 hasn’t turned down this noise, but instead, has forced me to see it, hear it, and yes, still want stuff, but actively decide, nope. It has forced me to slow down, think more, and buy only the stuff I really, really want.

What’s surprised me more, is that I don’t feel deprived. I’m enjoying fashion just as much as I did a year ago, and actually feel more in touch with my own sense of taste and style than ever before. So, here’s what I’ve purchased so far!

Item 1/5 of new things joining my wardrobe in 2024:

The Elleme Raisin Suede Congac in Brown | £436

I’ve wanted a suede bag for ages, but was looking for something that still felt contemporary. Sadly, the suede brown Birkin that I’ve been adding to my pinterest board for forever (see inspo below) is a little out of reach…

…but this Elleme bag has given me everything I wanted and more.

Item 2/5 of new things joining my wardrobe in 2024:

Mango Loose Mid-Rise Wide Leg Jeans £49.99

Last summer I found myself gravitating towards wider leg fits, but never found the right style. On a day never intended for shopping, I found myself early for an appointment, and went into the only shop open; Mango.

These jeans were hideous on the hanger, but the wash & button detailing around the waist compelled me to try them. Surprisingly, I was obsessed with the fit, length and how comfy they were (mid rise means no digging in when sat down!) I didn’t buy them right away, and instead went back in to try them on two more times, before taking the plunge. To date, I’ve only worn them with my adidas sambas and heeled boots, but I’m really looking forward to re-creating looks like the below with them this Spring/Summer!

Denim side note: I have a strict rule with jeans, that regardless of trends, I never, ever rotate them out of my wardrobe. I had a pair that hadn’t felt ‘stylish’ for years, and now, they’re back to being one of my most worn jeans.

Ps. I hope the unpolished backgrounds of these photos make you feel less like you need to be existing in an interiors showroom. My duvet is lumpy and not ironed, not all clothes have been put away, and my mirror needs a clean.

Outfit 1: Casual dinner with a friend

To meet a friend for a casual dinner, I opted for baggy. This silk Uniqlo shirt was a sale find at under £30 nearly 10 years ago, and is a fail-safe for me. I love silky shirts for their ability to elevate any outfit, and to fall effortlessly on the body, unlike cotton shirts which I often find myself having to re-style and faff with throughout the day. I paired it with one of my 5 new purchases of 2024 - these baggy mango jeans, and my H&M kitten heel boots which I purchased in Spring 2023. Finally, the look is *made* by an old chunky gold chain necklace, and my Elleme suede bag, that I literally cannot stop wearing. It is purchase 2 of 5 new things I’m buying in 2024, and boy oh boy was it a good one.

Outfit 2: On set with a client

A client of mine was shooting her gorgeous SS24 collection, and my outfit goal was to keep it very casual. I needed clothes that weren’t restricting (I ran up and down the studio stairs about 30 times with various boxes/bags) and were lightweight (photo studios are normally always pumped with hot air to keep the model warm)

I opted for my wide long sleeve tee from & Other Stories which is a few years old now (but they do the same style in other colours) with my vintage shearling gilet layered on top (it gives Isabel Marant vibes and I love it) In case you haven’t seen my previous outfit diaries, I got this gilet from a vintage market in Japan, and wear it a few times every week, without fail. My trousers are a pair of H&M high waisted loose linens, which I wore with my sambas.

Outfit 3: Meetings & Dinner

Surprise! London got cold again. This outfit felt comfy, casual but still the right amount of ‘put together’ that I personally seek with anything I wear out the house. I wore my Topshop jeans that are coming up to 7 years old, with the same H&M kitten heel boots that you read about above. As you can see, I wear these boots so much - the heel height is just right for day-to-night dressing. My t-shirt is Uniqlo, and my jumper is from sustainable cashmere brand MYCASHMERE. They use recycled and responsibly sourced cashmere, and reinvest into building more sustainable infrastructure in the knitwear industry, as well as ensuring soil, herder and goat welfare amongst their suppliers. Layered on top is my wool coat that I got as Christmas present 2 years ago from Zara, worn with my Elleme bag.

In March, France’s government backed a string of measures to make low-cost, fast fashion less attractive to shoppers, including the addition of an environmental charge on low-cost garments, with €5 (£4.20) added to the cost of an item planned from 2025, rising to €10 by 2030. The charge however, cannot exceed 50% of an item’s price tag.

Whilst these measures still need to pass a vote at the senate, even at this initial stage, the announcement sparked some interesting reflections across the fashion industry. One comment on this particular news story, rang true to a sentiment often prevalent in the conversation around sustainability as a privilege. A reader said:

“The brands listed (in this news story) make durable basics: clothing essentials like underwear and socks, at relatively low prices, which is great for parents clothing kids and on a budget. How is that punishable ‘fast fashion’? 50% of Primark’s sales are in this category, which is not ‘fashion’ at all, it’s essential clothing.”

It made me re-visit a theme that I’ve discussed with friends and colleagues numerous times over the last few years around the idea that for some, sustainability is a luxury that can’t always be afforded.

The argument the reader of this news story was making, and the argument you’ve probably heard many times before, is that there are people who simply need to shop from cheap stores. Their only priority is to find items they can afford - something that ‘fast-fashion’ stores achieve because they use cheap, synthetic materials and pay garment workers below living wages. For many, to consider how their purchase impacts the planet or the people that made their item, is not something they have the luxury of considering.

When it comes to creating a more sustainable fashion industry, it feels we have come to a cross roads. There is an urgent and undeniable necessity to clean up fashion’s act - with a need to ensure social accountability and implement sustainable legislation in particular, however at the same time, a large proportion of the world is facing economical turbulence and unaffordable costs of living. The financial status of many people means that their only consumption mindset right now is not ‘more sustainable’ but rather, that of survival.

To buy sustainably, at present, means spending more. If someone has been paid fairly to make something and if the materials are lower-impact, then there is a higher price to pay for this. The reality is, not everyone has the luxury to afford the ‘better made’ option. This is why systemic change and legislation is so crucial to transforming the industry for the better. Setting higher standards at a brand level, so that all clothes are produced using better materials, with ethical production and fair worker rights would be the first step into democratising sustainable fashion.

And the financial luxury of sustainable shopping, well that’s just one part of the privilege.

As I was writing this piece, a few other themes also came up that I wanted to shed some light on.

Education & Time

Somewhat linked to the financial privilege, is the privilege of having the education to know what ‘better’ looks like. When it comes to what materials a garment is made of, and how those materials can be recycled, it can be a minefield. My personal knowledge has come from hours dedicated to reading articles, watching documentaries and deep-diving into eco-educators and their TikToks. Not everyone has the time, or access, to do this.

Another barrier is the time it takes to seek out a more sustainable option. Almost every local high street in the UK is lined with a Primark, but the stores selling more sustainable options are harder to come by, making it a less convenient and more time consuming retail experience. Aja Barber once said:

“One issue with buying sustainably is that there’s a lot of research that goes into figuring out which brands are doing things right and which are not, and that takes considerable time — time that unfortunately not everyone can afford.”

Sizing

When it comes to vintage and pre-owned shopping, whilst progress is being made, research shows that these industries are still size elitist, offering significantly bigger volumes and choice of smaller dress sizes over larger ones. Whilst this is getting better, there is certainly still an argument that it makes pre-owned shopping harder for those that seek bigger dress sizes.

Upbringing

This point related to pre-owned and vintage clothing was made on a podcast I recently listened to, and really struck a cord. Aside from the odd hand-me-down from my sister, I’ve been fortunate enough to always have new shoes, clothes and toys as I grew up. That isn’t the case for everyone, and I appreciate that for people who have spent a portion of their life being forced to wear pre-owned, hand-me-down options, that they WANT to buy new things as a symbol of the phase of life that they’ve got themselves to.

To set out on creating a more sustainable wardrobe, in the way that I am doing this year, is a privilege. I’m seeking out better brands, buying less, and ensuring the quality is high. I’ve opted to only buy 5 new things this year - a statement that in itself, highlights my privilege. How lucky I am to have everything I need already.

I hope this piece encourages you to acknowledge that not everyone’s sustainability efforts can be measured by their purchasing habits, as it simply is not a level playing field.

I’m ultra aware of how influenced many of us are. Every social media platform, or media outlet, is somehow telling me a) what I should love and b) the quickest way for me to buy it.

This year, in tandem with my goal to enjoy fashion in a more responsible way, I’m also working to further refine and establish what my own personal taste is. My belief is that, through having clarity on this, I’ll be less ‘influenced’ by others, and will be able to pick out the one thing I really love, over the hundreds of things I’m told to love. I want to relearn to appreciate things, without feeling the need to buy them.

On a walk this week, I was thinking about some recent finds that I really liked. I don’t need them, I’m not going to buy them, but I really appreciate them. This inspired the idea of Pretty, not purchased.

1. Aligne waistcoat

   

   With a gorgeous butter yellow colour and flattering fit, this top is great. I love the high neck and can see it working with a load of trousers and shorts that I already own. Living in England, I’d realistically only get a handful of chances to wear it this Summer, and whilst it’s style is very ‘on-trend’ now, I really don’t think I’d be wearing this in 5 years time. But as of this week, I think it’s really cool.

2. Cult Furniture 2 piece marble coffee table

   

   I’ve had my current coffee table for 12 years. During my time working at the Urban Outfitters EU press office, I used to go crazy at the homeware sample sales, and managed to pick up my little, 60cmx60cm coffee table completely free. It was actually designed to be a side table, and I’ve been pining after something bigger and more ‘statement’ for a while. I’m lucky enough to have a Victorian ground floor flat with original wood flooring, and I think a light marble table could make for a really nice contrast to the flooring. I love this table duo from Cult Furniture, but 1) I really don’t need them right now. I have a coffee table 2) I should put the money towards more urgent things and 3) I’m potentially moving in the next 12-18 months, and so think I’ll save my money for a coffee table that works with my new, future space.

3. Gucci denim loafers

   

   I love denim for the Spring / Summer season, and these caught my eye straight away. I think loafers are both timeless and really aligned with my personal style, and I love the summer feel of this backless pair. I’ve had the full-shoe Gucci loafer in cream leather for 5 years and have worn, and continue to wear them, a huge amount. That being said, I think the denim variant of this style, whilst I love them right now, is probably not so timeless, and possibly more difficult to style with blue jeans, which make up a large proportion of my spring/summer wardrobe.

4. Anna and Nina plate

   

   I love fun plates. My glassware is always ultra classic, but my plates are the party. I love the idea of collecting plates full of personality, and ending up with a collection that represents various chapters of my life. This plate feels like summer to me, and is a nod to the Greek summers that are so close to my heart (my husband is half Cypriot and we visit Cyprus every Summer, without fail.) Whilst I’m not going to buy this myself, I think I will put it on my birthday list instead.

5. Vintage suede jacket via Vestiare Collective

   

   Spending your summer in England means you need to have a good selection of ‘summer jackets’. I hate wearing black blazers / jackets in the Spring / Summer months, and think a brown suede piece would be an epic addition to my wardrobe. I saw this vintage beauty on Vestiare Collective this week and immediately favourited it. I love the colour, collar, pockets and tassel details. I’m not going to buy it, but I love it!

A repetitive finish, but I think it’s a good message to stress…

Let’s normalise the appreciation of lovely things, but not feel the pressure to own all of it. Many of us have way too much stuff. Seek out that one thing, over everything.

Signs of spring have been few and far between in London, but when the sun has been out, I’ve been making the most of no-coat weather.

Outfit 1: Running errands

I was going to excuse the amount these jeans are going to be repeated in my outfit snaps, but having wardrobe staples that you wear again, and again, and again, is the goal of a harder working, sustainable wardrobe. Paired with an old Zara bomber, black tee and my trusty adidas Sambas. The moment of this look is my vintage Chanel bag, that I purchased 3 years ago after reaching a personal mile stone with my business. It is a 2004 classic black flap in lambskin, and features the gold plated hardware that you can no longer buy from Chanel (yes, those prices increases are for…brass. Hideous) If you’re in the market for a vintage Chanel with gold-plated hardware, look out for anything pre-2008!

Outfit 2: To dinner & the cinema

Sunshine and warmer weather ever-so-slightly crept through this week, and in true British fashion, I refused to wear a coat (prematurely) and instead opted for my Uniqlo cashmere jumper thrown over an oversized white tee. Paired with suede cowboy boots that I bought in almost-new condition on Depop last year, and blue Topshop jeans that are 6 years+ old and still in great condition. My trick with preserving the quality of denim is to wash it as little as possible, and instead keep it fresh with fabric sprays like this. Finally, the suede bag is from Parisian brand Elleme, and is one of my 5 new purchases of 2024 (I’m going to do a dedicated post on the 2/5 items that I’ve bought so far, and why) I have this bag in white leather and a mini pink leather, and have worn them non-stop since I got them 5 years ago, so when I saw the larger suede style, I could not resist.

Outfit 3: Work meetings

I had a day full of editor meetings all around London, so wanted to be comfortable above anything else. I wore my adidas sambas with a new pair of Mango jeans (my second purchase in my 2024 rule of 5) that have an oversized fit that I’m looking forward to styling all year round. I paired them with a cream jumper I got for Christmas 3 years ago, and a structured Navy blazer that I got for my birthday last year. The loose jeans and trainers paired with the tailored jacket felt like the perfect balance of put-together and comfortable.

If your anything like me, there is a part of your brain that joyfully files outfit ideas. My IG saves, pinterest boards and iPhone screenshots are full of looks I want to recreate. In recent months however, I’ve realised that a lot of these saved looks don’t even remotely meet my wardrobe requirements for the coming week, let alone the coming months and years. Historically, if you had opened my phone you would have found screenshots of influencers attending fashion week shows, or people dressing for a day in the office (I work from home) in LA (I live in England). For years, I’ve shopped according to these delusional outfit dreams, and have ended up with items (clothes in particular) that I’ve not worn more than once or twice.

My life, and therefore my wardrobe needs, are nothing like the people I’ve been seeking inspiration from.
