Chumbec, Yucatán

I just came back from one of the most beautiful, the most powerful, and the most transformative experiences of my life. I was able to learn with indigenous Maya women how to give sobadas. I learned so much not only of how to “pull” organs back into place, but also how each organ holds parts of ourselves, parts of our spirit. There is so much for me to say about my time with these Maestras, but I think I will write about this on a separate newsletter.

I want to express my greatest gratitude towards Maestra Nana Rafita and Maestra Mary for sharing their ancestral wisdom and knowledge. I cannot express my deep appreciation enough for their time and love in this learning process. I felt so safe to take my time learning, asking questions, and even undergo a healing journey. I want to let you all know that I will be taking a break from offering limpias. I am grateful to be able to hold sacred limpia ceremonies for my community, for my friends, and loved ones. Walking this path is a lifelong journey, and I realize how important it is to slow down in order to take care of myself.

Our society always likes to attach some sort of guilt, shame, or negativity when we take breaks or moments of rest. This is because our society is run by capitalism: a system of production that requires 24/7 labor. In all of our cities, there’s always someone working at all hours of the day. Even at night, someone is bagging food, handling large cargo, and/or managing cash. In our society, to take a moment to rest is seen as lazy, or even a sign of failure.

But ever since beginning my healing and spiritual journey, I know that this system of production is in direct opposition to our natural law. Mother Earth does rest. She has winters. She has sleepy afternoons. Soft springs and rain. And so do we: humans need rest as much as food, as water, as breath. I refuse to work like a robot, to be on-call all the time, and to “push through”.

I want to be honest and say: I am not sure when I will begin offering limpias again. I might just need a month, or maybe two, or maybe more! I am going to allow my body to take as much rest as it needs without any rules or obligations. I will be sure to notify you all once I feel ready to step into this work once more!

Honoring Life

Death has been visiting me here and there. Many people become frightened when they see a dead bird or animal. I understand. It can be unnerving.

But I have found death to be a loving messenger.

In the past few weeks, I have found little bees dying. I see them struggling to keep going. I pick them up and offer them a safe place for their eternal rest. I lay their little bodies on my altar and their death provided these gifts:

1. Never forget what is truly important

Society is always trying to tell you how to use your time, who to devote yourself to, and how you should spend your life. But on our death beds, things become ever so clear. We realize what we truly desired in life. We remember why we were born. And I am grateful to have this lucidity without needing to die just yet. I honor the bees’ lives by remembering what is truly important to me.

2. Life is sacred, Life is fragile

We only get one body in this lifetime. I refuse to hurt it any longer. I refuse to deny its beauty and existence. I refuse to let anyone make me feel embarrassed of my body. And I want to give my body a beautiful experience of life. I want to protect it and only allow loving people in my life.

3. We are all born to die

When we are born, we begin the journey towards death. No one can escape this fate. Not the birds, not the bees, not the trees. We all die one day. And this makes us equal. This levels the playing field. We all come from the earth, and we will all return to her too. This is not a lonely path. This is a collective one. And one we can walk together.

Tonight, we will be under the Full Moon in Libra. For the full moons, I love to bring all my sacred tools outside and let them charge under the moonlight. This is also when I make moonwater: I place a glass jar with a clear quartz crystal and spring water. I then use the moonwater to bless herbs, eggs, and even to cleanse during limpias.

This full moon is here to remind you that you belong. You were born as part of a larger whole. And every single part is necessary, including you. May you never forget that this is your home. You are meant to be here. We need you. And we love you. 🌸

Your Original Instructions

All of us came into this world with desires, dreams, and missions to complete in this lifetime. The Western World tells us that these instructions should be connected to money, wealth, and power. So many of us were brainwashed into thinking that our biggest dreams had to do with what we are able to accumulate, what we are able to horde, and in what place we land at the finish line. But this is so narrow. These things don’t even encompass all that you were born for.

Y sabes que? Our original instructions are endless. As we age and change as people, we unlock more and more the reasons as to why we exist in this moment and time. 💫

Here are some questions to ponder on:

• why do you think you were born in this era of the world?

• what adventures do you think you are here to discover?

• what are you here to offer to the planet, to your community, friends, family and yourself?

• what are you here to receive? to take pleasure in?

Nuestra Medicina Cura

We are all human, and this means we are susceptible to great, deep, haunting, and powerful feelings. Some of you have heard my story before, of why I now offer limpias and incorporate this beautiful medicine into my life. I know many of you are new to my space and I want to share more of my heart so you can get to know me, too!

About 6 years ago now, I entered a deep exhaustion and depression. I was harming myself and looking for a way to escape this world. I was working as a school teacher full time, organizing for our communities, protesting every weekend, and part of a teacher labor union. At the time, I was working in San Francisco in the Mission, a latine barrio neighborhood. If you are a teacher yourself, you know that working with children and families places you at the forefront of poverty and trauma. I saw children, mothers, and fathers experience what I lived through: losing their homes, domestic violence, painful divorces, emotional upheaval, and economic hardship. Watching this happen to the families I was working with re-traumatized me. It brought up everything from my childhood. I devoted myself to making things better and fighting for a brighter future, but the weight of this capitalistic and colonial system is not meant for one person.

I became nihilistic. I lost hope in the world, and in myself. I hated the way the system reproduced trauma and suffering. I believed that even if I died helping, things wouldn’t change. So I saw no point. I truly believed I was a waste of life. I hated who I was. I felt unloved. I felt like a failure. I felt unworthy. And this world was hell. Entonces, para que seguir?

I tried leaving. I found myself in a psychiatric facility. And in that cold, dark room, I curled up in my small cot. I was desperately calling out for warmth. And She found me.

A spirit who I often call, Great Mother, found me. Great Mother is our original ancestor: Mother Earth. She warmed up my chest first. I felt my heart literally get warm. And the light flowed throughout the rest of my body.

Then, I saw visions. Visions of me swimming to the bottom of the ocean. There, I discovered a pearl. It was my light. And my newfound commitment to Life.

When I got out of the psychiatric facility, I found hope in this medicina. Pills, medications, therapy, and psychologists were keeping me breathing.

But la medicina brought me back to Life.

Working with my ancestors, connecting to Great Mother Earth, I found the will to keep living. I found my inner peace. And now it is my deepest and greatest desire to share this holy medicine. It is the answer to not only our personal healing, but also to our collective liberation. 🌹

My New Favorite Candy: Flores de Jamaica

I feel like such a genius y’all hahahah. I was drinking some hibiscus tea. And when I finished the tea, I was about to throw away the jamaica flowers. Something just inspired me to taste the flower on its own. I realized that the texture was pleasant and the taste was sour, similar to chamoy. So, I grabbed my tajín and sprinkled some. And bam! My new favorite candy and snack. This has no sugar, no lime, only the used hibiscus flowers and tajín. I shared this with the herb club and it was a huge hit! yummmmm hehehe. 😋

I pray that this email finds you ready to move on, ready to say goodbye, ready to start anew! Spring is on the horizon. We are nearly there. This is the time to clear out your stuff, the closet, and leftovers. In my home, we are going through all the paperwork lying around in the cabinets, I am donating so much of my clothes, and I am ready to make my life simple.

Simple and Clean

Too much clutter literally makes life more complex than it has to be. This is both a physical and spiritual thing. Take the time to finally let some of your burdens rest. Some things are just not gonna get figured out. Some things are just not gonna get finished. Throw away the list of to-do’s and start over!

Here is a house cleanse herbal solution that I have been using to clean my floors: a tea of eucalyptus and rosa de castilla. You can find these in local markets! Just take a tablespoon of each dried herb and simmer them in a pot. Strain out the herb particles and then use the tea to wipe down surfaces. It’s gonna make your house smell so good!! and ready for spring!

A prayer to the East for New Beginnings

Below you will see a prayer that I use whenever I invoke the spirit of the East. Our ancestors saw the sun rise every single day over the eastern sky. They knew that towards the East, they would find hope for a new day. I suggest using this prayer any time during the mornings, and even on the day of Spring Equinox, too! I pray this prayer brings you many blessings <3

I now turn to the East, 

I call on the energies of the Sunrise Sun, 

I first give gratitude to you for beginning a new day. 

I turn the page to receive emptiness - 

one that allows me to start over, 

and to choose new things, 

new thoughts, 

new perspectives,

And now I am here. It took me several years, but I can honestly say that I am hopeful. And I want to share what worked for me.

1. Allow your body to react to its fear of the dark

The violence, fear, rage, and grief at seeing all the horrendous things happening in this world can be so overwhelming, that you numb.

I numbed because I didn’t know how to express these painful emotions. I never really screamed, wailed, cried, or moved my body. I was stoic. Tried to be strong. And ultimately, lost sensation in my body - like literally. I was a rock.

To lose feeling is to prepare the body for death. We must move. We are meant to dance. To express. To Scream!!

2. Look for people, spaces, sacred sites, and natural wonders to hold you

You are not meant to express all these feelings alone. The pain of the world isn’t mean for just one person. We need to do this with others too.

This breaks the illusion of alienation.

Isolation is the biggest tactic that the ruling class uses against us. We cannot afford to separate ourselves. We need to identify safe people and places to do this work together.

3. Slow down and identify the Light that already exists around you

After expression, after connecting with others, we naturally feel uplifted even if it’s just 1%. This is just neurological. So take this opportunity to maximize this feeling.

This little relief gives space for our psyches to stop the noise, and it allows for our spirits to come forward and look upwards. To seek Life.

Observe how people care about you. How you care about them. Observe what is growing, what is being born, what has always been there. Breathe. You are Alive.

4. Nourish your Spirit - keep it alive and burning

Identify what makes you smile. Remember what you used to like when you were younger. Prioritize the things and people that inspire you. This is what keeps you Alive. They are part of the reason you came to this world. Your purpose includes delicious food, warm hugs, exploring new places, finding love, and belly laughs with friends.

Anchor yourself in your spirit’s will to Live.

I am not speaking about your thoughts or feelings. I am talking about your Nature, your Spiritual, Intrinsic, and Instinctual desire to Live. Because all Life desires to keep going. Just like the birds who migrate to make home wherever they go. Just like the weeds that break through concrete to feel the sun. Life always finds a way, because it wants to Live.

5. The world is a duality of forces: Decide how you want to be a part of it, how you want to participate

The world will continue to face extremes until it finds its balance and harmony once again. Until then, we are Alive and we are here to participate together in our shared responsibility to this earth’s wellbeing.

We are here to take part with the rest of the world in building harmony: with the trees, the humans, the lakes, the animals, the clouds, the mycelium. This journey is a collective one. You are part of a bigger whole: how do you want to participate? what would you like to offer?

Stay. Please stay. 🫶🏽❤️

Today, I come with a message from the spirit realm. I write this with my beating heart and tears on my cheeks. I truly pray that this is of use to you. More than anything, I pray that it helps you love your humanity even more than ever before.

Change Compels Us to Live: A Spiritual Message

Every single life form in this planet wants to live. You see it everywhere. The baby that cries and wails right out of the womb. The weed that breaks through concrete to secure sunlight. The whales that migrate through oceans and make home wherever they go. It is wired in our spirits to seek Life.

Have you noticed that even when the most horrendous or tragic event happens in your own personal life, or in the world, the birds still sing? Even when war devastates a land, families still welcome newborns? Though people are dying and a genocide is at their footsteps, Palestinians still write poems, still fight for another day?

“I have learned that a woman can be a fighter, a freedom fighter, a political activist, and that she can fall in love and be loved. She can be married, have children, be a mother. Revolution must mean life also; every aspect of life.” -Leila Khaled

When I was a full-time teacher, union representative, and political organizer in my twenties, I lost all hope for Life. I had chosen to work towards liberation, but in doing so, I lost myself. Though my intentions were to help and support my communities, I was blind to the good things of Life. I could only focus on the violence, on the tragedies, on the pain and suffering. I was angry all the time, all day. Depressed and numb at night. My days looked the same and felt dull. Every day I woke up, forced myself to go to work, saw more lives taken by the hands of the ruling class, protested weekends, kept organizing, didn’t see any improvement in the world, and fell asleep doomscrolling while hating my life and this world. Nihilism had taken control of my psyche and I wanted to escape.

When fighting for a better future, it is very easy to lose our dreams and hope. The colonial state is savage, immoral, and inhumane. The more you dream, the more darkness gets revealed to you. And it is way too easy for someone to grow hatred in their hearts for the world, and even towards themselves.

So today, I want to leave you with the words of Mother, Woman, and Palestinian Revolutionary, Leila Khaled. Please read it again: “I have learned that a woman can be a fighter, a freedom fighter, a political activist, and that she can fall in love and be loved. She can be married, have children, be a mother. Revolution must mean life also; every aspect of life.”

We need you Alive and Well to participate in the Great Change of this Time.

The Great Change of this Time refers to the revolution that we are actively witnessing and experiencing in this very moment. It is not just happening on the political theater. It is also happening at a very spiritual level: your will to Live. To Live Fully. And not just on your own, but with others too.

All spiritual change is meant to unlock a deeper sense for Life. Think back to the big changes that have occurred in your life. For the most part, many of these changes were initiations to a more free, to a more aligned, and to a more joyful life. A revolution is the portal we walk through as a Whole to allow more and more humans to live freely! For us to reclaim our human lives from the ruling class, from the system, from nihilism!!

I pray that you allow yourself to be human this year. That you allow yourself to be a part of the collective. That you allow yourself to fulfill your sacred responsibility to your people and to the Land. At the same time, I pray that through this collective movement, you also look around and enjoy the trees, enjoy a big belly laugh with your soulmates, you hug your family tight, and allow your spirit to be Free. Because that’s what it means to be human: to do it all. Ometeotl

The theme of the fundraiser is Ternura Radical (radical tenderness), a term coined by Lía García (La Sirena Novia). It is defined as the act of sustaining ourselves, and one another, with revolutionary love amidst violence.” -Inés

Grief Circle Template

Right now, we need to stay united, connected, and grounded in our collectivity. This means, we need to feel a part of something bigger. One of the most threatening tools that the system uses to seize control of its people is alienation. Feeling alone cannot be an option for us. We need to make the effort to stay alive and that requires solidarity, hugging, listening, witnessing, and being present with one another.

My Current Herb Ally: Manzanilla (Chamomile)

Manzanilla has been with me since childhood. I often would get constipated and experience empacho (a common physical and spiritual ailment in children). My nana would prepare me te de manzanilla, light candles, anoint me with olive oil and sacred prayers, and then perform a sobada on my belly. Her hands were soft, but the movements were strong. She recited her prayers all throughout the massage.

I often hold fear and stress in my belly. As an adult, I have learned to do what my nana did. I now do the same thing: make a chamomile tea and then lovingly, massage my belly. It makes me feel held and taken care of.

Below, you will find a video of the manzanilla flowers from my garden (this is from last year!). I am so excited for them to return this year. I already see them sprouting again!

I am so grateful for all of you being here. This past year was a blessing to my life in every single way. I crossed a huge threshold in my journey. It feels good to know that I am living my life the way I want to. It feels good to wake up every day and know that I chose this life, where I live, what I do, and who I spend it with. With much gratitude, I am excited to start this new year with so much hope and love in my heart!

2026 In’s and Out’s

Word of the Year: CAREFREE

As I was setting intentions and dreaming for the next year, I realized that I was done holding my breath to anticipate. Anticipating someone’s reactions, anticipating accidents and errors, anticipating the possible setbacks.

I used to think this anticipation was me being “responsible” and “safe”. But when I look at the data, I realize that anticipation has never really helped me. Tightening my belly and holding my breath to brace for what was to come didn’t make anything easier, it didn’t avoid what I feared, and many times - it was an incorrect prediction. Many of the things I was fearfully expecting didn’t come true at all. Meaning, I was stressed for NO REASON. Everything turned out fine.

So this year, my main objective is to embody CAREFREE.

Not carefree as in irresponsible. Not carefree as in ignoring reality. Not carefree as in lazy or illogical.

Carefree as in devotion. Carefree as in trust. Carefree as in faith.

To embody the essence of “carefree” is to believe so deeply in your bones that everything will turn out just fine. That even if things turned a corner, you can face the mess and organize accordingly. That even if worst possible scenario occurs, there are miracles embedded.

2026: The Year of Analog

I started doing math and algebra in the mornings. I realized my brain is full of slop, worms, and its cogs were rusty. I couldn’t sit down and write. I couldn’t sit down and read. I was escaping boredom at every turn and reaching to check my iphone.

I am so done y’all!! I AM DONE BEING A MIND PUPPET TO ADS, TO CHAT GPT, TO MARK ZUCKERBURG, TO ENDLESS FYPs, TO A LITTLE SCREEN.

I bought a flip phone and decided to finally go all in. I chose to get off my iPhone and take a social media break. It was really discomforting for a while but somehow, I crossed a gateway. All of a sudden, my anxiety is only a little buzz. All of a sudden, I am caught up with my chores. All of a sudden, I go to pee right when I need to. All of a sudden, I am ready to go and out of the house exploring all the places that I had saved on my tiktok.

5th Annual New Year’s Limpia Events

This Sunday, January 4th from 1:00pm-6:00pm, I will be offering donation-based limpias at Mujeres Brew House! These limpias will operate on a first come, first served basis. There are limited spots available, so I will be issuing out “time slots” as people arrive and sign up. Death is here. It has come to open the gates of the dark winters of the year.

Our society as a whole does not honor Death. It is afraid of it. It tries to look the other way. It never slows down to realize that Death doesn’t take excuses, rainchecks, or tardies. Death comes when it comes. And we are at its mercy.

Death is here. It has taken away the lush greenery, it has wilted the wildflowers, it has activated widespread hibernation, and it has brought the cold winds to ease us into our cozy homes. This is the time to hold onto those we love most. This is the time for farewells and goodbyes. This is the time to dream.

Humans are not Nocturnal

Many of us did not grow up in a sleep supportive household. In my family, we did not have a stable routine. We went to sleep at many different times, and often after 11pm, even on school nights! I grew up always feeling tired, and I did not start taking my sleep seriously until I began to suffer with mental health conditions.

Sleep is so important. It affects our mood, our energy levels, our mental health, and overall wellbeing. Humans are diurnal beings and surprisingly, extremely sensitive to light. Our ancestors knew this: they called themselves children of the Sun. When our sleep aligns with the phases of the sun (dawn sun, morning sun, noon sun, dusk sun, night sun), our bodies’ circadian rhythms begin to stabilize and we feel ready to live life to the fullest! When you feel dull, uninspired, and just plain tired, I suggest taking a look at your sleep and see how you can align yourself more to the journey of the Sun.

Here are some tips to structuring healthy sleep habits:

Dreaming as Sacred Practice

During winter, our nights are much longer. This gives us the opportunity to engage with dreaming. Our ancestors saw dreaming as journeying into the spirit world. The winter calls us to rest our bodies so that our spirits can take their yearly astral travels.

Meditation and dreaming while we sleep is going to be a transformative practice during this time if you wish to engage. This is a time set aside from your busy days to do absolutely nothing.

In doing nothing, we are found.

Light a candle, burn some copal, drink an herbal tea like chamomile or passionflower, and allow your mind to take a moment of rest. Allow the spirits to come forward at the sound of your prayers. Allow the dreams to enlighten you.

Un Remedio

Elderberries are these small dark purple berries that are here to support your immune system. These berries are full of antioxidants, high in vitamin C, fiber, flavonols, and so much more. When you cook them with other spices and citrus, you can make a powerful syrup to help fight off the common colds! Here is an easy recipe for elderberry syrup that is both delicious and so empowering for our health! Private 1:1 Limpias Sessions

These are 1-2 hour sessions that include a full plática (a heart-to-heart talk) and tailored limpia rites. Sessions are held at the Healing Room in my private residence. Limpias are Mesoamerican cleansing rituals that serve to clear unwanted energies, to harmonize the body, and to inspire your spirit to live a life you love!! I quit my teaching job about four years ago, and it is amazing to see how my life looks so differently than how it did back then. It truly is such a privilege and an honor to be able to offer to the world my love, my creativity, my spirit, and my ancestors’ medicine. I am lucky to be alive and immensely grateful that I get to do what I love.

I decided to do things differently in November because I know that not all of you were able to make an appointment with me. For these reasons, I want to experiment with walk-in sessions. Autumn has begun and we are bidding our farewells to the summer heat! I am so grateful for the summer this year. I learned the importance of staying hydrated and swimming in fresh waters to keep myself peaceful during intense seasons.

Now, I am looking forward to the winds of fall. El aire is the element that brings messages, songs, realizations, and inspirations to our spirits. Without the wind, we would have no life. It is what fills our lungs and what directly communicates with our nervous system. When we breathe, whether deeply, slowly, quickly, shallow-ly, our nervous system recognizes the patterns of our breath and alerts the rest of the body how to behave. This fall, I hope we can learn to work with our breath in a way that empowers us and allows us to find inner safety. 🫶🏽

Schedule a Limpia

Although this month I have been taking a break to take care of myself, I personally feel more safe and grounded when I engage in community care. I feel called to open my home and invite you all to come together to stand in solidarity with our gente being targeted by this administration. This is an event open for all backgrounds and cultures who are in solidarity with undocumented peoples and those being racially profiled by ICE.

Velación and Letter Writing: Thursday, August 21st at 6:30pm

I want to invite you to come to my home for a community velación and letter writing gathering! I believe in the power of spiritual prayer and protection, especially when it is done in community. This event has two aspects:

1. To write a letter to our comrade Xochitl who is a DACA recipient that was abducted by ICE at an airport without any warrant or justifiable cause, and

2. To set up a velación of protection and liberation for Xochitl, as well as our own families and loved ones here in San Diego

Materials Needed

This is a free event! There is no cost to attend, however, there are some materials everyone will need to bring:

• 1 white pillar candle (found at common dollar stores)

• flowers (pink and white preferred)

• food to share

• optional: photos of your own loved ones that you want to protect from ICE

I will have all materials needed to write the letters, including mailing stamps, envelopes, pencils, and paper. All of the materials I will have are approved by the organizing committee advocating for Xochitl. Due to prison guidelines, all letters sent to Xochitl need to be made with pencil, standard size paper, and standard size envelopes.

Free Xochitl: Protect our Community

Catalina “Xóchitl” Santiago, a beloved community member, DACA recipient and long-time community organizer, was abducted by Border Patrol on Sunday August 3, 2025 at an airport in El Paso, TX. She was confronted by two Border Patrol agents as she was about to board a domestic flight for work. Despite presenting a valid DACA work authorization card (offering proof of her protection from deportation), Border Patrol abducted and detained her without warrant or cause. She has now been transferred to a processing center in El Paso.

Right now, Xochitl is in the hands of the state. We cannot allow her spirit to feel lonely, isolated, and disempowered. I believe that us coming together to pray for her and send her letters of encouragement will allow her to feel at least a little more cared for. She needs to be brought home!

Self-Discovery as Spiritual Practice

Summer tends to bring me back to my individuality. It asks me the big question:

Who am I when no one is watching?

The work that I do often positions me to think about others outside of myself. I am often considering others needs and their lives. So, I find it necessary to carve out space to allow myself to be selfish. And in these times of selfish solitude, I realize the masks can come off. I can be myself, without anyone waiting on me, without anyone calling me, without anyone watching me.

Humans wear masks all the time. Behind all the occupations and roles we play, there is a vast goo of authenticity waiting to be discovered and formed. This summer break is going to be fully devoted to going on a journey within - a descension. ➰

Grief Studies Zine (proceeds go to Gaza, Palestine)

Grief Studies Zine is a 126-page compendium moving through six stages of mourning and decolonization. It compiles the writing, poetry, and art of over two-dozen global artists and writers. I have found this zine to be so poetic, so timely, and medicinal to my heart as we are all grieving the violence, genocide, and anguish around the world. I love that the proceeds and donations made to bringing this zine to life is also going to families and mutual aid efforts in Gaza, Palestine. Highly recommend signing up for their pre-order! The digital zine is $2.50 and the physical hard copy is $18.50.

I became aware of this zine through Mei (they/them), a queer, Bengali, neurodivergent & disabled visionary writing from New Delhi. Mei is actually included in this zine! Mei has a way of writing genuine, magical, poetic, and deeply moving words. They focus on the matters of the heart and are very passionate about bringing about a better future for all peoples. I have found so much beauty, heartbreak, and wisdom in sitting with their work. I highly recommend checking out their work on substack, instagram, and patreon!

Becoming a Curandera starts with Healing Yourself

Many of you have been reaching out to learn more and more about Curanderismo and our ancestral practices from Mesoamerica. I am so happy that you all are feeling inspired to learn more! At this time, I am still a very young student in my path and so, I am not ready to be a teacher. However, I do want to let you know that one of the most impactful mentors you can ever work with is your own body.

Your path to healing is your first-hand curriculum to becoming a healer for your community. In fact, your body is going be your life-long teacher. I really enjoyed listening to this video below with Eliseo Torres and Tonita Gonzalez, who are respected elders and teachers in New Mexico on Curanderismo. Listening to Curandera Tonita’s story always reminds me why I have begun to walk this path in the first place.

Cindy Saylor’s Bookclub on “Serviceberry” by Robin Wall Kimmerer

Cindy Saylor is an Herbalist in San Diego with whom I have been taking courses to learn more about herbs and medicine making. I highly suggest taking her courses. Her teaching style is so fun, insightful, and deeply rooted in the land. I also love that she teaches in-person in San Diego! And, she has just announced an online offering starting August 12! Cindy will be holding a free bookclub on the Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer. This book is phenomenal. It is a short read but can be dense which makes it perfect for discussion and analysis. As much as summer can be full of light hearted fun and parties, some of us may actually feel so drained and overwhelmed by the sheer heat and loudness of it all. Some of us, in the midst of so much going on, may feel lonely and disconnected. I want to assure you that you are not the only one feeling down.

Summer began with the astrological season of Cancer, which is actually a very introspective, emotional, and deeply healing wave of energy. With that said, I want to redirect you away from any thought or belief that feeling sad or slower than usual is a failure. You are not wasting your summer. In fact, you may be more aligned to the summer season than you think. Take the summer blues as an invitation to release, heal, and mend any loose ends as the season continues to unfold and to gain more momentum. The rest of this newsletter will provide you recipes, tips, and healing advice to treat the summer blues. 🫶🏽

Peppermint Tea

Peppermint, or Yerba Buena in most Latine households, has been such a healing tea during this time of the year. It is soft, brightening, and refreshing. Often the “down” feelings we come across during the day may actually be fatigue caused by dehydration. Water is essential during such an extreme season like summer, and peppermint tea helps me keep my nerves grounded, relaxed, and hydrated.

Since it’s been a hot climate, I have been enjoying drinking my peppermint tea cold. I like to prepare a large batch (1 liter mason jar) in the mornings to drink later in the day once it cools. I use a six ounce small jar to drink and it just feels like the perfect amount to drink at a time. 🌿

To prepare 1 liter of peppermint tea I use:

• 4-5 tablespoons of looseleaf peppermint

• 1 liter of hot water

• let it steep for about 30 min to 1 hour

Napping under a Tree

Sleep is so essential. So often we push ourselves to stay awake during the summer. And year round, in the name of productivity, we neglect our bodies’ cries for sleep in order to avoid being called “lazy” or falling behind.

Disobey the world’s demands to keep running the treadmill of work and money!

Let yourself rest! (highly recommend reading Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey)

Find a tree you enjoy. One that gives beautiful shade. One that sings to you with her leaves and branches. One that has nice, smooth grass surrounding her. Ask her to hold you and to heal your energy, your body, your mind.

I like to offer my trees moon water as a gift exchange. I pour a bit on the trunk and on its roots. I place my hand on the tree and pray: “Arbolito, gracias por tu sombra. Gracias por tu belleza. Gracias por tu sanación. Gracias por tu sabidurÍa. Con tu permiso, ¿podría tomar siesta bajo tus hojas?” 🌳

Watching the Sunrise

This one requires more effort. But trust me, it is potent! The Dawn Sun is very giving. It rewards all who choose to meet it. The Dawn Sun wants to meet you. It wants to share with you its magic. Listen to its call. Make the effort to wake up to watch it rise above the hills. Listen to the birds sing their praises. Listen to the wind blow its messages. Listen listen listen. Close your eyes and lift your arms to receive.

The Dawn Sun provides inspiration to move forward. The Dawn Sun teaches us to be full of lust for life. It reminds us why we are. It helps us see once again the beauty of this world. It reignites Wonder. That child-like desire to discover, learn, and LIVE.

You came here to be YOU. And the Dawn Sun will provide you energy to fulfill your ultimate destiny! 🌅

I truly believe that humans were given a voice not just to speak, but also to SING! Make yourself a karaoke playlist! Fill it with songs you know the words to. It doesn’t matter if they are old or new. What matters is that you can sing along. Lifting up our voices uplifts the spirit to expression, joy, and silliness! Let go of the need to be a “singer”. It doesn’t matter if you are off key. What matters is that your voice is unleashed!

We spend so much of our day nonverbal in our society. We barely talk. Some of us don’t talk at all if you work from home or are living alone. You were born with a voice and it beckons to be used at full capacity! Sing to your heart’s content!

Bonus tip: learn songs and write out their lyrics! Get a journal devoted to just writing down lyrics to your most liked songs. Take the time to learn the words to your favorite songs. Not only will you finally be able to sing along, you will also understand the poetry and meaning behind your most beloved songs. (I love this practice because I get to document throughout the years my most liked songs and artists! It is so fun to look back on it as time passes!) 🎶🎤

Limpia de Limón

According to my teacher, Curandera Erika Buenaflor, limpias with limónes can treat emotions surrounding sadness, depression, and hopelessness. Citrus has the energetic capacity to uplift and cleanse the spirit.

First take a cup of moon water and place the lemon inside this cup. Let it sit for a day to charge and activate. After charging the lemon, take the lemon into your heart space and make a prayer to your chosen Spirits. Ask them to use the lemon to cleanse your summer blues and to balance your spirit. Then, take the lemon and sweep throughout your body from top to bottom. Once swept through the body, blow onto the lemon three times. Next, leave the lemon on your bedside table or under your bed for it to continue to absorb unwanted energies for at least 3 days. Lastly, take the lemon and bury it into the earth at least 1 mile away from your home. Give gratitude and thanks for allowing the earth to recycle and reuse the energy.

Within those three days when the lemon is sitting near your bed, make note of the energies that come up for you. Have faith that these energies are coming into your awareness in order for you to acknowledge their departure. Make peace with these energies. Listen to their lessons and wisdom, and then gracefully let go. 🍋

Reconnect to your Inner Teen

Call in that rambunctious, curious, horny, passionate, and wild teen self! They are the perfect guide to navigate the summer season! They will remind you of freedom. The freedom to buy a bus ticket and go anywhere and wherever you’d like. That gratitude of just spending your time without anyone telling you what to do. The teen self is most happy when it gets to exercise its will without judgement or caution. Remember how much you wanted to live life on your own terms? Well now you can! You are an adult! You are in charge! Fuck it! Just do it! Kiss that person! Go on that trip! Wear that bathing suit! Buy that concert ticket! Say YES! 💥

I don’t see holding limpias as a job. It is a passion. A calling. And the way that I like to participate in creating a more beautiful and harmonious world. For these reasons, I am very protective of the work that I do. I never want to burn out. I never want limpias to become an obligation for me. I do what I do because I enjoy it. I take time out of my day to hold people in sacred space because it is genuinely fulfilling for me. It gives me purpose.

At this point in my spiritual awakening journey, I was devoted to creating a relationship with my ancestors. I didn’t have much to go on about my family’s lineage. No pictures. No stories. But I did have names. I wrote and drew a family tree with all the names I could find. I placed this paper on my altar and had faith this would be enough to invoke my ancestry.

Out of all the names on that piece of paper, one of them came forward to become my mentor and guide: Nana Juliana. Nana Juliana was my grandmother’s grandmother. I often spoke to her through the use of the tarot, the pendulum, and deep trance meditation. Nana Juliana often shape-shifted. She would come to me as a human and sometimes as an all encompassing Great Spiritual Matriarch. She would escort me around the spiritual realm, acting as my teacher and protector. She brought me one day to a rancho similar to the one I grew up visiting with my family in Rosarito. And behind the main house at this astral ranchito, there was a garden full of maíz, frijoles, and herbs.

She led me through the garden. She pointed to a strong tall patch of maíz. She had a woven basket and taught me how to harvest and collect. As I held the maíz in my hands, I felt a familiar presence: my late Tata Josue. He died a little more than 10 years ago. His death was painful and to this day, we still mourn the loss of our beloved patriarch. I felt his strength in the maíz. His tenacity. His reverent power. His no nonsense approach to life. I even felt his height (he was a tall man) standing in front of me as I meditated at my altar. And I heard his message loud and clear: “work hard, build, and share, no matter what it takes”.

I began to harvest more plants in the garden and in doing so, I heard each of my relatives’ messages. Each plant held the essence of the ancestor who planted it. The plants held lessons they had learned in their lives. The wisdom they acquired as they walked their individual paths. What they had planted for all of us and what they left for us to harvest. The seeds of pain, success, and love had all grown into wisdom and shared knowledge for our family. I then understood that this garden was the place where my family collected and preserved ancestral wisdom, gifts, medicines, and inheritances.

Finding your own path

As I spent time in the ancestral garden, I began to notice that I felt responsible to continue growing what had been planted by those before me. I felt the duty to continue what others had started. Even if I did not agree with the messages, I kept eating from and growing the plants my relatives had left behind.

My Great Matriarch turned to me and told me, “You do not have to keep eating and growing the same harvests. There is plenty of room in the garden. You can choose to plant something entirely different.”

At this moment in my waking life, I was exhausted and burnt out at my current job. I had worked hard for the job I held. I had gone to 6 years of school. I had worked myself hard to the bone and was succeeding even. But my spirit was empty. All it had known was to “work hard”. It dreamt of quitting and finding something new. I wanted to live a life that was not as harsh. I wanted more. More light, more creativity, more passion, more love, more freedom.

My Great Matriarch’s words lit something in me. I hadn’t considered that I could ever live my life differently. I never even thought that was an option.

¿Que sembrarás?

All of us have a patch of dirt, of space, in the ancestral gardens of our families. Whatever you choose to plant there, whether it be rare herbs, hearty vegetables, or even nothing at all, it will be felt by all in your lineage. What we choose to plant will be available to harvest by ancestors who have already passed, relatives who are alive with you, and even the descendants thereafter. It is an honor to share with your family the wisdom you have gained in your life. Just as much as it is an honor for your family to receive your medicine. Everyone benefits from the gardens.

Now this question stands: what will you plant?

Be Free and Do What You Love

I planted these beautiful spray roses. Wild. Thick thorns and velvety sparkly petals. Vibrant. Passionate. Loving. And different from the rest. May not really serve to feed a family like maíz. May not really serve to build any furniture like trees. But I brought in beauty and color. I rebelled against the patterns of my family. I chose to steer in a totally different direction. I quit my job with no plans and took a leap of faith. I decided to leave the Christian church. I entered an interracial marriage. I now dress differently. I disobey and speak up. I confront instead of hiding. I don’t let things be brushed under the rug. And I honor my spirit. I honor my taste to disrupt. I honor my uniqueness and my passions. I honor my creative endeavors. The loving rebel spirit.

It is finally Summer! I am so excited for this season! Summer is associated with the South direction in what I have been taught in my Curanderismo studies. The South direction is a portal to self-discovery, deep understanding, and connection to the Water element. This is the time to be outside!!! To be in communion with our earth! 🌱

Los Que Madrugan, Dios les Ayuda

Summer is a time of great intensity. It is one of the extreme seasons of the year (along with Winter). During summer, the world gets louder, hotter, and more action packed! We socialize more, we sing more, we dance more, we go outside, we laugh, yell, run! Summer is just all around a very loud and stimulating season. For these reasons, I believe it is going to be important to prioritize setting aside time for stillness.

Dawn is a magical time. Waking up, putting on a sweater, bringing your blankie and standing outside to watch the sun rise is gonna be a vibe. Seeing the warmth of your breath against the fresh air of the early morning.

In my experience, dawn is so powerful because you are awake while everyone else is sleeping. God becomes easier to talk to. The birds bring you special messages for being one of the only humans awake. And the cosmos rewards you for your dedication.

I will be committing to waking up early for the sunrise (5:40ish AM) this summer. I feel that this godly communion will bring me the medicine I need. 🌄

Candle Magic: Setting Intentions for Summer

It is not too late to honor the beginning of Summer! This is a great time to sit down and establish intentions for this beautiful season. One way I enjoy placing intentions is through velaciónes or candle magic.

Here is an incomplete list of materials you can use to create a candle petition:

• parchment paper and pencil

• candle: white, yellow, red, or orange

• a bowl or plate to place candle

• wooden matches

• plantitas: marigold, sunflower, rosemary, calendula, daisies, chamomile

• crystals: sunstone, girasol quartz, clear quartz, citrine, carnelian

• salt

• offerings: spring water and an egg*

*According to my teacher, Curandera Erika Buenaflor, when we engage in velaciónes, we also need to place offerings: clean spring water and an egg.

Have fun and create a beautiful presentation of your velación. Before lighting the candle, take some time to write your petition. Those who ask, receive!

When you are done writing your petition, place it under the candle bowl and say a prayer. Invoke your spiritual support: ancestors, great mother, god, etc. When you feel the energy of the room shift, light the candle.

After the candle is finished, place the petition on your altar or under your pillow. The rest of your materials can be returned to the earth. 🕯️

Summer Ally: Calendula Flower Essence ($10, pick up in San Diego)

Flower Essences are gentle medicines that help us connect to the magic that flowers bring to this world. When you look at a calendula flower, you begin to smile, your inner body warms up, and you may even start to laugh!

The flowers I worked with to create these flower essences were grown from seed in my garden. I watched them go from little sprouts to finally blooming bright for the summer! In my neighborhood, I constantly receive compliments on my calendula flowers and I have noticed people walking by my home and smiling at the orange and yellow blooms. How to Use:

First, say a prayer to the spirits that protect you to come forward for this cleansing practice. Use the seed rattle to shake off energies that are no longer needed. Breathe deeply as you shake it all off.

Then, place some florida water into your hands. Rub the liquid all over your hands and smell them. Take deep long breaths. Imagine the aroma entering your body and cleansing you from the inside out. Limpia Teachings with Curandero Laurencio

I introduced you to Curandero Laurencio a few weeks ago. Since then, I found this pre-recorded lecture and class that is packed with so much good information and wisdom directly from Curandero Laurencio! He gives thorough explanations and even shows you how to perform a limpia on a person. I think it is always good to take notes and learn from various teachers on how to perform limpias and spiritual cleansings. 🥚

When you book an Online Session, we will also set up a pre-call before the limpia appointment. In this pre-call, we will establish an intention for your limpia and also discuss the materials that you will need to gather for the ceremony. Online sessions begin with an opening prayer followed by a plática, which is a heart straightening talk. After the plática, I will then guide you through a self-limpia along with my medicine songs and prayers. Although online sessions are not in-person, people have told me they feel cleansed, inspired, and empowered after receiving the online limpias! 🫶🏽

With the ongoing attack on our immigrant communities, many of us who come from Latin America are beginning to open our hearts towards ancestral reconnection. Despite the violence against our communities, it is inspiring and beautiful to see that many of us are answering our ancestors’ call! 🤲🏽

Today, I want to offer my own personal opinions and values regarding this path:

It is vital for many of us to remember where we come from. To return to our culturas is a form of active resistance to the violence of assimilation and forced forgetting.

Governments and colonial mindsets will present you with requirements and checkboxes to claim indigeneity. These are all rules made by colonial systems with the intention to steal land and enact genocide.

In my opinion, reconnection is a process that does not have written mandates, guidelines, or regulations. There is no actual handbook you can pick up and follow for your reconnection journey.

Therefore, it is going to require a strong sense of humility and self-confidence to find an ethnic identity that resonates with you and that, simultaneously, does not perpetuate colonization’s legacy of indigenous erasure. This looks like engaging in constant self-reflection to ground your genuine intentions towards reconnection and your ability to learn from mistakes (whether intentional or not).

I cannot tell you how to reconnect. I really cannot. But I will share with you my process. It is not perfect. You may approve of it, you also may not. I’m simply following what feels right to me. And I also trust I will learn and always grow throughout my journey.

My Journey

Currently, I resonate with identifying myself as a detribalized indigenous woman. This means I have indigenous DNA running through my veins, but I am not affiliated nor claimed by an indigenous tribe.

My reconnection process began when I started to meditate and pray to my ancestors. Although I was born in the USA, I grew up going to a ranchito near Rosarito in México with my family. It was a family owned land. Desert terrain with large rocks and tall trees. I still go there often in my spiritual astral travels and commune with my ancestors’ spirits. In my prayers, I see deer. I see medicinal gardens and maíz and frijoles. I see fire gatherings. These visions are not romanticizations. They are inspired by real-life childhood experiences at my family’s rancho.

One ancestor that is especially important to me is a matriarchal spirit. She morphs and changes from being an ancestor to becoming Pachamama herself. I began to call her Great Mother. She taught me how to heal myself. And she urged me to enter the world of Curanderismo, a traditional folk medicine practice that is common in Mesoamerica and Latin America.

So I did. And as I began to research through books, I also began to interview my family. I found out we carry Yaqui indigenous lineages.

But my family had turned away from their indigenous culture and adopted Christianity entirely. Becoming pastors and leaders, they saw their ancestral ways in opposition to their newfound salvation. My family still believes this way. There is, to this day, anti-indigenous sentiment in their words and attitudes towards themselves and others.

Now, I am left here, in the context of Settler America. In this moment, I do not feel it responsible to claim to be Yaqui. To survive, my family drank the colonizer’s kool-aid and closed those doors. I now face the consequences of forced forgetting and colonization.

Left with a shattered ethnic identity, I realize I could not accept completely forgetting my ancestral roots. Even if I cannot fully reconnect and claim to be Yaqui, I knew that the way of life taught here in the USA was going to eat me alive and continue to poison my descendants. I began to trust my intuition and for it to lead me towards practices that are open, welcoming, and available for me to adopt and to forge into my own affinity.

I found teachers and practices within Curanderismo that feel so true to me. I adopt these cultural practices as part of reconnecting and re-creating my ethnic identity after migration and assimilation. And I do this with patience, honor, and respect.

Advice and Considerations

Again, I cannot tell you how to reconnect. But I do want to advise that it is important to be careful of not getting discouraged. On your journey, there will be many points of challenge and self-questioning. If you are constantly questioning yourself, then that’s actually a great sign that you are humble and willing to learn. You will hear many opinions, both very loud and very quiet. Listen to all of them. Consider them all. And then, with great respect and carefulness, move forward in your journey.

You do not have to assimilate. You do not have to forget who you are and where you come from. Your ancestors want you to return. Not just for your benefit, but for the earth’s wellbeing. The culture and customs of our ancestors hold meaning and they forged a relationship with our planet and our ecosystem that fostered harmony and peace. There is a way to reconnect that respects and preserves both past and current indigenous communities while also allowing you to establish an ethnic identity that feels true to you.

Remember that who you are is actually so formless. The spirit that resides within is constantly changing, evolving, and re-creating itself. Be open to learning and failing. An ethnic identity is an ever growing aspect of the self because culture is also always morphing and transforming. Who you are is more than what any label could ever dictate.

Questions that I ask myself

• How does assimilation harm me?

• Why do I wish to reconnect to my ancestry?

• How can I do my part to heal myself, my family, my community, and the planet?

• Putting labels aside, what practices feel safe, welcoming, and open to me?

• How can I show my respect and appreciation for existing indigenous communities that continue to preserve and protect their culture and customs?
