One empty. One full. Thousands of people are watching both right now, switching between the two streams without anyone telling them to. What they’re doing has a name, but nobody’s given it to them yet.

On January 23, a bald eagle named Jackie laid an egg 145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine above Big Bear Lake, California. Three days later, a second. On January 31, ravens broke through both while Jackie and Shadow, her mate, were away from the nest.

The nonprofit running the camera wrote one sentence that stopped me cold:

“We will never know why, but we are sure they had their reasons”

Jackie and Shadow came back. They sat in the empty nest together for hours. The camera caught them vocalizing, turning toward each other, shifting weight. Two bodies in an empty nest, doing something that looked exactly like a conversation.

Roughly 2,000 miles northeast, at a steel plant along the Monongahela River in Pennsylvania, a pair named Irvin and Stella sit on eggs right now. Stella has fledged at least one eaglet every season since 2020. Six straight years, same nest, same river.

Nobody organized this double vigil. No one assigned the audience. And still, people are cycling between the two cameras, absence and waiting, as though they’d been invited to witness something they can’t quite name.

You mediate conflicts at work, you apply soothing creams to your skin, and you try to calm the low-grade panic you feel when you read the climate news.

You want the irritation to stop. You want peace, silence, and a world that stops burning.

But the irritation persists. It crawls up your spine when you sit still to meditate. It flares up in the comments section. It manifests as a drought in the garden you carefully tended.

You have been taught that the itch is a mistake, a glitch in the system that needs to be silenced or fixed. You treat the discomfort of the world as an enemy to be defeated.

By trying to numb the sensation, you are cutting the very line of communication that connects you to reality. The itch is not a problem to be solved. It is a phone ringing in an empty house, and it is time you finally picked it up.
