Gardens can have a hard time with the changes in weather, and so do we. They can cause lots of emotional and physical distress.

For quite some years now we have been experiencing climate changes, and out here in West Cork, in Ireland… which runs along the Gulf Stream… we can actually have quite the tropical weather… and the wild Atlantic gives its extras.

I have been told that the weather has been quite changeable since September 2025… with so much rain, wind, and lowish temperatures. Many plants and trees cannot make up their minds what season it is.

So our gardens can suffer quite easily from a mild dose of what already happened in 2009 and 2010 in Ireland… a rather unseasonable weather. Where we may see the inner storm raging...

And yet, the palm trees out here… especially those I remember in Cork City… those resilient, almost defiant symbols of warmer climes, stood frozen, their fronds heavy with snow. Some died off or went into hibernation, while others lost most of their leaves. The ones that clung on turned yellow and brown, longing for TLC, as if surrendering to the weight of it all.

It was as if the earth itself was saying, Even I must pause. Even I must adapt. And so must we.

The big freeze of those weeks back then was a reminder that nothing, not even the familiar rhythms of Ireland’s mild winters, is guaranteed. The gardens struggled, yes, but they also revealed their strength in unexpected ways.

Roots ran deeper. Branches, though burdened, held firm.

It is the same with us.

When the storms rage...whether in the sky, in the streets, or in ourselves … we, too, are forced to confront what we have built, what we have taken for granted. The anger, the protests, the frustration, people we disagree with: these are the winds howling through the cracks of old systems.

But when the rain clears, when the snow melts, and the tears are dried, we see with new eyes. We see the fragility, but also the possibility.

The structures we have relied on for centuries are shaking, and in that shaking, there is a chance to rebuild… not with violence, not with destruction, but with intention. With care. With presence.

The garden teaches us this: it doesn’t resist the storm… it endures it.

When the warmth returns, like the moment Kai’s heart melts in The Snow Queen… Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale… when he sees Gerda again and her warm, tender tears fall, the garden begins anew. Not as it was before, oh god no… but as it must be: transformed by the storm, yet resilient.

This cycle of loss and renewal is part of life. We cannot resist the changes before us… all we can do is ride the storm, even be the storm. But after the storm comes quiet. The anger, grief, and loss find their way out through my hands: in the garden, in writing, in art.

This, too, is the cycle.

Gardens are mystifying. And so are we.

Here I am, spreading out, planting seeds in the wild beauty of West Cork, offering my services as The Compassionate Gardener. But I know it is just as important to be seen not just for what I do, but for who I am… human, evolving, and yes, a little bit mystifying myself.

After four weeks in this corner of the world, I have learned a thing or two.

My boundaries are firm, my garden fences freshly oiled and painted for the summer. I cherish my privacy, but I also crave connection… with people who see me, not just what I can provide.

It is fascinating, isn’t it? How different we all are. How our inner gardens thrive under unique conditions to feel at home with ourselves, and thus with others.

My inner garden needs moments to just sit and be.

To watch the occasional comedy, read a book that has fallen into my lap, listen to uplifting music, be on a walk out in nature or move through my morning Qi Gong stretches or with Kundalini yoga… wherever my intuition guides me.

The older I get, the more I realize that burning the midnight oil is no longer an option.

My spirit may still feel young and adventurous, but my body, nearing fifty, gently reminds me of its limits. A rejuvenating sleep is non-negotiable; I must be in bed by 10 pm at the latest, or I can sense a headache creeping in.

I have created flexibility in my life, but I have also learned to listen… mindfully, caringly… to what my body needs.

My garden doesn’t require much space.

A wee plot where I can put down roots and cultivate joy as I watch what I have planted grow. And as I glance around my little pet kindergarten for the next ten days, I can’t help but smile… there they are, snoozing away in my presence, alive yet at peace.

There is a quiet magic in the simplicity of life out here, in nature, with animals.

The bus driver knows my stop before I even speak. The local shopkeepers pause for a chat, weaving a sense of community with every interaction. For some, the slow pace might feel frustrating, but for me, it is nothing but a gift.

Compared to the rush of city life, this is the rhythm I need… the rhythm I have chosen.

Even when the winds rage over the sea, and I hear the wind weaving through the sails of distant boats in the boatyard, I am anchored. I am home.

And who knows, perhaps that is the lesson we can all carry, no matter where we are: Resilience isn’t about enduring the storm; it is about knowing your roots are strong enough to hold you.

Connection isn’t about the number of people around you and me; it is about the quality of the moments we share.

And simplicity?

That is the art of stripping life back to what truly nourishes and makes us come alive.

Gardens are weird… so are we.

People can become stranger than fiction when we grow older, and given what is going on out there in the world, life can be fiercely strange.

It is as if the soil of our lives gets turned over… what was once familiar now feels foreign, and we are left staring at the roots, wondering how they ever held us up.

It isn’t easy to suddenly navigate a friendship – a life - that is no longer stable and reliable.

It feels all too strange.

And you don’t know what has happened, and you begin to overthink… what have I done? When all I have ever been is my truest self.

But here is the thing: authenticity isn’t always met with open arms. Sometimes, it is the very thing that unsettles the ground beneath us.

You finally speak up when it is necessary. Something felt off and hurtful, and needed addressing before things escalated. And that, right there, is the courage no one talks about… the quiet kind, the kind that trembles but still speaks.

I cannot deny that the past few years have been easy on me.

My mother’s passing, my own health issues, the surgery I had to undergo, leaving a long-term relationship only to have to start all over again at nearly 50. It is not fun.

And yet, here I am. Not broken, but bent… like a tree in the wind, learning to sway instead of snap.

But I cannot move backward into the known, into the familiarity that kept me small and stuck.

All I can do is move forward toward the unknown future… a completely white canvas for me to create. And what a terrifying, glorious thing a blank canvas is. No lines, no rules… just the whisper of possibility… heaven, a balm for the soul… and the echo of every old fear trying to pull you back.

And sure, it isn’t easy.

If it turns out too good to be true, our alarm bells should be ringing. Simply because what is there to learn when it is easy, hey? But then it feels like drama again. But growth was never meant to be neat, was it?

Growth is messy, loud, and sometimes so quiet you almost miss it.

And I am at the stage in my life where peace has become my priority… my inner peace. And peace, real peace, isn’t the absence of storm… it is learning to dance in the rain without drowning in it.

It astonishes me that I have to navigate this situation I am finding myself in… the in-between, being pushed forward and onward, away from the past where I still have one foot in, and another about to set foot into the Unknown.

This is the liminal space… the sacred pause between what was and what will be.

And West Cork, with its wild edges and quiet corners, feels like the perfect place to stumble into it. Some day, I may even say: Nothing new in the west!

Places and people who could become my tribe… in their own time.

This is what accountability looks like: naming the cages, stepping out of them, and refusing to let the past dictate the future. It is the work… and the gift to all of you… I have poured into Being Eclipsed... Women under Care of The Patriarchy. Explore the book here.

I cannot deny I am scared… but not of fear itself. Oh god, no!

The real enemy is the illusion that the old patterns we are all surrounded with and created over generations ever served me or you… or neither of us.

They never did.

They were just the cage we knew how to live in, a cage that let us cling to connections while avoiding the hard work of accountability.

Now is the time to step out.

Now is the time to move forward.

Gardens can be safe places… just like we can be, when we give ourselves the time and care we deserve.

Too often, we rush into situations, into people who seem different at first… only to find they are the same patterns wearing new faces. But there is also that familiarity that allows us to drop our guards... too fast... too soon.

And we wonder why we keep repeating history... why we feel unsafe, or why something, deep down, still feels off.

And that is when we need to pause and listen!

Awareness is not enough.

What is needed is the realization… the full integration and acceptance of past mistakes. And forgiving ourselves for what we couldn’t have known at the time, but know now.

I have been here before… many times, and it is not naivety or stupidity.

Neither me nor you are lost or tethered. We are finally beginning to accept our true self in the midst of all that goes on around you.

Sometimes we just need to go a few extra rounds to truly understand... to let the lesson sink deep enough that we no longer just recognize the pattern, but are finally ready to step away from it.

We are humans, not machines.

We make mistakes… or rather, we need those experiences to accept the person we never thought we could be, once we let go of a past that wasn’t meant for us.

The past is us... but I know I have long outgrown mine.

And still, when I sit in the in-between… that quiet space between what was and what could be… there can easily be a pull towards what I know, what feels familiar, but also towards what no longer serves me, what keeps me small.

How easy it is to walk those same garden paths again… too fast, too close, too familiar… and then wonder why nothing changes, why nothing lasts, and why it often feels so unnecessarily painful.

And yet, there may be a call from the unknown... from the future that may think it knows, or actually knows, that I have lots of gardening and growing experience under my belt.

Still, the signs are always there, right from the very beginning.

Closing a cycle, learning the lesson, creating a new boundary that allows us to feel free... to be.

Gardens need more than safety; they need sunlight, fresh air, the occasional rain, space to evolve, indeed… to simply be.

I don’t know how many times I thought I was going in circles when I lived in Cork City. I have lived on the north and south sides. I have worked as a teacher, in care, in gardening… and still managed to run into situations, people, all of it, that felt like lessons I should have long understood.

But looking back, I see I needed to experience it all from every angle to step away from it all once I finally felt ready, to create and cultivate a life that could finally collaborate with mine... and exist in harmony.

I know now that to feel truly at home… within and without… I need stability, respect, self-awareness, reciprocity, clear communication, humour, and simply a decent humanity reflected back to me.

To put it plainly… to be wanted somewhere not just functionally, but humanly.

Gardens can make you feel in-between.

You are neither the meticulously pruned, traditionally “perfect” garden, nor the wild, mañana-mañana chaos of untamed growth. You are not a squirrel on espresso or a kangaroo on a mission, tearing through life at a frantic pace, nor the turtle, taking your own sweet thyme at your own rhythm.

You are simply you… neither one nor the other, yet able to relate to both.

You are in-between.

And I must admit, I tend to take my sweet old time before I bloom… because I need that space to discern what feels right for me.

Looking back, I have now been back on the island of Ireland for almost six weeks. Yes, time flies when you are having fun living your life. But at the same time, I am glad and grateful that things have slowed down immensely.

And I must admit, I prefer it that way for the moment.

Not only do I tend to the outside garden that surrounds me, doing my bit of weeding and maintaining, but I am also tending to my own inner garden. I eat, sleep, rest, and pause. I go for nature walks, do my daily yoga and Qi Gong, write, and read, listen to music and watch a comedy… What else would I need?

I am content and fairly happy with this garden of mine, even if there are moments where the in-between is suddenly overcome by anxiety: Where will life take me after this?

And I breathe…

I breathe deeply and remind myself: Whatever will be, will be… Do not force anything!

Stay present, in the here and now!

Do your necessary stretches!

Because, in all fairness, heading toward my 50s next year, this garden of mine needs regular maintenance to remain focused and clear. Before my garden joints get all rusty and worn, I know we all need oiling, and so I regularly take care of my garden fences… and mind the pets… because even the wildest dreams and the quietest gardens need a little companionship along the way.

When I went for an evening hike the other night, I discovered one of those old cottages in a beautiful setting, abandoned quite a while ago.

Oh, my mind suddenly went spinning… While I feel so in-between… I neither rent nor own property… this cottage… that looked so lovely in that evening light, this dream I have had for a long time, where I hear Swing Jazz music drifting out of the house and see myself looking down the wee slope to my little garden… may never bloom into reality.

And that is completely okay.

Because you know what… right now, in this moment, I am exactly where I need to be… tending to my inner and outer gardens, letting life unfold at its own pace.

The cottage can wait. The dream can breathe. And so can I.

The Compassionate Gardener

As you move through this week, ☘️ may the sun shine warm upon your face, and the rains fall soft upon your fields.

Gardens are as different as we are.

Some are noisy, restless, and can’t sit still. Others crave the peace and quiet of a retirement home… though even there, I dare say, quiet isn’t always guaranteed.

Trust me, I have done work experience in one. The spirit usually awakens when there is food and music, and I have seen that in every garden of life.

Life suddenly turns into a dance.

After spending the past month in a rather unstructured, slightly disorganized garden… where letting go and weeding were necessary… I not only learned a lot about myself, but also sat with my grief for my late mother.

It came out in waves… especially when I least expected it.

Beside me sat a woman… a mother to her daughter, a grandmother to her granddaughter… and a young twenty-year-old, just at the beginning of her life’s journey. I felt for both of them, including the weight of their unresolved emotions, but I knew those burdens weren’t mine to carry.

I knew I needed to tend to my own garden plot.

That explains my vigorous need to go for hikes out in nature, to let the wind blow through me... to remember who I am and what I came here for.

Gardens need tender loving care.

Presence is essential for those who feel lost or off-kilter in the world, figuring things or, looking for clarity and honesty, helping them find their footing, especially emotionally. To feel welcome is to feel at home, from within and without.

Grief is part of life, and it isn’t always easy.

Not everyone is willing to sit with it, to let it be.

Every day is a new beginning, and with every evening, we say goodbye to what was, making space for what hasn’t yet arrived.

Letting go is hard, especially when it feels like only yesterday that I sat at a client’s kitchen table, and my mum called me for the last time. I still hear her voice, her excitement as if she was a teenager – all giddy! She wanted to tell me something important, but in person. But by then, she was already gone.

Now, I am in someone’s house and garden close to the Wild Atlantic, caring for the place and their pets while they are away for the weekend. Grief lingers here, too. Someone has recently passed on, and the pets sense it.

One of the dogs is always on alert, hoping her master will return any moment now. She doesn’t understand yet, but he will always be with her, no matter where she roams in the backyard.

I feel her sorrow, her loss.

These rescue pets… three dogs and three cats… have found their forever home, but they need someone’s presence, someone who can sit still and simply be.

So here I am, in this garden close to the sea, surrounded by life that is both restless and still. The dogs’ slow pace, the cats lounge out in the sun, and the wind carries whispers of what was and what will be.

Maybe that is the magic of a garden… it holds space for all of it: the noise, the quiet, the grief, and the joy. And perhaps, in tending to it, we tend to ourselves.
