I don’t make regretful walks because wherever I go, my best becomes an involuntary action. When you leave kindness and good intentions behind, there will be no space for regrets. Sensible humans don’t regret being good because the good they do or live will form a protective shield around them. Life will repay them for the good they shared with our world.

“I have lived here for three years, and every morning he walks by here wearing a three-piece suit, carrying a black briefcase. He is never late and stops at that house, looks at his watch, stays there for exactly five minutes, then walks away, swaying his head. Then he would return the same time every evening, checking his watch, stamping his feet twice, and leaving. This goes on from Monday to Friday?” Fiona asked her neighbor, who has been living in the area for more than thirty years.

“He stopped coming on the weekends?” Dina asked.

With wide eyes, Fiona responded, “You knew about this?”

“Most of the neighbors do,” Dina revealed, her hands in the air.

“He dresses differently on the weekends as if he plays golf,” Fiona informed.

“So, he still comes on weekends,” Dina said.

“Why?” Fiona asked.

“Oh, he does his regret walks daily,” she explained with ease.

“His regret what?” Fiona’s shock demanded.

“More than twenty years ago, he lived in the house across the street. He has a beautiful wife and two children whom he wasn’t very good to,” Dina Santos explained, pausing to push the pain away.

“She left him, and he keeps coming back?”

“No, she didn’t leave him. He made her life hell, and she committed suicide, leaving a note explaining how cruel he was to her. She begged her children to forgive her.”

“Oh God no!” Fiona cried out. “How old were the children?”

“7 and 8.”

“But they are babies!”

“They discovered her body, too,” Dina recalls the shock and pain the entire community was raging in.

“Oh no!” the pain in her heart said.

“The house belonged to her parents. They sold it and left with the children.”

“They are adults now. Does he see them?”

“They don’t wish to see him because of what he did to their mother.”

“Damn, but why come back to pain?”

“Love started here. They met here as children. According to the report, he was experiencing hell at work and took it out on her. He keeps coming back, hoping he can change something,” Dina elaborates.

“But he can’t,” Fiona’s pain expressed.

“He is over sixty, and the pain his brain is enduring isn’t aware of that. Many humans make their daily Regret Walk. Most aren’t aware that some situations can’t change. Many go back to what they want, thinking it will just come back to them,” Dina explained in reflection.

Fiona sighed heavily and deeply, pushing the pain back, then shared, “I am going to change how I live my life, because I can’t make regret walks when I am old.”

“Regrets are a part of our lives; not all of our decisions will be the right ones,” Dina reminded her.

“I know that,” she said sadly. “But wasn’t anyone thinking of the children?”

Dina sighed again, then asked, “Do you regret your mistakes?”

“Who doesn’t?”

“What if you learned vital life lessons from them and ended up making better decisions?” Dina asked.

“Then I have no reason to make my Regret Walks,” she answered with a smile.

“See,” Dina said, grinning too, “if we learn from our mistakes, there will be no place for Regrets.”

This piece was inspired by a young man who was friends with one of my neighbors. The friendship ended, and every day for the past six months, at the exact time they used to hang out and enjoy themselves, he was seen passing by, his eyes on his ex-friend’s yard.

Regrets are a part of our lives, but what if we can learn from our mistakes and not repeat them? Would we still have to make our Regret Walks?

This piece is real, but in a different way. The person making the regret walk stole from his friend. His friend removed him from his life and home. He took several walks throughout the day, staring at his friend’s house as happy memories took hold of his body, heart, mind, and soul. He wishes he had made better decisions.

All of us have been here. Some never left. I learned from my mistakes, paid the piper, forgave, and moved on.

Many of the humans I know are forgetting how to use their brains. Some cannot be bothered because a machine can do better than they can. That’s what we were made to believe. The machine is perfect. They do as told and ask no questions. They do that for one reason. They can’t think for themselves. They lack empathy, morals, and ethics. They don’t know the difference between right and wrong. They have no heart to love or understand life, living, humans, and our world. Yet we put our lives and future in the palm of their hands.

From the Industrial Revolution to artificial intelligence, technology has always reshaped human work. Now AI is transforming cognitive labor — are we adapting or outsourcing our minds? @

AI should be the helper, not the one issuing orders. My brain is my CPU. My decisions aren’t only for me but for my generation. It’s made with kindness, thoughtfulness, wisdom, common sense, empathy, and consideration, and anything else needed to add nothing cruel to the earth and would harm or hinder humans, plants, and animals.

Machines are nothing without us. It has no value if humans don’t utilize its powers and capabilities. We redefine its values. It didn’t redefine us.

AI isn’t doing anything to us that we don’t allow it to do. Humanity has a choice. Most just chose the easiest way out. When we do, we forget ourselves and our abilities. We forget who we are, our purpose, and responsibilities to life and our generation; thus, we learn nothing from life when we hand AI our future.

Humanity didn’t become obsolete — we adapted. We moved up the ladder. @

Yes, we moved up, at a cost to our lives and sanity. Our world is in chaos, and humans are no longer thinking with common sense. Insanity in the hearts, minds, souls, actions, choices, and decisions of our leaders is making decisions that the earth and its inhabitants will eventually pay for. We are already paying for climate change as the Earth is on fire now. Water shortage in many countries. Farmers are losing crops as excessive heat burns them as they grow.

Instead of replacing thinking entirely, AI is reshaping how we think and work: @Happy Writer

Yes, it’s rearranging our thinking. And from what I see in my country, dishonesty is at the top of the list. AI is assisting humans in scamming, cheating, and deceiving.

If we rely too heavily on AI for writing, coding, and decision-making, we risk weakening our own critical thinking skills. @Happy Writer

So this is why my country’s education system is returning to critical thinking in Primary Schools. I like this. My critical thinking was developed early in childhood. I did the same for my kids. Most humans can’t think critically now.

Why struggle to solve a problem when AI gives instant answers?
Why practice creativity when AI generates ideas in seconds? This convenience may lead to a decline in deep thinking, problem-solving, and originality — skills essential in the digital economy. @

Easy is the route more than 98% of humans will take, unaware that no life lessons await them. There are no life lessons that can teach them how to live longer and communicate with each other. No life lessons in solving life problems with common sense, wisdom, and understanding. No life lessons on how to survive because we allow our brains to become stagnant. Many decisions made today by leaders and educated professionals aren’t grounded in common sense.

These humans can’t think and use their brains to make life-altering decisions.

AI is already in control.

Shadow: Friend or Foe

by

“How did you know he was coming?” her husband asked.

She smiled, eyeing the body on the floor, “His shadow gave him away.”

“But it could have been me.”

“No, our shadows are like an external DNA

It identifies us in every way

It warns of intruders, using the night to play

Walking quietly like a cougar, stalking its prey

Not aware that it can take their life away

Her husband looked at the man lying on the floor and said, “You killed him.”

“No, he’ll live to continue living his life on a limb

Not aware that his shadow will tell when he is coming

Whether he is walking or running

“What are we going to do with him now? Her husband asked.

I will wait until he wakes up,

Then he will see that he ran out of luck

“I think we should call the police?” her husband suggested.

She looked at the men she hit with her cast-iron pot,

Checking his pulse to see if he is breathing or not

Nodding, she said, “Our Shadows can be a friend or foe

As it alerts others to let them know

Of our good or bad intentions

Identifying a priest or a henchman

Which one is he?” her husband asked

Knowing the truth was an easy task

“Did he have a weapon?” her husband pressed on.

Thinking a cast-iron pot wasn’t the best protection

Not aware of a woman’s intuition and innovation

Are weapons used in many home invasions

She pointed to the gun that fell after she hit him in the back of his head

Knowing that the blow wasn’t powerful enough to kill him

Her husband grabbed the phone, dialing nine-one-one

Minutes later, the siren screams grab their attention

“His shadow saved me tonight

I thank God it wasn’t daylight,” she said.

“Me too, dear wife of mine,

Friends don’t sneak up on you, day or night

But some shadows lurking in the dark are enemies, all right.

Dr. Gabriella Kőrösi is a creative soul. She is an ever-evolving author, writer, publisher, blogger, artist, public health professional, Registered nurse, and a Reiki Master. She has a master’s degree in nursing and a Doctorate Degree in Public Health Community Health. Gabriella was born in Hungary, and she moved to the United States over 30 years ago and currently lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Gabriella likes to garden and spend time with family and friends. She enjoys picking and eating what she can grow, and she loves trees and being out in nature. Gabriella’s interests are creating love and joy in people’s lives and reconnecting with nature and everything around us. She loves to write and interview people about their experiences in life.
