The shift happening right now

For most of the 20th century, space was a government project. NASA put humans on the Moon. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik. ESA coordinated European ambitions. The defining logic was national prestige and scientific exploration, funded by taxpayers and measured in decades.

That era evolved.

What people in the industry call the “New Space Era” started quietly in the early 2010s, when private companies began doing things that previously required nation-state budgets.

The shift was economic as much as technological.

When SpaceX landed a rocket booster for the first time in 2015, that landing was a signal that the cost structure of getting to orbit was about to change permanently.

Today the space economy operates across four distinct layers and understanding all four separates someone who follows space news from someone who actually understands it.

• Launch is the foundation. Getting things from the ground into orbit. Without reliable, affordable launch, nothing else follows.

• Satellites are the product layer. Communications, Earth observation, weather, navigation, intelligence. Almost everything the modern economy depends on flows through satellites.

• Exploration is the frontier layer. Moon missions, Mars programs, asteriod prospecting. Long timelines, high risk, enormous potential.

• The data economy is the layer most people overlook. The information generated by satellites, repackaged into products, sold to governments, insurers, farmers, logistics companies and financial analysts. This is where a significant portion of the long-term commercial value lives.

The seven forces reshaping space right now

1. Reusable rockets are the foundational shift. Before SpaceX industrialized rocket reuse, every launch meant building a new rocket from scratch. In 2025, SpaceX flew 157 out of 165 Falcon launches on flight-proven boosters, a 95% reuse rate according to their S-1 filing. The booster is the most expensive part of the system. Flying the same one dozens of times compresses the marginal cost per launch in a way that changes what becomes economically viable to put in orbit.

2. Mega-constellations followed directly from that cost compression. When launch gets cheaper, putting hundreds of satellites in orbit becomes viable where one used to be the limit. Starlink reached approximately 10.3 million subscribers as of March 2026, up roughly 105% from 5 million just a year earlier, according to the SpaceX S-1. Amazon’s Project Kuiper, branded as Amazon Leo, already has three Ariane 6 launches completed and 18 more contracted. AST SpaceMobile is building a constellation designed to connect unmodified smartphones directly from orbit, with nearly 60 mobile operator partners covering over 3 billion potential subscribers. These are deployment races with real capital behind them.

3. Moon missions have returned, this time with commercial contracts attached. NASA’s Artemis program actively contracts private companies to deliver infrastructure to the lunar surface. Astrolab received a $219 million task order to develop a crewed lunar rover for delivery in 2028, with partners including Axiom Space. Axiom itself closed over $525 million in financing to fund its commercial space station and lunar suit program. The Moon has commercial value attached to it now, not only scientific.

4. Mars robotics is earlier in its development but moving faster than most headlines suggest. Rocket Lab completed its acquisition of Motiv Space Systems, the team behind the robotic arm on NASA’s Perseverance rover, rebranding it as Rocket Lab Robotics. AstroForge completed its DeepSpace-2 spacecraft, a roughly 200-kilogram modular vehicle targeting a near-Earth asteroid rendezvous in Q4 2026. Private companies are building the capability to operate machines in deep space for the first time.

5. Commercial space stations are replacing the ISS model. Axiom Space is developing the first commercial station in low Earth orbit, designed to serve human spaceflight, microgravity research and orbital compute. Vast is developing Haven-1 and has already launched a high-power satellite bus product line built on station technology, securing its first customer with an option for up to 200 satellites. BioOrbit launched a pharmaceutical manufacturing payload to the ISS in May 2026, demonstrating that microgravity manufacturing of protein crystals impossible to produce reliably on Earth has moved from research into production.

6. Space tourism tends to attract outsized attention relative to its current financial significance, but Virgin Galactic confirmed plans for its first commercial spaceflight in Q4 2026, with glide testing underway in Q3. The visible tip that brings public attention and with it, capital flowing into the broader sector.

7. Space militarization gets the least public discussion but attracts some of the most active capital deployment. True Anomaly raised $650 million at a $2.2 billion valuation to develop space interceptors for the US Golden Dome program. Observable Space secured a $90 million Series A alongside a $94 million US Space Force contract for space domain awareness. Rocket Lab was selected for the Golden Dome program alongside Raytheon, targeting a 200-satellite interceptor network. SpaceX received a $2.29 billion Space Force contract to build a military data network. Defense spending in space functions as one of the primary funding engines across the entire industry, not a side story.

Why space news feels confusing

The confusion comes from structure, not complexity.

Space coverage tends to treat each story as isolated. A launch here. A funding round there. A mission milestone somewhere else. Without a framework connecting them, every headline feels like a new puzzle piece with no picture on the box.

There is also a language problem. Terms like “payload capacity,” “LEO vs GEO,” “rideshare mission” and “launch contract” appear constantly without explanation. Each one carries specific meaning about strategy, economics and competitive positioning that the headline never surfaces.

And the timelines stretch in ways that make cause and effect invisible. A funding round today might not produce a launched satellite for three years. A contract signed in 2024 might not generate revenue until 2027. The people navigating space well are playing a long game and reading signals that have no obvious connection to near-term headlines.

That gap between the signal and the noise is where the interesting analysis lives.

Space is no longer a future industry. It is an infrastructure industry happening in real time. And like any infrastructure industry, the people who understand who controls it, how the economics actually work and where the hidden dependencies sit will read every headline differently from those who do not.

But that view misses what’s actually happening underneath.

This isn’t just about launch cadence anymore.

It’s about how a reusable launch system feeds into Starlink, how Starlink is turning into global internet infrastructure and how both start to sit inside a much larger ecosystem of compute, data and AI being built around the same core stack.

On paper, that stack is being framed against a $28.5 trillion addressable market across space, connectivity and AI.

In this article, we break down what that actually looks like in practice - starting with the shift in launch economics, moving into Starlink’s real-world scaling and monetization and then into the emerging AI layer being built around the broader ecosystem.

The chart that explains SpaceX IPO

If you look at this chart and see a rocket company growing fast. That’s true. But that’s not the interesting part. The first place this structure becomes visible is in launch economics.

Look at the dark bars at the bottom. Those represent new boosters flown each year. They barely move. Meanwhile, total annual launches go from 8 in 2016 to 165 in 2025.

This is the core shift.

SpaceX is doing more launches without proportionally building more rockets. They’re reusing the same hardware, over and over. In 2025, 157 out of 165 Falcon launches used flight-proven boosters, according to the S-1. That’s a 95% reuse rate.

Think about what that means for the cost structure. The booster is the most expensive part of a rocket. If you can land it, refurbish it and fly it again, your marginal cost per launch drops significantly with every additional flight on that booster. You’re spreading the manufacturing cost across more and more revenue events.

The inflection point in the chart is 2021-2022. That’s when reusability stopped being a talking point and started being an operational reality at scale. Launches went from 31 in 2021 to 61 in 2022, then nearly doubled again to 96 in 2023.

The business question investors should ask: who is filling all these rockets?

The answer, increasingly, is SpaceX itself. Starlink satellites are the primary payload. SpaceX is essentially its own best customer, using its own launch infrastructure to build a global internet business. The launch operation and the satellite network are not separate stories. They’re the same compounding flywheel.

That’s a very different model from a traditional aerospace contractor.

10.3 million subscribers and the map tells you where the next 50 million might come from

Look at the blue on that map carefully. It’s not where you’d expect.

Yes, the US and Europe are covered. But the density in Brazil, sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia is what should catch your eye. These are not wealthy, fiber-rich markets. These are places where terrestrial internet infrastructure is either poor, unreliable or simply nonexistent. And Starlink is already there.

That’s the market thesis in one image.

The subscriber growth behind the map is striking on its own. The S-1 reports approximately 10.3 million Starlink subscribers as of March 31, 2026, up roughly 105% from 5 million a year earlier.

That’s a doubling in 12 months. For context, this isn’t a startup finding product-market fit. This is a global ISP scaling at consumer internet company speed.

Now zoom out and look at the three revenue layers sitting on top of that subscriber base.

1. Consumer broadband is the foundation. Monthly subscriptions, one-time hardware cost, 164 countries. Simple and recurring.

2. Enterprise is where the pricing power gets interesting. United Airlines, Carnival, Maersk, John Deere are all named customers in the S-1. These aren’t backup solutions anymore. The S-1 notes that since 2023, no enterprise customer contributing more than $750,000 in annual revenue has voluntarily left, despite being able to cancel at any time. That’s a retention number worth pausing on.

3. Mobile is the wildcard. Starlink has partnerships with roughly 30 mobile network operators across six continents, covering a population of approximately 1.9 billion people. T-Mobile in the US, Telstra in Australia, KDDI in Japan. The model here is elegant: carriers pay SpaceX to eliminate dead zones, then pass the cost to subscribers as an add-on. SpaceX never has to acquire those end users directly.

The 7.4 million monthly unique mobile devices is early. The V1 constellation only supports texting and basic voice. Broadband data and IoT are still coming.

Here’s the question investors should be sitting with. When the V3 satellites launch via Starship in the second half of 2026, each carrying roughly 20 times the downlink capacity of current satellites, what does the subscriber ceiling actually look like?

The map is blue where people already have alternatives. The white space is the opportunity.

Third business hiding inside the SpaceX IPO S-1

rockets and internet are the obvious thing. But there’s a third segment that deserves serious attention. The same structural logic extends beyond connectivity.

xAI is not a side project. It’s a vertically integrated AI company with its own compute infrastructure, its own frontier model and a distribution platform with 550 million monthly active users. All of it sits inside this filing.

Start with the infrastructure, because that’s where the claim is most concrete.

COLOSSUS, xAI’s first AI training cluster, was brought online in 122 days. The industry benchmark for a 100 megawatt greenfield data center is roughly two years. COLOSSUS II came online even faster, in 91 days, at construction costs the S-1 describes as considerably below industry benchmarks per megawatt. These aren’t marketing numbers. They’re operational claims that, if they hold up, represent a genuine structural cost advantage in a business where infrastructure speed and cost are everything.

The combined compute capacity across both facilities is approximately 1.0 gigawatt. That’s a serious number. Most AI labs are still fighting over access to tens of megawatts.

Then there’s Terafab, a joint initiative with Tesla and Intel to build a manufacturing facility capable of producing 1 terawatt per year of compute hardware. The strategic logic here is straightforward. If chip supply becomes the binding constraint on AI scaling, the companies that control chip manufacturing control the ceiling. SpaceX I is trying to own that ceiling before it becomes a crisis.

Now look at the model itself.

Grok launched in November 2023. By April 2026, the company was on version 4.3. That’s four major versions in roughly 30 months, which the S-1 describes as one of the fastest iteration cycles in the industry. The competitive claim that stands out is the GPQA Diamond benchmark score, an academic test of scientific reasoning written and validated by domain experts. The S-1 says Grok reached frontier-level performance on this benchmark faster than any other leading model provider.

The real differentiator though is data.

X generates approximately 350 million posts per day. Grok has direct, real-time access to that stream. Every other frontier model is trained on data with some lag. Grok is being trained on what people are saying right now. For financial analysis, geopolitical events, breaking news and market sentiment, that’s not a small edge.

The distribution numbers are large. The integrated platforms across Grok and X had over 1.3 billion supported accounts active in the twelve months ending March 31, 2026, with approximately 550 million monthly active users. Of those, roughly 117 million used Grok’s AI features.

That 117 million is the number to watch. It’s the AI monetization funnel sitting inside a social platform most analysts have written off.

The enterprise angle is also worth noting. Grok Business and Grok Enterprise are sold on license, consumption or outcome-based pricing. The S-1 also points to existing government relationships as a structural advantage as public sector AI spending scales.

Here’s the investor thing that matters most. Every other AI lab is renting compute, buying chips on the open market and scraping public data. xAI owns the compute, is building toward owning the chips and has a proprietary real-time data stream that nobody else can replicate.

The infrastructure race in AI is a physical one. The S-1 says exactly that. Whoever controls the physical stack controls the outcome.

xAI is trying to own the stack end to end. That’s either the most important bet in this filing or the most expensive distraction. Figuring out which one is the real work.

The financials tell three very different stories

Total revenue grew from $10.4 billion in 2023 to $18.7 billion in 2025. That’s a clean, impressive headline. But the segment breakdown is where the real story lives and it’s more complicated than the top line suggests.

Connectivity is the profit engine. It generated $11.4 billion in revenue in 2025 and $4.4 billion in operating income. That’s a 39% operating margin on the segment. Starlink is not just growing fast, it’s growing profitably at scale. For context, this segment did $3.9 billion in revenue just two years earlier in 2023. It nearly tripled in two years while expanding margins dramatically.

Space broke even in 2024 and slipped back to a $657 million operating loss in 2025, largely driven by a jump in R&D spending from $1.8 billion to $3.0 billion. That’s Starship investment showing up in the income statement.

AI is the one that requires the most patience. The segment lost $6.4 billion from operations in 2025 on $3.2 billion of revenue, with capital expenditures of $12.7 billion in the same year. That capex number is the tell. xAI is spending at a pace that makes every other AI lab look cautious. Whether that’s visionary or reckless depends entirely on whether the infrastructure advantage compounds the way management believes it will.

The whole company is essentially structured as one profitable Starlink business funding two very expensive bets on the future.

Prices in the space sector have been moving fast. Multiples move even faster - but not always in a way that reflects the underlying businesses. The more stable signal sits a level deeper.

AST SpaceMobile welcomes AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon satellite joint venture

What happened: AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) publicly welcomed the announcement by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon to form a joint venture focused on satellite-based direct-to-device connectivity. Star Catcher raises $65 million for space power project

What happened: Star Catcher closed an oversubscribed $65 million Series A, bringing total funding to $88 million. B Capital led the round, with Shield Capital and Cerberus Ventures co-leading. Cerberus General John W. Raymond is joining the board. The company is building what it describes as the first power grid in space, using optical power beaming to deliver on-demand electricity to satellites.

Why it matters: Power is one of the real constraints on what satellites can do in orbit. Star Catcher’s approach targets that directly, with applications across connectivity, computing, security and sensing. The company plans to run its first in-orbit optical power beaming demonstration this year, moving from validated technology to live grid demonstrations.

Investor angle: Adding a former Space Force leader to the board signals the national security dimension here. The funding supports rapid mission cadence this year and a second orbital mission to follow. Investors appear to be treating orbital energy infrastructure as an emerging utility layer, though the key test is whether the technology holds up at scale.

Intuitive Machines acquires Goonhilly Earth Station and COMSAT

Expanding manufacturing into a third site shows the company is serious about scaling output rather than staying in prototype mode.

For investors, the expansion could improve production timelines and contract potential. The real question is whether the capital required to build out this footprint is matched by contract momentum. Virgin Galactic confirms plans to start commercial service this year

What happened: Virgin Galactic reported Q1 2026 results and confirmed it delivered its first new SpaceShip to its Test-and-Launch hangar, with ground testing now underway. A second SpaceShip is still in fabrication. The company remains on track for flight testing in Q3 2026 and its first commercial spaceflight in Q4 2026. Why it matters: This is a company that has been rebuilding after retiring its previous vehicle, so hitting these milestones matters. The financial transactions that cleared while you slept.

The disaster response teams that knew where the flood hit before the roads were passable. All of it runs on satellites. And the industry building those satellites is moving faster than at any point in history.

That is worth appreciating before we get into what follows. Because what follows is not an argument against the space industry. It is an argument for paying attention to a part of it that is not getting enough.

Every day, space debris burns up somewhere above Earth.

A spent rocket stage. A dead satellite from five years ago. A fragment from a collision that nobody caused on purpose. All of it is space debris. And it all comes down eventually, hitting the atmosphere at thousands of kilometers per hour and vaporizing in a streak of light.

Most people who see it call it beautiful. A few call it a fireworks show.

Scientists are starting to call it a pollution problem.

The space industry has spent years debating orbital debris collision risk, debris density and the Kessler cascade. Those are real problems worth debating. But while that conversation dominated the room, a quieter and in some ways stranger risk has been accumulating overhead: the atmospheric chemistry of burning space debris.

Every aluminium frame in a piece of space debris that vaporizes on reentry deposits aluminium oxide into the stratosphere. Every kerosene-burning rocket that punches through the sky leaves behind black carbon soot. Every Starlink satellite that reaches end of life and deorbits adds to a growing chemical fingerprint in the upper atmosphere.

The fingerprint is still small. But it is growing fast. Globally, regulation of environmental impacts from launches and satellite re-entries is still fragmented and incomplete.

Understanding this now, while the problem is still early, is exactly what gives the industry a chance to get ahead of it.

How much space debris is actually burning up

To understand the environmental scale of the problem you first need to understand how much space debris is actually reentering the atmosphere.

Starlink alone now operates more than 9,000 active satellites. SpaceX has FCC approval for 12,000 and has filed plans for up to 42,000. Amazon’s Project Kuiper, OneWeb and China’s Guowang constellation are each adding thousands more. The number of active satellites in low Earth orbit more than doubled between 2020 and 2025.

These are not built to last decades. Most LEO satellites operate for five to seven years before atmospheric drag and radiation make them unusable. That means the thousands of satellites launched today will become reentries within a decade. It is a conveyor belt, and the belt is speeding up.

Between 2020 and 2024, more than 500 Starlink satellites reentered Earth’s atmosphere. Many were deliberate deorbits after end of mission. Others failed and were pulled down by natural drag. With launches continuing and solar cycle activity accelerating reentries, the numbers will rise further in the years ahead.

According to a researcher at the University of Braunschweig, the total annual mass influx of material burning up in the upper atmosphere exceeded 2 kilotons for the first time in 2025. That figure is dominated by rockets breaking up, but the proportion from megaconstellation satellites is small and growing.

Put simply: the rate at which hardware is entering and burning in the atmosphere has never been higher. And nobody has been running an environmental tab on what that means.

The industry that built this infrastructure is also the industry best placed to solve what comes with it. But solving it requires knowing the problem exists. That starts here.

What actually happens when space debris burns up in the atmosphere

Satellites are mostly made of aluminium. It is light, strong and practical for space hardware. When a piece of space debris reenters the atmosphere at orbital velocity, it superheats and vaporizes. The aluminium reacts with oxygen and becomes aluminium oxide, also known as alumina.

Alumina is a white powdery substance. It is chemically stable and does not easily wash out of the stratosphere. It can linger for years after it forms.

That stability is the problem.

A peer-reviewed study published in Geophysical Research Letters by researchers at the University of Southern California found that alumina particles catalyze the same kind of chlorine activation reactions that deplete ozone. When alumina surfaces are present in the stratosphere, they act as a reaction platform that converts reservoir chlorine into ozone-destroying forms.

This is not a new chemical phenomenon. Alumina from solid rocket motor exhaust has been studied since the 1990s. What is new is the scale.

In 2022 alone, reentering satellites released an estimated 17 metric tons of aluminium oxide nanoparticles into the stratosphere. At current megaconstellation growth rates, researchers at NOAA’s Chemical Sciences Laboratory project that by 2040 the annual human-made contribution of alumina could approach 10 times the amount that arrives naturally from incinerated meteorites.

A NOAA study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres found that at projected reentry levels, alumina aerosols could alter polar vortex speeds, heat parts of the mesosphere by as much as 1.5 degrees Celsius and impact the ozone layer. The metal aerosols would likely circulate in the stratosphere for several years before clearing.

The ozone layer is already recovering from decades of CFC damage. By 2025, satellites were reporting one of the smallest Antarctic ozone holes since the recovery began. The last thing that recovery needs is a new source of ozone-depleting chemistry arriving from overhead.

The first direct measurement of space debris atmospheric pollution

For a long time, the atmospheric impact of reentries was mostly modeled rather than measured. Researchers built simulations, ran projections and published warnings. But direct observation of a specific reentry pollution event had never been achieved.

That changed in February 2026.

Researchers at the Leibniz Institute for Atmospheric Physics in Germany published a landmark study in Communications Earth and Environment, the first time scientists had tied a specific reentry event to a detectable atmospheric pollution plume. Their instrument, a highly sensitive resonance fluorescence lidar system that routinely monitors the upper atmosphere, detected a sudden spike in lithium vapor on the night of February 20, 2025.

Lithium concentrations jumped tenfold, from roughly 3 atoms per cubic centimeter to 31, at altitudes between 94.5 and 96.8 kilometers.

Researchers linked the event to the reentry of a Falcon 9 upper stage that had previously delivered 22 Starlink satellites to orbit. After drifting uncontrolled for 18 days, it reentered off the west coast of Ireland. Tracking analyses suggested that debris fragments may have reached parts of Central Europe.

This was the first direct, instrument-verified measurement of a specific spacecraft’s atmospheric pollution signature. It confirmed what models had been predicting: reentries leave measurable chemical traces in the upper atmosphere, and those traces are detectable with the right equipment.

It also raised an obvious follow-on question. If one uncontrolled Falcon 9 stage produced a tenfold spike in lithium that scientists happened to catch with a single ground-based instrument in Germany, what is the cumulative background signal of hundreds of satellite reentries per year doing to the broader atmospheric chemistry? The honest answer is that nobody knows yet.

Space debris and rocket launches: the pollution problem on the way up

The atmospheric damage from the space industry does not only happen on the way down. It starts on the way up.

A Falcon 9 rocket requires around 50,000 gallons of kerosene fuel per launch and emits at least 5 metric tons of black carbon per flight. In 2025 alone, humans launched approximately 320 rockets into space. That is nearly three times the number from five years ago.

Black carbon is particularly damaging in the stratosphere for reasons that are different from its behavior near the ground. Near the surface, soot quickly gets rained out. In the dry stratosphere, where there are no clouds to wash it away, black carbon accumulates and persists. It absorbs solar radiation, heats the atmosphere around it and accelerates ozone-depleting chemical reactions.

Research from Columbia University’s climate science group found a mechanism that was not previously well understood: black carbon from rockets heats the tropopause, the boundary between the lower and upper atmosphere, allowing water vapor to leak into the stratosphere. Water vapor in the stratosphere further destroys ozone.

A study published in Nature’s npj Climate and Atmospheric Science modeled two scenarios for launch growth. In their conservative scenario of 884 launches per year, near-global annual ozone depletion reached 0.17%. In their more ambitious scenario of 2,040 launches per year, Antarctic springtime ozone depletion reached 3.9%. The paper noted that current licensing rates suggest the conservative scenario may be exceeded before 2030.

To put that in context: the ozone layer is still recovering from CFCs. Global mean ozone abundance is still roughly 2% lower than levels measured before CFC-induced depletion began. A new source of ozone chemistry arriving from above, at scale, is not something the recovery trajectory can simply absorb.

Researchers at ETH Zurich summarized the situation bluntly: the space industry is slowing down the repairing of the ozone hole. They also noted that only about 6% of rocket launches currently use cryogenic hydrogen fuel, which has a negligible ozone impact. The remaining 94% use propellants that produce chlorine, soot or both.

The space debris regulatory blind spot

Here is the part that is genuinely strange once you see it. And also, if you are paying attention, the part that looks like an opportunity.

The aviation industry has detailed environmental regulations for engine emissions. The shipping industry has rules about fuel sulfur content and exhaust scrubbers. Even the car industry has been subject to decades of emissions standards.

The space industry has minimal amount of it. Naturally as it still small industry.

No country currently requires a satellite operator to submit an atmospheric environmental impact assessment before launch. No regulatory framework quantifies the cumulative ozone impact of a planned megaconstellation. No regulator has issued binding standards on the atmospheric chemistry of satellite reentry.

The UN’s 2022 Quadrennial Assessment of Ozone Depletion noted explicitly that significant unknowns about spaceflight activities prevent a reliable assessment of their contribution to global ozone layer loss. In other words: the authoritative scientific body on ozone cannot yet quantify the damage because the data collection does not exist at the level needed.

The FCC’s 5-year deorbit rule, which came into effect in September 2024, addresses how quickly a satellite must be removed from orbit after end of mission. It says nothing about what the space debris does to the atmosphere when it burns up.

The Montreal Protocol successfully coordinated a global phaseout of CFCs across dozens of countries over decades. It is the most successful environmental treaty in history. But it was written before commercial satellite megaconstellations existed. Nobody thought to include provisions for stratospheric alumina from deorbiting spacecraft, because in 1987 that was not a meaningful source of anything.

It is now.

The gap between where the science is and where the regulation is represents real risk for operators who are not paying attention. It also represents a real advantage for those who are. Companies that understand what is coming can shape how the frameworks develop, rather than react to them after the fact.

How fast is space debris actually growing

It is worth being precise about the current situation versus the projected one.

Right now, MIT Technology Review estimates that the space industry’s current contribution to overall ozone depletion is roughly 0.1%. That is not nothing, but it is small relative to the damage from CFCs at their peak.

The issue is trajectory, not current magnitude.

Estimates suggest the number of satellites in LEO could exceed 60,000 by 2040. If megaconstellation growth continues at its current pace, the annual reentry mass flux from satellites will approach and may eventually exceed the natural meteoroid mass flux into the atmosphere. That would make human space activity a dominant driver of upper atmospheric chemistry, not a marginal one.

The NOAA Chemical Sciences Laboratory study modeled alumina aerosol scenarios consistent with that growth trajectory and found that at those levels, the aerosols could alter polar vortex speeds and heat parts of the mesosphere by up to 1.5 degrees Celsius. These are not catastrophic numbers in isolation. But they would represent a persistent, human-caused perturbation to the upper atmosphere from a source that current regulations do not address at all.

The 2025 NOAA study also noted that the alumina aerosols produced by reentries would likely remain in the stratosphere for several years. This is cumulative, not episodic. Each year’s reentries add to the previous year’s deposit.

The solar cycle is making space debris reentry more unpredictable

There is a natural force making the reentry numbers less predictable: the sun.

We are currently in an active phase of Solar Cycle 25. Solar maximum, the peak of the 11-year activity cycle, brings more frequent geomagnetic storms. Those storms heat Earth’s upper atmosphere, causing it to expand outward.

For satellites in low Earth orbit, that expansion increases atmospheric drag. Satellites lose altitude faster than planned. Some fail and reenter before they can be properly deorbited.

A study analyzing Starlink orbital data found that satellites orbiting below 300 kilometers can lose up to ten days of expected lifespan during strong geomagnetic storms. During the major May 2024 Gannon storm, 12 Starlink satellites that were in low parking orbits experienced accelerated decay and reentered well ahead of schedule.

This is the first solar maximum to coincide with the rapid expansion of satellite megaconstellations. In January 2026, ESA’s Space Weather Office monitored a severe solar event that reached S4 severity, one of the most intense radiation storms on record, with the potential to affect Earth-orbiting satellites, power grids and aviation.

The interaction between solar activity and satellite populations creates an extra layer of unpredictability for the reentry problem. Operators can plan controlled deorbits. They cannot plan for a geomagnetic storm that pulls satellites down faster than expected. Those unplanned reentries are less controlled, less predictable in where they land and less chemically contained in terms of what they release and where.

Here’s what was on the program this year.

The day opened with a clear signal about where VytahConf stands today. Michal Brichta from the Ministry of Economy took the stage, followed by an MOU signing and a contribution from Imrich Petruf, Chief Defense Advisor at Aliter Technologies, a CEE company that develops specialized technologies for NATO and defense.

Services: earth observation, data and the space supply chain

The day opened with a block on commercial space services, hosted by Juraj Zamecnik, co-founder of 3IPK. Zamecnik brings serious credentials to that role: he previously held senior positions at Airbus Commercial Aircraft and Airbus Defence and Space before co-founding 3IPK in 2019. His company became the first in the world to deploy blockchain-based data authentication software on the ISS in April 2025, guaranteeing the traceability and integrity of satellite imagery from sensor to final product.

The session brought together three companies working at the commercial end of earth observation. Géraldine Caudron from Airbus, who covers Northern and Eastern Europe for their intelligence business line, presented alongside Andrea Montieri from Latitudo 40, an Italian company that fuses satellite imagery with AI to deliver hyper-local intelligence for smart cities, urban planning and infrastructure monitoring through their EarthDataInsights platform.

Kartik Kumar, CEO of Satsearch, rounded out the block. Satsearch is a global marketplace connecting buyers and suppliers across the space supply chain, built on the idea that sourcing components and services for space missions should not require knowing the right people.

Kumar started the company during his PhD at Delft University of Technology and took it through ESA’s Business Incubation Programme. As the number of companies building hardware for orbit keeps growing, the supply chain problem gets harder. Satsearch is building the infrastructure layer for that.

Labtech: microgravity and biotech

Block two brought together two companies working at the intersection of space and life sciences.

Joao Fonseca, chairman of Biosurfit, is a scientist and inventor with over 20 years in AI-powered diagnostics. Biosurfit builds compact lab-on-a-disc platforms that deliver blood test results in minutes, and the company has been advancing point-of-care diagnostics for space missions through an ESA Space Health initiative. The applications extend well beyond orbit.

Alongside him, Fotios Kotzakioulafis represented Genesis Space Flight Laboratories, which develops returnable orbital capsules that make microgravity research and in-space manufacturing accessible without booking time on the ISS. Genesis launched their first vehicle, MayaSat-1, on SpaceX Transporter-14 in June 2025 and has three more launches secured for 2026.

They are already building toward a larger vehicle for 2027 to serve industrial customers. That is a real commercial pipeline, not a concept slide.

Urban focused EO: satellite data for cities

Running in parallel was a dedicated earth observation session aimed at city planners and non-space professionals. Peter Vanik from EUSPA gave a practical introduction to how satellite data is being used in urban contexts.

This is exactly the kind of session VytahConf was designed for: making space technology legible to decision-makers who build and run cities, not satellites.

Spacetech: hardware, propulsion and commercial stations

Block three went deeper into hardware and infrastructure.

Ondrej Krepl from Stellar Exploration, a Czech company with 28 engineers building power systems, propulsion and RF technologies for small satellites, presented alongside Gabor B. Magyari from Axiom Space, which is developing the world’s first commercial space station and currently serves as the principal provider of commercial human spaceflight to the ISS.

Tomas Hamann, founder of AstroWorks, an Amsterdam-based space consultancy launched in 2025, rounded out the block. AstroWorks has been working with OX on MoonPort, a concept for a European lunar spaceport.

Early stage, but it captures the long-horizon thinking that VytahConf tends to encourage.

Start and growth: how space startups actually build a business

This block was the most directly useful for operators and investors.

Marek Košuda from ESA BIC walked through the institutional funding landscape. ESA BIC is one of the most practical entry points for European space startups, with each company receiving up to €60,000 alongside coaching, technical support and legal guidance. Alastair Reynolds closed the day. He spent eleven years as an astrophysicist at ESA before becoming one of the most respected science fiction writers working today, with 22 novels focused largely on humanity’s long-term future in space.

Choosing him as keynote is a deliberate signal. VytahConf is trying to shape how a region thinks about where the space economy is going over the next few decades. Reynolds is exactly the right person to close a day like that.

Why it matters

The CEE space ecosystem is maturing fast. ESA BIC programmes, CERN spinouts, Visegrad Fund collaboration and growing NATO interest in commercial space are all moving in the same direction. VytahConf is where that momentum comes together.

New Glenn’s third launch has upper stage malfunction

Electron launches cubesats in Japan

What happened: Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB) completed its 21st Electron launch of 2025 on December 21, deploying a synthetic aperture radar satellite for Japanese Earth imaging company iQPS. The mission marked a new annual launch record for Electron, with 100% mission success across all 21 flights. The company has now completed 79 Electron missions overall and has five more iQPS launches planned for 2026.

Why it matters: The record cements Electron’s position as the most frequently launched small-lift orbital rocket in the world and the leading small launch vehicle in the U.S. market. Consistent execution at this cadence is commercially significant because satellite operators need reliable, dedicated launch access on a predictable schedule. Rocket Lab’s growing roster of multi-launch constellation contracts, including defense and government missions planned for 2026, points to a deepening order book beyond one-off commercial payloads.

Investor angle: For RKLB investors, launch cadence and mission success rate are two of the most important operational metrics to track. A 21-launch year with zero failures strengthens the reliability case that underpins future contract wins. The 2026 pipeline, which includes civil space agencies, defense applications and hypersonic test launches, suggests revenue diversification beyond commercial smallsat customers. The larger question remains Neutron, Rocket Lab’s medium-lift vehicle in development, and how that program progresses alongside Electron’s continued scaling.

The next decade adds autonomous vehicles that depend on satellite positioning, climate monitoring systems that run on Earth observation data and supply chains that route through space-based logistics networks.

This industry will become more of a infrastructure

Where space begins and why the line matters

Space starts at 100 kilometers straight up.

That’s the Karman Line, the point where the atmosphere gets too thin for a wing to generate lift.

Cross it and a completely different set of physics takes over.

Below it, you have aviation regulations, airport infrastructure and jet fuel economics.

Above it, you have orbital mechanics, radiation environments and vacuum engineering.

For investors, this line is more than geography. It’s a market boundary.

Every company operating above 100 kilometers is playing by different rules, facing different costs and solving different problems than anything in the aviation or defense industries.

That matters when you’re trying to compare business models, evaluate burn rates or understand why a space hardware company takes so much to reach revenue.

The International Space Station sits at 400 kilometers. Starlink satellites orbit at 550. GPS lives at 20,000 kilometers. Your TV’s geostationary satellite hovers at exactly 35,786 kilometers, the only altitude where orbital speed matches Earth’s rotation, making the satellite appear completely stationary from the ground.

Each of those altitude choices is a deliberate engineering trade-off. Higher means slower signals but wider coverage. Lower means faster connections but you need thousands of satellites to cover the planet.

That’s the first rule of space engineering. Everything is a trade-off. And every trade-off has a business consequence.

The Sun can be a friend one day and an enemy the next

The Sun doesn’t just send us light and warmth.

It sends a constant stream of charged particles called the solar wind, traveling at up to 700 kilometers per second. Every spacecraft in the solar system is sitting inside that stream right now.

Now and then, the Sun burps out energy.

Solar flares and Coronal Mass Ejections send massive energy bursts toward Earth that can fry satellite electronics, disrupt GPS signals and knock out power grids on the ground. The GOES-7 weather satellite had its operational life cut short by exactly this kind of event.

For a startup building satellite hardware, that’s an existential risk baked into the environment. For an investor evaluating a satellite company, it means asking: how radiation-hardened is the hardware and what does that cost?

Earth’s magnetosphere blocks most of it. But it also traps particles in bands around the planet called the Van Allen belts, radioactive zones that satellite designers actively route around or engineer against.

The deeper you go into this, the more you realize how much of the space industry is fundamentally about surviving the Sun. That shapes material choices, orbit selection, insurance costs and mission timelines all at once.

The Space environment is very much different than the one on Earth

Space doesn’t cut you any slack. Radiation can make lead dangerous instead of protective, water can act as armor and the orbit you pick changes everything - from signal speed to satellite life.

That framing is about to expire.

Over the next few decades, the Moon is more likely to become infrastructure. A permanent node in humanity’s expanding presence in space, with its own economy, supply chains, resource base and eventually, a population of people who live and work there.

The trajectory is already visible in some of the contracts being signed, the missions being launched and the companies being built today.

What follows is a map of where this could go.

Lunar resources: the foundation of everything

The economic case for the Moon starts with what is already there.

Water ice sits in permanently shadowed craters at the lunar south pole, confirmed by multiple missions. This is not a small detail. Water can be split into hydrogen and oxygen using solar power, producing rocket propellant from local materials.

That single capability changes the cost structure of space exploration entirely.

Right now, everything that goes into space is launched from Earth. Every kilogram of propellant costs at least $7,000 to lift to low Earth orbit depending on the vehicle. Missions to Mars, the asteroid belt or the outer planets require enormous amounts of propellant. If you can manufacture that propellant on the Moon and deliver it to spacecraft in lunar orbit, you cut the cost of the entire deep space economy by an order of magnitude.

The Moon becomes a gas station at the edge of the solar system. And the water ice is the crude oil.

Beyond water, the lunar regolith, the loose dust and rock that covers the surface, contains ilmenite, a mineral rich in iron, titanium and oxygen. It contains rare earth elements that are in high demand for electronics and clean energy technologies on Earth. And it contains helium-3, a rare isotope that barely exists on Earth and has potential as a fuel for fusion reactors. Helium-3 is so scarce on Earth that a viable fusion energy industry would almost certainly need an off-Earth supply.

None of this is easy to extract. But none of it is theoretical either. The resources are confirmed. The extraction methods are understood in principle. What is missing is the infrastructure to do it at scale and that infrastructure is being built right now.

Lunar colonization: from outpost to settlement

The word colonization carries weight. It should. The history of terrestrial colonization is complicated and often violent. Lunar colonization will face different pressures but will need to navigate governance, resource rights and the question of who gets access to what.

With that caveat stated, the technical trajectory toward a permanent human presence on the Moon is clearer than it has been at any point since Apollo.

The starting point is a research outpost. Something like the Antarctic stations humans maintain at the South Pole, where scientists and engineers live and work in harsh conditions for months at a time. NASA’s Artemis program is explicitly aimed at this: a long-term presence at the lunar south pole, chosen partly because of the water ice resources and partly because some ridge crests near the pole receive near-continuous sunlight, enabling solar power generation almost indefinitely.

The next phase is infrastructure expansion. Once you have reliable power and water, you can support more people and more activity. Habitats can be expanded. Landing pads can be built. Roads, in the sense of cleared, stabilized paths for rovers and vehicles, can be constructed.

Then comes the economic layer. When the infrastructure exists and access is reliable, activities that generate commercial value become possible. Resource extraction, manufacturing, research services, communications relay, tourism. Each of these creates demand for labor, logistics and services. And where there is demand for these things, there is eventually a community.

That is the arc from outpost to settlement. It took decades in Antarctica and the poles were never economically viable destinations. The Moon is different because the resources have commercial value and the access cost is falling rapidly.

Lunar colonization is not imminent. But it is no longer implausible within most people’s lifetimes.

In-space manufacturing: what you can only make off-Earth

The Moon and the space around it offer manufacturing conditions that are impossible to replicate on Earth.

Near-perfect vacuum. Extreme temperature ranges. Microgravity. Unfiltered solar radiation. These conditions, which make lunar survival difficult for humans, make certain industrial processes much easier.

Fiber optic cables made in microgravity have a more uniform molecular structure than those made on Earth. Pharmaceutical crystals grown in space have properties that cannot be achieved in gravity. Certain alloys and composites can be produced with combinations of materials that would not mix under Earth’s gravitational field.

The early evidence is there. Commercial space companies are already conducting microgravity pharmaceutical experiments and returning the resulting compounds to Earth, with firms like Varda Space producing drug crystals in orbit and companies like Axiom Space enabling such research missions.

As lunar infrastructure matures, in-space manufacturing will migrate from low Earth orbit to cislunar space and eventually to the lunar surface itself for products that benefit from low gravity and ready access to local raw materials. Lunar-origin materials for construction. Oxygen produced from regolith for life support. Metals smelted in place for use in building further infrastructure.

The Moon does not just supply Earth. Eventually it supplies itself.

Space debris: the problem that follows us everywhere

Here is the uncomfortable part of this story.

Earth orbit already has a debris problem. Roughly 27,000 pieces of debris large enough to track are currently in orbit, along with millions of smaller fragments moving at orbital velocities fast enough to damage or destroy any spacecraft they hit. The risk is real and growing.

The Moon is not immune. As lunar missions multiply, the space around the Moon, known as cislunar space, will accumulate its own debris population. Spent rocket stages, defunct satellites, mission hardware left in orbit. There is currently no debris removal capability designed specifically for cislunar space and no international regulatory framework that requires cleanup.

This is not hypothetical. The problem is already beginning. A rocket body believed to be a Chinese Long March rocket stage impacted the lunar surface in 2022. There was no cleanup mechanism because none exists.

The debris question matters for the lunar economy in a practical way. Cislunar orbits are finite and valuable. A crowded, debris-filled approach to the Moon is more dangerous and more expensive to operate in. The lesson from low Earth orbit is that the time to address debris is before it becomes a crisis, not after.

Companies like Astroscale are developing debris removal capabilities for Earth orbit. The same technology and regulatory frameworks will eventually need to extend to cislunar space. The lunar economy needs clean roads to operate on.

Communications and navigation: the internet of the Moon

Any permanent lunar presence needs communication infrastructure. Missions operating on the far side of the Moon cannot communicate directly with Earth. Missions on the south pole need continuous relay capability. Multiple simultaneous operations on the surface will need positioning and navigation services to coordinate safely.

This is why NASA awarded Intuitive Machines a contract worth up to $4.82 billion to build and operate a lunar relay satellite network, providing communications, navigation and data services on and around the Moon. The parallel to terrestrial internet infrastructure is direct: before you can have a digital economy on the Moon, you need connectivity.

The communications layer will be one of the earliest commercial opportunities to generate real recurring revenue in the lunar economy. It does not require humans on the surface. It does not require resource extraction to be economically proven. It just requires missions to keep flying and those missions are already on the schedule.

In two decades, cislunar communications infrastructure could look something like early satellite internet. Expensive, limited coverage, used primarily by institutions and governments. The transition to broader access follows the transition to higher mission volumes. And mission volumes are increasing every year.

Energy: powering a civilization on the Moon

Power is the bottleneck for everything else.

The lunar night lasts about 14 Earth days. Temperatures drop to minus 170 degrees Celsius due to lack of atmosphere. Solar panels stop generating power. Batteries drain. Without a solution to the power gap, lunar operations are limited to “one lunar day” at a time, roughly two Earth weeks.

Several approaches are being developed. Vertical solar arrays positioned on crater rims near the poles can capture near-continuous sunlight even as the terrain below falls into shadow. Nuclear fission reactors can generate power independent of sunlight. Regenerative fuel cells can store solar energy during the day and convert it back to electricity at night.

These are not exotic technologies. They are engineering challenges, not physics challenges. The solutions exist. The question is csot, reliability and deployment logistics.

Once power is solved, the lunar economy’s timeline accelerates. Sustained power enables sustained operations. Sustained operations enable permanent habitation. Permanent habitation enables an economy that does not depend on Earth for every input.

The Moon has abundant solar energy, rare materials and confirmed water. What it needs is the infrastructure to convert those inputs into productive output. Power is the first input.

Lunar tourism: the passenger service moment

The aviation parallel is useful again here.

In the 1920s, passengers flew in airplanes as a curiosity. Flying was expensive, dangerous and uncomfortable. Only the very wealthy or the very adventurous did it. Then infrastructure improved, aircraft became safer and larger and the economics shifted. By the 1950s, commercial aviation was becoming a mass-market product.

Lunar tourism is currently in the “wealthy curiosity” phase.

As launch costs fall with Starship and other next-generation vehicles, as infrastructure on and around the Moon matures and as the experience of flying to cislunar space accumulates flight heritage and safety data, tourism will gradually shift from billionaire novelty to aspirational luxury travel. That is a decades-long trajectory. But it is the same trajectory aviation followed and it ended with 4.5 billion passenger journeys per year.

The first lunar hotel is not around the corner. But the first lunar flyby passengers are being planned for right now. And the first thing that changes an emerging market from theoretical to real is a paying customer.

The governance question

The 1967 Outer Space Treaty established that no nation can claim sovereignty over the Moon or any other celestial body. The Artemis Accords, signed by over 50 countries as of 2025, extend this framework to commercial operations, establishing norms around resource extraction, interoperability and the protection of heritage sites.

But there is no equivalent of the World Trade Organization for space. There is no lunar equivalent of maritime law. There is no agreed framework for resolving disputes between competing resource extraction operations, or for managing shared infrastructure, or for determining who has right of way in a crowded cislunar orbit.

These questions are abstract right now because the lunar economy is small. They will not be abstract for long. The nations and companies that establish operational presence earliest will have the most influence over the norms that eventually get written. That dynamic should be familiar to anyone who has watched the internet develop under the informal governance of its early infrastructure owners.

The governance of the lunar economy is one of the most consequential policy questions of the next 20 years. It is also one of the least discussed.

The 30-year arc

Let’s try to sketch a rough timeline. Not a forecast. A plausible trajectory.

By the early 2030s: Crewed missions to the lunar south pole. A permanent but small research outpost with rotating crews. Regular commercial payload delivery. A functioning cislunar communications network. The first in-situ resource utilization demonstrations at scale.

By the late 2030s: Power infrastructure deployed near the south pole enabling year-round operations. Early resource extraction producing small quantities of propellant for use in lunar orbit. The first commercial lunar tourism flights at premium pricing. Growing non-NASA demand for lunar payload delivery services.
