Today Owly will take you to a special spot, hidden beneath the busy city of Alexandria in Egypt. There lies a mysterious and ancient place called the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa. The name might sound a little tricky, but it means “Mound of Shards” because people used to leave broken pottery outside the tombs long ago. These catacombs were built almost 2,000 years ago, around the 2nd century AD, and they are one of the most fascinating underground burial sites in the world!

What makes the Catacombs so cool is that they mix together styles from three different cultures: Egyptian, Greek, and Roman. That’s right — it’s like a history sandwich! You can see statues and carvings of Egyptian gods, like Anubis, the jackal-headed god of the dead, but he’s dressed like a Roman soldier.

There are also fancy Greek-style columns and decorations. This mix of styles shows how people in Alexandria lived together and shared ideas from their different backgrounds.

The catacombs go down three levels underground (though the lowest is flooded today). The walls are filled with carvings and sculptures, and there’s even a big circular room called the rotunda, where families would gather to honor their loved ones. Another interesting area is the triclinium, a Roman-style dining room where people would have feasts to remember the dead. Can you imagine eating with mummies?

Game Idea from Owly!

Make cards showing Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art or symbols. Mix them up, and kids have to match which one belongs to which culture. This helps kids see the different styles found in the catacombs. You can print out this or use this collection of ancient symbols for inspiration:

How is everyone doing? I know for our friends in the northern hemisphere summer is just beginning... It's a time to soak up the sun, hang out with friends and enjoy the fresh air.

But just because the weather has turned fine doesn’t mean our Classical KIDS have stopped their love of learning... in fact we received some awesome KIDS responses to Owly’s video at the Sphinx. Owly had a few cool challenges, which (as you can see below) the kids totally nailed. Read on for amazing animal inventions, Cleopatra’s travel, King Tut’s eyes and his mummy grandparents…

My statue is a zombie cat. The zombie part scares off the people trying to steal the gold. The Kitty part is cute so the thieves come over - they get bit in just one bite - then they are bye, bye!

Hi Frida & Owly,

I think the sphinx is the Egyptians’ ancestors, and they are protecting the jewelry - to make their ancestors happy and informed.

If they steal the jewelry, the ancestors will go to the house of whoever is stealing and put a curse on them, to remind them that the jewelry is important.

My statue is called Hope and Courage. Half human and half snake. The snake part means fearless, speed, and bravery, The human part means thinking, believing, and making sure.

Frida: Hi Eleven, I think that maybe the Egyptians are STILL sphinxes, just in disguise! The ancient jewelry is really beautiful and stunning. I can see why they want to protect it!

What’s your favorite type of stone? There is a type of stone Egypt is famous for—Lapis lazuli, and it’s even in the eyes of king Tut's mask! (The one they put on his coffin.)

Thank you very much! I like your owl. Do you see mummies? Did you see zombies there? Is there electricity there? I think not, because in Egypt there was no electricity. Are there songs there?

My Cat Nap Spider Nap is half human/half spider. It can shoot webs…Because if there is an enemy there he can shoot webs. The human part can dodge things.

I think the sphinx was a mummy and made to freak people up.

I made an axolotl puffer fish. Axolotl stands for growth because they can regrow their legs, arms, tail, brain, gills, and heart! The puffer fish stands for intelligence. When we went to the Sphinx, we had to go up a really cool passageway that was SOOOOOO HOT! So we took some videos and LEFT!

Did you know that the Sphinx was made of one single limestone? Can you imagine carving it?

The Pyramids, together with the Sphinx, are the ONLY ANCIENT WONDERS standing.

What is an Ancient Wonder? Well, a long time ago there were the ‘ANCIENT WONDERS OF THE WORLD’ which were:

• Great Pyramid and Sphinx in Giza

• Hanging Garden of Babylon

• Colossus of Rhodes

• Lighthouse of Alexandria

• Statue of Zeus at Olympia

• Temple of Artemis at Ephesus

• Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

I always wondered who and why would knock them down, and more amazingly HOW?

Did you know why those ancient wonders are so important? It’s not only their impressive size. Consider this: if you where to make something like that now, you’d have cranes and drills, but they had to do it with a hammer and chisel. Imagine how hard that was!

I also thought of a fun game for you… Try to make a doll or stick or something to represent a human, build a mini sphinx or pyramid out of mud or clay with only sticks and stones. If you are going to the beach this weekend, you can try it on the sand as well.

Here’s another one: The Sphinx is part human, part cat. The cat was chosen because it symbolizes protection and power in ancient Egypt. If you were to make a creature that you would want to carve in stone, what animal would you choose and why?

While the Sphinx in Egypt was a guardian and protector, the Sphinx in Greece was actually a monster that would give travelers a riddle… and if they didn’t get it right, the Sphinx would eat them! Read the riddle below and see if you will make it:

When we went to the pyramids recently, we started our journey by riding a camel! They were kind of smelly… and one tried to eat my shoe… but we didn’t mind. They took us around the pyramids and through the desert.

After a bumpy ride (get it?) we finally saw the pyramids up close! Which was SO cool, because they are WAAAY bigger than they look in the photos!

We also saw SPHINX! (Owly will show you more on the sphinx later.) Then we went to a really cool restaurant where you could see the pyramids while you drink a juice, which was necessary in the heat! (Which juice would you pick?)

Owly says, “Can you please show me your language? Or, even better, send me a note! If you don’t want to make your own language, you can send us a letter with Frida’s language!”

We started with nouns (including proper nouns and pronouns) verbs, adjectives and, of course, cat breeds. My favorite cat breed is the snowshoe. I’ll keep working on it and will show you a finished picture when it’s done.

‘Where Can Classics Take You?’

Like many HSS subjects, classical studies faces funding cuts and department downsizing. Schools are seeing low student uptake with many teachers struggling to keep their scheduled timetables or are losing their subject altogether. Students, particularly in state schools, aren’t getting the opportunity to study classics and later on face pressure to choose ‘practical’ or job-specific degrees.

As a publisher of books for teachers and students from KS3 to PhD (and beyond) we want to celebrate those who are working hard to keep this amazing subject alive and to showcase the transferable skills and career opportunities that studying classics can lead to.

So far we’ve launched a digital magazine, which you can read here. In its virtual pages you’ll find interviews, stories and personal accounts. Plus, you’ll find book recommendations and resources from our partners to help you find out more about classics and the communities available to you.

Learning ancient Greek in our modern world isn’t always so easy... this is partly because there aren’t many ancient Greek speakers, teachers who can help the next generation learn. Also, there aren’t so many resources to aid those in their learning journey.

That is why what Eugenia has been doing at Elliniki Agogi has been so important. Not only are they passing the wisdom of their ancestral language, but also creating fun new ways to learn and practice it. 

We were so lucky, in fact, to test out Eugenia’s newest books which teach the alphabet and vocabulary. Frida, in particular, loves the dry erase notebook and will eagerly practice her ancient Greek practice on it. A definite win in for everyone!

In ancient texts, "λέγω" was often associated with declarations, discourse, and the act of conveying thoughts or ideas...so you can see how the ancient Greeks used it 'to speak'.  

Over time, it has been used in various forms across different dialects of Greek and has influenced many derived terms in modern Greek, such as "λόγος" (logos), meaning "word" or "reason," as well as a lot of words we use today in English.

Apology: From "ἀπολογία" (apologia), meaning "defense," it originally referred to a formal defense of one's actions or beliefs.

Prologue: From "πρόλογος" (prologos), meaning "before speech," it refers to an introduction to a literary work or play.

Eulogy: From "εὐλογία" (eulogia), meaning "good word," it refers to a speech or writing in praise of someone, typically at a funeral.

Questions:  

1. What does the Greek word λέγω mean? 

2. How does λέγω connect to modern words like dialogue and logic?

3. Can you think of other words that come from λέγω? 

Activities:  

1. Create Your Own Dialogue: Think of two characters - maybe from your favorite book, movie, or even two historical figures. Write a short dialogue between them about an interesting topic, like a fun adventure or a new discovery. Share your dialogue with a friend! 

2. Craft a Logical Puzzle: Using your reasoning skills, create a logic puzzle that  challenges others to think carefully. It could be a riddle or a set of clues that lead to a solution. For example: "I speak without a mouth, but words flow through me. What am I?" (Answer: an echo). 

3. Present a Monologue: Choose a topic you feel passionate about—whether it's a hobby, an interesting fact, or a story you love. Write a short monologue about it, then present it aloud to practice speaking clearly and confidently.

For those who missed it, last Wednesday we had a ‘virtual tour’ of the Musei Capitolini in Roma, Italy. It was a blast! But as it’s a kids event, we can not record it... so I thought it would be fun to share my notes with you, in case any parent or teacher would like to recreate the event. 

We used the arts and Culture segment on Google, so I have instructions, along with images below, so you can enjoy the tour. As you will see, I have written it out as ‘notes’, and of course you can add more or less details depending on the age and interest of the kids. There are plenty of more exciting rooms - but this activity took us about an hour all up, with lots of interaction from the kids.

I tried to include at least ONE GAME per room (in bold). These were a great success… Have a look and let me know which ones you enjoyed!

First, a little history about the museum itself. The Musei Capitolini dates back to 1471, when Pope Sixtus IV donated a group of bronze statues that until then had been kept at the Lateran. These are the core collection, but various popes subsequently expanded the collection with works taken from excavations around Rome. Lots of archaeological material was added at the end of the nineteenth century when Rome became the capital of Italy and new excavations were carried out.

Today it’s a fantastic museum with some of the most famous pieces from the ancient world….including the remains of the Colossus statue of Constantine, the famed symbol of Rome: Romulus and Remus suckling the she-wolf, Marcus Aurelius riding a horse, a painting of Diogenes and Plato, Spinario as well as the dramatic Dying Gaul - all of which we go into below.

Head of Constantine

• Game: Scavenger hunt? Find the head, Foot, hand

• Can you guess how big this statue is?

  • Judging by the size of the remaining pieces, the seated, enthroned figure would have been about 12 meters (40 feet) high. The head is about 2¹⁄₂ meters tall and each foot is over 2 meters long. How many grown ups is that?

• Who was Constantine? 

  • a Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337 and the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity.

• Does anyone know the story of his conversion?

  • Maxentius' forces were still twice the size of Constantine's - Constantine shouldn’t have won!

  • Eusebius describes a vision that Constantine had while marching at midday in which "he saw with his own eyes the trophy of a cross of light in the heavens, above the sun, and bearing the inscription, In Hoc Signo Vinces ("In this sign thou shalt conquer")

  • When he won afterwards, he became Christian. NB: His mother was also Christian!

• First Emperor to make Christianity legal. He changed the history of the Western world and brought Christianity into prominence.

Romulus & Remus 

• A symbol of the city of Rome and the ancient Romans since at least the 3rd century BC. 

• Although the tale takes place before the founding of Rome around 750 BC...

• Who were these little boys? What happened to them?

  • Romulus and Remus were born in Alba Longa, one of the many ancient Latin cities near the Seven hills of Rome. Their mother Rhea Silvia was a Vestal Virgin and the daughter of former king Numitor, who had been displaced by his brother Amulius. And their father was Mars (Do you know which god is Mars? What is his Greek equivalent?)

  • Seeing them as a possible threat to his rule, King Amulius ordered them to be killed and they were abandoned on the bank of the river Tiber to die. They were saved by the god Tiberinus, Father of the River and the twins were suckled by a she-wolf in a cave now known as the Lupercal. Eventually, they were adopted by Faustulus, a shepherd. They grew up tending flocks, unaware of their true identities. Over time, they became natural leaders and attracted a company of supporters from the community.

  • They joined forces with their grandfather and took back the throne and then debated on which hill to found the city. 

  • So they used Augury -  "taking the auspices". "Auspices" (Latin auspicium) means "looking at birds". They counted how many birds they saw. Romulus saw the most, but Remus said he won. They got in a fight and Romulus won and named the city of Rome after himself.

Marcus Aurelius

• Who knows who this guy is? 

• Roman Emperor - 26 April 121 – 17 March 180) was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 and a Stoic philosopher. 

• Famously wrote the Meditations, which was actually just his journal, but what published later on.

• Does anyone know what Stoicism is?

  • An ancient Greek philosopher started by Zeno, who was a Phoenician. He had a bad shipwreck and lost everything, but learned about Philosophy when he came to Athens. He learned philosophy from a Cynic, but had ideas on how to improve it. He came up with Stoicism which is named after the Stoa where he and his students would talk. 

  • While Stoicism started in Ancient Greece, it became very popular in ancient Rome, with Epictetus (who was Greek) and Marcus Aurelius, the Roman Emperor. 

  • The philosophy teaches to live according to nature and to be virtuous. 

  • Stoicism also reminds us that there are things are out of your control and things are in your control

  • Game: In or out. Shout out if these things are IN your control or OUT of your control:

    • Weather

    • How much Homework you get

    • How much work you put into your homework

    • Sitting in Traffic

    • What songs you play while sitting in traffic

    • Paying attention at school

    • What your parent cooks for dinner

    • How you respond when someone says a mean comment

    • Your attitude when you go over to a friends house

    • What country you were born in

    • What others think about you

Moving from the Romans back to the Greeks, from statues to paintings, we continue on to a story about Diogenes and Plato:

Diogenes and Plato

• Plato vs Diogenes discuss what is a Man? This is a very funny story. But first, who are these two men?

  • Plato was a student of Socrates and founded the Academy in Athens. He believed in the existence of ideal forms and the importance of reason and knowledge.

  • Diogenes of Sinope, a leading figure of Cynicism, lived in a way that rejected societal norms and materialism, promoting a simple and self-sufficient lifestyle.

  • One day Plato was discussing what is a man in front of many of his students and he said that a man is a  “Featherless bi-ped”. Diogenes thought (rightly?) that this was a bit silly. So he went and got a chicken which he plucked and returned to Plato and his students. He threw down the plucked chicken and responded, “Behold! Plato’s Man!” 

  • It’s a fun reminder that the ancient philosophers didn’t always agree and that a man as brilliant as Plato wasn’t always right. While Diogenes is sometimes a little ‘out-there’, he does a good job of showing something as silly when it is silly.

From a man to a boy...

Spinario 

• Boy with Thorn, also called Fedele (Fedelino) or Spinario, is a Greco-Roman Hellenistic bronze sculpture of a boy withdrawing a thorn from the sole of his foot, now in the Palazzo dei Conservatori, Rome.

• The faithful messenger, a mere shepherd boy, had delivered his message to the Roman Senate first, only then stopping to remove a painful thorn from his foot: the Roman Senate commemorated the event.

• Discussion: Why do you think they made a statue of this moment?

• Discussion: The sculpture was one of the very few Roman bronzes that was never lost to sight. Why do you think that is? Which types of statues survived over time compared to others?

Last but not least, one of the greatest Hellenistic sculptures of all time: Dying Gaul

Dying Gaul

• Do you know what a Gaul is?  What is a celt?

  • Non Greeks were called Barbarians - but had very sophisticated cultures and art. The Greeks often thought it was strange they wore pants!

  • The warrior is represented with characteristic Celtic hairstyle and mustache with a Celtic torc around his neck.

• An ancient Roman marble copy of a now lost Greek sculpture from the Hellenistic period (323–31 BC) thought to have been made in bronze

• The original may have been commissioned at some time between 230 and 220 BC by Attalus I of Pergamon to celebrate his victory over the Galatians, the Celtic or Gaulish people of parts of Anatolia.

• The statue serves both as a reminder of the Celts' defeat, thus demonstrating the might of the people who defeated them, AND a memorial to their bravery as worthy adversaries. 

• It is a very important piece in the world of Art: Famous for its pathos, part of the grand tour. It shows the Hellenistic style (the time period of Alexander the Great) which had a lot of movement and emotion. Thomas Jefferson wanted it/copy and Napoleon took it to Paris (but it was returned to Rome).

• Game: Strike a Pose! Can you be one of the statues you see? Count 1,2,3 and copy one of the Statues.

Building “Lego” Blocks!

Did you know that every time you have a dialogue with a friend, listen to a monologue in the theater, or use logic to solve a problem, you are actually speaking a bit of Greek? 

All of these words come from the ancient Greek verb “λέγω,” which means 'to speak' or 'to say.’ Let’s see how the roots and seeds of λέγω open up a whole new world of meaning about communication, logic, and expression!

• Διάλογος (pron. dhiálogos, mean. dialogue): A dialogue is a conversation between two or more people. The Greek root “διά” (dhiá = through) combined with λέγω (légho) gives us the word “dialogue,” meaning to speak through ideas. Through dialogue, we communicate, exchange ideas, and learn from each other. 

• Λογική (pron. loghikí, mean. logic): Logic is the study of reasoning and principles of correct thinking. It comes from the Greek word “λογική” (loghikí), which means “the art of reasoning.” Λέγω gives us “λόγος” (logos), meaning “word” or “reason,” and forms the basis of logical thinking, where words and ideas are carefully connected to form valid conclusions. 

• Μονόλογος (pron. monóloghos, mean. monologue): It comes from “μόνος” (monos = alone) and λέγω, meaning a speech by one person. In plays, movies, or everyday conversation, a monologue is a way for someone to express their thoughts out loud, often as a way of explaining or reflecting on something important. 

• Κατάλογος (pron. katálogos, mean. catalogue): The word “catalogue” has its roots in λέγω too. It comes from “κατά” (katá = according to) and λέγω, meaning a list or enumeration of items, usually arranged in a logical order. A catalog helps us organize and present information in a way that is easy to follow. 

Words like dialogue, logic, monologue and so many more, show us how important λέγω is to the way we communicate and reason today. Speaking, thinking, and expressing  ideas are all connected to the ancient roots of the Greek language. Understanding them helps us see how essential words and speech are in shaping the world around us.

The ancient myth of Cadmus is a great one... filled with fantastic and fascinating characters, awesome heroes and monsters, and of course dragon teeth! 

We recently told this important founding legend, so now it’s time to review it the fun way... with games! Please check out some massively mythology games inspired by the story of Cadmus, who is known for founding the city of Thebes, his adventures with dragons and the invention of the alphabet. 

These games not only teach kids about Greek mythology but also promote teamwork, creativity, and active engagement.

1. Dragon's Treasure Hunt

After Cadmus killed the dragon, he took the dragon’s teeth and sowed them in the earth...and now it’s time for the kids to find them!  

Objective: Find hidden "dragon's teeth" (small stones or paper cutouts).

Setup: Before the game, hide the "dragon's teeth" around a designated area.

Gameplay: Kids can work in teams or individually to find as many teeth as they can within a set time. Each tooth can represent a point or be exchanged for small prizes.

Alternative version: When kids find a “dragon’s tooth” they have to ‘fight’ for it by answering a question from the teacher/parent. This represents the ‘Sparti’ or armed warriors that sprang up from the sown teeth and began fighting. This is a good time to ‘drill’ whatever they are learning, such as times tables, planets, spelling words, etc.

2. Alphabet Quest

Cadmus is often associated with the introduction of the Phoenician alphabet to the Greeks. According to legend, he brought the alphabet to Greece after his journey to find his sister Europa. While he didn't create the alphabet himself, his role in its introduction significantly influenced Greek writing and language development.

Objective: Create words using letters representing Cadmus' contribution to the alphabet.

Setup: Provide kids with letters (cutouts, magnetic letters, scrabble tiles).

Gameplay: Kids must race to create as many words as possible within a time limit. You could also turn this into a relay race where each child must run back with one letter at a time to build a word together.

3. Thebes Building Challenge

Cadmus is most famous for being the founder of Thebes, a great and important city in the ancient world. He, along with the five Sparti, built the citadel or tower, which can still be seen today. 

Objective: Recreate the city of Thebes using building materials.

Setup: Provide blocks, LEGO bricks, or recycled materials, such toilet paper rolls, boxes, paper, etc. 

Gameplay: Kids work in teams to build their interpretation of Thebes. They can present their creations and explain what parts of the myth they included, promoting creativity and storytelling.

4. Cadmus and the Dragon Race

Like many great heroes from mythology, the story begins with slaying a dragon. Let your kiddos be the hero/heroine by battling the beast and winning the day!

Objective: A relay race where participants pretend to battle a dragon.

Setup: Set up a relay course with obstacles representing challenges Cadmus faced.

Gameplay: Kids take turns racing through the course, completing tasks (like "defeating a dragon" by tossing a ball into a bucket) before tagging the next teammate. The first team to finish wins!

5. Mythical Charades

This is a good opportunity to read out the story and see what the youth(s) remember, so they can reenact the events. 

Objective: Act out different scenes from the myth of Cadmus without speaking.

Setup: Write various scenes or characters from the myth on slips of paper.

Gameplay: Kids take turns drawing a slip and acting it out while others guess what it is. This helps with understanding the story and encourages imagination.

Last week we looked at one of the building blocks of language itself:  "γράμμα" 

(If you missed it, you can catch up on it here)

In ancient Greek, "γράμμα" originally referred to a letter or a written character, meaning both the individual letters of the alphabet as well as the concept of writing!

That’s a lot for one little word to do... 

We already saw “γράμμα” in grammar, program, diagram and telegraph, but actually there are more! Check out extra ways ancient Greek has influenced our language, along with questions, discussions, activities and worksheets below… including, Anagrams! 

Other Words:  

• Epigram: A short, clever poem or saying (ἐπί = upon + γράμμα). 

• Cryptogram: A secret or coded message (κρυπτός = hidden + γράμμα). 

• Anagram: A word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of another (ἀνά =  back + γράμμα). 

Questions:  

1. What does the Greek word γράμμα mean? 

2. How does "γράμμα" connect to modern words like grammar and diagram? 3. Can you think of other words that come from γράμμα? 

4. Can you write an Epigram? 

Activities:  

1. Create a Secret Cryptogram! – Write a secret message using a cryptogram and challenge a friend to decode it.

2. Design a Diagram! – Draw a diagram that explains something you love, like a favorite hobby or game. Try labeling it using neat and clear letters! 

Let’s say you love playing soccer. You could draw a diagram of a soccer field to explain how the game works. Your diagram might include: 

• The goalposts 

• The penalty area 

• The center circle 

• Player positions, like goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders, and forwards. You can then label each part of the diagram neatly with clear letters to make it easy to understand. For example: 

• Label the goal as "Goal" 

• Label the center circle as "Center Circle" 

• Use arrows to show how players move on the field 

By combining creativity with learning how to use diagrams, we explain something in a visual, easy-to-understand way. In modern problem-solving and innovation, we do the same with design thinking, where diagrams and visual aids help us map out ideas, find  solutions, and communicate complex concepts clearly.

After exploring how the word γράφω has shaped modern words like photography, autograph, and graphic design, let’s see another powerful Ancient Greek word: "γράμμα" (grámma). 

It is the Greek word for letter and just like γράφω, it has given rise to many of the words we use every day. 

Grammar: The Rules of Language  

One of the most important - and obvious - words that comes from γράμμα is “grammar”. Grammar is the set of rules that helps us form sentences and communicate clearly. 

Diagram: Designing Thoughts  

The word diagram incorporates the words γράμμα. A diagram is a simple drawing or chart that helps explain something, often using lines and shapes. The Greek word "διά" (dia) means “through.” So a diagram is literally “a drawing or writing that shows clearly what you have in mind.” 

Telegram: Writing from a Distance  

Just like in the word “telegraph” (which we saw in our "γράφω" article), "telegram" uses the root "γράμμα" to mean “a message written or sent from afar.” The ancient Greeks combined "τῆλε" (tele = far) and γράμμα giving us a word for communicating across long distances.

Program: A List of Things to Be Done  

The word program also has its roots in γράμμα. A program is a list or plan of things that will happen or need to be done, and the word comes from the Greek “πρό” (pro = before) and “γράμμα.” So the full meaning is something written ahead of time. 

Learning about the etymology of words shows us how important the building blocks of language are. Just like letters (or γράμματα) are essential to writing, understanding how these ancient words form our everyday vocabulary helps us better understand the world around us. 

Whether it's through grammar, programs, or diagrams, the influence of "γράμμα" is everywhere!

Today we will learn about one of the greatest ancient “Greek” heroes of all time.... Except, he wasn’t Greek! Nonetheless, he is absolutely critical to Greek mythology and may actually represent how the ancient Greeks accepted and incorporated Eastern traditions... 

But before you learn about this important dragon-slaying, city-building ‘barbarian’, a quick note and thank you to our Classical KIDS who joined yesterday’s discussion on the Homeric Hymn to Demeter!

Cadmus: the Non-Greek Hero of Greece

There are many heroes from Greek mythology like Achilles, Odysseus and Jason. Yet among these, there is a figure that is especially remarkable: Cadmus, the legendary founder of Thebes. 

What makes Cadmus special is that he was a foreigner, or in Greek terms, a barbarian. Yet he is still considered by the Greeks as one of the greatest heroes before Heracles!

The Early Adventures of Cadmus

Cadmus was born in Phoenicia, and was the son of King Agenor, yet his real father may have been Zeus. His sister was the beautiful Europa, from whom we have the name Europe, and she was stolen away by Zeus. Cadmus was sent to find her and bring her home, but he had no success. So he visited the Oracle of Delphi for some help in his search. 

He was told to stop his search, and instead focus on founding a city. The Oracle ordered him to follow a cow with unusual markings. Where she lay down, he was to find a city.

He followed the cow to Boeotia (land of cows), and she eventually lay down. Then he laid the foundation for the city of Thebes, one of the greatest cities in the Classical world.

During the construction of Thebes, the first people were threatened by a dragon from a nearby spring. Cadmus, like any hero, killed the dragon.

In Greek mythology, the teeth of dragons had special powers when they were sown in the ground. Cadmus sowed the earth with the slain dragons’ teeth, and from these grew armed warriors, who were called Sparti (or ‘the sown’ in Greek).

The warriors immediately started being violent, and killed each other until only five were left. These five were enlisted by Cadmus and helped him to build a citadel in Thebes. The descendants of the five Sparti became the leading families of Thebes.

The Later Adventures of Cadmus

Yet all was not well. Cadmus had offended the god of war, Ares. The slain dragon was sacred to the god.  As such, the hero had to serve Ares for eight years. After the eight years were finished, Ares gave his daughter Harmonia to Cadmus as his bride. Their wedding was attended by many of the gods. The couple had a son and four daughters, the last of which was Semele (who would become the mother of Dionysus, the god of wine).

Time to Write

Do you remember our newest word, “γράφω”(gráphō)? It means "to write" or "to draw" and it has a rich history that stretches back to the early periods of Greek civilization.

In fact, the verb "γράφω" comes from Proto-Indo-European roots related to writing or scratching! In ancient Greek, it was used in various contexts including writing letters, inscriptions, and drawing images. Its usage can be seen in numerous classical texts, indicating its importance in Greek culture.

Today, we can find it in so many words, like photograph, autography and calligraphy... we went over some of the ways it was used last week, but will go into even more this week - plus fun activities and discussions below!

The legacy of "γράφω" can be seen in modern Greek, where it still means "to write." It has also influenced words in other languages, particularly in terms related to writing and inscriptions, such as "graph," "graphic," and "autograph."

Let’s check out more common words we use in English that contain "γράφω".

Biography: The written account of someone’s life. It combines "bio-" (life) with "graph" (writing).

Telegraph: Combining "tele-" (distant) with "graph," it refers to writing or recording messages over long distances.

Seismograph: A device that writes or records seismic activity. "Seismo-" comes from Greek for "earthquake," and "graph" refers to recording.

Cartography: The art and science of map-making, from "carto-" (map) and "graph" (writing).

“Hey, I Want an Autograph! Can We Take a Photo?” We say these phrases often, when we meet someone famous or capture a special moment with friends. But have you ever thought about where the words autograph and photo come from? They are not just any words, they actually have a deep history!

Both of these words - and many more - come from the Greek word “γράφω” (grá-fo), which means I write. From graphic design to calligraphy, this ancient root has shaped so much of the language we use every day, that it’s worth exploring its roots which go all the way back in the ancient Greek world! 

Graphic Design: Writing Without Words  

Obviously, “graphic” comes from “γράφω”, sounds like it, right? In modern times,  graphic design uses pictures to tell stories instead of words, just like how ancient  writing communicated big ideas through symbols.

“Photography” literally means writing with light! It combines the Greek words “photo” (φῶς = light) and “γράφω”. 

Calligraphy: Artful Writing  

Calligraphy, or beautiful writing, combines “callos” (κάλλος = beauty) and “γράφω”. In  ancient times, people made their writing look as stunning as artwork, and today, we still love using calligraphy to make special letters and invitations. 

Autograph: Your Personal Writing  

When you sign your name, you are giving an autograph, which means “self-writing” (αὐτός = self).

While the study of the classics is rewarding in and of itself, it’s always more fun to do with a friend. Who wouldn’t want to discuss myths and history and ideas with a buddy? Even better if the friend is also interested in the same topics! 

That’s why we are starting our Classical Kids Convos, so fellow classical loving kids can get together.

It’s a story that has it all - the goddess Demeter, her beautiful daughter Persephone, the king of the underworld Hades, and his brother the king of Gods Zeus. Oh, and Helios the sun god plays an important role... as do the humans! 

Not only that, it’s an origin story, both in that it explains the natural phenomenon of the seasons as well as the beginning of a long-standing ritual in the ancient world. As you can imagine, it’s a pretty important myth! But also really interesting.

This conversation will be aimed for kids 6 - 12 and will begin with a kid-friendly retelling of the story of Demeter and her daughter Persephone. Afterwards I’ll lead a discussion about how these stories were told and what they meant in the ancient world. Best of all, we’ll let the kids talk about it with each other.
