Bruce Lindahl, January 29 [Aquarius], was an American serial killer and rapist who committed a series of rapes and murders in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

In 2020, Lindahl was connected to the death of 16-year-old Pamela A. Maurer [Scorpio], who was killed on January 13, 1976, in DuPage County, Illinois.

Bruce Lindahl was born in St. Charles, Illinois, to Jerome Conrad Lindahl and Arlene Marie Folkens Haddock.

The next few years, he worked as an electrician, while studying additionally at the Midvalley Vocational Center in Kaneville.

In his free time, Lindahl was fond of parachuting and racquetball, with his friends and acquaintances speaking extremely positively of him, despite the fact that he easily fell into states of irresistible impulses and occasionally showed aggressive behavior towards others.

In December 1976, he was arrested for possession of marijuana, but did not appear to be intoxicated.

From 1974 onward, Lindahl committed many minor offenses and was repeatedly arrested, but each time, the court gave him only fines.

During this time period, he changed residences on several occasions.

On March 6, 1979, on the pretext of selling marijuana, Lindahl lured 20-year-old Annette Lazar into his Aurora home, where he raped her under the threat of a gun.

He later released her after she gave him feigned consent to continue further intimate relationships, after which Lazar contacted the police.

However, since she had left him her phone number and the house where she was raped belonged to police officer Dave Torres, who was a friend of Lindahl, her testimony was reportedly discounted and Lindahl was not charged.

On December 22, 1980, Lindahl attacked a 30-year-old woman in northern Aurora, after she refused to provide him with sexual services in exchange for money.

Since there were several witnesses, Lindahl hurried to leave the scene without causing serious harm to the victim.

The injured woman contacted police, and during the interrogation was presented with photographs of various criminals for visual identification.

As Lindahl was not among them, the victim instead picked out another man with a similar appearance.

On January 28, 1981, Lindahl was convicted of illegally tapping and recording other people’s phone calls to extort them.

While they were trying to detain him, he aimed a shotgun at a police officer.

After his arrest, he was charged with resisting arrest, illegal possession of weapons, and assault, but was again released on bail, and remained free during the preliminary investigation.

On an unspecified date, Lindahl was driving when he was pulled over by the police.

The police discovered an unconscious woman bleeding from a deep gash in her head.

They asked him what he was doing, and he claimed that he was taking her to the hospital, although he was going in the wrong direction.

An ambulance took the woman to the hospital, where an examination revealed she had been sexually assaulted.

The woman stated that she did not remember what happened after Lindahl gave her a sip of something at a party.

No charges were filed.

On January 12, 1976, the body of 16-year-old Pamela A. Maurer was found behind a guardrail; she had been raped and strangled.

Maurer was a junior at Downers Grove South High School who had gone to a friend’s house in Lisle, Illinois on the night of January 12, 1976.

At 9:45 p.m., Pamela went out to buy a soda at a nearby McDonald’s but she never returned.

In 2019, his body was exhumed and his DNA was obtained.

On April 24, 1979, the body of 19-year-old Kathy Halle was discovered in the Fox River near North Aurora after she had been missing for almost a month.

In October 2024, police used new DNA techniques to link Lindahl to the murder and concluded that he was responsible for the death of Halle.

While inspecting his apartment, several photographs of young girls were located by authorities, including one that is believed to be that of 16-year-old Deborah A. “Debbie” McCall.

Deborah was last seen in Downers Grove, Illinois on November 5, 1979.

She left Downers Grove North High School that day and has never been heard from again.

Investigators believe that Lindahl was involved in her disappearance.

On June 23, 1980, Lindahl abducted 25-year-old Debra Elizabeth Colliander from the parking lot of a shopping center in Aurora, Illinois.

He took her to his apartment, where he raped Colliander before she escaped after he fell asleep.

She notified police, and this time, he was arrested and charged.

However, Lindahl paid his bail and was released.

On October 7, 1980, Debra Elizabeth Colliander went missing after leaving work, and the trial, which was supposed to take place in 1981, was canceled, due to the absence of the key witness.

Subsequently, all charges were dropped.

In 1982 [I was 7 years old], the decomposing body of Debra Elizabeth Colliander was located in an Oswego cornfield.

Soon after, a man contacted the Aurora police, claiming that Lindahl had offered him a monetary reward in exchange for killing Debra Elizabeth Colliander to prevent her from testifying at trial, which led investigators to place Lindahl as the prime suspect, as he had a clear motive to commit the murder.

On April 4, 1981, while cruising around in one of the shopping and entertainment districts of Naperville, Lindahl met 18-year-old Charles Robert “Chuck” Huber Jr.

After playing some ten-pin bowling together, Lindahl suggested that they to go to Lindahl’s ex-girlfriend’s apartment, to which Huber agreed.

That same evening, when they arrived in the apartment, Lindahl attacked Huber with a knife, fatally stabbing him a total of 28 times.

During the attack, however, Huber resisted, causing Lindahl to accidentally stab himself in the thigh, severing his own femoral artery.

This resulted in heavy bleeding from which Lindahl died, collapsing over his victim.

Ridings was the reporter for the Aurora Beacon-News whose articles exposed Lindahl for the first time in 1980.

Aurora police said Lindahl planned to kill Ridings once the court charges were dropped but Lindahl accidentally killed himself while murdering Charles Robert “Chuck” Huber Jr., four days after the charges were dismissed.

Frank Davis, born January 29 [Aquarius], 1953, was an American serial killer who raped and murdered three teenage boys in Indiana between 1971 and 1983.

While at a juvenile detention center, Davis was sexually abused by one of the attendants and at least one other inmate.

The courts later said the attack that Davis suffered from the fellow inmate was similar to how he assaulted one of his victims.

On January 10, 1983, Davis confronted a 15-year-old boy at gunpoint, wrapped a wire around his neck, then forced him to perform oral sex.

The boy would recover from the attack and identify Davis.

On June 16, 1983, Davis confronted 14-year-old Darrin M. Reed at knifepoint after the two shared a beer.

Davis wrapped a wire around Reed’s neck, performed oral sex on him, and then strangled him to death.

On June 18, 1983, two 15-year-old boys, including one named James Harley, were camping when they saw Davis in the woods.

Davis was smoking marijuana and shared it with the teenagers.

Afterwards, he waited for them to go to sleep.

Davis then went into their tent, woke up Jeff Lopez, and moved him into the woods at knifepoint.

He restrained the boy with wire, performed oral sex on him, and then strangled him to death with the wire.

He then returned to the other boy, tied him up with wire, and performed oral sex on him, before striking him in the head with the axe and leaving.

The victim survived.

Davis’s two surviving victims identified him, and he gave a full confession.

He also confessed to the murder of 13-year-old Duane Francis Bush on June 3, 1971.

Davis was charged with two counts of murder for killing Reed and Lopez and two counts of attempted murder for the assaults on the surviving victims.

On December 8, 1993, his sentences for the murder convictions were reduced to 60 years each.

Three years prior, 86-year-old civil rights activist, Mary Church Terrell, began a lawsuit against Thompson’s Restaurant, located a few blocks from the White House, which had denied service to her and several colleagues because they were Black.

Terrell invoked a set of laws outlawing racial discrimination in restaurants and other places of public accommodation that had been passed during the Reconstruction era following the Civil War by Washington D.C.’s newly elected biracial city government.

Congress abolished the city’s locally elected biracial government and replaced it with a federally appointed commission.

After Mississippi senator Theodore Bilbo in 1944 became chairman of the congressional committee responsible for overseeing the district, he told an audience, “I wanted this position so I could keep Washington a segregated city.”

As of 2018, he was a professor of physiology and biochemistry at Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica.

Meisenberg attended and helped organize the London Conference on Intelligence, and was one of 15 attendees to collaborate on a letter defending the conference following media reports of its ties to white supremacy, neo-Nazism, and racist pseudoscience.

Meisenberg has proposed a model of economic development in nations that attempts to predict future development based on historical trends in intelligence, education and economic growth.

Robert Jay Mathews, born January 16 [Capricorn], 1953, was an American neo-Nazi and the leader of The Order, an AmeriKKKan white supremacist militant group that committed counterfeiting, several bank robberies, car heists, murders, and assassinations.

Mathews is believed to have served as a lookout in the murder of Alan Berg.

Before founding The Order, Mathews was a member of the neo-Nazi groups the National Alliance and Aryan Nations.

He was burned alive during a shootout with approximately 75 federal law enforcement agents who surrounded his house on Whidbey Island, near Freeland, Washington.

Following his death, other white supremacists viewed him as a martyr and memorialized him.

Robert Jay Mathews was born in Marfa, Texas to Johnny and Una Mathews.

His family was lower middle class.

His father Johnny Mathews was of Scottish descent.

He was the mayor of Marfa, the President of the Chamber of Commerce, and a businessman and leader for the local Methodist church; he fought during World War II.

Una and Johnny Mathews were married by a Presbyterian Church in April 1943, in Detroit.

The couple had three sons, all spaced four years apart: Grant, Lee, and then Robert Mathews.

His family moved often in his youth, seeking business opportunities.

The family eventually settled in Phoenix, Arizona.

When Mathews was six years old, his older brother Grant was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and repeatedly attempted suicide.

This resulted in Mathews’s parents having to spend more time devoted to him than their other children, and some amount of neglect towards Lee and Robert, for which they felt guilt.

Robert became closer with Lee as a result.

Mathews received average grades in most fields of study, but excelled in topics he was interested in, especially history and the American Civil War.

In October 1964, at age 11, to the surprise of his parents, he declared that he would join the John Birch Society, a right-wing advocacy group.

Many students at his school were Mormons, and Mathews, admiring their lifestyle, decided to be baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1969.

When he was 17, he attended a tax resistance protest, to the chagrin of his parents, who were beginning to worry about him and his increasingly revolutionary, anti-government ideas.

He got into a debate with his economics teacher about Keynesian economics, which he believed was socialist, and afterwards stopped attending the class entirely.

He declared he would not go to college as colleges were “hotbeds of communism.”

He instead desired to attend the United States Military Academy, but changed his mind after the My Lai massacre.

When the perpetrators were punished for “following orders,” he decided that he no longer wanted to be part of the United States Army.

His father forced him to take the test, whereupon Mathews failed due to his score on math; he may have failed on purpose.

He was not allowed to graduate high school due to his refusal to take the economics course.

Mathews co-founded the Sons of Liberty in 1971, an anti-communist militia whose members were mainly Mormon survivalists.

They engaged in sometimes violent activism, holding a TV station hostage in 1972 to get more publicity for the group.

At this time he worked odd jobs in the Phoenix area.

In 1973, after filling out his employer’s W-4 Form claiming ten dependents, reportedly as an act of tax resistance, he was arrested for tax fraud, tried, and placed on probation for six months.

Mathews became disillusioned by the lack of support he had received by other right-wing activists after his conviction.

When his probation ended, Mathews moved in July 1974 to Metaline Falls, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest, because he liked the countryside.

He promised his parents that he would cease political extremist activity so they would move north with him.

He married Debbie McGarity, with whom he adopted a son.

At the same time he worked in a mine and then successively a cement plant; he attempted to make a living off the ranch he lived on, but was unsuccessful.

Despite his promise to cease engaging in far-right activism, while in Metaline Falls, Mathews became a white supremacist.

He joined William Luther Pierce‘s National Alliance in 1980, which he saw as more intellectual than the other white supremacist groups, and began distributing National Alliance literature to make money.

Mathews became fascinated by Pierce’s 1978 novel The Turner Diaries, which reinforced his anti-government ideas.

He became an associate of Richard Girnt Butler, Christian Identity preacher and the leader of Aryan Nations, and adopted many of his ideas.

His political ideology was influenced by his reading William Gayley Simpson‘s Which Way Western Man? and Oswald Spengler‘s The Decline of the West.

Mathews came to see Butler as unwilling to act on his word, as not being a man of action.

In 1982 Mathews formed the White American Bastion, a splinter group of Aryan Nations, in an effort to recruit white families to the Pacific Northwest.

In 1983, Mathews delivered a speech, “A Call to Arms,” at a National Alliance convention reporting on his efforts to recruit on behalf of the organization, especially among “the yeoman farmers and independent truckers,” to his white American Bastion group.

This speech was widely publicized among the racist movement.

That year, his father died, and Mathews became more engrossed in white supremacist politics.

He largely abandoned Christianity for Odinism, though most of his followers were from Christian Identity origins.

In late September 1983, at a barracks he constructed on his property in Metaline, Mathews and eight other men founded the militant neo-Nazi organization The Order, also known as the Silent Brotherhood.

The mission of The Order was to obtain enough resources to eventually overthrow the American “Zionist Occupation Government.”

The Order was based directly on and named after a group from The Turner Diaries.

The group’s first task, according to Mathews’s plan, was to obtain money to support white separatism and to finance a guerrilla campaign against the American government.

They robbed an adult bookstore in Spokane, Washington, which netted them $369.10.

They agreed that was too risky and turned to robbing armored cars and counterfeiting.

They printed some counterfeit $50 bills, and 28-year-old Bruce Pierce was arrested after passing off a few of them.

To raise Pierce’s bail, Mathews, acting alone, robbed a bank just north of Seattle, Washington, stealing around $26,000.

Some of The Order’s members, along with a new recruit, Gary Yarbrough, carried out more robberies and burglaries, which netted them over $43,000.

A subsequent robbery yielded several hundred thousand dollars.

Another recruit, Tom Martinez, was caught and charged for passing more counterfeit currency.

Then in July 1984, they deployed approximately a dozen men in a successful effort to rob a Brink’s truck of $3,600,000.

On October 2, 1984, he had a daughter born out of wedlock.

The group distributed some of the stolen money to the North Carolina–based White Patriot Party and other white nationalist organizations.

The group also committed acts of murder and assassination.

Mathews and the other members of The Order were eventually betrayed by Martinez, who became an FBI informant after his arrest for counterfeiting.

After he revealed information regarding Mathews’s activities to the FBI, agents moved to capture Mathews and his associates, leading to one of the largest manhunts in FBI history.

In the days leading up to his death, Mathews wrote a long letter declaring war on the federal government of the United States and justifying his group’s actions.

In it, he describes threats allegedly made to members of his family by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents, including to his young son while he was away from his house, as well as a number of attempts on his life by other government agents.

He explained the reasons for his decision to “quit being the hunted and become the hunter,” and closed by writing, “I am not going into hiding, rather I will press the FBI and let them know what it is like to become the hunted. Doing so it is only logical to assume that my days on this planet are rapidly drawing to a close. Even so, I have no fear. For the reality of my life is death, and the worst the enemy can do to me is shorten my tour of duty in this world. I will leave knowing that I have made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the future of my children.”

By the time they could set up the operation, all of Mathews’s accomplices and friends had decided to move to safe houses.

The FBI then fired dozens of smoke grenades into the house in an attempt to force Mathews out, but did not know he possessed a gas mask, which thwarted this effort.

Mathews opened fire on several agents who attempted to enter the house, and a long standoff began.

When a helicopter appeared at nightfall, Mathews opened fire on it from an upstairs window — the helicopter’s crew was unhurt — and then once again exchanged gunfire with federal agents.

An FBI agent then fired three M79 Starburst flares inside the house from the helicopter, setting off a box of hand grenades and a stockpile of ammunition.

Mathews continued to fire an assault rifle at agents as the house burned, but then suddenly stopped.

After the wreckage had cooled enough to be searched, agents found the burned remains of Mathews’s body, with a pistol still in his hand.

Eventually, dozens were convicted of crimes connected to The Order, on charges that included racketeering, conspiracy, counterfeiting, transporting stolen money, armored car robbery, and violation of civil rights.

Sentences of up to 252 years were imposed.

Later, ten people connected to the case, including Richard Girnt Butler, David Lane, and Pierce, were tried for sedition, but were acquitted by a jury.

Joseph was a member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army.

Dean spent the rest of the summer at Wilson’s house living in the guesthouse in exchange for taking care of the landscaping.

He became a devout follower of Manson and spent a brief amount of time with the Manson Family at Spahn Ranch after they began living there in the summer of 1968.

While living at Spahn Ranch, Moorehouse was responsible for taking care of the children, dumpster diving, and panhandling.

She acquired her nickname “Ouisch” from George Spahn, although there are different theories as to what the nickname meant.

One theory is that it was because of the sound that her pants made when she walked by, another is because it was the whistling sound men made when she walked past them.

In April 1969, George Spahn agreed to act as Moorehouse’s foster parent after she was arrested and placed in juvenile hall.

Months later at the Myers Ranch in Death Valley, Susan Atkins told Moorehouse about the murders of coffee heiress Abigail Folger and pregnant actress Sharon Tate.

Moorehouse later told Barbara Hoyt that she knew of ten more murders other than Tate.

Using the names Amy Riley and Jill Morgan, Hoyt and Moorehouse flew to Honolulu.

On September 9, 1970, Moorehouse told Hoyt that she had to go back to California, but that Hoyt was to stay behind in Hawaii.

While at the airport, Hoyt ordered a hamburger.

According to Hoyt, when it arrived, Moorehouse took it and went outside, while Hoyt paid for it.

When she came out, Moorehouse gave her the hamburger, and Hoyt ate it while they were waiting for Moorehouse’s flight.

Just before she was to board, Hoyt said that Moorehouse remarked, ‘Imagine what it would be like if that hamburger had ten tabs of acid in it.’

After Moorehouse left, according to Hoyt, she:

….then went into the city. All of a sudden I was feeling really weird, very high, and I realized there were ten tabs of acid in the hamburger. I got to a bathroom and made myself throw up. I don’t know how I did it, but I got to the steps of the Salvation Army building… A man asked me, ‘Are you all right?’ I said no. I told him to call Mr. Bugliosi. They took me to a hospital and gave me Valium by IV to bring me down…. That’s when I lost consciousness. Even though they tried to kill me, I had to testify. I’d seen Sharon Tate’s mother on TV talking about her grief. That’s what swayed me… What it finally came down to for me was this: Did I want to be able to live with myself when I got old? I decided that I did.

On December 18, 1970, Moorehouse, Rice, Grogan, Fromme, and Catherine Share were charged with attempted murder of Hoyt.

On February 26, 1971, a heavily pregnant Moorehouse appeared on the witness stand during the Tate-LaBianca murder trial, where Vincent Bugliosi cross-examined her.

She was also questioned by Manson’s attorney, Irving Kanarek, and said that Manson was at a waterfall several miles from the Spahn Ranch on the night of the Tate murders.

On March 23, 1971, Moorehouse, Share, Fromme, Grogan, and Rice were allowed to plead no contest to the lesser charge of conspiracy to dissuade a witness, and the murder counts were dropped.

The following month, Share, Fromme, Grogan, and Rice were sentenced to 90 days in jail for conspiracy to dissuade a witness; Moorehouse did not appear at the sentencing hearing and fled the state to go live with her sister in Carson City, Nevada.

Edward Delon Warren was an American serial killer and criminal.

A robber and burglar, Warren was convicted for the 1979 double murder of a couple in Brookings, Oregon and sentenced to death.

The sentence was later commuted to two life imprisonment terms, which he served until his death in 2003.

At his February 1980 trial for the Hemphill-Toma murders, Warren claimed that a profane remark from Hemphill resulted in his shooting.

Susan Robeson is a biracial American author and producer.

Her great-grandfather, William Drew Robeson I, was an escaped slave who became a minister and married a Quaker schoolteacher, Maria Louisa Bustill, making Robeson a descendant of the Bustill family.

She is the granddaughter of singer, actor and activist Paul Robeson Sr. and anthropologist and author Eslanda Goode Robeson.

Robison is the daughter of author Paul Robeson Jr. and Marilyn Paula Greenberg, who were married in New York City in 1949 with a mob outside protesting their interracial union.

Robeson studied at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio as well as at New York University.

Classes in communications, history and culture were primary areas of focus.

Darryl Pinckney is an American novelist, playwright, and essayist.

Pinckney grew up in a middle-class African American family in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he attended local public schools.

He was educated at Columbia University in New York City.

Some of Pinckney’s first professional works were theatre texts, plays developed in collaboration with director Robert Wilson.

These included the produced works of The Forest (1988) and Orlando (1989). Pinckney returned to theatre with Time Rocker (1995).

His first book was High Cotton (1992), a semi-autobiographical novel about “growing up Black and bourgeois” in 1960s America.

His second novel was Black Deutschland (2016), about a young gay Black man in Berlin, Germany, in the late 1980s, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Pinckney has published several collections of essays covering topics such as African American literature, politics, race, and other cultural issues.

He is also a frequent contributor to the New York Review of Books, Granta, Slate, and The Nation.

Diane O’Dell is an American serial killer who was convicted of murdering three of her 12 children.

She was also investigated for the disappearance of another one of her children.

O’Dell regularly traveled with the corpses.

The bodies of the three dead newborns were found in May 2003 in a storage shed O’Dell rented and abandoned in Safford, Arizona.

John Johnson was a Black American photographer.

His photographs are considered among the few documents of the early 20th-century African American community in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Johnson was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1879, to Harriet and Margaret Johnson.

His parents had self-emancipated, and his father was an American Civil War veteran.

John Johnson graduated from Lincoln High in 1899 and studied at the University of Nebraska.

He played football for the school, but never graduated.

Afterward, he worked as a janitor and a drayman before beginning his photography career.

Johnson married Odessa Prince in 1919; the couple had no children, and Johnson died in 1953.

Johnson’s began taking photographs in 1910 and ended around 1926.

He took over 500 photographs.

He photographed in cities other than Lincoln, including Kansas City, Missouri and Omaha, Nebraska.

His black and white photographs were noted for their high contrast and natural lighting.

His family portraits often showed subjects in their homes, on their porches, or outside their house.

He also made many glass plate negatives of buildings and parades.

Johnson did not show African American people as poor or inferior.

He typically portrayed families as well-educated and proud, by photographing them as well-dressed and posed confidently.

Johnson’s photos fit into a midwestern version of the Harlem Renaissance.

By portraying dignified African Americans, Johnson encouraged their confidence and self-expression.

Johnson’s work is one of the earliest contributions to the movement.

Johnson’s work was largely forgotten until historians found some of Johnson’s glass negatives in 1999.

After reading an article about the negatives, Douglas Keister connected them to a collection of negatives he bought at a garage sale.

Originally, historians thought the photographs were taken by Earl McWilliams, an assistant at a photography studio in Lincoln.

However, after talking to an elderly woman in Lincoln, they determined the photographer to be Johnson.

Vanessa Northington Gamble is an American physician, professor, and activist best known for her work as chair of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study Legacy Committee in 1996.

She is currently the University Professor of Medical Humanities at George Washington University.

Born in West Philadelphia, Gamble was primarily raised by her maternal grandmother.

She attended Philadelphia High School for Girls and graduated in 1970, then studied medical sociology and biology at Hampshire College, graduating with her bachelor’s degree in 1974.

Gamble then attended medical school and graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania, earning her M.D. in 1983 and her Ph.D. in the history and sociology of science in 1987.
