In the first post I described how classic science fiction lit the spark. In the second post I outlined the high-level Bootstrap Strategy. In the third post I detailed my supplement stack.

This post covers the other half of the equation: the prescription medications that have literally kept me alive long enough to pursue radical life extension.

This is not medical advice. These are my personal medications, prescribed and monitored by my doctors. What works for me may not work for you. Always work closely with your own physician.

My Current Prescription Medication Stack (2026)

Atorvastatin 40 mg once daily
I was diagnosed with familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) at age 30 with total cholesterol over 450. In the pre-statin era this was a death sentence for many men in their 30s or early 40s. After years of nasty older treatments, statins were a miracle. Atorvastatin keeps my lipids excellent: Total ~174, Triglycerides 52, HDL 90, LDL ~74. Without it, I would almost certainly have died of heart disease decades ago.

Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg (morning) + Lisinopril 10 mg (evening) + Terazosin 5 mg (bedtime)
These control my chronic high blood pressure. Combined with Tamsulosin (below), they keep my BP well managed.

Metformin 500 mg twice daily
Prescribed when my A1C showed pre-Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. I had actually been hoping for this prescription because of its growing reputation in longevity circles as an anti-senescence and AMPK-activating compound. It helps with blood sugar control, insulin sensitivity, and has promising data on healthspan.

Valacyclovir 1000 mg once daily
Daily antiviral to suppress herpes outbreaks (cold sores/genital). Chronic herpes viruses contribute to inflammation and immune burden with age.

Tamsulosin 0.4 mg (morning)
For benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Makes life much more comfortable.

Potassium Chloride 20 mEq ER daily (morning)
To offset potassium loss from hydrochlorothiazide.

Trelegy Ellipta inhaler once daily (morning) + Albuterol as needed
Manages my COPD, the legacy of smoking three packs a day for forty years (quit cold turkey May 30, 2001). My lungs are stable, and I can still do 15–20 mile bike rides and my full exercise routine.

Adderall 22.5 mg once daily (morning)
Helps with focus and energy. Useful at my age for maintaining cognitive performance and managing my ADHD.

Foundayo 9 mg oral daily
Current maintenance after significant weight loss on Mounjaro/Zepbound. (See my earlier post: Descending Mount Mounjaro). I went from 245 lbs down to 140–155 lbs range. This daily oral makes maintenance far easier.

Melatonin 10 mg (evening, 2 hours before bed)
Supports sleep quality, which is foundational for recovery and cognitive health. Also has mild antioxidant and potential longevity properties.

The Big Picture

I smoked heavily for forty years, had genetically terrible cholesterol, developed metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, COPD, and more. Absent modern pharmaceuticals — especially statins, blood pressure meds, GLP-1 drugs like Foundayo, and COPD treatments — I would very likely be dead.

Instead, at 80 I’m physiologically closer to 60, maintain excellent lab numbers, and continue pursuing the Bootstrap Strategy with energy. Big Pharma didn’t just save my life — it bought me the decades I needed to reach the point where real life extension technologies are now accelerating toward us.

Science isn’t marching. It’s sprinting. And I intend to stay on the track long enough for it to cross the finish line into radical life extension — the moment when my ability to grow physiologically younger finally exceeds my rate of aging.

I Could Use a Coffee

In the first post I explained how SF writers like Heinlein and Zelazny, and a handful of 1950s–60s science fiction novels turned a 12-year-old Midwest kid into someone determined to live as long as possible. In the second post I laid out the high-level Bootstrap Strategy: stay in the best physical and mental shape I can, without becoming a zealot, so I can take maximum advantage of every advance that comes along.

Now it’s time to get concrete. This post covers the nutritional side of my daily regimen — the vitamins, minerals, and targeted longevity compounds I actually take.

None of this turns life into a sterile lab experiment. I still enjoy food, friends, and books. The supplements are tools, not the whole strategy. Use it how you will. If nothing else, it might give you some new ideas to check out further, and even spark a few of your own.

Lithium Orotate 260 mg (morning)
Low-dose lithium orotate has become one of the more interesting compounds in my stack for brain health. A major 2025 Nature study found that lithium levels are significantly reduced in the brains of people with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s. In the first essay I described the spark: a twelve- or thirteen-year-old Midwest kid reading Robert A. Heinlein’s Methuselah’s Children and deciding he was going to live as long as humanly (or post-humanly) possible. That decision wasn’t a vague daydream. It became a governing strategy I’ve called The Bootstrap Strategy for nearly fifty years.

The core idea is simple: Keep yourself in the best possible physical and mental condition—without turning into an obsessive zealot—so you can take full advantage of every credible scientific and medical advance that comes along. The goal was never to discover the Fountain of Youth in one dramatic breakthrough. It was to stay healthy enough, long enough, that advances in longevity would start extending my remaining life faster than I was using it up.

I never expected overnight immortality. I just wanted to stay in the game.

The Logic of Bootstrapping

Think of it like pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps, except the “bootstraps” are incremental gains in healthspan that buy you time for the next wave of technology. Stay fit, manage inflammation, support cognition, avoid stupid risks—and position yourself to ride the accelerating curve of biotechnology, genomics, regenerative medicine, and (eventually) AI-driven breakthroughs.

This wasn’t a formal plan written on a napkin in 1975. It evolved from the same Heinleinian competence ethos that shaped the rest of my life. Specialization is for insects. I refused to specialize in decline. Instead, I treated my body and mind as systems I could monitor, maintain, and upgrade with whatever tools became available.

Over the decades that meant:

• Consistent strength training and movement (not fanatical bodybuilding, just enough to preserve muscle and mobility).

• Attention to diet, sleep, and stress without becoming a monk or a lab rat.

• Staying intellectually engaged—writing 28 novels, dozens of stories, running a Substack, writing a blog called Daily Pundit for more than 20 years, staying curious. Mental sharpness is non-negotiable.

• Aggressively adopting new interventions when the evidence looked solid: better supplements, off-label uses of existing drugs, tracking biomarkers, and adjusting as data improved.

The strategy is conservative in the best sense: bet on incremental, evidence-based gains while keeping a hopeful eye on exponential progress. I wasn’t waiting for the Singularity. I was trying to stay alive and functional long enough for it (or something like it) to matter to me.

The Singularity Hook

Vernor Vinge gave the idea intellectual muscle with his writings on the Technological Singularity—the point at which accelerating progress, especially superhuman AI, makes the future radically unpredictable and, in fact, unknowable. Ray Kurzweil popularized and refined it, tying it explicitly to longevity. Kurzweil’s concept of “longevity escape velocity” is almost exactly what I had been aiming for in practice: a tipping point where medical advances add more than one year of healthy life for every calendar year that passes.

I found these ideas enormously reinforcing. They gave a sturdy intellectual hook to the intuitive bootstrap approach I’d already been living. If technology was going to accelerate, my job was to stay on the runway long enough for the plane to arrive.

And now we’re hearing similar optimism from unexpected quarters. Elon Musk has said figuring out how to reverse aging is “highly likely” and that humans are “pre-programmed to die”—a program we can change once we understand it. In conversation with Peter Diamandis, Musk suggested longevity or semi-immortality is an “extremely solvable problem.” Whether or not the timeline matches the most optimistic forecasts, the direction of travel feels right. Biology is just another system we’re learning to engineer.

The Payoff So Far

My latest labs surprised even my physician. She looked at the numbers and said, half-jokingly, that I seemed to be growing physiologically younger. She said it as if the notion itself was slightly insane.

I just smiled. That had been the precise goal for half a century.

I’m 80 now, but I function closer to a fit 60. Energy, cognition, mobility, recovery—they’re all better than they have any right to be at my chronological age. I don’t claim perfection or invulnerability. I’ve had setbacks, made mistakes, and dealt with the ordinary wear-and-tear of decades. The Bootstrap Strategy never promised zero risk or perfect health. It promised a fighting chance to stay in the game.

What the Strategy Is Not

It’s not fanaticism. I enjoy life too much to turn existence into a sterile optimization project. You can keep your looksmaxers. I’m not going to become an agemaxer. Good food, good conversation, good books, time with family and friends—these aren’t distractions from the strategy; they’re part of what makes extra decades worth having.

It’s also not blind faith in any single guru, supplement, or protocol. I’ve followed the evidence as best I could, changed course when better data appeared, and remained skeptical of hype. The Heinlein influence again: competence includes intellectual honesty.

Looking Forward

We’re closer than ever to the kinds of breakthroughs that make “longevity escape velocity” plausible. AI is already accelerating drug discovery, personalized medicine, and our understanding of aging pathways. Regenerative therapies, senolytics, epigenetic reprogramming, and advanced diagnostics are moving from labs to clinics. Musk’s comments, Kurzweil’s timelines, and the general exponential trend in biotech all point the same direction.

My Bootstrap Strategy was always a bridge to that future. Stay healthy enough, informed enough, and engaged enough to grab the next rung when it appears.

I don’t know exactly when (or if) we’ll cross the threshold into radical life extension for those who want it. But I do know this: the boy who read Methuselah’s Children all those years ago is still here, still pulling on his bootstraps, and still betting that the future will be longer—and far more interesting—than the past.

I was twelve or thirteen years old, growing up in the Midwest, when I read Robert A. Heinlein’s Methuselah’s Children for the first time. Most boys my age were dreaming of becoming astronauts, or baseball players. I closed that book and made a conscious, deliberate decision: I was going to live as long as possible—centuries, if I could manage it.

That decision sounds absurd when I say it out loud even now. But Heinlein made it feel like the only rational choice.

In Methuselah’s Children, the Howard Families had achieved multi-century lifespans through careful selective breeding. They kept it secret for generations until the secret got out, and ordinary short-lived humans reacted with envy, fear, and persecution. Lazarus Long—Heinlein’s immortal troublemaker—embodied the refusal to accept the default human warranty of seventy or eighty years. He had already lived hundreds of years and fully intended to keep going. The book didn’t just present longevity as a technological gimmick; it presented it as a choice available to those willing to think in longer timeframes and act accordingly.

Something in me clicked. Mortality wasn’t an immutable law of nature. It was a problem that could be hacked.

Heinlein’s influence didn’t stop with longevity. His broader philosophy helped shape the kind of man I would to become. The famous Lazarus Long passage (later expanded in Time Enough for Love) hit me like a manifesto:

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”

I took that seriously. It became the blueprint for a deliberately eclectic life and skill set. It also fed directly into my political awakening. Heinlein’s fierce individualism and skepticism of coercive authority turned me into a lifelong libertarian of varying flavors. The persecution of the Howard Families read less like fiction and more like a warning about how collectives treat people who step outside the accepted lifespan.

That early spark led me to Ted Cogswell—husband of my ninth-grade sociology teacher and a well-known Analog short-story writer. In his home office I saw a wall of magazines containing every story he’d published. It was the first time I understood that real people—people from backgrounds like mine—actually did this. I decided I wanted a bookshelf like that.

I built one. For a while in the 1980s and early ’90s I was the most-published author in Analog. My first story there, “Instructions Enclosed,” was about an AI computer that bears an eerie resemblance to today’s large language models. Stanley Schmidt, the editor, became a mentor who regarded me as a personal discovery. George Scithers, at the time the editor of Fantasy and Science Fiction, bought my second story, Rest In Pieces, and later became my agent, selling my first novel to John Silbersack at Ace, Dreams of Flesh and Sand.

The science fiction world back then was astonishingly small and interconnected. I helped a young Bruce Bethke get his short story “Cyberpunk” published in Amazing Stories by recommending it to George Scithers, who had just taken over the magazine and happened to be my new agent. I even assisted with early edits on the novel version. (So yes, Bill Gibson was technically right—I did end up with “cyberpunk” stamped on my forehead, but I had a hand in minting the stamp.)

I eventually met Bob and Virginia Heinlein in person, closing a beautiful circle. I knew Asimov, Clarke, Ellison, Shatner, and many others. I once found myself in a Worldcon green room with a very drunk Jerry Pournelle while Larry Niven tried to keep him under control. Minutes later, onstage in front of thousands, a nervous young me was handed what I thought was a glass of water by Larry, from a pitcher he’d brought to the podium from the green room. It was straight vodka. The show went on.

And in 1987, after a late-night, beer-fueled phone call in which Bill Gibson accused me of stealing his bits for a story Stan Schmidt had bought, he sent me this gracious handwritten apology:

All of it—every story sold, every connection made, every late-night absurdity—traces back to that twelve-year-old boy in Indiana who read Methuselah’s Children and decided he wasn’t going to settle for the standard human lifespan.

Roger Zelazny added fuel to the fire. This Immortal (…And Call Me Conrad) showed me a radiation-mutated near-immortal navigating a ruined Earth with wit and stubborn competence. Lord of Light took it further: technological reincarnation, identity persisting across bodies, and a rebel (Sam) who refused to let an elite class monopolize the tools of extended life. Those books reinforced the lesson: longevity isn’t just about adding years. It’s about seizing agency over your own existence.

That early vow later led to my “bootstrap strategy,” which has dictated how I implemented my vow. Decade after decade of deliberate habits, learning, and refusal to accept default decline. Today, at 80, I’m physiologically closer to 60. The boy who read Heinlein is still here, still refusing to specialize like an insect, still living the future those 1950s and ’60s stories helped him imagine.

This is the first in a series about that journey—from literary spark to lived reality, and what it means for anyone today who wants to live long and prosper, (ahem) on their own terms.

I realize that some of you probably are looking for a nice, concise cookbook of nutrients, drugs, exercises, and so on, and I will get to all of that eventually. But since this is essentially the story of an over-riding imperative that has ordered much of my life since - the tale of my life - I will tell it in my own way and my own time. Hang in there. You’ll get all of what your want, but you’re going to get a lot of other stuff about me as well along the way.

I stopped posting here because, frankly, nothing much engaged my attention. In my eighty years I’ve been through dozens of military “crises,” each of which was the end of the world when it began, and was completely forgotten ten minutes after it ended. You can only set your hair afire so many times before you lose that autopyromania tendency. There is nothing new under the sun, or so say various compendiums of wisdom, which is another way of saying that the single most pervasive state of mind you are likely to experience over your lifetime is boredom.

But while I was tooling out for my first ride of the season on my half-century old gem of a bike, I thought, Hey - I’m turning eighty soon, and that is a new thing, at least in my personal experience.

Since the average fifty year old American has a life expectancy of eighty, it might well be that a chronicle of my thoughts and experiences approaching and then going forward from that event might be of interest to others as well. Now, admittedly, even though I may find myself of inexhaustible interest, I had to wonder what might actually be of interest to anybody who doesn’t happen to be me. Well, what about the fact that, at my age, I was enjoying my first ten mile bike ride of the season here in beautiful northwestern Indiana, (and it really was a beautiful day - perfect for a nice bike ride)?

Grok: What percentage of 80 year old American men can do a ten mile bike ride on a single speed touring bike?

There is no precise, publicly available statistic for the exact percentage of 80-year-old American men who can complete a 10-mile bike ride on a single-speed touring bike. This is a highly specific scenario involving self-reported or measured capability, terrain, fitness levels, health conditions, and bike type. Available data from national surveys, cycling studies, and fitness research allows for a reasoned estimate: likely well under 10%, and possibly in the low single digits (e.g., 2–8%) for the general population of 80-year-old men.

So I start out in a modest minority simply by living to be 80, (only about 47% of American men live that long), and then, at least as far as riding a bike, I occupy a much smaller minority of that 47% minority. Am I just lucky?

Well, no. I work at it. I’ve been working at it for at least half a century, possibly longer. What I have in mind is an extended compendium of why I decided to work at it, how, exactly, I have done that work, and what have been the results so far. This will be mixed up with my routines, regimens, goals and techniques as I move deeper into my ninth decade.

Look for stuff about the methods I use to keep my aging body as functional and capable as I possibly can, without being a total nut about it. Methods that include what drugs, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients I use, and how that has changed over the years. Thing that I eat. Diets I’ve followed. What has worked, what hasn’t, and what has actually been counterproductive.

I’ll also be talking about the biggest issues I’ve faced in my efforts so far to reach my goal which, to put it baldly, is to live as long as I want to. That sort of goal probably sounds insane to most folks, but I’ll try to put it into a manageable context, particularly the bootstrap strategy I am using to try to achieve it.

Three score and ten? Pshaw? A damned ocean clam can manage 500 years on average, and they are dumber than American politicians. We should be able to do better. I, for one, am certainly trying.

The Trump administration’s knee-jerk response to the shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis has exposed a glaring chasm between its campaign rhetoric and real-world reactions. Here we have a president who rode into office twice on the backs of Second Amendment enthusiasts, promising unbreakable support for the right to keep and bear arms (RKBA). Yet, when faced with the death of a legally armed citizen at the hands of federal agents, the tune changes faster than a credit card salesman dodging a tough question about interest rates.

This cropped up in one of Morgoth’s comment threads in which the issue was European authorities beginning to require users of certain “problematic” sites to submit to facial ID in order to use such sites. One of the methods proposed for evading this sort of intrusion was the use of VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) to access them.

One badly confused man (I think) , probably suffering from cognitive dissonance, responded to the VPN strategy with this:

Let’s unpack the markers of the NormieCon displayed in those few words.

First, ignore the various shades of meaning involving paranoid, paranoic, and paranoiac. Essentially, they all refers to someone who suffers from paranoia. So what is paranoia?

So this fellow thinks that those who used VPNs as a protections against intrusive state, corporate, or criminal actors is irrational. You know, crazy, batshit, coo coo for CoCo Puffs. He doesn’t like these irrational whackjobs. He doesn’t want to join their number. Because he, unlike them, (at least not in his own estimation), is not irrational.

Not at all. He’s just a normal guy being forced into their irrational company by a threat against his privacy from a state actor. But isn’t that exactly why many of those he deems irrational are also using VPNs? To protect themselves against a real, not an irrational, threat?

He simply cannot square that circle, because he’s set himself and his self-image up for a massive dose of cognitive dissonance.

I don’t want to do what these crazy guys are doing because that would mean I’m crazy, but I can’t be crazy because I’m a normal guy, but I’m responding to a real, not an irrational, threat by doing the same crazy thing these crazy guy are doing, yet I can’t be crazy my self-image demands that I perceive myself as normal, not crazy, and…

And round and round he goes, a rat trapped on an endless mental exercise wheel that is exhausting to think about, let alone watch in action.

Cognitive dissonance is the mental stress or discomfort felt when holding two conflicting beliefs, values, or attitudes, or when your actions contradict your beliefs, creating an internal inconsistency that people are motivated to resolve. To relieve this tension, individuals often change their behavior, alter their beliefs, justify their actions, or downplay the conflicting information to restore internal harmony. As a NormieCon, his self-image required him to characterize anybody acting in ways he does not consider normal to a level-headed conservative, as irrational.

But is it irrational to respond to a real threat with a real and effective strategy to counter it? No, of course it isn’t. But something is still going to have to give. Either he’s going to have to admit that he is being irrational, or that these others are not irrational paranoids. There is no resolution for him otherwise between the two conflicting perceptions.

Of course he got himself into this mess in the first place by trying to virtue-signal his own normality, which is a standard NormiCon defense of self-image: You’re the crazy ones, not me. But that only works so long as you don’t join the crazies yourself.

The bottom line is that his beliefs and perceptions have run smack-dab into a blunt, hard, uncaring rock of reality and come out very much the worse for it.

I imagine he will eventually resolve this for himself by simply ignoring the conflict. So, what do we call someone who believes two conflicting versions of reality at the same time?

I was born in 1946. My dad was very conservative and over-controlling. I was a willful child, and took naturally to rebellion. By the time I graduated from being addicted to cars, WWII history, and chasing sex, it was only natural that whatever ideology I had upon reaching college age was precisely the opposite of whatever+ my dad espoused.

I arrived at college as a fuzzy-minded liberal without much of an intellectual framework for my liberalism, but this was the middle 1960s, and I was soon provided one by the music, zeitgeist, and loud anti-war protesters of the day, and the thought leaders they espoused - Marcuse, Fanon, Sartre, Goodman (especially his "Growing Up Absurd,” and, of course, Mao. I moved hard left, and by 1968 I was a member of the Students for a Democratic Society, the “respectable” lefty student org from whence was eventually born the Weathermen, and then the Weather Underground (the dark cellar which later would vomit up Barack Obama, who was taught, trained, and launched politically by Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, both unapologetic Communist terrorists and complicit murderers who were later sanitized and adopted into the “academy.”

Unfortunately for my nascent leftism, it did not survive intimate contact with my rebellious personality. I soon discovered that, if anything, lefties, especially those involved with organized leftism, were even more control-addicted than my dad. That didn’t wear well, and after RFK was murdered while I was working on his campaign in 1968, I more or less backed away from politics entirely to concentrate on work-life issues and my goal of becoming a professional science fiction writer.

Then a friend handed me Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand, and I suddenly decided I’d found my true ideological home. Everything about the message she espoused resonated with me. And so for many years I called myself a Libertarian, (because hardly anybody but aficionados knew what Objectivism was) and even registered to vote as such.

Again, unfortunately, my Libertarianism ran afoul of my rationality, since I was unable to get past the obvious problem of its inapplicability to the real world. Apologists explained that true Libertarianism had never been tried in the real world, which, for me, rhymed rather too closely with similar apologetics from the Communists.

So I decided to call myself a “small-l” libertarian, eschewing the formalized prescriptions of the LP for a looser, less well defined belief in “liberty,” which was wishy-washy enough I didn’t feel any immediate need to delve further into the concepts involved. Who could not be for “freedom?”

The years ground on, I realized my goal of becoming a pro SF writer, and, for some reason, moved to San Francisco, where I lived for nearly 35 years. Freedom, right? And what could be more free than post-Summer of Love SF? Besides, the weather was great, and the scenery incredible. Even better, it was still more or less affordable back then.

Until the place was wholly swallowed by crack-brained lunatic leftists who, like maggots in good meat, ended up spoiling everything. And so many of my friends, whom I’d previously regarded as intelligent, voted for it, not once, but over and over again, despite all the evidence of the destruction those they put into, and kept, in office were wreaking upon The City which I had once loved, but now found myself beginning to loathe.

And then, in the immediate wake of 9/11, I started blogging. Which meant that I was putting myself, my ideas, and my commentary on whatever crossed my magpie brain, right smack into the public eye - and the public mouth. Commenters forced me to test everything. It became second nature. I would notice something and think it might be a good subject for a blog post, but then I would wonder, will it stand up if I do? Can I defend it rationally? Does it comport with reality?

When you’re putting up a dozen or so posts every single day - which I did for decades - you are forced into such considerations. I refused to block anybody for disagreeing with me, which naturally led me to dealing with a lot of criticism.

I like to think I did well enough that I never had to be ashamed of what I posted. If somebody, in my estimation, proved me wrong about something, I changed my mind, and did so publicly. Always in the back of my mind was John Maynard Keynes’ famous quote, “When the facts change, I change my mind - what do you do, sir?” In many cases the facts didn’t change, but my understanding and/or interpretation of what they meant would change, triggering a corresponding change in my stance.

Another of my touchstones came from Ayn Rand herself: A=A. Yes, she recycled that from Aristotle, but she added her own Objectivist twist that really appealed to me: Essentially, her position was that existence (reality) is objective and that things are what they are independently of human perception or whim. For Rand, this law underscores that anything in reality has an intrinsic nature, and our concepts of that thing must reflect that nature accurately.

It was on this basis that Rand defined insanity, neurosis, and psychosis:

She did not equate insanity directly with “refusal to see reality” in a single quote, but evasion (active blanking out of facts) is the closest conceptual parallel to willful disconnection from reality in her system.

Over time it became clear to me that both my rational and moral trajectories would depend on my being able to discern reality, recognize it as such, and make personal decisions and judgements based on the recognition. This stance was not per se either an ideology or a philosophy but more a tool or stance to help me deal in a human way with the world I existed in which I existed.

Eventually I came to believe this stance needed a bit of honing, and I eventually settled on the concept of “free thinking.”

A free thinker (or freethinker) is a person who forms opinions and beliefs independently, based on reason, logic, evidence, and critical inquiry, rather than accepting them on the basis of authority, tradition, dogma, or revelation.

I decided I could live with that, and have done so for the past fifteen years or so. If I’ve added any twist to it, it is my conviction that this method offers the best path to discerning reality, which I see as the basis for all rational thinking, especially my own. I can’t be responsible for the judgements of others around such determinations - in other words, you may see a reality in which a man can become a woman, or vice versa, but that is your problem, not mine - unless, of course, you go out of your way to make it my problem.

I don’t have much truck with formal philosophy which, I believe, is solidly limited by Sturgeon’s Law, coined by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, which states that “90% of everything is crap,” though he softens that a bit by noting that the remaining 10% is often excellent, making the overall field worthwhile. I might quibble with that latter notion, given that I find needing to eat a bowl filled with 90% crap in the hopes that the remaining 10% may make the overall field worthwhile. Your mileage, and gag reflex, may differ.

Anyway, here I am today, free-thinking my way into the second quarter of the 21st century, where the biggest impediment I have to deal with is political, cultural, and social powers of evil intent trying as hard as they can, with ever-increasing technological tools coming available to them with increasing rapidity, to blur or even erase reality itself.

So far, though, free-thinking seems to have been up to the task. Of course that all my change when our AI (masters, saviors, servants, slaves, pick as many as you would like) takes over our ability to perceive reality in ways we probably can’t imagine at this point.

It Takes a Lot of Coffee...

I have deliberately refrained from posting since news came of Charlie Kirk’s murder, because long experience has taught me a couple of things. First, nothing would seem newsworthy, or even worthy of comment, until the white heat of the bonfire lit by his assassination had subsided to more normal temperatures, and, second, that the storm of hot takes, false leads, actual facts, gaslighting, propaganda, dueling narratives, delusions, hallucinations, and God only knows what other hellish rhetorical devices would endure for several days before the cold bones of reality finally began to poke through the skin such calamities always construct to clothe themselves to suit some beauty in some eye of some beholder.

I think we are now, if not precisely there, at least close enough to perceive the rational and the real from where we now stand.

So, time to use one of reason’s most useful tools: Occam’s Razor.

Occam's razor is a problem-solving principle that states when choosing between competing explanations, the simplest one that requires the fewest assumptions is generally the most likely to be true. It's a useful heuristic or rule of thumb, often summarized by the phrase "entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity," and is a guiding principle for scientific reasoning and everyday problem-solving.

• Simplicity over complexity:

  If you have two potential explanations for something, Occam's razor suggests preferring the one that is less complicated and has fewer moving parts or assumptions.

1. Charley Kirk was murdered by an intelligent 22 year old man named Tyler Robinson.

2. Robinson acted alone, although his state of mind may have been somewhat influenced by others.

3. Robinson’s primary motive was based on his love for his transgender romantic partner, an equally young man named Lance Twiggs.

4. While raised in a conservative Mormon family, a couple of years before his high school graduation, Robinson began to rebel and took the opposite direction, from the right toward the left. In this, he was also subject to outside forces that bolstered his new beliefs, especially leftist points of view he found on Discord and doubtless elsewhere.

5. His disassociation from reality was increased by his love for Twiggs, whom he doubtless regarded as being directly threatened by Kirk’s opinions and his skill in voicing and defending them, and the fact that Kirk was gaining young converts to his point of view.

There are undoubtededly umbras, penumbras, emanations, and all sorts of outliers, some far more outlandish than others, but for now I am satisfied to stick with the tentative conclusions I have noted above.

As for that ever-so-urgent question always advanced in the wake of events like these - usually formulated as, We gotta do something, dammit! - as to “what should we do?” frankly, I have no idea. I suspect that most of the predictions of a great watershed moment for one faction or another will, as most such predictions usually do, eventually fizzle away to nothing. But if not, I’m still without a notion of what anyone else should do with, or about, such outcomes.

Personally, I will do what I always do, and fall back on the tried and true, which is based on my long and extensive background as a prepper.

In this case, the only thing I have done so far is simple: I placed a large order for more ammunition.

There’s a lot of this stuff out there. The most egregious example I can think of off the top of my head is the notorious “Black Christmas Holiday” called “Kwanzaa.”

Things proceeded fairly well, at least by African standards, until 1980, when a former army sergeant named Samuel K. Doe mounted a bloody but successful revolution, overturning the government then in place and promptly instituting a brutal, murderous dictatorship based on personal power and tribalism. The usual then ensued, and today Liberia is one of the poorest countries in the world.

At any rate, if these is anything, historically speaking, that could be construed as a Black American Nation, it would have to be Liberia (whose flag graces the opening graphic of this piece), where publicly performing a “Black National Anthem” might actually be appropriately tethered to reality.

The current outbreak of public obeisance such as with the NFL is, of course, nothing more than a scam and a grift, just another sticky-fingered race down the virtue spiral to the bottom. It is no more an American institution than the monstrosity that the NFL (and other major sports leagues) are currently morphing themselves into.

The "native land" in "Lift Every Voice and Sing" is deliberately ambiguous, allowing it to refer to the United States of America for African Americans as their present home, and also, for some, a symbolic longing for their ancestral African homeland from which they were taken.

“Deliberately ambiguous.” Uh huh. You wouldn’t want American Blacks singing a “national anthem” that pertains to the nation of America only. That interpretation would probably be deemed entirely rayciss in the Woke Wastelands of our contemporary culture.

And you certainly wouldn’t want something like that celebrating America at an American football game.

School Girls Told They Can Escape Boys in Their Locker Rooms if They Admit to Being Mentally Ill

Nothing says "women's equality" quite like requiring girls to admit they're crazy or religious zealots to escape the indignity of boys in their locker rooms and bathrooms. That, however, is the choice junior high and high school girls in Temecula, Calif., face this school year just to get a little privacy from boys who think they're girls.

The school board voted four to one to give girls this Hobson's choice as a way around California's law requiring girls to share bathrooms and locker rooms with boys.

I could see it if the the students had to declare that the trannies seeking to infest their private spaces were crazy as bedbugs in July, but apparently they have to smear themselves as nutbags in order to avoid the panty-penis wavers (or the bound-breasted bra-less boys).

Luckily, this policy has been tabled, at least for the moment. Girls (or boys) can request some sort of religious accommodation, but as of right now, everybody else is still out of luck.

BREAKING: Appeals Court EXCORIATES Obama Judge Chutkan, Sides with Trump Administration, Axes Billions of Dollars in Biden-Era Climate Grants

Judge Rao wrote the majority opinion and absolutely excoriated Judge Chutkan.

“We conclude the district court abused its discretion in issuing the injunction. The grantees are not likely to succeed on the merits because their claims are essentially contractual, and therefore jurisdiction lies exclusively in the Court of Federal Claims. And while the district court had jurisdiction over the grantees’ constitutional claim, that claim is meritless. Moreover, the equities strongly favor the government, which on behalf of the public must ensure the proper oversight and management of this multi-billion-dollar fund. Accordingly, we vacate the injunction,” Judge Rao wrote for the majority opinion.

As a general rule, judges do not usually smack down a fellow judge this brutally. By doing so, they sent an unmistakable message. As to whether judges like Chutkan will heed the message remains undecided. My hunch is that it will be ignored, though.

The Young Latino Swing to Trump Is Real

For all the bellyaching, posturing, proselytizing, and threats of violence both implied and precise, the immigration enforcement operations that Trump's Department of Homeland Security has been running across the country don't seem to be having an impact on at least one surprising segment of the voting population - young, Latino voters, especially males.

...Latino voters, Madrid said, are increasingly generic Americans. More specifically, they’re starting to resemble American voters of their own socioeconomic cohort. And because Latinos are disproportionately younger, less college educated and likelier to consume information on social media, they’re also likelier to adopt the voting habits of people in those segments.

Apparently the melting pot is still bubbling along. The truth is, though, that all American males under the age of 25 are swinging hard to the right, and right now, that means toward Trump.

It remains to be seen whether that swing will be permanent, but I suspect that it will. Political stances adopted by the young tend to remain for a lifetime. “As the twig is bent, so grows the tree,” and all that.

Do keep in mind, though, that young women are swinging just as hard to the left. But we have yet to discover how well that will hold after marriage, given that there is a strong correlation between the politics of their husbands and how women vote.

MSNBC Analyst Robbed Repeatedly in DC Doesn’t Understand Why Trump Cracked Down on Crime.

MSNBC analyst Ashley Parker is facing criticism for calling President Donald J. Trump’s National Guard deployment in Washington, D.C., an “occupation” and suggesting the troops serve no real purpose, despite previously lamenting repeated crimes against her family in the American capital. In a recent Atlantic article co-authored with Nancy A. Youssef, Parker argued the Guard’s presence had “chilled life in the city” and mocked the deployment as “sitcom-esque.”“To some—especially undocumented immigrants [sic]—the Guard presence is disconcerting at best, terrifying at worst,” she wrote, while dismissing President Trump’s federal crime crackdown as a “farcical” effort.

However, social media users quickly pointed out Parker’s own admitted frustrations with D.C. crime. In a post from June, she wrote: “After another bike was stolen last night, my husband and I realized our life as DC homeowners by the numbers includes: 1 stolen car; 2 stolen scooters/Vespas; 3 stolen bikes; a partridge in a pear tree; etc.,” painting a clear picture of ongoing theft and rising public safety concerns in the nation’s capital.

MSNBC commie ideologues (but I repeat myself) never let reality, even the reality of their own lives, interfere in the slightest with spouting the opinions they are paid to spout.

Artificial Intelligence Has Already Taken Over. Most Simply Haven't Noticed. Every day I feel more obsolete and I'm not alone.

Folks, let's cut through the noise. We've all seen the sci-fi movies where robots rise up and snatch our jobs overnight, but that's not how it's playing out. No dramatic takeover with lasers and terminators. Instead, artificial intelligence has slithered into our workplaces like a thief in the night, doing the heavy lifting in creative, analytical, and advisory roles while humans pretend they're still in charge. The bosses? Many are clueless, sipping their coffee and signing off on "human" work that's mostly machine-made. I've seen it firsthand, and if you're not paying attention, you're about to get blindsided.

This somewhat histrionic essay from the aptly named "Economic Collapse Report” Substack, (He’s good. Go read him.) leans hard on the “We’re all gonna die” trope, but does offer a pretty solid precis of one of the standard fears about the burgeoning use of AI, which mirrors the other side of that particular coin, which is the hope that AI is going to free us from human drudgery and allow our true talents and intellects to soar.

Which begs the question of whether the bulk of mankind has intellects capable of soaring under any conditions, or talents capable of being developed no matter what drivers might be applied. Pushing on one end of a wet noodle is a mostly fruitless endeavor.

That said, technophiles have been thinking about, writing about, and hoping for the bright, gleaming future mankind has to look forward to when the machines take over, no matter how much technophobes loathe the very idea.

I, myself, back in the Ancient Days, had a story published in Analog Science Fiction called “Think Ethic,” in which AI did come along and free most humans from the dull labor of their everyday jobs, while generating so much wealth that financial concerns were no longer a limiting factor. If you wanted to sit at home in your mini-mansion and spend your days pounding Bud Lights, or soma, you could do so. If you wanted to likewise spend your time on esoteric mathematical theory, you could have at that, too.

The first part of the story, the setup, lightly covered the “takeover,” and the standard fears of mankind being rendered obsolete by machines that deprived humans of their birthright of hanging their own self-valuations on the labor they performed. Up till then, a man, when asked who he was, might respond, “I’m an engineer.” Or, less impressive, perhaps, but still honest labor, “I’m a ditch digger.” (Note the assumptions built into the term “honest labor”). In other words, human identity was inextricably bound up in what humans did for a living. Some things were highly prestigious, and others not so much. Human self-esteem tended to track on such evaluations, for better or worse.

Kipling, in the Gods of the Copybook Headings, said, “If you don’t work you die.” AI said, “You don’t need to work any more.”

The Triumph of The West is said to be grounded on The Protestant Work Ethic.

Less noted, but perhaps even more crucial, governments everywhere tend to fund themselves by extracting portions—sometimes very significant portions—of the financial fruits of the labor of their citizens. (The genesis of government in general is said to have been ancient outlaws and warlords conquering peaceful farmers, then confiscating part of their harvests for the privilege of being conquered. “That’s a nice crop you have there. We’ll protect it for you.”

Today, many major western economies are so desperate for warm human bodies that labor for the succor of the tax farming system that they import them in vast quantities, while instituting every more stringent systems of control to make sure the bodies generate such funds as are required.

What happens if the serfs are freed from their lives of endless indentured servitude? The labor theory of value is commie bunk, but what if labor itself becomes bunk? Now, admittedly, we starry-eyed SF writer/dreamers tended to handwave such concerns in favor of chronicling various facets of our imagined Brave New Utopias. In my Analog story, I posited that the result of freeing most of humanity from the need to perform drudge work would be an enormous upwelling of human creativity and accomplishment that would advance the lot of the human race to unimaginable levels. Some tinker-mathematician-amateur physicist would come up with a workable FTL drive. Another auto-didact bio-geneticist would finally unravel the problem of extreme life extension, and mankind would become a race of immortals. Death, where would thy sting be then?

Okay, I was young and nowhere as cynical as I am now, when one of my bywords, based on long experience, is that if humans can find a way to fuck it up, they will. And they always, always can find a way.

That is the significance of Dijkstra’s famous dictum that leads off this essay. Arguing whether AI really thinks (as humans understand the term) is about as useful, and relevant, as arguing about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. Infinitely more important is what Artificial Intelligence can do. And according to the Economic Collapse Report, it is already doing a very great deal. And will do a lot more in the very near future. And that Substacker is not at all happy about it.

AI has become something like the elephant in the famous parable of the blind men. Everybody sees some aspect of it, and reacts accordingly, but the overwhelming reality of the entire elephant squatting in the middle of their living room remains inherently beyond their reach or grasp.

The rapidly approaching confluence of The Fourth Turning, (basically a much expanded and explicated version of Kipling’s The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!) and The Singularity, (I don’t limit the event by calling it a “tech singularity” because it is much more than that) combine to provide a period unlike any ever seen before in human history. The Cycles of the Turnings have always existed, (along with many other historical cycles), but never has a Singularity accompanied one of their climactic existential crisis moments. The Singularity will affect everything. And no, I don’t think that prediction will turn out to be at all overblown. There are too many, and too complex, parts, cogs, wheels involved in the gargantuan, brittle, and chaotic historical, technological, ideological, economic, and religious globalmachine that is grinding to a climax over the next three or four years. Frankly, I don’t have a clue what the ultimate outcome will be, or what form(s) it will assume as it inevitably overtakes us and all our works and days.

Coffee Will Be the Last to Go

For those of GenX (the first generation of kids of Boomers), it has become a point of pride, and an integral part of their generational mythology, to bemoan, loudly and often, the brutal conditions under which they endured their childhoods.

“Our parents ignored us!

“We were raised like feral animals!”

“It was so bad they ran public service ads on TV announcing that it was ten o’clock, and did our parents know where their kids were!”

“We drank our water out of garden hoses!”

“If we got a bump or scrape, we just rubbed it with dirt and kept on going!”

“Our parents let us ride bikes without helmets!”

“Our playgrounds were death traps, and nobody cared.”

There’s a vast and growing memeosphere centered on their travails.

Now, the above meme is a perfect example that illustrates my contention expressed in the title of this little essay. Let’s jump back to a bit I published a couple of days ago:

Somewhere around third or fourth grade I began to develop a rudimentary fashion sense. Prior to that, I put on whatever my mom provided without a second thought. But then a couple of kids showed up to school wearing “pegged” jeans, which were pretty much Wranglers, (Levis, like Coors, had yet to cross the Mississippi) with the legs re-seamed to make them close to skin-tight. I begged my mom to alter my own jeans like that, but she refused. So I came up with an alternative that involved wrapping the legs of the jeans tightly around by calves, then folding the bottoms into a tight cuff at my ankles to hold everything in place - although sometimes some concealed safety pins were required.

Now, I found that visual meme about fake pegged jeans in a canonical collection of GenX memes. Just another of their generational memories, supposedly. They have lots of those. Lots. For such a tough and stoical generation, they never shut up about those memories of how they were abandoned and abused by their evil and uncaring Boomer parents. Well, they may have mistaken being allowed to grow up free-range as some sort of low key horror story, but in all their yammering about their travails in the dangerous world their parents subjected them to, they never shut the fuck up long enough to ask one simple question: Why did their parents raise them that way?

Because if they did, the answer would be obvious: Because we Boomers were raised exactly the same way.

Except we didn’t spend the rest of our lives whining about it, and expecting bravery participation badges for merely existing in such horrifying conditions. Why? Because the way GenX was raised wasn’t horrifying at all. In fact, if you nail them to the nearest wall and apply a set of hot Farah Fawcett-Majors curling irons to their tender parts, they will admit that they mostly enjoyed the hell out of the way they grew up.

And because we did, too, we’ve always turned a rather cold ear to their plaints, which strike us more as the chorused wail of the drama queen choir than anything actually generationally mind-shattering.

Yes, generations are different. But not very much.

Well, except for those damned Zoomers. They should probably have been strangled at birth.
