For many of us, life can be hard — and we leave behind dreams in place of being responsible, logical, and reasonable. What would that be like - to live out your childhood dream? Dr. Brian Keating, Chancellor’s Distinguished Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics at the University of California, San Diego, and the Principal Investigator of the Simons Observatory, is going to tell us all about what it’s like to have the career he dreamed of as a child — looking at other planets, searching for life, and unraveling the mysteries of the Universe!

There are so many things that take us away from the dreams of our youth... but can we reach an understanding that our dreams reflect who we truly are?

Dr. Martha Beck suggests thinking back to little you — the playful, joyful child inside of each of us who felt expansive and open-hearted. What special skills did you have as a child — before the world beat you down! — that indicated that you had something unique to offer?

Were you a deep thinker who was often described as dreamy?

Did you have the ability to imagine worlds that did not exist?

Could you draw images from your mind’s eye with accuracy?

Were you adept at coming up with elaborate choreography for water dance routines? (My cousin Rebekah and I excelled here...)

Those skills of your youth — the skills you honed when no one was watching, the things that made you eager to play just a little longer — those are things that make you you. Let’s find out who that is!

Have a great week, and let us know if you discover any glimpses of your inner child talents this week!

Mayim

SPONSORED

We’ve all hit that afternoon slump. Isolated caffeine — the kind in most energy drinks — hits harder and drops faster because there’s nothing in it to smooth the curve. Tea works differently. The caffeine comes bundled with L-theanine and polyphenols — the way it exists in the plant. That’s what gives you a noticeably steadier feeling. She was the youngest of four, born into a culture that had no use for her big mouth and witty banter. When her mother died suddenly, a single option surfaced: marriage. She wasn’t even fifteen years old. Her father expected her to abide, but what followed was one of the most unlikely origin stories in comedy.

She began sleeping on friends’ couches to avoid becoming someone’s wife. She thought it would be two or three days, but she made it last for two years. Her father was a rich and powerful man; many of her friends’ parents didn’t want to make him an enemy. And some agreed with him! She was turned away because her ideas about choosing her own life were considered dangerous.

Now she sells out theaters and makes people feel seen in a way that only Zarna can. It all started when she stopped talking about high heels and trusted that her voice would make us listen and laugh.

In this episode, they also explore:

One in six Americans is on an SSRI. The opioid crisis is still unfolding. Psychedelics have the potential to address both — and much more. But can we keep their regulation out of the wrong hands?

Subscribe now

The popularity of psychedelics thrived in the 1960s and 1970s and, in many circles, was synonymous with the radical and anti-establishment politics surrounding the Vietnam War and the civil rights movements. President Nixon criminalized all psychedelics, including those that held the promise of significant treatments for a variety of mental health conditions. Because of this criminalization, critical psychedelic research went underground for decades. Recently, President Trump’s executive order has fast-tracked FDA research, but who controls the parameters of this research and whether profit or healing will take precedence remain to be seen.

It’s estimated that there may be 10,000 psychedelic clinics across America in the not-too-distant future. What does that mean for the future of mental health as we know it?

In this episode, they also explore:

If you knew the two—count 'em: TWO — episodes we are dropping, you would be VERY stoked! Wait for it....

This week we have two very different guests on MBB, and both are thought-provoking pioneers in their fields who refuse to give up on their dreams, no matter how hard it might seem to achieve those dreams...

Subscribe now

Our episode tomorrow features Dr. Rick Doblin, the founder and president of MAPS, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. Dr. Doblin was on MBB years ago when we were just starting up, and the notion of a widespread acceptance of the medical benefits of psychedelics to treat PTSD, depression, and various other mental health challenges seemed a far-off idea.

One question we asked then was: How could people possibly get behind this? Is there enough research to support it? Aren’t people going to become couch potatoes if we just let them get high all of the time, and how will society continue to function?!

Well, smash cut to several years later, and Dr. Doblin’s work has gained global attention as veterans and those suffering from treatment-resistant depression and PTSD have sought psychedelic treatment as an alternative to what Western medicine has been offering, courtesy of Big Pharma... Dr. Doblin is back to update us on the significant changes in the field of psychiatry, how it impacts psychedelic research, and how he is finally seeing his work bear fruit that can help so many people who need help. It’s an awesome conversation!

On Friday, we drop our episode with comedian and screenwriter, the hilarious Zarna Garg! In case you think you know who Zarna is — and especially if you don’t — you must not miss this episode. Zarna’s specials, her podcast, and her TikToks speak so deeply to the immigrant experience, the insanity of America, and the beauty of being part of this crazy melting pot. What if we are those mirrors?

In this week’s episode of Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown, Mayim and Jonathan sit down with Robert Edward Grant — polymath, inventor, entrepreneur, mathematician, philosopher, and host of Code X on Gaia — for a conversation on the Age of Aquarius, what that really means for humanity, and the mathematics of consciousness itself.

Subscribe now

According to Robert, the current chaos of our times isn’t random. Earth moves through 26,000-year seasonal cycles. We just crossed the vernal equinox into spring. We are moving out of the Age of Pisces: two fish swimming in opposite directions, tied together — science and spirituality pulling apart. For the next 2,160 years, the Age of Aquarius takes the reins. The disorientation most of us are feeling right now is what a shift of this magnitude looks like from the inside.

Robert brings the mathematics for what’s underneath it. He says our thoughts may not be happening inside our brains at all. It could be that the brain is a radio receiver, and emotional states determine what frequency it is tuned to. As we weave through his research, we see that math is not a human invention, but a discovery. We see geometry everywhere, from the music we hear to the code in our subconscious.

Through Leonardo da Vinci, the Egyptian pyramids, and truths that may predate recorded history by tens of thousands of years, he traces the hidden geometry of the universe — and illuminates the patterns lying in wait.

In this episode, they also explore:

What do you do for a living? I know, weird way for me to start the week with y’all.

But if you had to answer, what would you say? Some people have “easy” answers to this one. Some “easy” responses might be:

I’m a teacher.

I’m a pediatrician.

I’m a stay-at-home dad.

I am a welder.

I’m an Olympic hurdler.

Subscribe now

But for some of us, the answer to that question is a bit more complicated. Maybe we are a lot of things, or maybe we don’t compartmentalize our tasks and abilities in neat and clean ways.

And maybe we don’t have to be just one thing in this life. Perhaps those of you who think you do or are “one thing” actually might realize that you’re a lot more than that one thing.

Because we’re never just one thing! Even if our profession is easily encapsulated by “I’m a nanny” or “I’m a graduate student in psychoneuroendocrinology,” we are never just that! We are also friends, partners, daughters and sons, sisters and brothers, mothers and fathers, and black belts in taekwondo or whatever we are!

And also — we are just in these meat suits for this lifetime, but apparently we are actually spiritual beings having a physical experience. So all of these labels are just that: labels.

I know this seems a bit scattered, but there’s a reason. Our guest this week makes his living being all of the things he is and more. He’s a self-described polymath, like so many famous polymaths before him. Leonardo da Vinci was a polymath, as was Benjamin Franklin. Some people have mastery in so many categories that who they are is literally a definition of all of those things: a polymath!

Sir Robert Edward Grant is someone hard to describe. You have to watch this episode to understand this particular polymath.

And I hope you’ll be inspired by Robert — as Jonathan and I were — to see all of the facets of yourself all at once, and not feel like you have to pick one particular identity.

Enjoy the ride in your meat suit this week!

Mayim

SPONSORED

Do you feel like your hormones could be out of whack? His central argument: the lens through which you approach your own suffering may be the very thing keeping you stuck in it - and psychiatry needs to evolve to help you see that.

Subscribe now

Mayim breaks down one of Dr. Conti’s most profound suggestions — that if a diagnosis becomes your sole identity, the brain will actually reinforce it. Every time you return to a problem as the primary fact of your existence, you deepen the groove that rumination is creating in your brain. He’s offering a clinical framework for redirecting attention toward what is functioning, and why that reorientation affects real mental health improvement.

More than half of the physical complaints that walk into a general practitioner’s office originate in the mind not as fabrication, but as the body’s honest response to unprocessed psychological overload. Mayim and Jonathan sit with what that actually means: your back pain, your gut issues, and your chronic fatigue may not be separate problems requiring separate specialists; they may be indications of a system under pressure that needs focused psychological care.

In this live, they also explore:

Why internet self-diagnosis and social media labeling can be dangerous — and what the actual clinical criteria are for knowing when something needs professional attention versus when you’re just wired differently

The case that many mental health challenges are spiritual in nature, and what it means that our healthcare system lacks a framework for treating them that way

How chronic background stress erodes your capacity to handle normal life — and why you often can’t see it happening, because your baseline keeps shifting without your awareness

Practical takeaways from the recent episode with Dr. Stacey Sims, Exercise Physiologist and Nutrition Scientist, on women’s health, protein timing, and what actually happened when Jonathan snuck a bolus of protein into Mayim’s bedtime routine

“If I am trained to constantly look for everything that’s going wrong, that adds a level of stress on my body and my mind that impacts the entire system. Let’s break it down.

Subscribe now

I don’t want to take away all of my therapists’ fun in figuring this one out, but some of my guesses as to why I am gullible include:

Being a people-pleaser so as to minimize tension

Some limitations I have in certain fields of study, leading to susceptibility to mis- or disinformation

The internet makes me crazy, and I can’t process all of the information anyway, so my brain kind of assumes everything is right in some way (!?)

Social media is such an echo chamber that things get repeated so many times that I start to wonder if, because I am not on social media, I am missing out on some fundamental truth every second of the day

This is a lot. Right!?

Funnily enough, I’m also prone to being a very salty critic of other people’s bullsh*t, so it’s funny that in some ways, I am so discerning and skeptical but in other ways, I am so impressionable!

What’s a gal to do? I don’t have an answer, honestly. This week’s guest helped me keep things right-sized, though. Dr. Stacy Sims is an international exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist with a goal of revolutionizing exercise, nutrition, and performance for women.

Her contributions to the sports nutrition industry have established a new niche, and she is an expert on sex differences in training, nutrition, and health.

One of the things she discusses is HRT, since it comes up in so many conversations we have regarding health for women. Dr. Sims sheds light on the fact that HRT may not be for everyone, which I found shocking… since everyone else (or so it seems) thinks it’s for everyone.

This realization that there is more than one way to look at this issue reminded me that the same holds true for everything we examine or ponder: relationship dynamics, medical information, mental health challenges, the news cycle... There is always more than one way to look at something. And just because someone says something, that doesn’t mean it’s true!

If I’m the only one struggling with this seemingly clear fact, don’t tell me because that would be really embarrassing!!!!

I’m curious what you find that you may have assumed but may actually need more analysis before you make decisions, whether it be health-related, self-related, or even spirituality-related.

Happy to be here learning as I go with all of you!

Have a great week!

Mayim
<p class="button-wrapper" If we don’t bridge the gap between information and healing, the body and the mind will continue to suffer. Even Lady Gaga’s fibromyalgia was connected to sexual assault, weaving her physical crisis with her mental health. Trauma shapes longevity, disrupts immune function, and can be passed down genetically to the next generation. When mind and body are treated separately, the tools to break that cycle remain out of reach.

This is one reason for the growing popularity of AI “therapists.” They listen to what we have to say, instead of shuffling us out the door.

But as psychiatry and medicine converge, Dr. Conti believes that healing is possible. It becomes accessible when we look at the whole story. Ancient philosophy and cutting-edge neuroscience, including research informed by psychedelics like psilocybin, are filling the pages — pointing to a generative drive in us, a spirituality that overarches everything and anchors us to our route to health and happiness.

In this episode, this conversation also explores:

The Breakers have questions. So do Mayim and Jonathan. And while “death” remains an unsolvable mystery between the two — whether he was “mostly dead” as Miracle Max famously puts it in The Princess Bride, or if “nearly dead” in itself doesn’t mean dead — they’ve only just started to unravel the mystery. Barbra Banner’s story steps in. If you want a full picture of how this advertising executive became one of the most sought-after media figures around, start with Suzanne Giesemann, whose episode still has skeptics turning their heads. Then, as they revisit Shaka Senghor’s story, Jonathan reflects on the moment that stayed with him most: the power of literacy as a lifeline. In solitary confinement, Shaka built a structure of reading, writing, and working out that turned seven years in solitary confinement into a stepping stone to his life as an author.

Then a spontaneous turn of events. Mayim and Jonathan ask the community: What was the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 list the week you were born? Watch now for a joyful jaunt down the rabbit hole about music, memory, and whether or not the universe has a sense of humor about what it sends you into the world with.

In this live, they also explore:

The EMT who received an intuition to revive a body already zipped into a bag — and what that says about the things science can’t explain

Whether childhood trauma and the ability to leave the body are connected — and what that might mean for who has NDEs and why

Why Barbra Banner describes herself as a funny medium — and why Mayim, a self-described skeptic, still can’t explain what happened in her reading

Suzanne Giesemann — where to start if you want to understand how Barbra Banner found her abilities and became her student

Shaka Senghor’s dream, written in a prison cell: that one day Oprah would talk about his book

A tease for Tuesday’s episode so cryptic even Jonathan would be amazed if anyone could figure it out

"He was not unwakeable from death. And Barbra’s was no different. The idea of mediumship was so far outside her life as a seasoned advertising and marketing executive that you may as well have told her she was going to space. Her idea of a medium was someone hunched over a crystal ball, spinning tales of the future.

She wasn’t that.

But it was during that time that orbs started appearing in her audition tapes, a clock flew off the wall, a fan spun at 50 miles an hour on its own — its light flashing even though there was no bulb. But quite possibly the tipping point? Her deeply skeptical husband said there was definitely something going on.

She took a class. Within weeks, she saw her father on the other side.

Barbra approaches mediumship with humor and warmth that is unique to her readings. She believes laughter is one of the highest vibrations there is, and she sits it beside grief, moving through them together.

In this episode, they also explore:
