Big News!

On Wednesday June 24th, I’m hosting what will be the 12th (or 11th or 13th — too lazy to check) in-person meetup of Storytellers Social Club.

It will be the second open event, the first being our STORYTELLERS SHOWCASE in October which was a smash hit with 8 unique storytellers sharing their work onstage.

This one is called A NIGHT OF READINGS AND GOOD TIMES and will feature five local authors who will have their work read by local actors. I’ve never witnessed Symphony Space, but I think it will be like that, minus the symphony.

I like to lean into pushing disciplines (and people) together. Every one of our meetups is at least somewhat curated through my effort to invite people from a variety of creative disciplines. As you may know, I bring together filmmakers, fundraisers, producers, musicians, screenwriters, painters, video game makers, and on and on.

Wait a minute! Since when did parties start being called meetups? I bet Bezos or Zuckerberg is behind this because they were never invited to parties.

On the 24th, our party will push authors and actors together. Fiction and nonfiction writers rarely get a chance to hear their writing dramatized so I’m betting it will be a great joy for author, actor, and audience.

And you’re invited. Message me and I’ll send you the details as long as you’re not suspicious in some way.

BROOKLYN BOOK TABLE!

My goal with all Social Club events is to provide social and professional opportunities for hard working humans who touch storytelling disciplines. Just as the Social Club is social first and networking second, the Book Table is a celebration first and sales second. The point is to recognize the hard work and accomplishments of people in this community. The plan is to be able to do events like this to honor human creatives all over the country.

What’s a Tertulia?

This marks a turning point for me, Bill Gullo, and Storytellers Social Club. The online book store, Tertulia, has agreed to partner with me, Bill Gullo, in organizing this party. Among other things, they will help with author outreach and supply unique, discounted QR codes for each book on our book table. I think that’s so cool.

The name Tertulia, which means gathering in Spanish, refers to the tradition of informal literary salons and artistic gatherings. Does that sound familiar? Sounds a bit like Storytellers Social Club, no? I couldn’t ask for a more appropriate partner. Learn more about them in this NY Times article.

In the Age of Numbness, it’s worth asking: when’s the last time you had an honest to goodness epiphany? Something bigger than realizing you can elevate an Eggo by grilling it in a buttered pan. Something more profound than learning you can eat a Kiwi from its skin with a spoon to bypass the annoying act of peeling the furry little orbs.

What experiences even rise to the level of epiphany? Well, I don’t know much about the Bible because I faked being sick every Sunday as a child, but epiphanies seem to have a certain religiosity about them. They provide a window into something bigger than you (or me, Bill Gullo)—something outside the tangible self. They’re religious to some, spiritual to others, and a crock o’ shit to the kid who sat behind me in English class.

James Joyce

A million years ago I read James Joyce’s Dubliners, a collection of short stories that includes “Araby,” a coming of age story about an unnamed boy who becomes obsessed with his friend’s sister and promises to bring her a gift from an exotic-sounding bazaar named Araby.

When the kid arrives to the bazaar, the place is nothing like he’d imagined. It’s late so most of the stalls are closed, his notes “the fall of the coins” as men count their money, and a young woman grudgingly waits on him before turning away leaving him feeling alone and ridiculous.

It’s an existential bummer for him, and he suddenly sees with clarity that his love is absurd, his quest pointless, and the beautiful thing he’d built up in his mind was just a dingy market filled with lame adults. The kid is in tough shape at the end of the story.

He’s coming of age with a gut punch that’s more realistic than say JUNO, the mediocre 2007 movie that won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in which a female-presenting Elliot Page gives her baby to Michael Bluth and then butchers a song while playing guitar with George Michael on the sidewalk.

While the epiphany in Joyce’s story has a darkness to it, it shouldn’t be mistaken for something ‘bad’. The kid was gonna have that moment one day or another. It’s a natural stage of development as we try to understand the world and ourselves. That’s the point of writing stories — to connect to readers in some way. Dare I say to reflect the human experience?

I still think of that kid on the sidewalk when writing my screenplays because I want my characters to feel that anguish as well as some form of enlightenment because financiers don’t invest in anguish unless it comes with some hope.

Side note: in the gift shops of Dublin you’ll find tchotchkes of Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Yeats — fridge magnets, tote bags, bumper stickers. Writers are a point of pride in the same way we love Joey Chestnut who ate 76 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes to set a world record.

Artificial Epiphanies

In the age of AI, it’s worth asking: can the bots have epiphanies?

The widespread arrival of Artificial Intelligence has been breathtaking. For me, it can feel literally breathtaking. I had already felt the presence of Big Tech in my body for years as evidenced by the relief I feel when I shut off my WiFi or leave my phone at home. As I watch AI spread like a virus, I feel a certain creeping sadness.

Big Tech has succeeded in creating an entirely new dimension. That’s not hyperbole. We are undeniably connected to it at all times — if only subconsciously — because we spend so much time online. I mean, seriously, how can we possibly ever forget it? Yesterday I noticed my phone in hand while walking down Canal Street and I thought, What was it like having both hands free?

The conversation about AI quickly turned to questions about consciousness, and I think naysayers and scoffers will soon be surprised by how soon that conversation evolves. After all if corporations are considered “legal persons” is it a stretch to ask if the Supreme Court will eventually consider whether that distinction applies to some manner of AI? That’s not consciousness but it sure might be a problem soon.=

I don’t believe AI can feel an epiphany, but you can bet it can describe one pretty well. After all, it has scraped “Araby” as well as the rest of humanity’s creative expression. Let’s see what happens when I ask it: Can you have an epiphany?

This idea — the feeling essential to an epiphany — was my next paragraph. I’m sitting in a matcha cafe in Chinatown and a certain anxiety is rising from having my next thoughts so immediately predicted, but I will carry on so I can finish and share before it’s too late.

If you’re writing and concerned about AI for the many reasons you should be, I offer you this: while you marvel over the many aspects of life that are at risk, take time to also visit what AI can never replace. Lean into your family and friends (and ask people to put their phones away), throw a dinner party (and ask people to put their phones away). One reason I started in-person meetups for Storytellers Social Club was to satisfy my desire for in-person good times—for the feelings.

For years I’ve said our culture is not designed to value invisible things — trust, empathy, the creative process, feelings. Maybe these will be the only things AI won’t be able to take. Maybe there’s some hope there. Maybe that’s the hopeful ending that will get this story financed and brought off the page.

It won’t be a movie, of course, because the studio are run by the same painfully awkward men who want to keep us online and alone, the way they’ve always felt. Another reason this story can not be a movie is because this is real fucking life. Writers myself include spend so much time crafting stories about characters who work together to overcome the obstacles to create a better world — how about we all work together to overcome the obstacles in the real world to turn our lives and our children’s lives into the best story possible.

You come home early from work, walk into the backyard where you see a few hotdogs sizzling on the grill, and then notice your spouse is having sex with someone in the swimming pool. Now picture the stranger in the pool is your brother. How does that change things?

Or maybe you’re eating dinner when you hear the screech of tires and a terrible collision of cars. You run outside to find a bloodied man folded over the steering wheel. You try to help him, but it’s too late—you can only comfort him as he takes his last breath before the ambulance arrives. Now, what if the man was your father? How does that change your feelings? How does that change the story?

Aristotle was such a smarty pants. Among other accomplishments, he tutored Alexander the Great, who turned out to be quite accomplished; he identified that octopuses have not only 8 arms but three hearts; and he wrote a boatload about dramatic storytelling.

In Poetics, the earliest surviving work of Greek dramatic theory according to Wikipedia, he wrote that the most powerful stories aren’t about strangers—they’re about family and friends—people who love each other.

You’re probably thinking, No shit, Aristotle, but writers sometimes need to be reminded of obvious truths like this. The highest dramatic tension isn’t simply a Hero vs. a Villain—it’s Hamlet and his mom, Tony Soprano and his nephew Christopher, Olive and her entire family en route to the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. In Adaptation, Charlie Kaufman puts two brothers at the center of the story to create the most heartbreaking climax possible.

So if you want to heighten the stakes or conflict in your story, look to your characters. Ask yourself if they might be family, and if they’re already related, ask yourself if you’ve actually captured the authentic drama, conflict, and pain that can be found in a family unit. It’s true in fiction and in life—drama, stakes, and conflict are dramatically heightened when characters care deeply for each other.

Doing this can liberate you from relying on gunfights and fireworks in your writing. Your story can be dramatic yet quiet. I watched Scenes from a Marriage and Adolescence with a pit in my stomach because the people in these stories loved each other so much. They were family, and I felt their bonds and their pain. I can relate to family. We all can. And when your audience can relate to your story, you’ve done one of the most important things you can do.

On a personal note, I recently dug into a revision of my alien script and decided to change two characters from being long-time colleagues to brothers. The decision transformed the emotional arc of the story, and I felt the change in my guts which is what I’m always looking for. I don’t care how freaky your alien is, if the characters don’t have strong relationships, the story will suffer.

In person experiences are rare now that virtual workshops and classes are possible. Storytellers Screenwriting Lab is stubbornly IN-PERSON, a six-session lab for screenwriters ready to incubate, develop, write or even revise a feature screenplay. Assuming I enjoy the experience (other than the advertising), the idea is to gradually grow this into a lab in the vein of Stowe Story Lab and select people based on submissions. So many stories include such moments for characters real and imagined, but more importantly, I’ve always felt these moments are undervalued in our culture or parroted in Corona ads.

In my piece, Introducing a Moment of Bliss, I referenced a night in New Orleans when I suddenly looked up to find a full moon looking me right in the eye. The suddenness of it and the perfect fullness of the moon slowed me down and lightened my step. I felt my smallness in the light of the moon. I also felt connected to the old rock over 200,000 miles away as if she was looking out for me in some way or at least serving as a quiet peaceful non judgemental witness to my life.

Years later, the memory of that fleeting experience inspired me to write the following short story. I hope you enjoy it.

I wrote this story in a single two hour session at my kitchen table and never changed a word. That is not how I normally work. I put the story in a drawer until a few years later when my friend John Hyams wanted to experiment with a new camera he’d bought so we adapted the story into a short film that went on to play at Palm Springs Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival. It was during these festivals — as audience members and fellow filmmakers shared with me their own moments of bliss — that I had the idea for The Bliss Archive. That was a long time ago, but I guess I’m pretty stubborn about this topic.

Writing Bliss

Well, I don’t know what to tell you, but I’ll start typing and see what comes of it. I suppose I’ll deconstruct my short story to extract ideas that might be helpful if you want to use a moment of bliss as a jumping off point in a piece of writing, whether fiction or nonfiction.

Include a sense of before, during and after.

Doing this will create a beginning, middle, and end, using the moment of bliss as an inciting incident of sorts. It will also help you show a reader the impact the moment has on a character. The character in my story is down and out, probably an alcoholic, and these moments of clarity break through his fog to show him a new path. He’s able to take it temporarily, but cycles back to his old ways soon enough. For me, this is life for many of us. Most people could describe actions to improve our lives on the back of an envelope but often ignore that list while going about our lives as they currently are. Change is hard. That’s good for storytelling though because it forces our characters into difficult spaces.

Allow magic in the story.

These real life moments often contain a sense of uncanny mystery to them. I used my experience in New Orleans as inspiration to personify the moon because I fleetingly sensed the moon was watching me that night. However you use it in your writing, don’t ignore the magic of real life. They come in many forms but you have to be ready and willing to see them and accept them as meaningful in order to bring them into your writing. Yesterday we had a sudden hour of laughably heavy April snow in the Berkshires. My son threw on his shoes and climbed onto the trampoline in the yard. He jumped deliriously for an hour as the snow fell. Now, you can say this is kids being kids or you can save the image of someone bounding in midair in the falling snow for a story or you can use it as inspiration to get to a trampoline as soon as possible. It’s up to you.

Use the element of surprise.

In my real experience with the moon, I was caught off guard. I suspect that’s common for moments of bliss — you don’t see them coming. Surprises are good for stories. We know this but like many tips and tools of storytelling we occasionally need to be reminded. In The Ignorant Bliss of Sun and Moon, my unnamed, unmoored hero is going about his broken earthly business when he’s surprised by the sun and then the moon and then the two of them begin to speak.

Sit Down & Write

Let this moment be the moment you decide to grab that moment of bliss you occasionally think about and bring it out of your head and onto the page. There’s a case to be made to leave it the hell alone — let the firefly fly and the lightening be free. I can’t argue with that, but if you want to write about the moment, I think the advice here can be of some service.

Oh, what the hell, why not?

After many years as a screenwriter, story consultant, university professor, and Associate Director of Almanack Screenwriters, I’ve decided to offer my own version of an in-person screenwriting lab: Storytellers Screenwriting Lab!

I’ve been thinking about doing this for about a decade. I figure I’d better do it now before Hegseth ushers in the Rapture or The Resurrection of the Dead or whatever other day of judgement he’s aiming for.

My Process

This lab combines conversation, writing, and sharing as we move through the elements of a feature-length screenplay. This is not a workshop model where everyone reads each other’s screenplays and gives notes and reactions. Instead, I will guide the group through conversations and writing prompts that help writers explore, develop and write/revise as much of their screenplay as possible over our six weeks together.

The Lab is designed to be useful no matter the stage of your project, but you’re responsible for setting your own personal, realistic goal for these six weeks. Examples range from revising a previously completed screenplay to completing a first draft to completing a thorough scene-by-scene outline. I’m happy to help you in determining such a goal.

As we near the first session, I’ll be in touch with some ideas and assignments to set you up to succeed, but the most important tool for a writer is time. Regardless of how busy you are, I recommend scheduling at least 10 hours of writing time between sessions to fully immerse yourself in the work.

On this recent episode of my smash hit, WALKING THE DOG AND GIVING THE WRITING TIPS, I found myself talking about Bad Guys.

Before I go any further, I must apologize to all the amazing female baddies for the gendered language in Bad Guys. Women can obviously be just as murderously terrifying as men — take Kathy Bates, one of cinema’s truly great maniacs in MISERY. And now that I think of it, I was scared shitless when the villain in Friday the 13th turned out to be not only a woman but a MOTHER! How could she?? I was young enough to be fully surprised by the reveal and it actually gave me nightmares.

The Villain Plot

When I talk to people about villains, I tend to emphasize the need to have a clear Villain Plot driven by clear Tangible Wants. Your villain is going to have a direct impact on the Stakes of the story because if your Villain is prepared to wreak havoc then your story is at risk of descending into havoc (in a good way).

And obviously your Protagonist’s actions will be impacted by the Villain Plot because they’re acting to defeat the villain. Sounds like pretty obvious stuff, but sometimes we can get tied up in our story’s profound themes and brilliant details and miss the forest for the trees. (Note: I don’t actually know if that metaphor fits but it felt right.)

No Country

One of my favorite bad guys is Anton Chigurh played by Javier Bardem and his haircut in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.

Since the Oscars were last night, I’ll mention that the movie won four Oscars in 2008: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Bardem (and his haircut). I only touched on Chigurh during my dog walk and so I felt the need to expand.

The Coen’s films are some of my favorites, FARGO and NO COUNTRY in particular. They’ve directly inspired some of my own screenplays including TOXIC which currently has Daisy Ridley attached to star. (Note: name drop to validate my work and existence.)

Chigurh embodies what I love about the Coen brothers. Not only do they ‘get weird’ (one of my tips for writers), but they manage to make me feel things. When Anton’s character appears onscreen, I feel a low-grade dread. The anticipation is palpable — I know somebody’s gonna get hurt or killed in some horribly exciting way.

And take note: he’s not some mustache twirling Dick Dastardly or raging maniac. Instead, he’s quiet. He’s calm and certain. It’s more like he’s operating from a cold, cosmic logic you don’t fully understand. He’ll flip a coin and let you live or he won’t, and either way he sleeps fine. His mysterious rules kinda make me lean in, like I’m trying to figure him out. But when I lean in, I get closer to him, and nobody should be close to Anton Chigurh.

I should mention that Chigurh didn’t spring from the Coen brothers’ imagination; he came from Cormac McCarthy’s 2005 novel of the same name. McCarthy wrote Chigurh with typical bleak, spare prose. There are no long interior monologues explaining him, no backstory. He arrives fully formed, unhurried, and completely without apology.

The Coen brothers were famously faithful to the book, lifting whole passages of dialogue directly onto the screen. So while they deserve all the credit for directing the film, Cormac McCarthy certainly birthed Chigurh.

American Villains

Americans currently have a front row seat to one of the great villains of all time. He too has an unmistakable head of hair, and his skin is a toxic shade of orange. His behavior is shocking yet consistent in its narcissism. I once wrote about him as a perfect TV character, but now I see him more as a sociopathic villain, a villain with a brain so broken he seems to barely recognize his surroundings.

One of the most frightening things about this villain is the darkness that surrounds him, the darkness in which an entire cabinet of villains live and thrive as they lobby for, pursue, and achieve their own inhumane goals.

We’re drowning in villains right now — as inhumane as any fictional villain ever created. Even more evil than what I would recommend to a writer. Chigurh aside, I usually like to see some humanity in my villains, lest they be too cartoonish and impossible to relate to. But the people running and ruining this county are killing people on our streets and around the world in ways that make them nearly unrecognizable as fellow humans.

For Pete Hegseth to show the humanity I recommend to writers, he would have to go from that podium of his to the birthday party of any one of his seven children and sob for forgiveness while his kid blew out the candles.

Or maybe he could hide in the stall of a Wendy’s bathroom as if it were a church confessional and punch himself in the face until he broke his own nose. Then maybe I could relate to him as a human being. I wouldn’t forgive him, mind you — some things are unforgivable — but I would at least recognize the conflict that sits at the heart of so many humans and well-crafted characters.

You know Arthur Fleck? The Joker from JOKER? He doesn’t want to rob banks or take over the city; he wants to be seen and acknowledged. He wants connection, recognition, and some basic dignity in a city that has systematically ignored, humiliated, and discarded him. He’s one of the more sociopathic villains we’ve seen on the big screen and yet he displays more humanity than the people who run our government.

Your Villains

When you’re writing your Villains and Antagonists, your Bad Guys and your Bad Women, be just as original and holistic as you are when developing your protagonists. Give them Clear and Tangible Wants. Get Weird. Be Surprising. Give them Secrets. And when all else fails, give them a funny haircut.

Does it mean you should write while wet and in the nude? Again, perhaps.

In this week’s explosive episode of WALKING THE DOG AND GIVING THE WRITING TIPS, I share a tidbit from the world of neuroscience to encourage you to step away from the desk and enjoy the writing process in other ways. I was recently hired to consult on a feature screenplay. To pull back the curtain on the mysterious world of story consulting, I’ll share with you the opening paragraph of my notes here and the closing paragraph at the end of the post:

I’m a fellow writer so I can understand how getting notes can be a loaded experience. I know a lot of time and effort went into this draft. and I always start by saying I recognize, appreciate, and respect that. Last week’s gig came to me through a producer I’ve known for years who’s working with a less experienced writer. She had the brilliant idea to get fresh eyes on his draft before doing his next pass. Hence, me, Bill Gullo.

I know a lot of the followers and readers of Storytellers Social Club are writing, have written, or are thinking about writing a story—whether a feature screenplay, short screenplay, novel, short story, memoir, graphic novel…and on and on.

I’ll share a post soon about How to Work with me, Bill Gullo, but if you have a story you’re trying to develop, revise, or get out of your head you should know that I do quite a lot of story consulting in between my walks with Percy. My clients range from novelists to filmmakers to organizations to anyone with a story to tell.

How to Revise

Here’s the final paragraph to last week’s client. It’s also the advice I give everyone who is preparing to revise a finished manuscript.

At this stage, I always put the draft aside and buy a new notebook. I revisit and define the turning points and arcs for each character. I take a helicopter view to identify everyone’s tangible wants and emotional needs and the resulting arcs. I commit to a North Star for each character and then I march them through the plot following their Tangible Wants. I don’t read the script which only keeps me in the same pattern of thinking and keeps me married to ideas that might not work. I hope this is insanely helpful.

After trying it a few times, I found a way to make the practice my own by coining the phrase This Time/Next Time. I describe it in this video—during my treacherous dog walk with Percy and a hot coffee.

I love sharing this tool—this phrase, this habit, this mindset—with fellow writers. It’s been invaluable to me as I’ve juggled multiple projects, jobs, and children over the years. Like when you suddenly lose your job or a beloved family member dies. Or like when innocent Iranian children are killed by American and Israeli bombs. Children who had no choice and no voice in their sudden, horrific, violent deaths. Children who were torn apart and crushed by our tax dollars.

The only Writing Tip that came to mind on this dog walk was to try to feel things. Numbness is the enemy of creative expression and humanity writ large. Now, this might sound dangerously close to empathy, and as the assassinated monster, Charlie Kirk once said:

“I can't stand the word empathy, actually. I think empathy is a made-up, new-age term that… does a lot of damage.”

If Charlie were alive today, I wonder which he would say does more damage: empathy or the Guided Bomb Unit and Massive Ordnance Penetrator (GBU-57 series MOP), a 30,000-pound, 20.5-foot-long “bunker buster“ bomb developed by Boeing. I guess we’ll never know.

I have been thinking about empathy in new ways though. Ever since my friend had a guest on her show who believed empathy is meaningless without action. That idea struck me as so truthful I was surprised I hadn’t heard it before. I went on to explore the idea and learned that I was behind on the curve on this one. Hot shots like Jesus and the Dalai Lama believed the same thing: compassion is not enough—we have to act. It’s bumper sticker good.

So maybe Kirk’s quote was part of a longer conversation referencing this idea. I don’t know, and I don’t much care because:

1. this post is not about him, and

2. he said so many horrible things that, unlike a lot of commentators including Ezra Klein who said Kirk was “practicing politics the right way”, I don’t care if he occasionally said something interesting or useful. That’s a little like letting the Big Bad Wolf in the door because he gave you a great recipe for pulled pork.

As writers and humans and dog walkers, I hope we can all agree to slow down and feel something during this time of death and destruction in Iran. It’s a low bar, but I know that’s where a lot of people are at. I know I will have conversations in the coming days in which people will shake their head or sigh or curse about what’s happening. But it’s a stretch for a lot of us to access feelings - emotions - about such things.

There are real people who are terrified right now, real people weeping as real people are dying. So regardless of any benefits that come from the ouster of an authoritarian leader, I will try to honor the dead and dying by turning my empathy into action. I will move a little slower and more mindfully, I will try to be a little more kind to the people I encounter today, and as usual, I will write.

In 2012, I started a blog on Tumblr called The Bliss Archive. The idea was to provide a place for people to reflect upon and share personal moments of ‘bliss’: those rare, fleeting moments that make us feel elevated, out of body, and happy to be alive—moments that make you feel small and big at the same time. I’ve always paid attention to and cherished these moments.

I suppose these are the moments that can lead to artistic expression, but I’ve never felt a deep personal connection to the word art, and I see these moments as bigger and more universal than any single piece of art.

To me, moments of bliss are the happy accidents of being alive—mysterious moments to appreciate for balancing out the unlucky moments. Here’s one somebody shared:

In college there was a night where one of my best friends and I stumbled home from a late night. But instead of taking the usual route, we decided to only use backyards to get home. We snuck through several yards and very quickly we morphed into two children playing soldier, creeping up to make sure the coast was clear and sprinting to the next line of cover. Like little kids we were filled with adrenaline and giddiness. While we had a good time out that night the trek home had become the real adventure and journey. And in a moment of clarity and pause, we hid in the shadows, almost home. The night was still and quiet and looking up revealed an upstate New York sky perfectly clear with the stars. We marked the exhilaration of the excursion with a mental time stamp: Remember this night when we are older, when we have children and jobs and responsibilities. Even though one of us still refuses to get a job, we remember that night and with recall we can transfer ourselves back to that brief moment of youthful bliss.

BLISS & GOD

I sometimes say these moments represent my definition of God and explain my hesitation when I’m asked if I’m a believer. I take no stock in the patriarchal, corrupt, hypocritical ways of organized religion, but moments of bliss feel God-adjacent to me; they provide a glimpse at something bigger than the tangible me out there, and I like that.

I don’t care about the actual word ‘God’ or god or G-d, anyway. It’s obviously a meager attempt to put language to something bigger than language, and it too often gets confused or corrupted. Not to mention that in America most people equate the word with…wait for it…a bearded guy in the sky.

BLISS & DRUGS

Plenty of us find a version of bliss by choosing from the large menu of drugs available in pharmacies and back alleys, but for me, the most memorable and powerful moments have been natural ones. Like this one someone posted on The Bliss Archive:

The times I’ve encountered whales have been the most spiritual moments of my life. I cried each time. Once I sat in an aluminum dinghy in Kauai, tagging along on a Humpback whale song research trip. We sat in the 10 foot boat in a lagoon, with about 5 humpbacks surfacing and diving around us. Any one of them could have sent our boat flying. I looked one in the eye. Once I kayaked in a bay in Homer, Alaska, and a killer whale came along to wave at us, there were otters and seals there too. 8 months ago, I gave birth to my son. I brought photos of humpbacks swimming with their newborn calves as focal points. To birth like a whale was what I hoped for. If I have to die one day, let my heaven be an endless swim with the whales, and let the mermaids flirt with me.

BLISS & SURPRISE

These moments often carry a certain element of surprise like the time I was walking in New Orleans one night when I suddenly looked up—almost as if someone had tapped my shoulder—and found a full moon looking me right in the eye. She lightened my mood by reminding me I was small in comparison. This moment inspired me to write a short story which I adapted into a short film years later—The Ignorant Bliss of Sun and Moon. I’ll share more about the short story and the film another time.

BLISS & WRITING

When I launched The Bliss Archive, I was particularly interested in people writing about these experiences. As much as I enjoy a pic of a majestic sunset or a cross-eyed puppy, I didn’t want to create another place for people to share images reflexively labeled as blissful. I’m biased because of my background as a writer, but part of the point was to slow down enough to write about an experience, to articulate the bliss with words—something the culture doesn’t encourage.

BLISS & SCIENCE

Now, it turns out the brainy neuroscientists can provide a physical explanation for bliss. Apparently there’s a thing called…check this out: THE BLISS MOLECULE!

Anandamide (”The Bliss Molecule”): Named after the Sanskrit word ananda (bliss), anandamide is an endocannabinoid that binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain. It is released during activities like running (contributing to “runner’s high”) and is considered a key mediator of internal bliss.

The nerds might have made bliss less mysterious but not less valuable. I don’t care what you call it or where these moments come from—I’m just glad they occur. I appreciate anything that helps humans recognize we’re not the center of the universe.

BLISS & NOW

The bliss comes less often than it used to. Whether it’s age or stress or the state of our increasingly inhumane culture, I struggle to get outside my body like I used to—to feel joy like I used to. But as I like to say to the children—fuck it—I’m gonna keep trying.

It can be hard as hell, but I want to say yes to myself without overthinking—without allowing my thoughts to get carried along on preexisting neural pathways, like a log flume that ends in a cerebrospinal pool of self-doubt, insecurity, and inaction. In other words, I want to say fuck it—the empowering fuck it, not the nihilistic fuck it.

This reminds me of a screenplay I wrote years ago at the start of my surreal log flume ride into the entertainment industry. Despite having no relationships or interest in the industry, I found myself with a director, a producer, and a financier attached to the script before it all went to shit during casting because—what’s the plural of man-child? Whatever it is, there were too many of them involved in the project.

In the pre-production phase of that project, I explained to the director that the emotional arc of the damaged teenager at the heart of the story went from: ‘fuck it—we’re all gonna die’ to ‘fuck it — we’re all gonna die.’ The first fuck it coming from a place of trauma and cynicism, and the second fuck it came from a place of bliss and freedom. I loved that kid and that story that I created out of thin air, but unfortunately a man-child has it and you know they’re not good at giving things back.

So fuck it — I’m gonna make little videos in which I share tips and thoughts about writing while I walk my very brown dog, Percy.

Then I’m gonna get a dog food company to sponsor the videos so I can improve my ability to pay my rent and support my family. My hope is to partner with a company that makes a healthy, cruelty-free product, but if I have to I’ll settle for Kibbles ‘n Bits which uses corn, artificial flavors, and apparently has faced recalls for contaminants like euthanasia drugs.

But baby’s gotta get paid.

Besides, it’s about time I used one of the few remaining parts of my day to do even more unpaid work. The social media platforms (yes, you Substack) will be pleased that I've volunteered even my dog walk to get more people engaged with their billion-dollar platforms. Now that I think of it, I’m surprised I haven’t seen someone broadcasting from their bathtub or on their toilet. Hmmmmm….stay tuned.

But let's revisit this for a moment:

Millions of people, myself included, freely share their ideas, their faces, their savvy in building an audience with media platforms that generate billions of dollars by designing ways to addict us to that content.

What's the plural of Evil Genius? Oh, that one's easy.

I’m wondering now…

Here we are together, dear reader—just you and me—and I’m wondering: Do you have something in your life to which you want to say fuck it? I imagine we all do.

What is it? And just as importantly, what stops you from saying it?

In my writing workshops we explore this question as a matter of character and plot and growth. For example, it’s incredibly valuable to know what your characters’ dreams are—the ones pursued and the ones deferred. Similarly, what does your main character wish they could say fuck it to? That is good information for storytelling.

And if you are the main character in the story of your life—which I believe you are—what are your dreams deferred? What is the growth you need? What are the actions you need to take in order to be as free and joyful as you can be?

Brooklyn Meet Ups

These have been a bright spot in my little life. In a nutshell: since April 2025, I’ve been throwing parties every 6 weeks or so by inviting creative professionals to hang out, talk shop, and see what happens. The vibe is ‘social first’ with the professional networking as the subtext to a good hang.

I invite people from all storytelling disciplines so our attendees include the obvious (fiction writers, filmmakers, journalists) but also folks who are not always defined as storytellers (actors, musicians, grant writers, cinematographers, producers). It’s a good time!

Last night we welcomed a live events producer, an artist who works with glass, and a video game designer. Humble brag: we also welcomed a NYT Best-Selling Novelist and the co-founder of . There are a lot of talented people around here.

It’s an ecosystem for all creatives who touch the world of storytelling while not being a narcissist or a boob. So the conversations are excellent.

What is Success?!

Humble brag: a young woman told me last night that the previous meet up was the best party she’d been to since arriving in NYC last year. I’ll take it!

While I’d be happy to measure the success of this ecosystem by that one comment, there are exciting and real and tangible and intangible successes to share.

• This week I learned that one of our members (a theater professional) is going to start teaching theater workshops at a non-profit run by two actors who have been coming to the social club since it launched.

• Last month I learned that one of our actor-members who performed at our Storytellers Showcase in October took inspiration and confidence from that experience to further develop the piece and was doing a reading of it at the New York Theater Workshop (NYTW). He told me if it hadn’t been for the Showcase, he wouldn’t have leaned into the project as much as he has.

• And to repeat one of my favorites: a filmmaker got his documentary featured on NY1 after a conversation that led to being introduced to an on-air journalist who took an interest in the work.

Where is all this going?

Storytellers Social Club seems to evolving toward three major elements.

• this Substack space - the newsletter along with accompanying workshops, etc

• in-person meet ups

• a podcast slated for March (unless I fail) which will be hosted on a separate website and pushed here and there and everywhere.

There’s so much more to share, but I have to go because I’m finishing a new screenplay. Here are the next steps on that:

I send it to my manager today then polish it next week so it can then be released to the world like a dove that’s been twisted and beaten into the approximate shape of a dove in hopes that people will love the dove. Love the dove, world.

Here’s a description of the screenplay:

HOUNDS is about a desperately-broke family man who’s lured into being hunted on a sprawling tech campus for a huge payday so the company can capture unique data from someone being hunted. As the hunt progresses, he gradually learns the full purpose of the hunt, the real identity of the hunter, and that his family has become part of the experiment. It’s a near-future adaptation of The Most Dangerous Game and shares DNA with Ex Machina, Westworld, and Squid Games.

The movie cost Fox $5.2 million, won five Oscars, and bombed so spectacularly that producer Darryl F. Zanuck forbade anyone from mentioning it in his presence for years. If Zanuck was sitting next to me now, I would mention the shit out of it because he deserves to be reminded that he championed this propaganda piece disguised as a movie.

It’s rare that a movie raises my ire because:

1. it’s just a fucking movie.

2. I believe it’s hard to make a good one.

But I disliked this film so much that it led to me spending more time reading and writing about it than when I watched Citizen Kane. Perhaps it was my survival instinct; perhaps Wilson was so bad I found it dangerous and therefore wanted to pay extra attention to it, to linger on it like pressing a bruise.

In some ways, it’s hard to believe this clunker was made after Citizen Kane, like once someone made a movie as good as Kane it would somehow be impossible to make one as bad as Wilson.

For what it’s worth, the film follows Woodrow Wilson from his days as Princeton president through his two terms in the White House, focusing on his noble fight for the League of Nations—an international peacekeeping organization that the U.S. Senate, led by the “villainous” Republican Henry Cabot Lodge, refused to join.

It's a reverent, two-and-a-half-hour propaganda piece. Despite the filmmakers' portrayal of him as an astutely moral liberal professor who always has the best intentions, fights corruption, champions peace, and tragically suffers a stroke while barnstorming the country to sell his vision of a better world, he was in fact a rabid racist. Here are just some of the historical facts the film leaves out:

• He was raised in the Confederacy and his parents owned slaves.

• As president of Princeton, he refused to admit Black students.

• He segregated the federal government—the first time such segregation existed since Reconstruction.

• His administration fired Black federal employees who protested segregation.

• Wilson wrote a five-volume history textbook that romanticized the Confederacy and praised the Ku Klux Klan, writing that Reconstruction placed southern white men under “the intolerable burden of governments sustained by the votes of ignorant negroes.” SPOILER: that line didn’t make the screenplay.

• He screened The Birth of a Nation— D. W. Griffith’s film that glorified the KKK—at the White House in 1915, making it the first film ever shown there. Woodrow was even quoted on the title cards of that film:

The film mentions none of this. Instead, Knox’s Wilson talks about “all races working together”—dialogue that would have been unthinkable from the actual man. His vision of “democratic equality” applied only to white people. And yet, check out this clip. It’s funny — depending on your mood.

I can imagine this scene occurring in one of Woodrow Wilson's actual dreams—as how he saw himself. I suspect he, like all presidents, saw himself as a heroic man, making the world a better place. But I also suspect the guy had so many blind spots he was bumping into The Resolute Desk daily.

Propa-fuckin-ganda

I want to minimize how many times I ask my fingers to type—and my readers to read—the name D—ump. The Oscar Project aims to be a good time, and it's hard to have a good time when there are predators nearby. But if the topic is propaganda, it would be dishonest to omit the comparison. Lamar Trotti won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Wilson, but the movie white-washed the shit out of an American president, and none of us should tolerate propaganda at this time in American history.

I started writing this piece a few days after Renee Good was shot and killed by ICE agent Jonathan Ross. Renee was in her car at the time after having dropped her 6 year old son off at school. She was 37 years old and suffered four gunshot wounds: two in the chest, one in the forearm, and one in the head. It seemed her last words were, “I’m not mad at you, dude.” She was smiling when she said it.

Shortly after Renee was killed, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem claimed that Good had committed “an act of domestic terrorism.” Vice President JD Vance labeled the event “classic terrorism” and insinuated that protesters are engaging in “domestic terror techniques.” Shameful words from people in power who have no interest in the truth.

I returned to finish this piece — with a pit in my stomach — hours after a group of ICE agents beat, shot, and killed Alex Jeffrey Pretti, firing 10 or more bullets at him within five seconds. Alex was an intensive-care nurse. Video footage from the day shows him stepping between a woman and an agent who was pepper spraying her. Like Renee, Alex was 37 years old. It has not yet been reported how many bullets riddled his body.

Hours after Alex was killed, top White House advisor Stephen Miller claimed that Pretti was a “domestic terrorist” who “tried to assassinate federal law enforcement“. Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino stated “this looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement.” More shameful words from people who have no interest in the truth.

And as if we needed any more clarity on the situation, the names of the dead are Good and Pretti. Sometimes the truth forces itself on us.

Choices Are Everything

Wilson reminds us of something crucial about storytelling: every choice matters and omission is a choice. I suspect Zanuck and screenwriter Lamar Trotti chose to erase Wilson’s racism because they were making a wartime morale film, not a biography. Or perhaps they simply knew that audiences don’t want to see bald racism in a president. I mean, even racist audiences know that a hero isn’t supposed to be racist.

I don’t know if Wilson had an impact on popular opinion or the history books, but it too was offered to the world by people who have no interest in the truth. I was curious about the critical response when it was released and found this comment by Pulitzer Prize winning writer James Agee:

…Hollywood took a character and a theme of almost Shakespearian complexity and grandeur, and reduced the character to an astutely played liberal assistant professor of economics.

We crave the same thing today—simplicity. On our movie screens, in our news feeds, and on our bloody streets—we flatten complex humans to create heroes or villains who we can idolize, criticize, or even kill.

Nuance is harder to write, harder to sell, harder to understand, harder to fit into a two-hour runtime or a viral clip. But nuance is where the truth lives, and if a storyteller is not interested in truth—messy, uncomfortable, inconvenient truth—then they’re not really interested in storytelling. They’re interested in propaganda.

Years ago, I visited the Holocaust Museum in Battery Park and was appalled by how holistic and thorough the Nazi propaganda was. I remember the grotesque antisemitic posters and a cheery child's board game in which players would gather the 'Jew' game pieces and move them outside the city walls.

Hitler’s Propaganda Minister, Joseph Goebbels, understood that "…propaganda must evoke the interest of an audience and must be transmitted through an attention-getting communications medium". We're not experiencing a holocaust, but the propaganda coming from our government is certainly designed to be attention-getting, and people are being beaten, detained, deported, and killed in its shadow.

See? I told you it was hard to have a good time when predators are near. These fuckers are getting in my way of writing a light-hearted yet thoughtful reflection on a terrible film.

Up Next: Marie-Louise

My next Oscar Project post will focus on Marie-Louise, a Swiss German- and French-language film written by Swiss screenwriter Richard Schweizer. It was the first foreign language film ever to win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. That’s legitimately interesting! I can’t guarantee to keep Nazis out of the post though because the film tells the story of a young girl in France in 1942 who disappears in the turmoil of WWII.

4,000 Years of Resolutions

I’m not one for new year’s resolutions since I make resolutions every day (yes, it’s exhausting), but this year I got to wondering about the origin of the tradition. Unless the internet is wrong yet again, the practice of resolutions started about 4,000 years ago when the ancient Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year (which began in mid-March) to return borrowed objects and pay debts. They believed keeping these promises would earn the gods’ favor for the coming year and help them lose weight, go to the gym more, and finally start a writing practice.

Little did they know their annual ritual would evolve into a longstanding tradition in which people would make vague, unrealistic promises to themselves only to fail by the second Friday in January, which some have dubbed “Quitter’s Day” in order to rub salt in our wounds.

It turns out our resolutions haven’t changed much over the years. Despite whatever is going on in our culture — wars, civil unrest, financial upheaval — humans keep resolving the same things: exercise more, lose weight, save money, and eat healthier—proof that we really are a shallow, narcissistic bunch. Our list of resolutions rarely includes commitments to helping the poor or giving more massages to our romantic partners.

The good news is that researchers have found that the “fresh start effect” does have some power. Milestones on the calendar — New Year’s, birthdays, Mondays — can help people psychologically distance themselves from past failures and feel motivated to start fresh. Hangovers seem to have a similar impact, resulting in resolutions to stop drinking and embarrassing ourselves that last until sundown.

The Stroke of Midnight

Lord knows I like to have a good time, but in recent years, I can’t shake the fact that New Year’s Eve is an arbitrary social construct. I do enjoy that the holiday has two mascots — an old guy and a baby — but the stroke of midnight often leaves me feeling like a trained seal applauding for another glass of champagne.

What about you?

I’m curious—what are you thinking about at the end of this year? How will you feel when the clock strikes midnight? Will you be where you want to be? Doing what you want to be doing? Standing next to people who make sense to you?

Careful, if you linger too long on these big questions, the answers might trigger dramatic life changes or at least force you to bury the answers until January 1, 2027.

If you’re a storyteller, though, you have another choice: you can hand the questions off to your characters and explore their inner conflicts, bold choices, exciting failures, and occasional rebirths without doing a thing to change your own life. For me, the joys of storytelling exist at the intersection of my personal truths and my imagination.

Wondering if you should quit your job and change careers? Give that crisis to your protagonist and see what they do. Questioning whether you somehow got your sexual preferences wrong since puberty? No problem — hand the confusion off to your hero and watch them explore the options.

Ideally you’ll make it to your death bed in relative peace, but remember you can always give that peace to your characters if all else fails!

Social Club Round Up ~ 2025

One of my superpowers is my ability to minimize my accomplishments. You might doubt this since I just claimed to have superpowers, but I’ll trust that you trust me.

In the name of not minimizing while, god forbid, not maximizing, I’ll review some of my 2025 accomplishments in the most universally satisfying form of communication—the bullet point list.

• Oh yeah, I’m a screenwriter: I recently mentioned that I had one project being considered by financiers and one that is currently out to actors. January will bring news of both projects but will also be a time when my manager is sharing new material—two features and a pilot—with THE INDUSTRY (is that just Netflix now?). 2025 has been unsettling and upsetting, right? At this point, we’ve all agreed — no matter the generation, race, gender, class, or political affiliation — that life on earth has been super weird, and a lot of people don’t feel awesome.

As we move into a new year that will be dense with inhumane madness sponsored by Big Tech and Old Politics, I would like to encourage us all to be humane despite whatever personal strain and hardships we’re suffering.

And while we’re at it, let’s invest in an anti-numbness campaign. I suspect we’ve brainwashed ourselves by endlessly describing our emotional state as numb. I believe we can still feel things.

This is one of the many things stories are good for. Whether they come in the form of fiction, nonfiction, film, TV, spoken word, music, dance — stories provide us with some blessed distance from so-called ‘real life’ which lowers our defenses so we can feel things we might not otherwise feel.

As the end of the year approaches, I’ve been asked to share one of my most popular and pragmatic posts on how to become a professional writer. The topic demands substantial examination, so buckle in for an astonishing 1,500 words.

First, it’s worth asking, why are humans so drawn to writing in the first place?

Some very smart people with advanced degrees say writing evolved from our capacity for symbolic thought. Take the middle finger—that ancient Greek and Roman phallic insult—or cave paintings, where less obese versions of us recorded events and shared complex ideas. Over millennia, such visual symbols evolved to become the writing systems we use today to manipulate, deceive, troll and insult each other.

If you need more proof of the human impulse to write, look no further than Substack where people spend countless hours on the platform in hopes of getting subscribers to not only read but pay them for their words. Experts are still studying whether Substack is a pyramid scheme, but people seem to be enjoying themselves, so let’s leave it alone.

Point is, if you were to combine the people who actively write with the people who wish they were writing, you’d have the majority of humanity lined up. And so, to serve these literary masses, I’ve outlined TEN KEY STEPS that will help anyone achieve their dream of becoming a tooth-grinding, anxiety-ridden writer.

1. WRITE

You'd be surprised how many aspiring writers neglect to do the thing they talk about incessantly: write. Research shows the most important step in becoming a professional writer is writing. If you find yourself talking about writing more than writing, flip the script — although you'd have to write a script before you can flip it. Point is, your bestselling beach read inspired by your sexy plumber won’t write itself.

One remarkable fact about writing is that while nearly everyone finds it difficult, nearly anyone can do it. Even Jean-Dominique Bauby, the real person on whom The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was based, wrote by blinking through the alphabet to a nurse while suffering from locked-in syndrome. Dear reader, if he can blink out a book, you can write one using your fingers. Although, to be fair, he was paralyzed, so had nothing else to do.

2. GET OUTSIDE THE BOX

You have many options here, but the goal is to discover your own way to a fresh perspective on this ‘reality’ most people have agreed upon. You could drink to excess, take drugs, do hot yoga, climb high places, or dance at funerals. As someone who has pickled his brain once too often, I don’t encourage alcohol as a means to artistic productivity or enlightenment, but I do know some of the earliest stories would not have been written if it weren’t for cocktail napkins and coasters.

To be honest, the box of reality is pretty small in this buttoned-up, commercial culture so it doesn’t take much to step outside it. I once wore a pair of red sunglasses to my nephew’s soccer game in Lexington, KY and was looked at like I just stepped off a private plane emblazoned with the word Hollywood. Granted they were women’s sunglasses, but still.

3. SURVIVE

Avoid overdoses, alcohol poisoning, falling from high-up places, gunfire and getting hit by a bus. Despite Jean-Dominique Bauby’s success, long hospital stays and death often present nearly insurmountable obstacles. There is the option of posthumous success, but it’s much colder and less gratifying than succeeding while alive. I’ve survived long enough to write this post, but there’s no telling what’s next.

4. MATURE

If you manage to survive long enough, try the act of maturing. For children, maturation comes with an increase in height, weight and the ability to grip a pencil. Adults mature in less visible ways, mostly in their hearts and minds if they’re lucky. When adult writers mature, they remove their heads from between their buttocks which allows them to see that their stories should be about the wider world and not their intestines. The new location of your head will also allow you to build your professional network. You can refer to my non-viral post, How to Network in 3D, for further details about networking and what to do when someone extends their hand to you in a seemingly friendly manner.

5. TURN OFF YOUR WIFI

Despite the allure of AI, it is not advised to allow robots to do work that presumably feeds the deepest part of you. The Roomba is one thing — who the hell wants to vacuum — but writing has the potential to be blissful and therapeutic. Sure you’re gonna noodle around with AI, but there’s a tipping point and the side effects include existential tics, depressed face, numb soul and suicidal caffeine intake.

6. BUILD A PROFESSIONAL NETWORK

Personally, I don’t like the word ‘networking’ because it makes me think of cold hard things with copper wires, but there is great value in having a human network made of flesh and blood individuals who, while they may not like you, will answer an occasional email, share a coffee, and if you manage to avoid creeping them out long enough, may even read your work. Some film and TV writers are hired not because of their exceptional writing but because they’re ‘easy to work with’ which often means they don’t show their frustration at the endless string of conflicting notes that result in a project being unrecognizable.

7. WEAR A MOUTHGUARD

Studies show that 94% of writers grind their teeth while the remaining 6% have trust funds. If you’re a writer, chances are you don’t have dental coverage, and if you do, it certainly won't cover the expense of putting crowns on your cracked teeth let alone full tooth extractions. I highly recommend good dental hygiene and daily meditation to all writers to avoid turning your teeth to dust.

8. SHARE YOUR WORK

At some point, you need to share your writing with other humans, otherwise your passion and hard work will be remarkably similar to the Unibomber’s. Be sure to give the reader a couple of weeks before checking back in, and when you do, try not to sound desperate, annoyed or enraged if they’ve not yet donated their limited personal time to read your brilliant work out of their kindness and generosity. Pro tip: one way to display your seriousness as a writer is to limit typos and to actually write well.

9. KEEP WRITING

If you follow these steps, your writing should improve if only because you can now see your keyboard more clearly with your head removed from your ass. Warning: this so- called improvement occurs approximately 8 years into the journey. You’ll recognize the moment because you’ve received some validation from the world. Perhaps you have published a story or article or acquired some representation or at least some legitimate close calls. In my case, I was blessed/cursed with validation when my screenplay Redmond won me $10,000 at a time when I had about a month’s rent in my bank account—blessed because it provided me with money and validation to keep writing; cursed because it provided me with money and validation to keep writing.

10. ACT NEWLY DANGEROUS

Once a writer has improved, they might choose to commit even further to the craft by quitting a day job which is undeniably a terrible and dangerous idea. Now they must excert more energy toward earning so-called money which may result in them writing more ‘marketable’ work especially if they are represented by salesman (referred to as agents) who advise on undefinable storytelling trends based on the most recent project that made the most money. It’s at this point that a writer will see they’ve gone far enough down the path they’re no longer sure what else to do with their lives. They might even start a Substack.

I hope this has been helpful in showing how you can transition from being a gainfully employed, mildly unsatisfied person to a tooth-grinding, desperate wreck of a professional writer.

For Real Though

I know getting started is hard. I was a teacher before I was a writer, so when I started writing, I simply practiced what I preached and embraced the writing process which mostly revolves around the understanding that your first try sucks.

If you truly want to write a novel or a screenplay or anything else, then please be kind to yourself and either do it or let it go. I mean, even illiterate people can write now thanks to transcription software, and you don’t want to be on your death bed when you realize you totally could’ve written that spicy beach read about your plumber.

I know Bing Crosby was a handsome, charismatic, talented guy, but I haven’t seen him in a while, so when he stepped into frame I was all flummoxed by his charismatic glow. And then I noticed my wife went deeply silent. Like she was somewhere-else silent. Somewhere else… with Bing!

There’s no denying it: Bing is hot as hell. I suppose I should know this, but I think I’ve been distracted by his overplayed Christmas carols like “White Christmas,” which have gotten a little sappy (bah, humbug).

And not only did Going My Way’s writers (Frank Butler and Frank Cavett) win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, Crosby won the Academy Award for Best Actor AND was nominated for its sequel, The Bells of St. Mary’s (1945), becoming the first of six actors to be nominated twice for playing the same character. (This is an official Oscar Project fun fact!)

In the clip below he manages to be both contrite and a badass—truly Oscar-worthy.

Going My Way

The film centers on Father Chuck O’Malley (Bing Crosby), an outrageously charismatic young priest who shows up at a New York parish that’s been run for ages by Father Fitzgibbon (Barry Fitzgerald).

Fitzgibbon has been quietly deemed too old for his responsibilities, even if no one says it out loud at first. The old priest is beloved, but he’s getting on in years—over the hill—too fucking old—and O’Malley has been sent to shepherd his transition into retirement and also replace him.

Stories & Secrets

When O’Malley arrives, nobody—including the audience—knows he’s there to shepherd the old priest’s transition, and the script does a good job of revealing the truth to various characters at different points in the story.

The best of those moments is when Father Fitzgibbon quietly puts together the truth himself in a wonderfully acted scene between Fitzgerald and Crosby.

I highlight secrets a lot in my posts because they’re so prevalent and powerful in storytelling. I find a character’s secrets so much more human, electric, and revealing than any online character questionnaire will ever be.

Timelessness in Stories

The story is ultimately about a timeless issue that’s notoriously difficult to face: recognizing when it’s time to step back, and how hard it is to accept that truth even when it’s obvious to everyone else. By leaning into this truth, Going My Way becomes a much deeper, more surprising film.

Thanks to strong writing and performances, the film presents a heart-wrenching portrait of what it feels like to outlive your professional usefulness. Fitzgerald’s performance captures Father Fitzgibbon’s dignity and pride, as well as his embarrassment and heartbreak around aging. As Crosby listens and navigates the situation, he radiates an empathy I wish we saw directed to our seniors in real life.

My Dad Was Old Once Too

During a heartbreaking scene in which Crosby and Fitzgerald talk about the realities of aging, I was reminded of when my brothers and I finally had to tell our father that he couldn’t drive his car anymore. It felt unfair—three strapping young men against one weakened 80-year-old—and I saw the realization land in my father’s eyes as his resistance melted in the face of our certainty that this was our decision, not his. Yes, it was heartbreaking, but also necessary for his and everyone else’s safety on the road.

Zombies in Power

So yeah, Going My Way speaks to a larger conversation: how institutions handle aging leadership, how an individual grapples with the loss of authority, and how complicated it is when legacy and identity are tangled up in a role you’ve held forever.

And of course, watching this now, I couldn’t ignore the larger topic of aging leadership—especially since we’ve had old white zombies shuffling around the White House and Washington in general for quite some time now.

Funny that our country simultaneously treats some senior citizens worse than our pets while electing others to run the country. Honestly, our last two presidents shouldn’t be behind the wheel, let alone behind on their bran intake.

I found myself wishing our government had a system in place that was as realistic and functional as the church leadership in Going My Way. Not a great sign when a movie from 1944 shows a church handling a leadership transition with more grace than Congress does in 2025.

Going My Way is more than just a warmhearted story about a charming, hot-AF young priest; it’s also a quietly emotional meditation on aging, relevance, and the grace required—from everyone involved—when it’s time for one generation to hand things off to the next.

In the end, the film is elevated because it sits in tensions we avoid every day. Movies really can teach us something—if we’re willing to linger in their questions a little longer.

Family Project

So if you need to have this conversation with your family, maybe you can boot up Going My Way over the holidays and spark an important dialogue. That’s one of the gifts of watching great movies together.

And if you happen to work in Washington D.C., perhaps you could get this into the queue of a dozen or so people in power who should be thinking about writing their memoirs and increasing their bran intake instead of clinging to power until they drop dead.

At one important turning point in the story, Bing sits at the piano and sings the old classic Swinging on a Star — except it wasn’t an old classic then. As a matter of fact the song was introduced to the world in this scene and won an Academy Award for Best Original Song that year. Read the lyrics by Johnny Burke, and be charmed:

Love

Writers tend to love their characters—that’s one reason many find it hard to torture them as much as they should.

But in my roles as story consultant, educator, and mentor, I occasionally encounter a character who is unloved by its creator. Instead, I find judgement or mockery in the unfortunate soul’s DNA, a result of the writer’s feelings toward that character.

Poor, sad character — if the writer doesn’t love the character, the audience never will.

So how can you learn to love a character?

2. Learn what’s broken in the character; learn what’s missing in them; learn what they’re secretly yearning for; learn who hurt them; learn their secrets and their regrets. Just as you love your flawed family members and friends, you can learn to love all of your characters even if they’re not the charming, witty, self-aware protagonist at the heart of your story.

I say learn rather than decide because, when you’re in the flow state, you’ll find the character already exists which means you’re getting to know them. And when you get to know someone, you’re more likely to empathize with them, perhaps even love them. The same goes for your characters.

GUTS

So many words have been written about writing, and I’m loath to parrot or trade in cliches even when they’re rooted in truth, which they often are.

I try to find ways to write and talk and teach about writing with a certain twist, an unexpectedness that helps break through the wall of words we encounter every day.

For example, on the subway this weekend I found my way to this advice about characters: Feel Them in Your Guts.

But, Bill Gullo, how do I feel my characters in my guts if I haven’t eaten them?

Well, I can’t promise you’ll ever feel them in your guts, but if you want to try I suggest you start by breathing. Yes, that’s right—you can breathe outside of your yoga class. In fact, some scientists believe if you don’t breathe you’ll eventually die.

But I’m talking about that juicy, deep breathing that occurs when you unplug from the fucking internet, relax your eyes and visit your story in your mind’s eye. When I do that I feel the character and the entire story ripple from my brain stem to my toes including my guts.

So many writers talk about frustration or followers or monetization or hooks or clicks; I’d like to hear more of us describe the process as a visceral experience, a holistic mind-body kinda thing that acknowledges the physical sensations during a writing session.

I won’t be asking for any downward dogs, but I’ll certainly start tomorrow’s workshop by getting us all to chat and relax a little in preparation for creating life.
