The month of May happens to be my favorite time of year because it’s thoroughly lilac time, and lilacs are my favorite flower. Why?

1. Because I have fond memories of smelling a giant lilac bush on the farm I grew up on in Wisconsin

2. Because they’re big time springtime harbingers and we can all sigh in relief that “we made it” past another winter

3. Because they’re so ephemeral. Their delicateness and short season make them a challenge for florists and perfumers alike. So we gotta enjoy them fully NOW before they fleet away again :,)

This past month I celebrated Sludge Season with some friends. It’s the festive new seasonal tradition we’re instating. I’ve included a primer on the season below, but it’s ever evolving. Let me know if you’d add anything to your list of Sludge Season essentials!

Everything you need to know about Sludge Season ❄️🤎❄️

Ethos: learning to love something that’s difficult to appreciate

Duration: Feb 2-Mar 22 (most auspicious day are Feb 2, Feb 22, and March 22)

Traditional Beverages:

-mudslides

-sludge milkshakes

Traditional Foods:

-Dirty sludge pudding (standard dirt pudding + coconut flakes to represent snow --- add various things like chocolate coins, chocolate rocks, gummy worms, candy cigarettes, syringes with jello shots, pretzel sticks (twigs), tootsie rolls (dog doo doo), and whatever else you may find as the snow melts to sludge

-Mashed potatoes dolloped into sludgey gravy

-Shaved ice dressed in lemon syrup

Traditional Art: melting snow pile guys (NOT manicured snowmen)

Traditional Music: sludge (the genre), slowed down sludgey versions of previously non-sludge songs, DJ Screw, etc

In mid-November, the day after I got back from my midwest/Poland travels, we at Angels rented a Uhaul and began our big move to a new studio in Providence at 11 Aleppo Street. I’ve been procrastinating putting together this newsletter ever since then, swamped underneath all the photos from Poland and the decisions about which ones I should include in my limited-space travelogue here. I hope you enjoy this selection! I saw so much family, art, and nature while there. It was all so surreal. What a world!

Proof of Life…

My new hobby is drawing on canvas with fabric markers! I also started a couple acrylic paintings on the same canvas, but those are still in the works. Not sure whether these will turn into anything aside from what they currently are. I do love their raw edges and simplicity, but maybe I’ll get into piecing them together into some sort of art quilt situation this winter. Nothing has been sounding cozier to me than having some sort of sewing project to do under my electric blanket during the long nights approaching.

Please enjoy these treasures I came upon at one of my favorite spots in Providence. I already did a fabric marker illustration based on the metal horse head (both pictured above) and am also going to use these as inspiration for some new tattoo flash so keep a look out for that!

Since I’ve been on the road a lot this past month I haven’t had time to delve into much made by others so instead I’m going to post some photos from traveling to tattoo in Philly and Portland, ME/Peaks Island!

I watched a lot of random stuff these month, but honestly, not much stuck with me. I did get to see the Hilma af Klint documentary Beyond the Visible, which I enjoyed simply because I love her art so much. The orbs in my August booking illustration are referenced from a few of her paintings in fact. Look at her paintings for a divine spiritual experience :)

Okay so I watched A New Love in Tokyo (1994) and read You Exist Too Much by Zaina Arafat and wanna talk about both! A New Love in Tokyo is a movie about two sex worker friends going about their daily life, working, going to theater club, being mischevious, doing puzzles, laughing, having fun, etc. It was delightful and the patina that movies from the 90’s have always transports me away in the best sense. You Exist Too Much is a book from 2020 about a queer Palestinian woman’s relationships and her time in a program for love addiction. The part where she reflects on her mom really stayed with me as I think about my own immigrant mother. That’s all I’ve got for now! See you next month!

This month I went to the Leonora Carrington exhibition at the Rose Art Museum in Waltham, MA. As a longtime fan of her surrealist art and writing it was an absolute dream come true to witness. One day I’d love to see the work of her friend and fellow surrealist Remedios Varo as well, but that’s a dream for another night. They were both inspired by tarot, alchemy, and all things magical and mysterious so if you’re into that don’t sleep on these baddies. The exhibit is up until the end of the month. Here’s a glimpse of her sketches and a weaving made of her drawing. Apologies for the glare!

Brianna Rose Brooks’ art has captivated me since I met them over a decade ago when they were a student at New Urban Arts while I was an artist mentor/shy guy haunting the screen printing zone. Big fan of theirs since day one! I was lucky enough to make it to NYC to see their most recent show, “Morning Pages” at RUBY/DAKOTA. Their drawings filled me with pure, palpable love! If you’re able to see their art in person it’s so worth it, but if you’re too far away to go then check out their art via their website!

Media rec time! Okay, so, I really looooooove looking at textile art! Weavings! Embroidery! Beading! Applique! Oh my! Tessa Perlow is an artist who embroiders and beads astrology and tarot inspired works, and you already know I adore the mystical and magical so this hits the spot for me. She posted a video of her making an 18th-century inspired top from old t-shirts. It’s more inspo rather than a step-by-step/how-to video, but still! Having stuff like this play in the background while doing your own creative tasks is quite soothing.

I hope you’ve been staying warm in the “new year.” I’ve been blasting the space heater at my toes while painting a lot in the last few weeks. The fruits of my labor will be offered up for sale at the Valentine’s Day Art Market we’re hosting at Angels on February 8th from 11am-3pm!

For awhile now I’ve been enjoying the video-essayist Contrapoints, and if you haven’t watched any of her videos, yet, I can’t recommend them enough! I say, go with your gut and start with one on any topic that calls to you. You truly can’t go wrong imho. The most recent video entitled Twilight is in fact about so much more then that very popular franchise. It’s merely the backdrop to a weaving tale of the philosophy of desire and so much more that justifies it’s 3-hour length.
