Remembering as Spiritual Practice: Prides through the Years

In 2022, I went to my first Pride. I was scared of anyone finding out. I wasn’t even out yet—either as affirming or as a queer human myself. I only had one semi-rainbow crop top, and I placed my St. Francis medal necklace like a familiar hug around my neck. Quietly, I encountered this fun festival, pleasantly surprised by all the art and joy. I felt at home.

In 2023, so much had changed in the year since my first Pride. I was out to a select few, and my best friend Jenn took me to my second festival. I wore rainbow butterfly hair clips and Pride flag earrings that I made myself. I had so much fun walking around and saying, “Happy Pride!” as a newly-out queer. I returned home covered in stickers and necklaces . . . and basking in joy.

In 2024, I went to Pride with Jenn again. It had been an exceptionally difficult year since the last Pride. Being out had had its consequences. Even still, friend by my side, I walked confidently past the angry protesters screaming out-of-context verses at me (a consummate Bible nerd and former pastor). Also, I held another thing in my heart that day: I was dating women for the first time. I wore a lavender flower crown I made to celebrate being the lavender menace I’d always been.

In 2025, I came to Pride with my partner Arie. We were going through so much, but we also loved each other so much. We had a wonderful time wearing our matching necklaces we bought for each other earlier that year. It was an act of resistance in the face of Project 2025.

In 2026, in some ways, every day in my life is Pride. While being out as queer and affirming is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, I wouldn’t take it back.

I’m grateful for my queer ancestors and all the ways they fought for my rights.

I’m grateful for all the amazing people who have stayed and come into my life since I’ve been out.

I pray that I can be the kind of ancestor my forebears were, shining a rainbow prism of love wherever I walk.

All I know is that the queer community and its allies have shown me the magickal care that I describe as a divine and spiritual.

I think Julian of Norwich was right: Love does hold up the universe. Amen and Amen.

As a child of the Satanic Panic, I have long had an interest in what scares us culturally and why. For a lot of the same reasons, I’m also a religious history nerd. Therefore, I’ve been looking for opportunities to talk about . . .

why that interest is a spiritual practice1 for me and
some too-often-forgotten parts of history that continue to impact us to this day.

And so, we begin our journey on religious moral panics centered on monsters. This will be a sort of monster mash, which includes…

a list of panics in the past and into the present (sorted by affiliated monsters),
links to accompanying free-to-watch documentaries/videos from a number of thorough (and often entertaining) journalists and historians,
discussion questions for journaling, conversation, reflection, etc.,
and trigger warnings throughout, as this stuff is fascinating but also heavy.

Chapter 1: The Myth of Witches in the Past

Let’s start with something light and fun: the history of the witch hat . . . in this delightful video by dress historian Abby Cox.

What I love about this documentary-ish piece is that it uses fashion to talk about the issues having to do with the fear of (and even the convoluted definition of) witches throughout history. For an even deeper dive on the historical factors at play with the fear of witches, check out Ronald Hutton’s The Witch: A History of Fear, from Ancient Times to the Present.

Chapter 2: The Myth of Vampires in the Past

We now turn our attention to vampires . . . and two historical panics surrounding them.

The first feature is a video from Caitlin Doughty—mortician, author, and death documentarian—in which she details America’s forgotten vampire panic in the 1800s.

(TW: blood, gore, death, corpses, spiritual abuse, etc.)

The second feature in this vampire panic section? A short video from PBS Origins about the ways vampires in literature and film have often stood in for a certain feared groups (hint: queer women and basically anyone that wasn’t white, cis, straight, or able-bodied).

(TW: horror imagery, homophobia, racism)

Discussion Questions for Both Vampire Panics:

What surprised you most about fear and vampires?
What surprised you about the intersections of vampires and Christianity (and religion in general)?
How would you define a vampire?

Chapter 3: Ghosts in the Past

For ghosts, we turn our attention to spiritualism in the 1800s—the good, the bad, the grift, the moral panic, and the intersections of justice, marginalization, science, spirituality, and grief. Once again, this section will feature the work of Caitlin Doughty—with two videos this time.

The first is about the spiritualism movement in general, and the second is about a very specific and fascinating grift abound ghosts during this time.

Chapter 4: Modern Monsters (1980s to present)

It’s easy to chuckle at people in the past. Surely we’re not as silly as ancient civilizations, Victorian prudes, or 1960s busybodies.

But here’s the thing: monster-tinged moral panics are a very human thing.

We must have empathy for the people in the past . . . for we are just as susceptible to turning fear into a monster myth, leading to actual violence against marginalized communities.

And that brings us to the Satanic Panic, which had quite a zeitgeist in the 1980s.

Below are two documentaries from the excellent Retro Report series about two major moments in the American Satanic Panic: D&D and rock music.

(TW: gore, suicide, casual sexism, racism)

But all of this brings us to closer to the present: Satanic Panic rhetoric continued to show up . . .

in the aftermath of Columbine (TW: school shootings, suicide, violence, insensitive media portrayals, homophobia, bullying)
in the panic I grew up hearing over the Harry Potter and Twilight books (despite their having religious, even conservative, overtones)
and most recently in QAnon conspiracy theories and book banning.

Moral panics are about control of ideas and people. They are a tool of fascism, and in my particular context, that means christofascism, which is defined as “the blending of authoritarianism and oneself’s interpretation and practice of evangelical Christianity,” in an excellent conversation about the topic between D.L. Mayfield and Carolyn Baker, who have both extensively researched and written about the topic.

But we don’t have to live in fear and discouragement. Moral panics can be best resisted by developing empathy and understanding. By studying history and seeing our connection to all—past, present, and future. By regulating our nervous systems instead of going after violence. By taking care of each other and seeing one another as humans, not as monsters to be feared or as scapegoats to excuse our support for corrupt and violent policies and systems.

We can resist moral panics. And for me, that work is a spiritual practice.

And deconstructing monster myths is a good place to start.

Chores as Spiritual Practice: Fighting Fascism One Dish at a Time

Despite being AFAB, I’ve never been good at domestic tasks. Reason? Some combo of intersecting executive dysfunctions, energy level deficits, and my socialization toward workaholism.

For me, after a lot of therapy, chores are a form of shadow work, forcing me to confront both the successes and the hard moments found in the mundane—inviting me to imperfect care that doesn’t bend to capitalistic expectations.

In chores, I care for myself and the world: a revolutionary act.

The deep inhale at rinsing a dish and the exhale of drying it. The gentle chopping of vegetables for a communal meal. The meditative nature of delicate laundry. The sacred practice of learning the ergonomics of holding a broom. The quiet care of picking up after your dog.

These tasks push back at capitalism. You want me to neglect what I have so I can buy more? You want me to be too tired to care for myself? You want to rob me of the joy of caring for myself and others in small ways? Well, I say, no, no, no.

There is magick in the intention of even the smallest act of care. We all can resist with these rhythms.

In the very act of self-care (or others-care), we interrupt injustice.

And for me, that knowledge makes the care tasks just a little less overwhelming.

A witch with a broom . . . er . . . vacuum.

Gratitude/Joy as Spiritual Practice: Things I Love about My Life as an Exvangelical

I won’t lie to you. Being an exvangelical is hard.

Being out and queer is hard.

Being neurodivergent and disabled is hard.

Living under christofascism in hard.

But the struggle against injustice is worth it.

In the midst of all the hard stuff, I want to reclaim gratitude.

No longer do I see it as I once did, as the proverbial broom to sweep things away (as evangelicalism so often encourages).

Instead, I see gratitude as a radical attentiveness toward joy.

Here are some of the things I’m grateful for:

I love meeting with authors and editors through my agenting work at Hyponymous, seeking to find homes for wildly curious manuscripts.

I love my esoteric plushie collection.

I love going on zany adventures with my partners and other found family.

I love reading my tarot cards and finding hope, renewal, and honesty there.

I love editing for Microcosm Publishing, Lake Drive Books, and the individual clients I see.

I love writing books and still have to pinch myself to believe it is real that I get to do this.

I love researching obscure bits and bobs and fashioning odd rituals within various frames.

I love prancing around in the tiny, gay kitchen that I share with my nesting partner, as rainbow fractals dance upon the cupboards, through the prism in our window.

I love my stepdoggo Tiggy, my sweet elderly toddler.

I love wearing clothes my nesting partner makes and thrifting/making intentional pieces myself, both forms of fashion magick.

I love being a secular-ish, witchy religion nerd, enlivened by interfaith cooperation, history, and ritual—and unconventional spirituality in general.

In short, I love finding and injecting whimsy, weirdness, and resistance into every inch of life.

That’s the blazing candle of gratitude I hold up in the hard moments.

For I still believe that Love holds up the universe.

Nervous System Regulation as Spiritual Practice: 6 More Tools to Fight Fascism

Over the years here at All The Threads, I’ve written a lot about nervous system regulation as a tool to fight fascism (here and here), which I first learned about through D.L. Mayfield at Healing Is My Special Interest.

Here are six tools that have been calming my nervous system lately—very much tinged with deconversion-centered, secular-ish practices:

Healing from religious trauma often involves exposure. Everything from painting my nails black to refashioning thrifted rosaries to having a little fun with a free printable (see below picture).

Spot the difference. If Jesus loves everybody, that means he loves . . .

Writing

Through it all, writing here has served as a way to regulate my nervous system, process big and little changes, and make sense of my feelings and thoughts about a life I’ve tried to imbue with resistance and whimsy.

That and making zines. (I’ve got a new one coming out with Microcosm! Separate from that, paid subscribers also get access to other random digital zines I’m working on.)

The Goatbook

About a year ago, I had a long-needed, partial-inpatient grippy socks vacation. While in treatment there, I got a Decomposition Notebook called “Goatbook,” which, as you can see from the picture, is literally a notebook with delightful goats on it.

I write down my therapy thoughts in this little journal and cross them off after they no longer pop up intrusively. I like to say, “I’ve gotta go tell the goats about this.”

In that same spirit, I procured a weighted goat that I love to snuggle. Their name is Thorne, and as you can see from the second picture, they are very down in the struggle against fascism!

Jewelry Spells as Spiritual Practice: Weaving Intention into My Days

I’ve written at length about how I view personal expression through fashion to be magick.1

And over the years, I’ve especially found thrifted and alt jewelry/accessories to be treasure troves of possibility and creativity.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been infusing intention into my jewelry/accessory choices—years before I knew what witchcraft was.

See the below gallery for details on what this looked like while growing up in a cult.

For a more fully realized picture of this practice, I’m also including a gallery of some of my favorite jewelry looks/spells over the past year or so. These choices reflect all kinds of things I seek to express, including strength, love, balance, boundaries, queerness, autonomy, creativity, anticonformity, healing, magick, liberation, secular-ish spirituality, and of course, whimsy and resistance.

I consider spells to be a form of visual—and often secular—prayer. Wordless wishes, haunting steps of faith over the altar of my heart. They say, “Change is possible. A better world is possible through intention and community care.”

TTRPGs as Spiritual Practice: On D&D and Moral Panics

Fear. That was the emotion undergirding so much of the Satanic Panic, which I grew up in the shadow of. One focus for that moral panic: TTRPGs, most especially D&D.

Christian fundamentalist radio drama Adventures in Odyssey, which fucking formed me, even had an episode about it called “Castles & Cauldrons,” which admittedly is a badass name.

Fast forward to 2018. I was taking tentative steps out of fundamentalism. A recent grad from a center-right Bible college, I had loved ones who played D&D and were also Christian.

So I watched a video about the game that changed my life and helped me learn about the costs of moral panics: Retro Report’s “Dungeons & Dragons: Satanic Panic,” a mini documentary covering the concerns people had about the game and the arguments for the game being, well, okay . . . and even a net positive for society.

In seeing the manufactured and flimsy case for the evils of D&D, my mind changed. I no longer saw the game as something to be feared. But it wasn’t until 2026—post-deconversion from christofascism—that I would join a campaign myself. And what wonder I beheld.

I sat around a table of people from diverse backgrounds—my queer self included—and through math and creativity, helped weave a story about adventure, teamwork, courage, and joy, all while playing Lark Rosebranch, a druid elf with a backstory of religious trauma.

It reminded me of the elaborate storylines I would create with other kiddos when I was young, while playing with Barbies, Webkinz, and Schleich animal figurines. In short, it was healing play and connection.

In our world rife with fascism, there is something revolutionary about D&D, which the Retro Report documentary touches on.

And whether you play D&D or not, may your days be full of play, joy, and connection.

And if that isn’t spiritual, divine, or magickal, I don’t know what is.

Welcome to new and old subscribers! It’s been a while since I introduced myself here at All The Threads, and it felt like time.

My name is Ivy Nyx Zeller (she/they)—disabled, neurodivergent, witchy, exvangelical, secular-ish, queer, cult survivor, and, ultimately, human.

I started All The Threads more than three years ago as a place to write about spirituality, creativity, and justice, as well as my experience with religious trauma.

Since then, this little corner of the internet has turned into a place where I discuss a weekly and random spiritual practice/ritual (usually based in what my current AuDHD hyperfixation is, haha).

In short, there are a lot of threads in my life, and I like to use all of them to talk about ritual.

I’m also an author, an editor, a zinester, and a literary agent.

Secular-ish Prayer as Spiritual Practice: Apocalypse and Juniper

A windstorm had whipped through our neighborhood, and on top of all that, money was tight, my partner wasn’t feeling well, the news was awful, and the weather was all over the place. Astrologically, even minimally superstitious me had noticed mercury in retrograde, a full moon, and two consecutive Fridays the thirteenth. Even my cards and runes were dramatically catastrophic.

As I was taking out the trash in the midst of all that, I was looking for foraging opportunities—little natural things to add to my altar. Some beauty to anchor in during the tumult.

I found little bunches that had been ripped from the neighborhood Juniperus virginiana (Eastern Red Cedar) and took one back to my altar as a sign of gratitude and hope, sharing what little means I had to connect with all the love that had come before, was here now, and would be here after.

I looked up the correspondences of juniper: Dana O’Driscoll of The Druids Garden notes its connection to purification. In The Complete Language of Herbs, S. Theresa Dietz notes its symbolic tie to constancy. Purification and constancy sounded pretty good to me.

And while I remain a secular-ish witch, that little nod from the Love I still believe holds up the universe lifted my spirits and grounded me. We are all connected, and we have each other—no matter what we face.

In 2023, I wrote Disabled Witchcraft. This little book came out in September 2024, and the antifascist underpinnings of these pages are unfortunately relevant here in 2026.

My publisher recently asked me to film a TikTok about why I wrote the book, and I wanted to share that with you, dear readers. Because we need to the magick of disabled people now more than ever.
